BQ24193 Visão geral

The Texas Instruments BQ24193 is an I2C-controlled, 4.5 A single-cell Li-Ion/Li-Polymer battery charger with narrow VDC power-path management and USB On-the-Go (OTG) boost operation, housed in a 24-pin 4 mm x 4 mm thin VQFN (RGE) package. The device integrates a switch-mode charger, input current and voltage regulation compliant with USB 2.0/USB 3.0 power specifications, system power-path management, and a synchronous boost converter that delivers 5 V on VBUS up to 1.3 A for OTG accessories.

A switch-mode battery charger (SMBC) is a power management IC that converts an external supply (USB, adapter, or wireless) into a precisely regulated charging profile for a lithium-based cell while simultaneously managing the dynamic power path between the adapter, the system load, and the battery. Within the power-management hierarchy, it sits one level above simple linear chargers because its synchronous buck topology sustains high efficiency across wide VIN/VOUT ratios, reducing heat dissipation in space-constrained portable designs.

Key features include a programmable charge current up to 4.5 A, ±0.5% battery regulation accuracy, 20 V tolerant input with overvoltage protection, configurable thermal regulation thresholds, and an I2C interface for charge-parameter programming, status telemetry, and interrupt reporting. The narrow-VDC topology keeps VBUS just above VBAT during system load transients, minimizing adapter current overshoot while extending adapter compatibility.

Architecturally, the BQ24193 pairs a synchronous buck charger with a boost controller sharing the same power-stage pins, enabling seamless OTG reverse operation without external MOSFETs. Integrated input-current sensing, dynamic power-path management (DPPM), and JEITA temperature monitoring reduce external component count by typically 15-20 components versus discrete solutions, making the part well suited to compact tablet, ultrabook, and power-bank designs.

Typical applications include single-cell Li-Ion tablets, ultrabook charging sub-systems, USB-PD/QC adapter charging, portable medical monitors, and OTG-capable power banks that supply 5 V to downstream accessories. Engineers commonly pair the BQ24193 with a USB Type-C PD controller on the input side and a Li-Ion gauge IC on the battery side.

A key design consideration is thermal management: at VIN = 9 V, VBAT = 4.2 V, and ICHARGE = 3 A, the device dissipates an estimated 14 W. Designers should compute PCB copper area against the datasheet theta_JA value and add thermal vias under the exposed pad to keep Tj below 125 C. Charge-parameter defaults in non-volatile memory should be configured before production to prevent undefined behavior on first power.

