PIC18F25K22-E/ML Visão geral

The Microchip Technology PIC18F25K22-E/ML is a 28-pin, 8-bit PIC microcontroller in a 6x6 mm QFN package with exposed thermal pad, featuring 32 KB of Flash program memory, 1.5 KB of data EEPROM, and 1.5 KB of SRAM. It runs up to 20 MHz at 5 V (64 MHz internal oscillator) with nanoWatt XLP extreme-low-power technology, supports an operating voltage range of 1.8 V to 5.5 V, and provides 25 general-purpose I/O pins. The 'E' suffix indicates the extended industrial temperature grade of -40 °C to +125 °C.

A PIC18 microcontroller is a member of Microchip's 8-bit PIC (Peripheral Interface Controller) family, which uses a modified Harvard RISC architecture. Within the broader taxonomy, it sits under: microcontroller -> MCU -> embedded controller -> semiconductor. The PIC18F2X/4XK22 sub-family introduced nanoWatt XLP technology, peripheral enhancements, and design improvements that make these devices logical choices for many high-performance and power-sensitive applications where extended battery life and rich peripheral integration matter.

Key features include 12-bit ADC with up to 17 channels, multiple communication interfaces (two MSSP for I2C/SPI, two enhanced USART with LIN support), up to four 16-bit timers, two comparators, and a charge time measurement unit (CTMU) for capacitive touch sensing. The CTMU enables cost-effective mTouch capacitive touch interfaces without external analog components, and the PMP (Parallel Master Port) supports direct connection to graphical LCDs or external memory.

The PIC18F25K22 uses a 16-bit instruction word with a 8-bit data path, delivering C-compiler-friendly code density and deterministic interrupt latency. Internal oscillator calibration and fail-safe clock monitor improve robustness in electrically noisy environments, while wide operating voltage and rich peripheral set reduce BOM cost.

Typical applications include low-power IoT edge nodes, industrial sensor interfaces, automotive body and HVAC modules (AEC-Q100 grade 1), capacitive touch user interfaces, portable medical and consumer devices, and USB-less embedded control requiring long battery life. The wide voltage range and flexible peripherals also suit battery chargers, smart meters, and home appliances.

When designing with this device, place the decoupling capacitor as close to VDD as possible, leave the exposed pad (EP) soldered to a continuous ground plane for thermal dissipation, and configure unused I/O as outputs to minimize current draw. For low-power designs, leverage the multiple idle/sleep modes and the RTCC with calendar functionality.

Notas de projeto

Solder the QFN-28 exposed pad (pin 29) to a continuous ground plane with at least 8 thermal vias to a bottom-layer copper pour. Without proper EP soldering, junction-to-ambient thermal resistance (theta_JA) rises from ~28 C/W to >80 C/W, causing thermal shutdown at higher ambient temperatures. Place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor within 3 mm of the VDD pin, and add a 10 uF bulk capacitor at the board-level for transient load response.

For low-power battery designs, leverage the nanoWatt XLP sleep modes (Sleep, Idle, RTCC modes) and use the RTCC with a 32.768 kHz crystal on SOSCO/SOSCI for timekeeping under 500 nA. Configure all unused I/O pins as outputs driving low to eliminate floating-input leakage currents (typically 50-200 nA per floating pin). Use the internal LFINTOSC for ultra-low-power wake-up rather than the HFINTOSC.

Do not exceed 10 MHz internal oscillator at VDD below 3.0 V - the Microchip datasheet specifies that full 64 MHz operation requires VDD >= 3.0 V. Always configure the PPS (Peripheral Pin Select) registers on EUSART and MSSP peripherals before enabling them, or the pins will not function. For LIN applications, enable the EUSART LIN helper hardware and configure baud rate to 19200 bps before entering Normal mode. Also verify MCLR is tied to VDD via a 10 kohm pull-up if not using external reset.

Place the 32.768 kHz crystal within 5 mm of SOSCO/SOSCI pins (RC0/RC1) and route its traces over an isolated ground island connected to the MCU VSS at one point only. Keep analog (ADC) traces away from switching signals and PWM outputs by at least 3 trace widths. The 12-bit ADC achieves 1 LSB accuracy only when the Vref source impedance is below 2.5 kohm, so add a 100 nF + 10 uF bypass directly at the Vref+ pin.
