LTC4418CUF#PBF Visão geral
An ORing controller, also known as a PowerPath controller or ideal-diode controller, is a power management IC that uses external P-channel MOSFETs to emulate a low-loss diode between two supplies. It allows redundant or prioritized power sources to share a load without the typical diode forward drop, falling within the broader category of power management ICs and system-level supervisors. The LTC4418 implements two fully independent channels with priority set by pin assignment, giving designers a compact alternative to discrete Schottky ORing solutions.
Key features include fast non-overlap switchover that prevents reverse and cross conduction while minimizing output droop, a 6 V gate clamp that protects downstream MOSFETs, and a controlled soft-start that limits inrush current on connection. Open-drain VALID outputs indicate each input has remained within its OV/UV window for the configured validation period, simplifying digital handshake with downstream microcontrollers and PMUs. The combination of wide VIN, low Iq, and small QFN-20 footprint makes the LTC4418 ideal for space-constrained redundant systems.
Architecturally, the device combines precision voltage references, comparators, and charge-pump-driven gate drivers for both channels on a single die, achieving parametric parity with larger two-chip solutions. Designers can adjust OV/UV thresholds with simple resistor dividers and program validation time with a single capacitor, retaining design flexibility without external firmware.
Typical applications include battery-backed wireless sensor nodes, industrial sensor and PLC backup power systems, asset trackers, and e-call/telematics units that must hand over cleanly from primary supply to backup battery without MCU involvement. The 40 V tolerance also suits 24 V industrial bus systems and solar-charge ORing topologies.
When designing, place gate resistors close to the IC and keep source-sense traces short to avoid oscillations; verify the external P-FET body-diode avalanche rating EAS for any unclamped inductive disconnect event. Aplicações típicas
LTC4418CUF#PBF é adequado para 6 aplicaçãos: Battery-Backed Wireless Sensor Node, Industrial 24V Bus Redundant Power, Asset Tracker / Telematics Backup Power, Solar Charge ORing and Battery Backup, PLC / Industrial Sensor Redundant Rail, Server / Networking Redundant PSU.
Battery-Backed Wireless Sensor Node
The LTC4418CUF#PBF is well suited to battery-backed wireless sensor nodes because its 26 µA quiescent current and 2.5 V–40 V input range allow the primary rail (often 3.6 V LiSOCl2 or 4.2 V Li-ion) and a backup supercapacitor/coin cell to share the load without disturbing the radio. Validated OV/UV windows of ±1.5 % prevent false switchover during radio TX current spikes that sag the primary rail, and the open-drain VALID outputs give the host MCU a clean signal to enter low-power mode. Place the IC upstream of the LDO that powers the SoC, with two P-FETs sized for the peak TX current (typically 2–5 A for sub-GHz radios), and rely on the 6 V gate clamp to protect the FETs from inductive transients on long antenna traces.

Industrial 24V Bus Redundant Power
In industrial 24 V bus systems the LTC4418CUF#PBF provides prioritized ORing between a primary 24 V supply and a secondary backup rail, automatically switching over without an MCU. The 40 V absolute-maximum rating tolerates 24 V ±20 % transients and IEC 61000-4-2 surge events, while the fast non-overlap switchover prevents reverse-current flow during hand-off that could otherwise damage the upstream PLC supply. Designers typically pair the controller with two P-FETs in DFN1006 or SO-8 packages sized for 3–5 A continuous load, plus a TVS diode for surge clamping. The 20-pin QFN package keeps the ORing section under 25 mm² - critical in DIN-rail PLC backplanes where every mm² of PCB is billable area.

Asset Tracker / Telematics Backup Power
Asset trackers and telematics control units need to remain operational for at least 30 minutes after the vehicle battery is disconnected so that the e-call or last-known-position report can be transmitted. The LTC4418CUF#PBF handles prioritized switchover from VBAT (12 V / 24 V automotive) to a supercapacitor or Li-ion backup, with validated OV/UV windows detecting deep-discharge and preventing reverse charging of the backup source. Its 26 µA quiescent current plus supercapacitor self-discharge fits within typical 5-year tracking standby budgets. The QFN-20 footprint fits inside IP65-rated enclosures where board area is constrained and the exposed pad provides adequate thermal performance for continuous 1 A loads.

