PIC16LC662-04/PQ Visão geral

The Microchip Technology PIC16LC662-04/PQ is a low-power CMOS 8-bit microcontroller built on the PIC® 16C family architecture, offering 4K x 14-bit (7KB) One-Time-Programmable (OTP) program memory, 176 bytes of RAM, and 33 digital I/O pins in a 44-pin MQFP package (PQ). It is specified for a maximum operating frequency of 4 MHz and is intended for low-power embedded control designs that need OTP code storage with a generous peripheral set.

Background: An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer integrating a CPU core, program memory (ROM/OTP/Flash), working RAM, and peripheral interfaces. The PIC16C/LC families use a RISC-based Harvard architecture with a 14-bit wide instruction word, optimized for deterministic timing and small code footprint. The 'LC' prefix designates a low-voltage, low-power variant that supports operation down to ~3V from a regulated supply, while the 'C' suffix indicates the OTP program-memory technology.

Key features include 7KB (4K x 14) OTP program memory, 176 bytes of general-purpose SRAM, 33 bidirectional I/O pins, an integrated watchdog timer, an 8-bit timer/counter with prescaler, capture/compare/PWM modules, and multiple interrupt sources. The 44-MQFP PQ package gives a 0.8 mm terminal pitch and is suited for surface-mount assembly with adequate thermal dissipation for industrial ambient temperatures.

Typical applications include industrial control panels, sensor signal conditioning front-ends, low-power instrumentation, automotive body electronics (non-safety), white-goods controllers, and consumer appliance human-machine interfaces. The 33 I/O count supports keypad scanning, multi-LED driving, and direct interfacing to small alphanumeric LCD modules.

When designing with this part, note that OTP memory cannot be re-programmed in-circuit - prototypes should be evaluated on a UV-erasable equivalent (PIC16LC662-04/PQ windowed version) or an EPROM emulator before committing code. The 'LC' low-voltage variant also requires a clean 3-6V regulated supply; ripple above 50 mV can corrupt ADC readings on shared pins. Use the Microchip MPASM/MPLAB IDE toolchain with PIC16C66x device support for development.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, pinout, drop-in alternatives, and practical design notes that supplement the manufacturer datasheet for engineers evaluating end-of-life or long-life-cycle replacements.

Aplicações típicas

PIC16LC662-04/PQ é adequado para 6 aplicaçãos: Industrial Control Panel Interface, Sensor Signal Conditioning Front-End, White Goods / Home Appliance Controller, Automotive Body Electronics (Non-Safety), Consumer Appliance HMI Controller, Low-Power Instrumentation Module.

🏭

Industrial Control Panel Interface

The PIC16LC662-04/PQ fits industrial control panels thanks to its 33 bidirectional I/O pins, integrated watchdog timer, and CMOS low-power operation. The 4 MHz clock rate is sufficient for keypad scanning (3x4 matrix), 7-segment LED multiplexing, and relay control loops with deterministic timing. Designers can wire PORTA and PORTB directly to optocouplers driving 24V industrial loads, while PORTC handles a character LCD in 4-bit mode. Compared to flash-memory successors, the OTP program memory locks firmware permanently, preventing field tampering and IP extraction in harsh factory-floor environments.

🧩

Sensor Signal Conditioning Front-End

In sensor front-end designs, the PIC16LC662-04/PQ can digitize analog signals through its ADC channels and pre-process data before forwarding to a host. The 'LC' low-voltage core operates from ~3V rails, ideal for sensor modules powered by 3.3V LDO regulators. The 176 bytes of RAM support moving-average filters and simple peak-detection algorithms for vibration or temperature sensors. Integrated CCP modules generate precise PWM excitation signals for sensor bridge circuits. The 4 MHz instruction rate yields ~1 MHz effective throughput, suitable for sub-kHz sensor sampling rates.

🏭

White Goods / Home Appliance Controller

The PIC16LC662-04/PQ is well-suited for washing-machine, dishwasher, and oven controllers because the OTP program memory locks the firmware against unauthorized modification after certification. The 33 I/O count directly drives triac opto-isolators for motor direction control, solenoid valves, and heater relays. The integrated watchdog timer recovers the MCU from firmware lock-ups triggered by EMI from inductive loads. The CMOS low-power design maintains standby current under 1 mA for energy-star compliant appliances. The 44-MQFP footprint fits comfortably on appliance mainboards with adequate creepage distances for line-voltage safety.

🚗

Automotive Body Electronics (Non-Safety)

For non-safety automotive body modules such as interior lighting, seat-position memory, and HVAC flap control, the PIC16LC662-04/PQ provides sufficient processing for soft-start algorithms and LIN-slave node emulation using software bit-banging. The 33 I/O pins drive multiple LEDs, switches, and small DC motor bridges. While this part lacks AEC-Q100 automotive qualification, it is used in body modules where automotive-grade certification is not mandatory. Designers should pair it with external CAN/LIN transceivers for in-vehicle networking. The 44-MQFP PQ package withstands typical automotive underhood temperature profiles when conformal-coated.

🔧

Consumer Appliance HMI Controller

In consumer HMI controllers for coffee makers, rice cookers, and air purifiers, the PIC16LC662-04/PQ drives 7-segment displays, capacitive touch buttons, and small TFT panels through its 33 I/O. The OTP architecture ensures final firmware matches the certified version, blocking counterfeit reflash attempts. The 4 MHz instruction rate runs FSM-based menu navigation without perceivable lag. Integrated PWM outputs drive speaker buzzers for audible feedback. Low-voltage CMOS operation allows direct 3.3V battery backup during mains loss, preserving clock and user settings.

🔋

Low-Power Instrumentation Module

Battery-powered instrumentation modules benefit from the PIC16LC662-04/PQ 'LC' low-power CMOS design, which minimizes quiescent current for multi-year battery life. The MCU wakes from sleep on interrupt, performs ADC conversion of sensor data, transmits via UART, and returns to sleep - all within a 4 MHz instruction cycle. The 176 bytes of RAM buffer measurement packets before bulk transmission. The watchdog timer provides fail-safe recovery if firmware hangs during long unattended deployments. The 44-MQFP footprint is appropriate for hand-held instrument enclosures with adequate PCB area for the larger package.

Notas de projeto

OTP program memory cannot be re-programmed in-circuit; engineering prototypes should use the UV-erasable PIC16LC66x windowed variant (CERQUAD package) for iterative development before committing code to the OTP MQFP production part. Failing to validate firmware on a windowed device first can result in field bricking if bugs are found after the production run is started.

The 'LC' low-voltage variant requires a clean regulated supply between ~3V and 6V; ripple above 50 mV can corrupt ADC readings on shared analog pins. Place a 100 nF ceramic decoupling capacitor as close as possible to each VDD pin (pins 12 and 31), and add a bulk 10 uF tantalum or aluminum polymer capacitor near the MCU power pins. Avoid switching the MCU between low-power sleep and full operation without verifying the brown-out reset trip voltage matches your supply rail.

The 44-MQFP PQ package has a 0.8 mm lead pitch and gull-wing leads that require careful PCB land-pattern design. Use NSMD (non-solder-mask-defined) pads with a 1:1 pad-to-lead ratio and a 0.2 mm solder-mask expansion. Route power traces on inner layers with at least 0.5 oz copper weight to handle peak transient currents during I/O switching. Place the external crystal or resonator within 5 mm of the OSC1/OSC2 pins and guard it with a ground ring to minimize EMI coupling.
