PIC16LF1513-I/SS Visão geral

The Microchip PIC16LF1513-I/SS is an 8-bit RISC PIC® XLP™ 16F microcontroller with 7KB (4K x 14) flash program memory, 256 bytes RAM, 10-bit ADC, and 20 MHz CPU clock speed in a 28-pin SSOP package. It supports 25 I/O lines and operates from 1.8 V to 3.6 V with active core current below 1 mA across its full speed range. The 'LF' prefix denotes the low-power eXtreme Low Power (XLP) variant suitable for battery-operated designs.

An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU, RAM, non-volatile program memory, and peripherals around an 8-bit data bus. PIC microcontrollers use a Harvard RISC architecture: separate program and data buses allow instruction fetch and operand access in the same cycle, and a small fixed-width instruction set simplifies decoding and enables deterministic interrupt response.

Key features of the PIC16LF1513-I/SS include an internal 31 kHz to 32 MHz LF/HF oscillator with PLL option, two 8-bit timers plus one 16-bit timer, enhanced USART, two SPI/I2C master/slave modules, 10-bit ADC with up to 17 channels and 50 ksps conversion rate, and a wide -40 °C to +85 °C industrial temperature range. The 28-SSOP package (5.30 mm body, 0.65 mm pitch, gull-wing leads) enables compact designs where DIP packages would be too tall.

The device supports ICSP (In-Circuit Serial Programming) for in-field firmware updates and uses the standard 6-pin PICkit/Snap programming/debug interface, allowing field programming without removing the IC. Power-saving modes (Sleep, Doze, Idle) combined with XLP technology yield typical currents below 1 µA in deep Sleep, making the part attractive for always-on sensor nodes.

Typical applications include IoT sensor nodes, battery-powered instrumentation, white-goods and appliance controls, handheld consumer devices, low-cost motor control, and 4-20 mA sensor conditioning. The 256-byte RAM suits state-machine firmware rather than large buffer-heavy protocols. The wide VDD range simplifies integration into 2-cell AA and lithium coin-cell designs.

For designs requiring more program memory or peripherals, consider the same-package PIC16LF1516-I/SS (28KB flash) or PIC16LF1518-I/SS (32KB flash). When designing, observe the 4 ms power-on reset timer, leave ICSPDAT/ICSPCLK accessible for in-circuit programming, and provide adequate VDD decoupling within 5 mm of the supply pins.

Notas de projeto

Place a 100 nF ceramic decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of VDD (pin 20) and a bulk 10 µF tantalum or aluminum-polymer reservoir within 25 mm. For battery designs, add a 100 kΩ external pull-up on MCLR/VPP to prevent unintended resets during slow VDD rise. Estimated: Sleep current ~30 nA typical per Microchip XLP datasheet allows 3+ year coin-cell life at 1.8 V.

The 28-SSOP package has 0.65 mm lead pitch - use 0.3 mm wide copper pads with 0.4 mm mask openings. Route ICSP signals (ICSPCLK pin 18, ICSPDAT pin 21) as 0.2 mm traces kept short to a 6-pin programming header. The exposed-pad area on the bottom side of SSOP packages is connected to pin 1 lead frame; do not use it as a thermal pad. Reference Microchip SSOP-28 land pattern IPC-7351.

Do not enable the internal weak pull-ups on the ICSP pins (RB6/RB7); this prevents ICSP operation with PICkit and Snap programmers. Avoid analog signals on POR pins during the power-on reset interval (typically 72 ms with PWRT enabled). When using the ADC, ensure the AVDD supply rail is tied to VDD with its own 100 nF capacitor and that the acquisition time is configured for the source impedance (TACQ > 1 µs for 10 kΩ source).

Keep the analog input traces (AN0-AN17) short and away from switching signals to minimize ADC crosstalk. Reference Microchip AN1252 for EMI/ESD hardening on 8-bit PIC MCUs. Add a 33 Ω resistor in series with MCLR if the system must tolerate fast VDD transients to avoid unwanted resets. For high-noise environments, bypass the analog supply (AVDD) at the IC with separate 100 nF + 10 µF capacitors.