Solar Charge ORing and Battery Backup
The LTC4418CUF#PBF is an effective solution for ORing a photovoltaic input with a battery backup in remote solar-powered IoT nodes and roadside monitoring stations. Channel 1 can be assigned to the higher-priority PV source, channel 2 to the battery, and the controller automatically transfers the load to battery when PV drops below the UV threshold. Its 6 V gate clamp and controlled soft-start minimize inrush on the PV input, protecting the panel and downstream MPPT converter. With operating voltage up to 40 V, the same IC handles 12 V and 24 V nominal solar panels without reconfiguration.

PLC / Industrial Sensor Redundant Rail
Programmable logic controllers and industrial 4-20 mA sensor transmitters often require redundant 24 V rails with deterministic switchover behavior for SIL-2 / SIL-3 functional-safety architectures. The LTC4418CUF#PBF provides two independent prioritized channels with ±1.5 % OV/UV accuracy, allowing the safety MCU to detect which rail is currently supplying the load via the open-drain VALID outputs. The fast non-overlap switching (typically < 1 µs) prevents both reverse current and cross conduction during switchover - critical for safety functions where a transient overvoltage on the secondary rail could otherwise back-feed into the primary supply. Its wide 2.5 V–40 V input also supports 5 V, 12 V and 36 V sensor bus topologies.

Server / Networking Redundant PSU
In 1U server and network-switch redundant-power topologies the LTC4418CUF#PBF can ORing two 12 V feeds at the card edge before a downstream buck regulator, providing automatic switchover in the event of one PSU failing. Its small 20-QFN (4x4 mm) footprint fits within the card-edge area of PICe / ATCA modules and its 40 V tolerance absorbs the 12 V rail during hot-swap events. The 6 V gate clamp and OV/UV window protect downstream point-of-load converters from over-voltage transients during switchover. Designers typically pair the controller with two 30 V P-FETs sized for 8-15 A continuous load and a hot-swap controller for inrush limiting.

Notas de projeto
Always verify the avalanche energy (EAS) rating of the external P-channel MOSFETs. When the LTC4418 disconnects the higher-priority supply the load current is forced through the lower channel's MOSFET body diode, and any unclamped inductance in that path can drive the body diode into avalanche. The Analog Devices LTC4418 datasheet explicitly warns that external P-FET EAS may be exceeded in inductive applications - either select a FET with adequate EAS or add a TVS clamp across the source-drain path.
Place the LTC4418 and its external P-FETs as close together as possible to minimize parasitic inductance in the gate-drive loop. Keep V1SENSE / V2SENSE traces short and direct to the corresponding P-FET source pin - long source-sense traces create a feedback loop that can cause gate-drive oscillation during switchover. Connect the QFN exposed pad to a contiguous copper pour with at least 6 thermal vias to the inner ground plane for adequate heat spreading under continuous 1 A loads.
Estimated: the LTC4418 itself dissipates only 26 µA Iq plus gate-drive losses into the MOSFET gates - well under 50 mW. System-level thermal design should therefore focus on the external P-FETs, where RDS(on) × I² losses dominate. For a 3 A continuous load through a 30 mΩ P-FET, plan for 270 mW dissipation per channel and verify the FET package's thermal resistance (θJA) against your maximum ambient.
Add a 100 kΩ pull-up resistor to each open-drain VALID output. Wire VALID1/VALID2 to interrupt-capable GPIOs on the host MCU so that firmware can react to OV/UV events within microseconds. Note the LTC4418 VALID outputs are open-drain - they require pull-ups; driving them directly to a logic supply without a pull-up will leave them floating and produce unreliable status readings.
