PIC16F876-10E/SP Visão geral

The Microchip Technology PIC16F876-10E/SP is an 8-bit CMOS FLASH-based PIC microcontroller executing instructions in 200 ns, packaged in a 28-pin SPDIP (Skinny Plastic DIP) through-hole format. It features 14 KB of program memory, 368 bytes of RAM, 256 bytes of EEPROM, 22 digital I/O pins, and operates at 10 MHz across a 2.0V to 5.5V supply range. The 'E' suffix designates the enhanced industrial temperature grade (-40°C to +125°C), while '10' indicates the 10 MHz speed grade and 'SP' denotes the 28-SPDIP package.

An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer containing a CPU, program memory, RAM, EEPROM, peripheral set, and I/O pins on one die. The PIC16F family specifically uses Microchip's Harvard RISC architecture with 35 single-word instructions, providing deterministic 200 ns instruction execution at 10 MHz. MCUs sit within the broader embedded system hierarchy: microcontroller -> embedded processor -> semiconductor -> integrated circuit, serving as the programmable logic element in countless commercial and industrial products.

Key differentiating features include 5 channels of 10-bit analog-to-digital conversion, a USART for serial communication, MSSP for SPI and I²C, two 8-bit timers plus one 16-bit timer, a 14-bit instruction word, and a 14-bit program counter addressing up to 8K x 14 words. In-system programming (ICSP) via two pins enables field firmware updates without removing the MCU from the board.

Architecturally, the PIC16F876 uses CMOS FLASH technology supporting 100,000 erase/write cycles typical, with self-reprogrammable capability under software control. The Harvard bus separates program and data memory paths, eliminating fetch-execute bottlenecks common to von Neumann architectures. The enhanced core includes an 8-level deep hardware stack, indirect addressing modes, and a hardware multiplier is not present on this baseline family member.

Typical applications include industrial sensor interfaces, appliance control panels, automotive body electronics (under hood temperature requires the 'I' grade), low-power remote controls, and legacy product replacements where pin-compatible migration is essential. The SPDIP package is preferred for hobbyist prototyping, breadboarding, and through-hole manufacturing lines that cannot accommodate surface-mount assembly.

When designing, observe the 22 I/O maximum and the shared analog/digital functions on PORTA and PORTE to avoid conflicts. The 'E' industrial grade is appropriate for most commercial enclosures; upgrade to the 'I' (-40°C to +125°C operational, -40°C to +150°C storage) only when full automotive thermal stress is required.

Remote Controls & Low-Power Wireless Sensor Nodes

The PIC16F876-10E/SP forms the MCU half of remote control transmitters and low-power wireless sensor nodes, where its 2.0-5.5 V operating range supports both 3 V coin-cell and 5 V USB-powered variants. With the ICSP bootloader retained, firmware can be updated via the same radio link (over-the-air update) when paired with a sub-GHz transceiver such as the MRF89XA. Sleep current at 2 V is below 1 µA in the SLEEP mode (per datasheet DS30292D), enabling multi-year battery life on duty-cycled sensor endpoints. The 22 I/O pins accommodate multi-button keypads, joystick inputs, and status LEDs while leaving USART/MSSP free for radio control. Enhanced temperature grade supports outdoor remote housings.

🏭

Legacy Industrial Equipment Replacement & Field Service

The PIC16F876-10E/SP serves as a form-fit-function replacement in field service of installed industrial equipment where a 28-SPDIP footprint is mandatory for socket or PCB compatibility with the original design. The PIC16F876 has been in production since the late 1990s with multi-decade longevity commitments from Microchip, ensuring long-term spare-part availability for capital equipment (CNC machines, test rigs, packaging lines) with 10-20 year service lives. ICSP allows firmware refresh without desoldering, and the 14 KB FLASH can absorb bug-fix releases via the same programming header used during manufacture. Through-hole SPDIP also survives harsher mechanical/vibration environments than fine-pitch SMD alternatives.

Notas de projeto

Decouple VDD (pin 20) with a 100 nF ceramic capacitor placed within 5 mm of the pin, and add a 10 µF bulk tantalum or electrolytic on the same rail. PIC16F876 has two VSS pins (8 and 19); both must be connected to a low-impedance ground plane to avoid ground-bounce during ADC conversion. Brown-Out Reset (BOR) is enabled in configuration bits to provide clean power-on behavior; disable only if you have an external supervisor like MCP130T.

The PIC16F876 ADC is most accurate when the source impedance is below 2.5 kΩ; thermistors and potentiometers should be buffered with a low-impedance op-amp follower (e.g., MCP6001) if higher source impedance is unavoidable. Aquisition time is set in software via the ACQT bits and must accommodate the source impedance or readings will be low. The RA4 pin is open-drain and requires a pull-up if used as a digital output.

Route the crystal traces (OSC1, OSC2) on the top layer surrounded by a ground guard ring, keeping trace length under 10 mm and capacitance under 5 pF each. Place the crystal within 10 mm of pins 9-10. Keep ADC analog traces (RA0-RA5) away from the USART lines (RC6/RC7) and PWM outputs (RC1/RC2) to prevent digital switching noise from coupling into the analog input measurement.

PIC16F876 power dissipation in 28-SPDIP at 10 MHz and 5 V is around 50 mW worst-case (10 mA × 5 V); junction temperature rise above ambient is approximately 6 °C with theta_JA near 60 °C/W, so no thermal derating is required for normal indoor environments. Verify with a thermal probe if the device is sealed inside an enclosure with limited airflow or mounted near heat sources.
