PIC16C716-20/SO Visão geral

The Microchip Technology PIC16C716-20/SO is a high-performance 8-bit CMOS OTP-based microcontroller built on Microchip's mid-range PIC16 architecture, delivering 20 MHz (200 ns instruction cycle) CPU performance with 3.5 KB (2K x 14) of program memory in an 18-pin SOIC (SO) wide-body package. It combines 128 bytes of RAM, 13 digital I/O pins, a 10-bit-resolution 8-channel Analog-to-Digital Converter, two 8-bit timers plus one 16-bit timer, a Capture/Compare/PWM (CCP) module, and a 20 MHz internal oscillator option. The 'C' suffix denotes the One-Time-Programmable (OTP) EPROM program memory variant, and the '20' suffix denotes the 20 MHz maximum clock speed.

An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU, RAM, ROM/Flash, I/O, and peripherals onto one die. The PIC16C716 belongs to the PIC16C family, a sub-family of Microchip's classic mid-range microcontrollers that bridges simple baseline PIC12/PIC16C5X devices and enhanced mid-range PIC16F devices. Within the broader taxonomy, this places the part as: microcontroller -> embedded controller -> 8-bit MCU -> CMOS RISC MCU -> PIC16C family -> mid-range core. The mid-range core uses a 14-bit instruction word, supports only 35 single-word instructions, and provides deterministic interrupt latency for real-time control applications.

Key differentiating features include the integrated 10-bit ADC (a step up from 8-bit ADC PIC16C7X predecessors), an on-chip CCP module for PWM motor and lighting control, an internal oscillator that can eliminate an external crystal in cost-sensitive designs, and an operating voltage range of 2.5 V to 5.5 V (commercial grade, -40 C to +85 C). With 35 single-word instructions and single-cycle execution on most instructions (program branches take two cycles), the device simplifies firmware development while preserving real-time determinism.

Architecturally, the PIC16C716 employs a Harvard RISC core with separate program and data buses, a 14-bit program memory width, and a multi-source interrupt controller. The internal oscillator can be calibrated in software, and the ADC sampling rate is governed by the system clock, enabling accurate conversions at sustained throughput. Power management is supported via SLEEP mode with multiple wake-up sources.

Typical applications include automotive sensor signal conditioning, industrial process control loops, white-goods and consumer appliance control boards, battery chargers with PWM regulation, and small motor control. The CCP module makes it especially suitable for brushed DC motor speed control and LED dimming applications. The wide SOIC-18 footprint also aids hand-prototyping and rework.

Design tip: when migrating firmware from PIC16C712 to PIC16C716, the ADC and CCP peripherals are enhanced - validate ADC acquisition time and PWM dead-time registers in the new code base. Aplicações típicas

PIC16C716-20/SO é adequado para 7 aplicaçãos: Automotive Sensor Signal Conditioning, Industrial Process Control Loops, White Goods and Appliance Control Boards, Battery Chargers with PWM Regulation, Brushed DC Motor Speed Control, LED Lighting Dimming Controllers, Consumer Remote-Control Transmitters.

🚗

Automotive Sensor Signal Conditioning

The PIC16C716-20/SO fits automotive sensor conditioning because its 10-bit ADC with 8 input channels can simultaneously sample multiple analog sensors (temperature, pressure, position) while the 20 MHz CPU performs linearization and filtering in real time. The internal 4/8 MHz oscillator eliminates external crystals, reducing BOM cost for under-dash body-electronics modules. Use the I-grade PIC16C716-20I/SO variant for -40 C to +85 C environments; for under-hood -40 C to +125 C applications, qualify the AEC-Q100 PIC16F1769 family instead. Companion parts include the MCP6001 op-amp for sensor front-ends and the MCP2515 CAN transceiver for network output.

🏭

Industrial Process Control Loops

The PIC16C716-20/SO is well matched to PID control loops in industrial automation thanks to its 20 MHz CPU (50 ns single-cycle throughput) which sustains 10 kHz control rates, plus its 10-bit ADC and CCP module that generate the PWM drive signal for actuator outputs. The 13 GPIO pins comfortably drive 4-20 mA current loops, opto-isolated relay drivers, and a 4-digit 7-segment display without external bus expanders. Use the I-grade variant for factory-floor temperature swings; pair with the MCP4725 DAC for analog setpoint output and the MCP2551 CAN transceiver for plant-wide networking.

