PIC16LF872-I/SP Visão geral

The Microchip Technology PIC16LF872-I/SP is a low-power 8-bit CMOS Flash microcontroller (MCU) from the PIC16F family, offering 3.5KB (2K x 14 words) of Flash program memory, 128 bytes of SRAM, and 64 bytes of EEPROM data memory in a 28-pin SPDIP (Skinny Plastic DIP) through-hole package. Operating from a 2.0V to 5.5V supply (LF variant) at up to 20MHz clock speed with 200ns instruction cycle, the device provides 22 digital I/O pins, five channels of 10-bit analog-to-digital conversion (ADC), one 8-bit and one 16-bit timer/counter, an MSSP (SPI/I2C) port, a USART module, and an in-circuit debugger (ICD) interface.

An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU, memory, and peripherals around an 8-bit data bus. The PIC16F family from Microchip is built on a RISC architecture that executes one instruction per cycle (200ns at 20MHz), making it efficient for deterministic embedded control. Within the broader hierarchy of semiconductor devices, 8-bit MCUs sit below 16-bit and 32-bit MCUs in computational power but excel in low power, low cost, and real-time interrupt response. The PIC16LF872 is the low-voltage (LF) variant optimized for battery-backed and portable designs.

Key features include self-programming support via ICSP (In-Circuit Serial Programming), five 10-bit ADC channels with 200ksps throughput, and Microchip's PIC microcontroller instruction set with only 35 single-word instructions - making it easy to program in assembly or C (via MPLAB X and XC8 compiler). The LF variant extends the supply range down to 2.0V (compared to 4.5V minimum for the standard F variant), enabling direct operation from two AA cells or lithium coin cells.

The architecture combines a Harvard-style program/data bus, a 14-bit instruction word, and dedicated peripheral modules. The 10-bit ADC is suitable for sensor reading (temperature, light, voltage) at moderate precision, while the USART supports RS-232/RS-485 asynchronous communication up to several hundred kbps. The integrated ICD allows in-system debugging without an external emulator, reducing development cost.

Typical applications include industrial sensor interfaces, low-power remote controls, battery-powered instrumentation, HVAC controllers, small appliance controls, and educational/development platforms. The wide 2.0V-5.5V range makes it ideal for systems powered by 2-3 AA cells, lithium primaries, or USB-derived 5V rails. Designers also use the PIC16LF872 in mixed-signal front-ends that need a small amount of intelligence for ADC sequencing and data reporting.

When designing with the PIC16LF872-I/SP, ensure decoupling with a 100nF ceramic capacitor close to VDD, configure MCLR with the proper pull-up, and use ICSP for field updates. Choose the LF variant when operating below 4.5V, and the standard PIC16F872-I/SP when a 4.5V-5.5V supply is guaranteed and EEPROM endurance is the same.

Notas de projeto

Decouple VDD with a 100nF ceramic capacitor placed within 5mm of the pin, plus a 10uF bulk capacitor if the supply traces are longer than 50mm. The PIC16LF872-I/SP draws approximately 2-15mA active at 20MHz depending on I/O loading; during SLEEP, current drops to microamp range. For battery designs, use the LF variant's 2.0V minimum to enable direct 2x AA or CR2032 operation. Always include a power-on reset delay implemented in firmware by enabling the PWRT and OST configuration bits.

Configure MCLR (pin 1) with a 10k pull-up to VDD if not used as an external reset input; leaving MCLR floating can cause spurious resets. The ICSP/ICD pins (RB6/PGClock, RB7/PGData) must not be used for high-current loads during debug sessions. When using the ADC, add source impedance under 10kOhm to avoid acquisition errors - the S/H capacitor needs time to settle. Brown-out reset (BOR) should be enabled for robust operation on noisy supplies.

For the 28-SPDIP package, allocate 0.300 inch (7.62mm) row spacing with standard 0.100 inch (2.54mm) pitch through-holes. The exposed die pad is on the bottom of the DIP package; provide thermal relief on ground planes but keep VDD traces short and wide. Place the decoupling capacitor as close to pin 20 (VDD) as possible, ideally with a via-free trace. Route the oscillator traces (OSC1/OSC2) short and away from high-current switching signals to avoid clock jitter.

For ICSP/ICD operation, expose RB6/PGC and RB7/PGD plus MCLR/VPP and VDD/VSS on a 6-pin header (standard RJ-12 or 0.1-inch header). Add a current-limiting resistor (typically 470 ohm) in series with MCLR if external reset components (buttons, supervisory ICs) drive it. Route the analog inputs RA0-RA5 away from digital switching signals; place a ground guard ring around sensitive analog traces to reduce crosstalk into the ADC.