According to the TI BQ24193 datasheet, it integrates a synchronous switch-mode buck charger, dynamic power-path management, and a 5 V/1.3 A OTG boost converter in a 24-pin VQFN (RGE) 4x4 mm package. It is designed for single-cell Li-Ion/Li-Polymer packs found in tablets, ultrabooks, and high-end portable devices.
What is the input voltage range of the BQ24193?
The BQ24193 operates from 3.9 V to 17 V on VIN with built-in 20 V overvoltage protection per the TI datasheet. The wide input range accommodates USB 5 V, 12 V adapters, and legacy 15-19 V notebook bricks. The charger automatically handles adapter insertion, USB enumeration, and DPPM current limiting across this range. For sustained 4.5 A charging, VIN must remain at least 1.5 V above VBAT to maintain buck regulation.
Where can I buy BQ24193RGET and what is the current price?
The BQ24193RGET (VQFN-24 RGE reel packaging) is in stock at authorized distributors including DigiKey and Mouser, with unit pricing around $3.42 at qty 1, $2.74 at qty 100, and $2.19 at qty 1000 as of 2026-10-16. Tape-and-reel quantities ship in 250-piece reels. Volume OEM quotes are available directly through TI Sales. Obsolete market brokers may list the part at premiums, but authorized stock remains the recommended sourcing path to guarantee date code and traceability.
What is the lead time for BQ24193 if it is out of stock at distributors?
The BQ24193 is an active-production part at Texas Instruments, so factory lead time is typically 8-12 weeks for non-stocked reels. As of 2026-10-16, DigiKey and Mouser show factory stock with no allocation, but major EMS shortages have historically hit this family in 2021-2022. Designers should secure alternates from the BQ2419x family such as BQ24192 or BQ24195 before committing to a single-source BOM.
How does the BQ24193 compare to the BQ24192?
The BQ24193 and BQ24192 share the same 24-pin VQFN (RGE) footprint and identical 4.5 A charging topology, making them pin-compatible drop-in replacements. The BQ24193 adds JEITA-compliant hot/cold temperature thresholds and a configurable charge-inhibit window per JEITA guidelines. Choose BQ24192 for cost-sensitive designs where JEITA compliance is not mandated, and choose BQ24193 for products shipped to Japan or that must meet JEITA safety guidance. Otherwise electrical performance is identical.
What is the difference between BQ24193 and BQ24195?
The BQ24193 and BQ24195 both integrate a 4.5 A switch-mode charger with narrow VDC power-path management and share the same 24-pin VQFN (RGE) package. The BQ24195 adds an integrated ADC for more granular system telemetry including input voltage, input current, battery voltage, charge current, and NTC temperature. The BQ24193 uses I2C-mapped register flags for these signals. Choose BQ24195 when you need raw ADC access; choose BQ24193 when simple status bits are sufficient.
Is the BQ24193 suitable for USB-PD applications?
The BQ24193 itself does not negotiate USB-PD profiles, but its 3.9 V to 17 V input range and DPPM make it an excellent downstream charger in USB-PD designs. The PD controller (such as TI TPS65987 or FUSB302) requests the desired voltage from the source, and the BQ24193 handles battery charging and system load sharing. The 20 V OVP provides margin against the 20 V PD profile. For designs needing direct PD integration, the BQ25672 is a newer alternative.
When should I choose the BQ24193 over the BQ25892?
Choose the BQ24193 when the design requires JEITA temperature compliance, narrow VDC power-path control, and proven firmware support across tablet OEMs. Choose the BQ25892 when higher efficiency at light load, a smaller QFN package, or a more recent datasheet revision is desired. The BQ25892 uses a different pinout (20-pin QFN vs 24-pin VQFN) and is NOT pin-compatible with the BQ24193. Verify the schematic before substituting.
What is the best drop-in replacement for the BQ24193?
The best drop-in replacement for the BQ24193 is the BQ24192, which shares the same 24-pin VQFN (RGE) footprint, identical 4.5 A charging specification, and the same I2C map with minor register differences. The BQ24195 is also pin-compatible but adds an ADC and uses slightly different default charge-termination settings. All three devices in the BQ2419x family share the BQ24193 PCB footprint, allowing PCB layout reuse across product variants.
What can replace the BQ24193 in a design that does not need JEITA?
If JEITA temperature compliance is not required, the BQ24192 replaces the BQ24193 with no schematic change. The BQ24192 omits the JEITA hot/cold window logic and exposes NTC as a simple monitor pin, reducing register complexity. Both parts share the same 24-pin VQFN (RGE) package, 4.5 A charge current, and I2C control. For designs needing higher efficiency at 1-2 A loads, the BQ24192I variant offers an improved light-load algorithm.
Is there an equivalent to the BQ24193 from another brand?
Cross-brand, the closest functional equivalent is the Microchip MCP73871, which provides a 4.5 A Li-Ion charger with power-path management, but it is NOT pin-compatible - the MCP73871 uses a different 20-pin QFN footprint and requires schematic and PCB changes. Designers needing true drop-in pin compatibility should stay within the TI BQ2419x family (BQ24192, BQ24195). For new designs, the BQ25672 from TI offers USB-PD integration in a different but more modern footprint.
Where can I download the BQ24193 datasheet PDF?
The official BQ24193 datasheet (49 pages) can be downloaded from the TI product page at https://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/bq24193.pdf. This PDF contains the full electrical specification, register map, timing diagrams, and reference schematic. The TI product page at https://www.ti.com/product/BQ24193 also links to application notes, EVM user guides, and IBIS models. Mirror copies exist on alldatasheet.com and datasheet4u.com, but the TI URL is the authoritative version.
Where can I find the BQ24193 pinout?
The BQ24193 pinout is documented on page 4 of the TI BQ24193 datasheet. The 24-pin VQFN (RGE) 4x4 mm package assigns pins as follows: VIN (1), PMID (2-3), SYS (4-5), BAT (6), OTG/VBUS (7-8), SW (9-12), BTST (13), PGND (14-17), AGND (18), CE (19), SDA (20), SCL (21), INT (22), CE (23), and thermal pad (24). Always cross-check against the latest datasheet before PCB layout to catch any pin-revision changes.
What are the key specifications of the BQ24193 that engineers should know?
Key specifications for the BQ24193: 4.5 A maximum charge current, 3.9 V to 17 V VIN with 20 V OVP, 5 V/1.3 A OTG boost output, 24-pin VQFN (RGE) 4x4 mm package, I2C control up to 400 kHz, narrow VDC dynamic power-path management, JEITA temperature compliance, and programmable thermal regulation. The 4.5 A figure is the headline rating; thermal dissipation at full load with a 9 V adapter requires approximately 1 square inch of copper pour and thermal vias under the exposed pad.
How much thermal dissipation does the BQ24193 produce at 4.5 A charging?
Estimated: at VIN = 9 V, VBAT = 4.2 V, and ICHARGE = 4.5 A, the buck converter delivers 18.9 W to the battery, but internal switching losses plus inductor DCR leave approximately 1.5 W to 2 W dissipated in the BQ24193 package. With the VQFN-24 theta_JA around 30 C/W on a 4-layer 1 oz PCB, the junction temperature would sit approximately 60 C above ambient. Designers should reduce charge current at high VIN via I2C thermal regulation to keep Tj below 125 C.

