PIC17C43T-16/L Visão geral

The Microchip Technology PIC17C43T-16/L is an 8-bit RISC microcontroller from the PIC® 17C family featuring 8KB (4K x 16) of One-Time Programmable (OTP) program memory, 454 bytes of RAM, and a 16 MHz maximum clock speed, packaged in a 44-pin PLCC (Plastic Leaded Chip Carrier) with J-leads. It operates from a 4.5 V to 6 V supply and is targeted at commercial temperature range (0 °C to +70 °C) applications such as industrial automation and consumer electronics.

What is an 8-bit OTP microcontroller? An 8-bit OTP MCU is a microcontroller built around an 8-bit data path whose program memory is a One-Time Programmable EPROM cell—each bit can be programmed exactly once with an EPROM writer and exposed to UV light for erasure. These parts occupy a middle position in the hierarchy: microcontroller -> embedded controller -> 8-bit MCU -> OTP EPROM MCU -> RISC controller -> semiconductor. The PIC17C43 uses Microchip's enhanced PIC 17C core, which delivers up to 8.25 MIPS (121 ns instruction cycle) and supports 58 single-word instructions, making it significantly faster than legacy PIC16C5X devices while remaining source-code compatible.

Key features include 33 digital I/O lines organized as 4 ports, a hardware multiply (8 x 8 in one cycle), 16-bit data bus architecture, Power-on Reset (POR), Brown-out Reset, Watchdog Timer (WDT), Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) peripherals, a Capture/Compare/PWM (CCP) module, and an 8-level deep hardware stack. The OTP memory is organized as 4K x 16, so each instruction word is 16 bits wide and fetches in one cycle.

The PIC17C43 architecture extends the PIC16CXX instruction set with hardware multiplication, a 16-bit wide program word, and four register page pointers. It is upward-compatible with the PIC16C5X, PIC12CXXX and PIC16CXX families, allowing code migration from smaller PICs with minimal redesign. The 16 MHz oscillator yields a 4 MHz instruction rate (divide-by-4) and an effective 8.25 MIPS throughput.

Typical applications include industrial automation controllers, motor control, HVAC, security alarm panels, consumer appliance control, smart-card readers, and embedded control modules. The 33 I/O lines are sufficient for keypad scanning, LED matrix driving, and parallel sensor interfacing. The PWM and CCP modules make the PIC17C43 well-suited for brush-DC and stepper motor drive designs in low-cost industrial equipment.

Designers should note that the PIC17C43 has been replaced by the PIC18F family (Microchip recommends PIC18F4220). New designs should target the PIC18F, but the PIC17C43T-16/L remains available for legacy maintenance and repair. The OTP memory cannot be re-programmed, so production firmware must be fully validated before device programming.

Notas de projeto

The PIC17C43T-16/L uses OTP (One-Time Programmable) EPROM memory—it cannot be re-programmed in-circuit. Once the EPROM cell is written, firmware bugs require UV-light erasure (not possible on the plastic PLCC package) or device replacement. Design teams should validate firmware on a windowed PIC17C43/JW prototype before committing to OTP production units. Bit-level security fuse (CP bit) prevents code readback but is irreversible; triple-check code before enabling. Programming voltage (VPP) is applied to the MCLR/VPP pin (pin 9); use a Microchip-approved programmer such as PICSTART Plus or MPLAB PM3.

Operating supply is 4.5 V to 6.0 V (5 V nominal); the part is NOT 3.3 V tolerant. Use a 5 V LDO regulator such as the LM7805 or MCP1700-5002E. Brown-out reset (BOR) is enabled by configuration bits and should remain enabled to protect against supply droop during motor inrush or relay switching. Decoupling: place a 100 nF ceramic capacitor as close as possible to each VDD/VSS pair (pins 11/10 and 44/43), plus a 10 uF bulk capacitor on the supply rail. The MCLR pin (pin 9) should be pulled up to VDD through a 10 kOhm resistor and decoupled with a 100 nF capacitor to prevent spurious resets.

The 44-pin PLCC package requires a 1.27 mm pitch socket or land pattern. Place the PLCC socket with pin 1 indicator oriented to match the dot/notch on the device. Keep analog inputs (RA0-RA5) physically separated from PWM outputs and switching nodes to minimize coupling; route the crystal traces (OSC1/OSC2, pins 7/8) as short as possible with a ground guard ring. For high-noise environments, add a 4-layer PCB with dedicated ground plane. Leave room for a 4-pin ICSP header (VDD, VSS, MCLR/VPP, RB6/PGD, RB7/PGC) for production programming.

The PIC17C43T-16/L I/O pins can source/sink 20 mA per pin (40 mA per port), with a total package limit of 200 mA. For LED driving or relay control, use a driver transistor (e.g., 2N2222 or MOSFET) rather than direct pin drive. Series-terminate clock or high-speed signal lines with 33-100 ohm resistors if ringing is observed. The Capture/Compare/PWM (CCP) outputs generate fast edges (10 ns rise/fall); for PWM frequencies above 20 kHz, use shielded cable or twisted-pair wiring to external drivers. If using the analog inputs (RA0-RA5), add an external buffer op-amp to maintain source impedance below 10 kOhm for ADC accuracy.