🔧

White Goods and Appliance Control Boards

The PIC16C716-20/SO is a long-standing workhorse in washing-machine, dishwasher, and microwave control boards because its 13 GPIO and CCP module drive triac-based motor and heater controls while the internal oscillator drops the BOM cost below a two-layer crystal design. The 3.5 KB OTP memory holds typical appliance firmware with comfortable headroom, and the 18-pin SOIC wide-body package simplifies hand-rework during service. Use the CCP PWM to regulate brush-DC drain pumps or universal motors; pair with the MOC3021 opto-triac driver for mains-isolated switching and the MCP9700 analog temperature sensor for thermal feedback.

⚡

Battery Chargers with PWM Regulation

The PIC16C716-20/SO is ideal for closed-loop battery chargers because the CCP module generates the PWM that drives a buck converter switching at 50-200 kHz, while the 10-bit ADC monitors charge current and battery voltage with sufficient resolution for CC/CV control algorithms. The 20 MHz CPU executes the charge-state machine in real time without timing jitter. The OTP memory is appropriate for sealed firmware, and the wide SOIC-18 footprint aids hand-debugging during charger qualification. For Li-ion chemistries requiring higher accuracy, pair the part with the MCP6L01 op-amp for current-sense amplification and the MCP1700 LDO for analog rail regulation.

🏭

Brushed DC Motor Speed Control

The PIC16C716-20/SO drives brushed DC motors directly through its CCP module, which produces the PWM duty cycle that controls a low-side MOSFET or H-bridge driver such as the MCP1755. The 20 MHz CPU updates the PWM duty at up to 10 kHz while simultaneously reading back-tach or back-EMF on the 10-bit ADC for closed-loop speed regulation. The 13 GPIO pins are sufficient for direction, brake, enable, fault, and tach-input signals without bus expansion. Choose the I-grade variant for industrial motor enclosures; pair with the MCP1755 0.5 A LDO for logic supply and the TC4420 MOSFET driver for high-current switching.

💡

LED Lighting Dimming Controllers

The PIC16C716-20/SO is well suited to dimming controllers for architectural and task LED lighting because the CCP module produces a high-resolution PWM output (up to 10-bit at modest PWM frequencies) that drives MOSFET drivers like the TC4420 directly, while the 10-bit ADC reads ambient-light sensors and potentiometer setpoints. The internal oscillator removes the BOM cost of an external crystal in cost-sensitive fixtures. The OTP memory locks in calibration tables and dim curves to prevent field tampering. For RGBW fixtures, additional PWM channels can be bit-banged on spare GPIO. Pair with the MCP9700 temperature sensor for thermal fold-back protection.

📱

Consumer Remote-Control Transmitters

The PIC16C716-20/SO powers low-cost RF or IR remote-control transmitters because its 3.5 KB OTP memory comfortably holds keypad scanning, rolling-code, and battery-management firmware, while the internal oscillator drops the BOM to a single IC plus an RF transmitter IC. The 13 GPIO scan up to a 4x4 matrix keypad with no external logic. SLEEP mode at microamp-level currents extends battery life to multi-year timeframes. Use the CCP module to generate sub-carrier modulation for IR or simple OOK signaling. Pair with the MICRF112 transmitter IC and a CR2032 coin cell for a complete sub-$1 BOM.

What is the program memory size of PIC16C716-20/SO?
The PIC16C716-20/SO contains 3.5 KB of OTP EPROM program memory, organized as 2K x 14 words. According to the Microchip PIC16C712/716 datasheet (30244D), 2K instruction words of 14-bit width give the device 35 single-word instructions with most executing in a single 200 ns cycle at 20 MHz. OTP (One-Time-Programmable) EPROM means the device is programmed once and cannot be reprogrammed, which is typical for low-cost volume production runs.
Does PIC16C716-20/SO have an internal oscillator?
Yes, the PIC16C716-20/SO includes an internal oscillator that can be software-configured to approximately 4 MHz (LF mode) or 8 MHz (HF mode), eliminating the need for an external crystal in many designs. The internal oscillator is factory calibrated, and for timing-critical applications an external crystal or resonator can be connected to the OSC1/OSC2 pins. This dual-oscillator architecture is one reason the part remains popular for cost-sensitive commercial designs.
What is the difference between PIC16C716 and PIC16C712?
The PIC16C716 differs from the PIC16C712 only in its ADC implementation: the PIC16C716 has a 10-bit ADC and the PIC16C712 has an 8-bit ADC. Both share the same 18-pin footprint, 3.5 KB OTP memory, 128-byte RAM, 13 I/O pins, CCP module, and pinout, making the two parts drop-in compatible at the PCB level when firmware is adjusted for ADC resolution. This makes the PIC16C712 a viable cost-down option when 8-bit ADC resolution is sufficient.
Where to buy PIC16C716-20/SO online?
The PIC16C716-20/SO can be sourced from major distributors including Digi-Key, Mouser, and Octopart-listed resellers. As of 2026-09-18, Digi-Key, Mouser and Hotenda list the part with competitive bulk pricing. Because the PIC16C716 family is approaching NRND (Not Recommended for New Designs), lead times can stretch 12-20 weeks for production volumes, so stocking buffer inventory or qualifying a flash-based alternative like the PIC16F716-I/SO is recommended for new designs.

