PIC18F2580-E/SP Visão geral

The Microchip Technology PIC18F2580-E/SP is an 8-bit PIC18 enhanced flash microcontroller featuring 32 KB (16K x 16) of program memory, 1536 bytes of RAM, and an integrated ECAN (Controller Area Network) module, packaged in a 28-pin SPDIP through-hole form factor. It executes instructions at up to 25 MHz (10 MIPS) from its nanoWatt Technology-managed core, and integrates a 10-bit ADC, multiple timers, and 25 digital I/O pins suitable for embedded control.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer containing a CPU core, program memory (Flash/ROM), data memory (RAM), and a rich set of peripheral interfaces (ADC, timers, communication ports, GPIO). The PIC18F family sits at the mid-range of Microchip's 8-bit portfolio: more capable than baseline PIC10/12/16 parts but architecturally simpler than 16-bit PIC24 or dsPIC devices. PIC18 MCUs combine a RISC Harvard architecture with a wide 16-bit instruction word, giving them C-friendly orthogonality and deterministic interrupt latency. They are widely deployed in automotive body electronics, industrial control nodes, low-cost sensor hubs, and consumer appliances where deterministic 8-bit performance at low power is more important than raw MHz.

The PIC18F2580's key features include 32 KB of self-programmable Flash with internal read-while-write support, 256 bytes of EEPROM, 25 mA source/sink per I/O, and an integrated ECAN controller compliant with CAN 2.0B active specification supporting both standard (11-bit) and extended (29-bit) identifiers. Its nanoWatt Technology power management offers multiple idle and sleep modes with typical currents in the nanoampere range, making the part appropriate for battery-powered or energy-harvesting applications. The on-chip 10-bit ADC delivers up to 8 channels with automatic acquisition, and dual analog comparators add further mixed-signal integration without external components.

Technically, the device uses a 16-bit instruction path with 8-bit data path, supports in-circuit serial programming (ICSP) via two pins, and exposes an Enhanced Universal Synchronous Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter (EUSART) plus a Master SSP supporting SPI and I2C. Five CCP/ECCP modules provide PWM and capture/compare functions for motor and power-control loops. Together these blocks give the PIC18F2580 an unusually complete peripheral set inside an 8-bit MCU.

Typical applications include CAN node endpoints for automotive body and chassis modules, industrial sensor interfacing with ECAN backbones, low-cost motor control subsystems, HVAC controller boards, and general-purpose embedded control where deterministic 8-bit performance is preferred. The wide 2.0 V to 5.5 V operating voltage range and industrial -40C to +125C temperature rating make it suitable for harsh environment deployments.

When designing with this device, ensure the ICSP clock and data lines are reserved (typically RB6/RB7) and that the ECAN transceiver supply is properly decoupled near the TX/RX pins. The ECAN module requires explicit configuration of acceptance filters and bit-timing registers before bus communication; reference Microchip AN730 or the device family datasheet for correct oscillator selection.

Notas de projeto

Estimated: the PIC18F2580-E/SP draws approximately 16 mA at 25 MHz from a 5 V supply and under 100 nA in sleep mode with nanoWatt Technology. Decouple VDD with a 100 nF ceramic capacitor placed within 5 mm of the VDD pin, plus a bulk 10 uF tantalum or aluminum capacitor at the board supply input. For CAN nodes, also decouple the MCP2551 transceiver VCC locally. Use the brown-out reset (BOR) and low-voltage detect (LVD) features to protect against supply droops.

Do not confuse the 28-pin SPDIP PIC18F2580 with the 40-pin PIC18F4580; the 40-pin variant adds more I/O but uses a different package. Ensure ICSP pins RB6 (PGD) and RB7 (PGC) are not permanently pulled low by external circuitry during programming, or use isolation resistors. The ECAN module must have its acceptance filters and bit-timing registers properly configured before bus traffic begins; reference Microchip AN730 for correct oscillator and baud-rate selection.

For the SPDIP-28 through-hole package, place the part with at least 0.5 inch of clearance around the IC for hand-soldering and rework. Keep the ECAN differential pair (CANTX/CANRX to MCP2551) routed as a short matched-length pair with 100 ohm differential impedance if traces exceed 25 mm, and place the transceiver within 50 mm of the bus connector. Provide a separate analog ground island for the AVSS pin if the design uses the ADC with high-impedance sensors.
