PIC16LF877-04I/L Visão geral

The Microchip Technology PIC16LF877-04I/L is an 8-bit RISC microcontroller from the PIC16 family, featuring 14KB of Flash program memory, 368 bytes of RAM, and 33 digital I/O pins, housed in a 44-pin PLCC package (16.59x16.59 mm). It executes instructions at a 4 MHz clock rate with a 200 ns instruction cycle, drawing low operating current from a 2.5V/3.3V/5V supply, and is rated for the industrial temperature range of -40C to +85C.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU, memory (Flash for program code, RAM for data, EEPROM for non-volatile storage), and peripherals (timers, ADC, communication interfaces). Within the broader semiconductor taxonomy, an MCU is a subset of microprocessors that adds on-chip memory and I/O; the PIC16 family from Microchip is one of the industry's longest-running 8-bit MCU lines, prized for its deterministic architecture and low cost. The "LF" prefix denotes the low-voltage variant optimized for battery-powered and 3.3V systems, while the "F" indicates Flash-based (re)programmability in-circuit.

Key differentiating features of the PIC16LF877-04I/L include 14KB (8K x 14) of self-programmable Flash, 256 bytes of EEPROM, a 10-bit ADC with up to 8 channels, two 8-bit and one 16-bit timers, a USART, MSSP (SPI/I2C), and PSP. Its Harvard RISC architecture with 35 single-word instructions enables compact, predictable code, and the integrated ICD (In-Circuit Debug) supports two-wire in-system programming and debugging. The "I" suffix in the part number indicates the industrial temperature grade, and the "L" denotes the PLCC package.

Typical applications include industrial control and automation modules, sensor signal conditioning front-ends, low-power data loggers, HVAC controllers, automotive body electronics (non-safety), and consumer appliance interfaces. The wide peripheral set and proven toolchain (MPLAB X IDE, XC8 compiler, PICkit programmers) make it a workhorse for legacy and maintenance designs.

When designing with the PIC16LF877-04I/L, ensure the PLCC socket or solder footprint matches the 44-pin J-lead land pattern, and add a 100 nF decoupling capacitor adjacent to each VDD/VSS pair. For brown-out-sensitive applications, enable the internal BOR module in the configuration bits and consider a watchdog timer for unattended operation.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in alternatives within the same 44-PLCC footprint, and practical design notes not found in the manufacturer datasheet, enabling engineers to evaluate second-source options and lifecycle status quickly.

Aplicações típicas

PIC16LF877-04I/L é adequado para 6 aplicaçãos: Industrial Control and Automation, Battery-Powered Data Logger, HVAC Climate Control Module, Automotive Body Electronics (Non-Safety), Consumer Appliance Interface, Sensor Signal Conditioning Front-End.

🏭

Industrial Control and Automation

The PIC16LF877-04I/L is a strong fit for industrial PLC and sensor-interface modules because of its 33 I/O pins, 10-bit ADC with up to 8 channels, and 2.5V-5.5V operating range. Its -40C to +85C industrial temperature rating allows deployment inside enclosed control cabinets and factory-floor equipment where ambient swings are common. Placed as the supervisory MCU on a 24V-powered sensor-conditioning board, it reads analog inputs, drives optoisolated outputs, and communicates via USART to a higher-level controller; the LF low-voltage core reduces heat in always-on installations. Compared with discrete logic, it consolidates timing, ADC, and serial I/O in one PLCC-44 package, lowering BOM count.

🔋

Battery-Powered Data Logger

The PIC16LF877-04I/L suits portable battery data loggers thanks to its low-voltage 2.5V operation and PIC16LF-series reduced quiescent current relative to the standard F variant. The 14KB Flash stores sample buffers and logging schedules, while 256 bytes of EEPROM retain calibration constants across battery swaps. Engineers typically pair it with an external RTC and microSD card over SPI, waking from sleep via the WDT or external interrupt to sample sensors at user-defined intervals. The 44-PLCC socket allows factory pre-programming, useful for OEM replacement modules. Its 4 MHz ceiling is more than adequate for low-rate logging where energy per sample dominates battery-life math.