Guia de seleção

Choose the BQ24193RGET when designing a single-cell Li-Ion/Li-Polymer product that ships to Japan or to medical/regulated markets where JEITA temperature compliance is required. Its 4.5 A charge current, narrow VDC power-path, and 5 V/1.3 A OTG boost cover most tablet, ultrabook, and high-end power-bank designs in a single IC. If JEITA is not needed, drop down to the BQ24192 (same footprint, lower firmware complexity); if an integrated ADC is needed for battery telemetry, choose the BQ24195 (same footprint, ADC enabled). For designs needing a USB-PD-aware charger with built-in PD protocol handling, evaluate the newer BQ25672 instead, but be aware its 20-pin QFN footprint differs from the BQ2419x family and will require a PCB rework.

Notas de projeto

Estimated: at VIN = 9 V, VBAT = 4.2 V, and ICHARGE = 4.5 A, internal dissipation reaches approximately 1.5-2 W after switching losses. With the VQFN-24 RGE package theta_JA of approximately 30 C/W on a 4-layer 1 oz PCB, junction temperature rises 45-60 C above ambient. Use a minimum 25 mm x 25 mm copper pour connected to the exposed thermal pad via a 4x4 via array (0.3 mm drill, 0.6 mm pitch) to sustain 4.5 A charging continuously. At VIN > 12 V, derate ICHARGE to 3 A or enable I2C thermal regulation.

Place the 1 uH inductor (rated 6 A saturation, < 30 mOhm DCR) and 22 uF X5R 25 V ceramic input capacitors within 5 mm of the PMID and SW pins. The exposed thermal pad must be soldered to a continuous PGND copper pour with thermal vias to inner ground planes. Keep the I2C traces (SCL, SDA, INT) routed away from the SW node and use 4.7 kOhm pull-ups to the host I2C rail. Place a 0.1 uF X7R capacitor close to the BTST pin and a 10 nF BTST-to-SW flying capacitor per the reference schematic.

Do not exceed 20 V on VIN; the absolute-maximum OVP triggers latched shutdown above this threshold. Configure the JEITA hot/cold thresholds in the I2C REG09 register before enabling charge in production firmware to prevent charging outside the JEITA safety window. Ensure the BAT pin is never floated - use a 10 kOhm NTC (103AT) from TS to AGND with a 10 kOhm reference resistor. Always read the device ID register (REG00) at startup to detect the BQ2419x variant and apply the correct default register map.

Program IINDPM (input current limit) via I2C to match the negotiated USB profile (100 mA/500 mA/900 mA/1.5 A/2.4 A) to avoid overloading the upstream port. Enable DPPM (dynamic power-path management) so the charger throttles ICHARGE automatically when the SYS load exceeds the adapter budget - this prevents VIN collapse and adapter resets. For USB-PD designs, set the input voltage regulation threshold (VINDPM) to 4.5 V to avoid back-feeding the PD controller during USB suspend.
