PIC16LF15375-E/P Visão geral

The Microchip Technology PIC16LF15375-E/P is an 8-bit PIC16F-series microcontroller featuring a 32 MHz CPU, 14 KB (8K x 14) of Flash program memory, and 1 KB of RAM, housed in a 40-pin PDIP (0.600 inch, 15.24 mm) through-hole package. The device is part of the PIC16(L)F153xx family, which combines eXtreme Low-Power (XLP) operation with Core Independent Peripherals (CIPs) and Intelligent Analog peripherals for a broad range of low-power embedded applications.

A microcontroller (microcontroller = MCU) is a compact integrated computer containing a CPU, non-volatile program memory (typically Flash), working RAM, and a configurable set of on-chip peripherals such as timers, ADCs, communication interfaces, and GPIO. PIC microcontrollers use a Harvard RISC architecture with a small, deterministic instruction set optimized for low power and fast interrupt response. PIC MCUs sit at the bottom of the embedded-computing hierarchy: microcontroller -> embedded processor -> system-on-chip -> semiconductor. The 'LF' prefix indicates the low-voltage Flash variant optimized for 1.8 V to 3.6 V supply operation.

Key features include four 10-bit PWMs, a comparator, a 5-bit DAC, a 10-bit ADC, a Complementary Waveform Generator (CWG), four Configurable Logic Cells (CLCs), two EUSART, SPI, and I2C peripherals. The device supports the XLP sleep current down to sub-microamp levels, making it suitable for battery-powered designs, while the EUSART and SPI/I2C peripherals enable networked sensor and HMI connectivity. Intelligent Analog integrates the ADC, DAC, comparator, and reference to reduce BOM cost.

The architecture combines a RISC core with hardware state-machine peripherals (CLC, CWG) that operate without CPU intervention, allowing deterministic timing for motor control, lighting, and power-conversion sub-systems. Core Independent Peripherals offload tasks from the core, freeing MIPS for application logic and lowering average power consumption by allowing the CPU to sleep while peripherals run.

Typical applications include IoT sensor nodes, battery-powered wearables, home automation, low-power wireless sensor hubs, industrial control panels, and consumer electronics with e-paper or segment displays. The 40-pin PDIP package simplifies prototyping on breadboards and through-hole evaluation boards, while the wide peripheral set supports multiple communication stacks concurrently.

When designing with this part, budget Flash and RAM carefully against your protocol stack (BLE, LoRa, or proprietary) and avoid using the ICD pins as GPIO when in-circuit debugger operation is required. Selecting the LF variant (instead of the F variant) gives a 1.8 V minimum supply for direct Li-ion battery operation but caps the maximum frequency at 32 MHz rather than the F variant's higher ranges.

Aplicações típicas

PIC16LF15375-E/P é adequado para 6 aplicaçãos: Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Node, Home Automation Control Hub, Low-Power Wearable Health Monitor, Industrial Sensor Transmitter (4-20 mA loop), Consumer Electronics with Segment LCD, Automotive Body Electronics (non-safety).

🧩

Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Node

The PIC16LF15375-E/P is purpose-built for battery-powered IoT sensor nodes that demand sub-microamp sleep current and deterministic peripheral behaviour. The XLP nanoWatt sleep modes drop the core current below 1 uA in deep sleep while the four Configurable Logic Cells (CLCs) keep sensor scanning and timing functions running without waking the CPU. Combined with the 10-bit ADC for analog sensor reads, the 5-bit DAC for bias generation, and two EUSART plus SPI/I2C for a sub-GHz radio module, the device fits inside an LPWAN sensor SKU that needs to run a year on a coin cell. The 1.8-3.6 V supply range directly accepts the battery stack with no boost regulator, simplifying BOM and improving overall efficiency.

🏭

Home Automation Control Hub

For home-automation control hubs the PIC16LF15375-E/P delivers enough peripherals to bridge multiple sensor buses without external logic. Two EUSART channels enable simultaneous RS-485 and debug-printf paths, while SPI and I2C manage EEPROM storage and digital sensor arrays. The four CLCs allow glue-logic implementation of wake-up pulse trains, mux decoders, or PWM-synchronization between motors and lighting without burdening the CPU. With 14 KB Flash and 1 KB RAM, the device has headroom for a small Zigbee/Thread translation layer on a local gateway. The 40-pin PDIP package simplifies breadboard prototyping and field-replaceable module design during development.

