PIC16F883T-I/ML Visão geral

The Microchip Technology PIC16F883T-I/ML is an 8-bit CMOS flash-based mid-range PIC microcontroller running up to 20 MHz instruction execution, packaged in a 28-pin QFN (6x6 mm) with exposed thermal pad. It integrates 7 KB (4K x 14) of flash program memory, 256 bytes of EEPROM data memory, and 368 bytes of SRAM, providing ample headroom for embedded control loops and small protocol stacks.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU core, program and data memory, and programmable I/O peripherals. The PIC16F883 belongs to the mid-range PIC16 family that uses a RISC Harvard architecture with only 35 single-word instructions, simplifying firmware development and code portability across the family. Within the broader hierarchy, this part sits under: PIC16F family -> PIC16 mid-range -> 8-bit MCU -> microcontroller -> embedded IC -> semiconductor.

Key differentiating features include nanoWatt power management for sleep currents down to a few nanoamperes, a 10-bit ADC with up to 11 channels, enhanced CCP/ECCP modules, multiple serial peripherals (AUSART, MSSP for SPI/I2C), and 25 general-purpose I/O pins. The wide 2.0V to 5.5V operating range enables both 3.3V and 5V designs without level translation.

Technically, the device uses a 14-bit instruction word with a 200 ns minimum instruction cycle at 20 MHz. Internal oscillator options (up to 8 MHz) reduce external component count. The 28-QFN package offers a compact 6x6 mm footprint with an exposed pad that lowers thermal resistance for high-I/O, switching-intensive applications.

Typical applications include industrial sensor interfaces, consumer appliance controls, battery-powered metering, low-cost LED drivers, automotive body electronics (non-safety), and USB-to-UART bridges using the integrated AUSART. The combination of EEPROM, ADC, and PWM peripherals targets motor control and smart sensor nodes.

When designing with this part, reserve one I/O pin for In-Circuit Serial Programming (ICSP) to enable field firmware updates. Place decoupling capacitors (100 nF plus 1 uF bulk) within 5 mm of the VDD pins and bond the exposed pad to a continuous ground plane for thermal dissipation.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in package alternatives, and practical design considerations that go beyond what the manufacturer datasheet alone offers.

Notas de projeto

Place a 100 nF ceramic decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of each VDD pin (pin 10 on this 28-QFN) and a 1 uF to 10 uF bulk tantalum or ceramic capacitor on the same power rail. The QFN package has only one VDD pin, so adequate bulk capacitance at the package entry is critical for transient response during high-current PWM switching. For battery-powered designs, route the PIC16F883T-I/ML's SLP/IDLE modes through firmware to drop quiescent current below 1 uA when the application is idle.

The 28-QFN exposed pad (EP) is the primary thermal path and must be soldered to a continuous ground plane for both thermal dissipation and electrical reference. Estimated: with theta_JA around 35 C/W on a 1 oz copper 4-layer board, the device dissipates up to ~3.5 W at 25 C ambient before approaching the 125 C junction limit. For continuous high-I/O switching loads, expand the ground copper pour beneath the EP and add thermal vias to inner ground planes to reduce junction temperature rise.

Always configure the MCLR pin (RE3) correctly: as a master-clear reset with a 10 kohm pull-up and a 100 nF cap to ground for noise immunity, or as a digital input only when configured in the configuration bits. Floating MCLR is a common cause of erratic resets. Also reserve RB6 and RB7 for ICSP programming - if your application drives these pins with external circuitry that interferes with the ICD, add series resistors (typically 10 kohm) to isolate the programmer from the application circuit.

Keep the crystal or external clock traces short (less than 10 mm) and surround them with a ground guard ring to minimize EMI pickup. When using the internal 8 MHz oscillator, RA6 and RA7 become general-purpose I/O. For noise-sensitive analog measurements, dedicate an independent analog ground plane tied to VSS at a single point near the MCU, and route analog input traces (AN0-AN13) away from PWM switching signals to minimize ADC crosstalk.

The MSSP peripheral can operate in SPI master up to 10 MHz and I2C up to 1 MHz on the PIC16F883. Use 4.7 kohm pull-ups on SDA and SCL for standard-mode I2C and 1 kohm to 2.2 kohm for fast-mode. For SPI with long PCB traces or cables, add a 33 ohm series resistor at the SCK driver output to dampen reflections. The AUSART TX pin should be source-terminated with a 100 ohm resistor when driving cables longer than 30 cm at baud rates above 115.2 kbps.
