DSPIC33FJ16GS402-I/SO Visão geral

The Microchip DSPIC33FJ16GS402-I/SO is a 16-bit Digital Signal Controller (DSC) that integrates a high-performance DSP engine with a 16-bit MCU architecture, delivering 40 MIPS at up to 50 MHz from a 3.0 V to 3.6 V supply. It is offered in a 28-pin SOIC package with 16 KB of flash program memory, 2 KB of RAM, and high-speed peripherals purpose-built for digital switch-mode power supply (SMPS) and digital power-conversion applications.

A Digital Signal Controller is a hybrid device that combines a microcontroller's deterministic control peripherals with a digital signal processor's mathematical throughput. The dsPIC33F family sits at the hierarchy: DSC -> DSP-enhanced MCU -> microcontroller -> embedded processor. By merging both roles into a single core, designers can sample high-frequency signals, run control loops, and drive power-stage MOSFETs from a single chip, reducing BOM cost and PCB area.

Key features include dedicated high-speed PWM modules with duty-cycle resolution suitable for digital power topologies, on-chip high-speed 10-bit ADCs, dual analog comparators with PWM-level outputs for cycle-by-cycle current limiting, and a 4-channel DMA engine that offloads data movement from the CPU. The device also provides a configurable 8 MHz internal oscillator, JTAG/ICD debugging, and multiple communication peripherals (UART, SPI, I2C) for housekeeping and telemetry.

The 16-bit modified Harvard architecture separates program and data buses and supports single-cycle MAC operations, enabling tightly tuned digital compensator loops. Combined with 16 KB of self-programmable flash and 2 KB of RAM, the controller can host state machines, look-up tables for soft-start and protection curves, and run real-time PID or average-current-mode control without external logic.

Typical applications include AC-to-DC converters, isolated and non-isolated DC-to-DC converters, power factor correction (PFC) stages, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), photovoltaic micro-inverters, and digital lighting ballasts. On-board peripherals such as the high-speed PWM and comparator make it drop-in suitable for multi-loop peak-current-mode control.

Designers should evaluate the 28-pin SOIC variant versus the 28-pin QFN (MM) and 28-pin SPDIP (SP) options based on thermal dissipation and assembly process. For designs requiring more PWM channels or additional ADC channels, the larger-pin-count siblings (dsPIC33FJ16GS404, GS502, GS504) maintain software compatibility while offering expanded peripherals.

This page synthesizes distributor stock, drop-in package equivalents, and practical SMPS design notes that are not consolidated in the manufacturer datasheet, giving engineers a faster path to part selection and PCB layout decisions.

⚡

AC-to-DC Power Converter Control

The DSPIC33FJ16GS402-I/SO fits AC-to-DC converter control because its 40 MIPS dsPIC33F core executes single-cycle MAC operations needed for average-current-mode control loops above 100 kHz. With its 3.0 V to 3.6 V supply and on-chip 10-bit high-speed ADC, the device samples rectified mains voltage and inductor current while generating phase-controlled PWM for the boost PFC stage. The 16 KB flash hosts state machines for soft-start, brown-out, and valley skipping to optimize light-load efficiency.

🏭

Isolated DC-to-DC Converter (Quarter-Brick)

For isolated DC-DC converters in intermediate bus architectures, the DSPIC33FJ16GS402-I/SO provides the high-speed PWM resolution required for primary-side peak-current-mode control and secondary-side synchronous rectifier timing. Its dual analog comparators deliver cycle-by-cycle current limiting at switching frequencies up to 1 MHz, while the 4-channel DMA offloads housekeeping telemetry from the CPU. This allows the controller to maintain tight output regulation across the quarter-brick's wide load range.

⚡

Power Factor Correction (PFC) Stage

The DSPIC33FJ16GS402-I/SO suits PFC stages thanks to its dedicated high-speed PWM and fast analog comparators capable of cycle-by-cycle current shaping. The 16-bit modified Harvard architecture runs the boost PFC control loop in well under 1 us, allowing switching frequencies above 100 kHz for reduced magnetics. With 16 KB of flash and 2 KB of RAM, the controller stores the PI compensator coefficients, soft-start ramp, and THD optimization look-up tables needed for >0.99 power factor.

🖥️

Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) Control

For line-interactive and double-conversion UPS topologies, the DSPIC33FJ16GS402-I/SO coordinates battery charging, AC-mains synchronization, and inverter PWM generation from a 3.3 V rail. Its DSP engine executes RMS voltage calculations and zero-crossing detection while the high-speed PWM drives the inverter at low-distortion sine output. The 16 KB flash accommodates state-machine firmware for grid-tie/battery mode transitions and fault diagnostics required for offline UPS safety standards.

💡

Photovoltaic Micro-Inverter

The DSPIC33FJ16GS402-I/SO is a strong fit for photovoltaic micro-inverters because its high-speed PWM channels and analog comparators implement Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) at panel-level switching rates. The device's 10-bit ADC continuously samples PV voltage and current while the DSP engine computes incremental-conductance MPPT in real time. Operating from 3.0 V to 3.6 V, the controller integrates easily with gate drivers in compact micro-inverter designs.

💡

Digital Lighting Ballast

For digital fluorescent and LED ballasts, the DSPIC33FJ16GS402-I/SO generates high-frequency PWM that drives resonant LC tanks for HID or LED current regulation. The 16-bit DSP engine computes RMS lamp current and runs warm-up curves to extend lamp life, while the on-chip analog comparators detect lamp-strike and end-of-life faults. With 2 KB of RAM it stores dimming schedules and supports DALI or 0-10 V analog dimming interfaces for commercial lighting control.

Notas de projeto

The DSPIC33FJ16GS402-I/SO operates from 3.0 V to 3.6 V and requires a 10 uF + 0.1 uF decoupling pair on VDD placed within 5 mm of the VDD pin. The VCAP pin (pin 14) must have a low-ESR 4.7 uF to 10 uF ceramic capacitor tied to ground to stabilize the internal 1.8 V core regulator. Estimated: at 40 MIPS and 3.3 V, VDD current draw is around 30 mA - size the upstream 3.3 V LDO accordingly.

The 28-pin SOIC package has a typical theta_JA of approximately 70 C/W. At 30 mA active current and 3.3 V, internal dissipation is only 100 mW - well within thermal limits. For designs pushing higher PWM duty cycles or operating at 50 MHz (GS402-50I variant), keep the SOIC copper pour to at least 100 mm^2 on the VDD/GND plane to limit junction temperature rise. Estimated dissipation assumes typical dsPIC33F activity.

Route the high-speed PWM traces (PWM1H/L through PWM4H/L) with controlled impedance and keep them short - these signals drive power-stage MOSFETs at up to 1 MHz edge rates and are susceptible to ringing. Place the analog ADC traces (AN0-AN3) away from PWM traces by at least 3x trace spacing to minimize coupled noise into current-sense measurements. The MCLR pin needs a 10 kohm pull-up and a 100 nF cap to ground for clean in-circuit debugging.

Do not confuse the DSPIC33FJ16GS402 (28-pin, 16 KB flash) with the smaller-pin DSPIC33FJ06GS101/102 or larger-pin DSPIC33FJ16GS404/502/504 families - register maps and PWM channel counts differ. When migrating firmware from a 44-pin GS404 to the 28-pin GS402, remove or comment out references to PWM5/PWM6 and to ADC channels AN6+ to avoid silent compile-time peripheral conflicts.