🌡️

HVAC Climate Control Module

Climate-control and thermostat modules benefit from the PIC16LF877-04I/L's combination of 8 ADC channels for temperature/humidity sensing, PWM-capable timers for triac-driven fan/valve control, and a USART for display panel interconnection. The -40C to +85C industrial grade covers rooftop and basement HVAC equipment enclosures. Its deterministic 200 ns instruction cycle simplifies the timing of zero-cross detection routines that switch triacs at line-voltage AC. The 33 I/O pins accept multiple key inputs, relay outputs, and a character-LCD interface without external I/O expanders. Migration to the newer PIC16F887-I/L is straightforward when additional peripherals are needed.

🚗

Automotive Body Electronics (Non-Safety)

The PIC16LF877-04I/L is appropriate for non-safety automotive body modules such as interior lighting controllers, mirror adjusters, and accessory multiplexers where AEC-Q100 qualification is not mandatory. The industrial -40C to +85C range handles cabin-temperature extremes, and the 5V-tolerant I/O can drive relay coils and LED arrays directly. The MSSP peripheral supports both SPI (for dashboard displays) and I2C (for sensor clusters), consolidating communication in a single MCU. The 14KB Flash accommodates CAN-style soft-protocol stacks for low-speed body networks when paired with an external MCP2551 CAN transceiver.

🏠

Consumer Appliance Interface

Washing machines, microwave ovens, and dishwasher control boards frequently use the PIC16LF877-04I/L because it integrates ADC, timers, USART, and enough I/O to replace multiple 555/CMOS glue-logic chips. The 44-PLCC socket allows field service replacements without re-soldering, a key benefit for white-goods repair. With 14KB Flash, designers can embed UI state machines, fault diagnostics, and buzzer-driven alerts in firmware, and the EEPROM retains user preferences across power cycles. The PIC16LF877-04I/L's wide VDD tolerance simplifies designs that run from rectified 12V rails through a small linear regulator.

🔬

Sensor Signal Conditioning Front-End

For analog sensor signal-conditioning boards, the PIC16LF877-04I/L delivers an integrated 10-bit ADC, op-amp-friendly analog references, and 25 mA source/sink capable digital I/O in one PLCC package. It can digitize bridge, thermistor, or photodiode inputs, perform linearization in firmware, and output via SPI/I2C to a host processor. The 2.5V minimum VDD lets it share a low-voltage rail with modern sensors, while its industrial temperature grade suits outdoor and process-control deployments. Compared with discrete ADC-plus-logic designs, this MCU shrinks the BOM, simplifies calibration via firmware, and provides on-chip EEPROM for storing compensation coefficients.

Place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of each VDD/VSS pair (pins 11/12 and 31/32) to suppress switching transients. For battery applications drawing < 10 uA average, add a 10 uF bulk capacitor near the VDD pins to handle inrush during ADC sampling; estimated based on 8 channels x 20 uA each per the PIC16F87X datasheet. The brown-out reset should be enabled in configuration bits (BOREN = 1) when VDD may sag below 2.5 V, otherwise the MCU may execute errant code from corrupted Flash.

When using the 44-PLCC socket variant, ensure the PCB footprint matches the J-lead land pattern specified in Microchip package drawing 44-PLCC-16.59. For prototype rework, a PLCC extraction tool is required - do not pry the chip with a flat-blade screwdriver, as this bends the J-leads. If planning future SMT migration, consider routing the design so that a 44-TQFP (PIC16LF877-04/PT) can be placed on a small adapter board without requiring a full PCB respin.

Do not leave the MCLR/VPP pin floating - tie it to VDD through a 10 kohm resistor with a 100 nF cap to ground, otherwise spurious resets will occur in noisy environments. When using ICSP, isolate the PGD/PGC pins (RB6/RB7) from external circuitry that would load them below 5 kohm, since the programmer drives these lines actively and additional loads can prevent reliable programming. Configuration bits must be set explicitly - the factory default has the watchdog timer disabled and the oscillator set to RC, which is rarely the intended configuration for production.

Long analog input traces (> 50 mm) should be guarded by a ground trace or surrounded by ground pour to reduce digital-noise coupling into the ADC. Use the AVSS pin (separate analog ground) if the design exposes it; on the 44-PLCC this is shared with VSS, so place the analog input filtering capacitors close to the analog pins to minimize the ADC acquisition time error. Estimated: at 4 MHz Fosc, the ADC acquisition window is approximately 20 us, which sets the maximum source impedance at 5 kohm for 10-bit accuracy.