As of 2026-09-18, lead time for PIC16C716-20/SO is typically 8-12 weeks at authorized distributors, occasionally stretching to 16-20 weeks because the PIC16C716 family is flagged NRND. Distributors like Hotenda, Veswin, and ETEI maintain spot inventory but with a premium. For long-term supply assurance, designers should qualify the Flash-based PIC16F716-I/SO drop-in replacement or move to the current-production PIC16F1769 family.
PIC16C716-20/SO vs PIC16F716-I/SO - which is better for new designs?
The PIC16F716-I/SO is better for new designs because it uses Flash program memory (reprogrammable in-circuit), supports ICD debugging, and is in full active production. The PIC16C716-20/SO uses OTP EPROM (one-time programmable) and is flagged NRND. Both share the 18-pin SOIC footprint, 3.5 KB program memory, 128-byte RAM, 13 I/O, 10-bit ADC, and CCP module, so the PIC16F716-I/SO is a true drop-in replacement with the benefit of in-circuit reprogrammability for development.
When should I choose PIC16C716-20/SO over PIC16F716-I/SO?
Choose the PIC16C716-20/SO over the PIC16F716-I/SO when the production environment specifically requires OTP (one-time-programmable) memory for security (firmware cannot be read back or modified after programming), when legacy firmware is already qualified, or when cost-per-unit is the single highest priority and the lower-volume NRND supply chain is acceptable. For all new designs, the Flash-based PIC16F716-I/SO is recommended.
What is the best drop-in replacement for PIC16C716-20/SO?
The best drop-in replacement for PIC16C716-20/SO is the PIC16F716-I/SO. Both share the 18-pin SOIC (SO) wide-body package footprint, the same PIC16 mid-range core, 3.5 KB program memory, 128-byte RAM, 13 I/O pins, 10-bit ADC, identical CCP module, and the same peripheral register map (with Flash reprogramming replacing OTP programming). For users already on Microchip's PIC16C712-20/SO, the PIC16C712-20I/SO is also a viable alternate footprint mate.

Notas de projeto

Estimated: at VDD=5 V, CPU=20 MHz active, and ADC enabled, the PIC16C716-20/SO typically draws 2-3 mA active current and falls to <1 uA in SLEEP mode. Place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor as close as possible to the VDD pin (pin 17) and add a 10 uF bulk capacitor on the same rail. For battery-powered designs, gate the ADC and disable unused peripherals before entering SLEEP to maximize battery life.

The 18-pin SOIC wide-body package has a junction-to-ambient thermal resistance (theta_JA) of approximately 80 C/W for a 2-layer PCB without a thermal pad. Estimated: at 25 C ambient and 5 mW dissipation (typical for an MCU at 20 MHz active), the junction temperature rises only 0.4 C above ambient, well within the commercial 0 C to +70 C operating range. For industrial-grade -40 C to +85 C applications, derating is not a concern at these power levels.

Route the oscillator traces (RA6/OSC2 and RA7/OSC1) as short and symmetric as possible, guard them with a ground pour, and keep them away from switching signals such as the CCP PWM output. Place the 100 nF VDD decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of pin 17, and route the MCLR/VPP line directly to a programming header with a 10 kohm pull-up to VDD. The 18-pin SOIC wide-body (7.50 mm) footprint is hand-solderable but reflow is preferred for volume production.

Do not confuse PIC16C716 (10-bit ADC) with PIC16C712 (8-bit ADC); the firmware ADC configuration register ADCON1 must be re-validated when porting code between them. The OTP EPROM memory cannot be reprogrammed or in-circuit debugged - plan for OTP blank units and external programming tools. The '20' speed grade supports 20 MHz operation but only at VDD >= 4.5 V; below that, the internal oscillator divides down automatically.