📱

Low-Power Wearable Health Monitor

Wearable health monitors benefit from the PIC16LF15375-E/P's XLP technology that extends battery life, along with its small set of intelligent analog peripherals for biosignal acquisition. The 10-bit ADC reads photoplethysmography (PPG) or skin-conductance sensor outputs, while the integrated comparator handles threshold detection and zero-crossing events without waking the CPU. The 4 PWMs drive vibration-motor alerts and dual-LED indicators. With a 32 MHz MIPS budget the device runs simple Kalman-filter heart-rate algorithms in real time at modest current draw, while 1 KB RAM accommodates short signal buffers. The 1.8 V minimum supply lets the system run directly off a Li-ion coin cell for days of continuous use.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Transmitter (4-20 mA loop)

The PIC16LF15375-E/P operates effectively in industrial 4-20 mA loop-powered sensor heads where the supply rail typically sits between 12 V and 24 V derived from the loop current. While the MCU itself runs at 3.3 V, an external LDO (such as the Microchip MCP1700) drops the loop voltage and the LF supply range starts directly from a partially discharged loop. The integrated 10-bit ADC with internal reference measures the bridge sensor, the comparator detects loop fault conditions, and the 5-bit DAC generates calibration trim voltages during production test. The 40-pin PDIP package simplifies through-hole construction for harsh-environment enclosures.

💡

Consumer Electronics with Segment LCD

The PIC16LF15375-E/P drives segment-LCD display modules in consumer electronics with low BOM cost thanks to its integrated LCD-driving peripheral set, internal voltage reference, and configurable logic cells. The 32 MHz CPU can drive the segment refresh, manage button inputs through the CLC interrupt-free path, and handle IR or BLE pairing logic concurrently. The 5-bit DAC supplies bias voltages for contrast adjustment, while the comparator performs brown-out detection on the supply. The 40-pin PDIP package is breadboard-friendly for prototype development of thermostat controls, kitchen timers, and small appliances.

🚗

Automotive Body Electronics (non-safety)

For non-safety automotive body electronics such as ambient lighting controllers, HVAC trim panels, and seat-position sensors, the PIC16LF15375-E/P provides adequate peripheral coverage at a competitive price point. The four PWMs drive LED drivers or small DC motors, while the comparator monitors current-sense feedback. Two EUSART channels enable LIN bus communication and K-line diagnostics. While this E temperature grade part is rated to 125C, true safety-critical automotive applications should select an AEC-Q100 qualified Microchip part instead. The 40-pin PDIP footprint suits development harnesses and engineering validation, with the F variant available for 5 V bus designs.

Notas de projeto

The PIC16LF15375-E/P's LF supply range is 1.8 V to 3.6 V. For a 3.3 V regulated rail, place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor as close as possible to each VDD pin (pins 11, 21, 31), plus a bulk 10 uF on the main supply. If the design will be powered directly from a Li-ion cell (3.0-4.2 V full charge), add an LDO such as the Microchip MCP1700 to drop to 3.3 V. The MCU's sleep current can drop below 1 uA in XLP sleep with peripherals disabled - budget for this in battery-life calculations.

Pin 1 (RE3/MCLR) is shared between digital I/O and Master Clear; if MCLR is enabled in configuration words and the pin is driven low at power-up, the MCU resets. Use a 10 kohm pull-up on MCLR unless you intend to use RE3 as a digital input with MCLR disabled. RB6/RB7 are shared with ICSPCLK/ICSPDAT for in-circuit programming - do not load these pins with strong pull-downs. Note that the LF variant tops out at 32 MHz while the F variant supports higher frequencies.

When laying out the 40-pin PDIP footprint, route the analog AGND/AVSS pins first and keep the analog traces short and isolated from digital switching lines. Place the 100 nF decoupling caps within 5 mm of each VDD pin. Route the ICSPDAT/ICSPCLK pair as a matched-length pair to the programming header. If using the 32 MHz internal oscillator, keep it away from sensitive analog traces to minimise clock-feedthrough on the ADC. The PDIP package simplifies through-hole assembly for prototypes but plan for an SMD migration (e.g., 44-pin TQFP) for production.

When using the CLCs as glue logic, configure the inputs through the CLC input-select matrix to avoid glitches during configuration changes. For the EUSART in RS-485 mode, add a small (100 ohm) series resistor to limit reflections. The 10-bit ADC requires a quiet reference; use the internal Fixed Voltage Reference (FVR) buffer rather than VDD when the supply is noisy. With proper CLC configuration the CWG can generate dead-band-controlled complementary PWM without CPU overhead, freeing the core for application logic.
