PIC18F47K42T-I/ML Visão geral

The Microchip Technology PIC18F47K42T-I/ML is an 8-bit PIC microcontroller in the PIC18FxxK42 family, featuring 128 KB (64K x 16) of Flash program memory, 8 KB of SRAM, and a 64 MHz operating frequency in a 44-pin QFN (8x8) package with exposed thermal pad. The trailing T-suffix denotes tape-and-reel packaging, while the I/ML suffix indicates the industrial temperature grade (-40C to +85C) and the 44-VQFN MLP package.

An 8-bit microcontroller is a single-chip CPU that processes data in 8-bit words and integrates Flash program memory, SRAM, EEPROM, and peripherals on one die. Microcontrollers sit below microprocessors in the embedded hierarchy and above simple digital logic in complexity: they pair a CPU core with non-volatile memory, A/D converters, timers, and serial interfaces so a single IC replaces what otherwise would require many discrete parts.

Key features include Core Independent Peripherals (CIPs) such as CWG, CCP, PWM, NCO, and configurable logic cells, 12-bit ADC with computation (ADC2), multiple serial interfaces (UART, SPI, I2C), and Microchip's eXtreme Low-Power (XLP) technology for battery-friendly designs. The device operates across 2.3V to 5.5V VDD with on-board voltage regulator options.

The architecture is built on an enhanced PIC18 RISC core with a hardware multiply and a 32-level hardware stack, optimizing throughput and code density. The device integrates DMA, an instruction cache, and a high-endurance Flash rated for 10K erase/write cycles, plus built-in touch-sensing via the 12-bit Analog-to-Digital Converter with computation.

Typical applications include industrial IoT sensor nodes, home automation controllers, low-power battery-powered instrumentation, and consumer human-interface products. Designers also deploy the PIC18F47K42 in motor-control sub-systems and automotive body-comfort modules where its AEC-Q100 sister part (PIC18F47K42-E/ML) is qualified.

When designing with this device, plan pin assignments around the QFN exposed pad for thermal dissipation and route power and decoupling capacitors first. The Debug header pinout supports Microchip's Curiosity Nano (DM182028) and the MPLAB ICD 4 / PKOB in-circuit debuggers via 2-wire ICSP.

Aplicações típicas

PIC18F47K42T-I/ML é adequado para 6 aplicaçãos: Industrial IoT Sensor Nodes, Home Automation Hubs, Battery-Powered Instrumentation, Consumer Human-Interface Devices, Motor Control Sub-Systems, Automotive Body Comfort Modules (via AEC-Q100 variant).

🏭

Industrial IoT Sensor Nodes

The PIC18F47K42T-I/ML fits industrial IoT sensor nodes because of its deep-sleep current below 100 nA (typical with XLP Sleep and Idle modes) and 12-bit ADC2 with computation, enabling battery-powered temperature, pressure, or humidity sensors that transmit only on threshold events. With 128 KB Flash, it can host a full Modbus or MQTT-over-UART stack plus the CIPs that off-load debounce and timing tasks from the CPU. A typical node uses the internal 64 MHz HFINTOSC, the UART for RS-485, and Core Independent Peripherals to wake the CPU only on tamper events, extending coin-cell life into multi-year ranges.

🧩

Home Automation Hubs

With 128 KB Flash, 64 MHz CPU, and simultaneous UART/SPI/I2C ports, the PIC18F47K42T-I/ML can aggregate multiple wireless transceivers and sensor buses inside a smart-home gateway. The 44-QFN exposes enough GPIO to drive four status LEDs, a button matrix, and a touch keypad through configurable logic cells (CLC). Designers using this part for hubs benefit from Microchip's built-in 12-bit ADC computation for reading touch/proximity inputs and DMA moving data without CPU intervention, freeing the 16-MIPS core for HTTP-style command parsing.

💊

Battery-Powered Instrumentation

The PIC18F47K42T-I/ML's eXtreme Low-Power technology with Sleep currents under 50 nA and retained-RAM with wake-on-pulse makes it ideal for handheld DMMs, data loggers, and environmental recorders that operate for months on a single CR2032. Designers use the 12-bit ADC2 with computation to perform averaging and threshold detection in hardware, then store results in 8 KB SRAM with DMA bursts to internal Flash. The 44-QFN 8x8 package exposes an exposed pad that improves thermal dissipation during active measurement cycles, supporting continuous-conversion sampling without thermal derating.

📱

Consumer Human-Interface Devices

In appliances, remote controls, and HMI panels, the PIC18F47K42T-I/ML provides responsive touch sensing via the 12-bit ADC2 hardware averaging, capacitive touch libraries, and PWM-driven LED or buzzer feedback. With 128 KB Flash, the part can run Microchip's MCC Melody code generator to ship complete touch + display + connectivity stacks out of the box. The CIPs (CLC, NCO, CWG) generate precise PWM tones and IR carrier signals directly in hardware, so the CPU remains free to handle the user-interface loop, helping the device meet consumer-grade response latency targets.

🤖

Motor Control Sub-Systems

The PIC18F47K42T-I/ML drives small BLDC, brushed DC, or stepper actuators in printers, fans, and small pumps using its 10-bit and 16-bit PWM channels plus the Complementary Waveform Generator (CWG) with dead-band control. 64 MIPS CPU throughput is sufficient for closed-loop velocity and current PI loops at modest update rates, and the ADC2 with computation samples current shunts synchronised to the CWG trigger. The 2.3-5.5 V supply range works directly with 3.3 V logic gates, and the 44-QFN thermal pad protects the part under continuous switching up to 16 kHz PWM.

🚗

Automotive Body Comfort Modules (via AEC-Q100 variant)

While the PIC18F47K42T-I/ML itself is the industrial-grade part, the same die is shipped as PIC18F47K42-E/ML (AEC-Q100 qualified) on the identical 44-VQFN footprint, allowing designers to qualify one PCB layout and run two temperature grades. Use the E/ML variant for seat controllers, mirror adjusters, and lighting dimmers that must survive -40C to +125C and meet automotive EMC. The 128 KB Flash supports OEM-specific calibration tables, and the 12-bit ADC2 with 1 MSPS captures automotive sensor inputs with oversampling.

Notas de projeto

The PIC18F47K42T-I/ML integrates an internal voltage regulator selected by the CONFIG bits (BOREN, RETEN) and exposes the regulator decoupling pin (VCAP). Place a single low-ESR 1 uF ceramic capacitor (X7R, 10 V or higher rated) on VCAP as close as physically possible to the part, with trace length below 5 mm. For 5 V operation, ensure VDD has a 100 nF ceramic bypass in addition to the bulk 1 uF. Estimated: VCAP ripple must stay under 100 mV pk-pk to avoid code anomalies during Sleep/Idle transitions.

The 44-VQFN exposed thermal pad (EP) carries the die's ground and primary heat path. Solder the EP to a continuous copper pour (at least 200 square mm) on the top or bottom layer with at least four thermal vias (0.3 mm hole, 0.5 mm pad) stitched into the inner ground plane. Without EP soldering, theta_JA rises dramatically and the part may self-thermally limit at high CPU loads (64 MHz continuous). Estimated: at 64 MHz internal oscillator and 5 V VDD, the part draws about 12-15 mA in active mode, keeping T_j well below 85 C in industrial ambient if EP is properly soldered.

Route the MCLR/RESET and ICSP programming signals as a top-or-bottom-layer 2-wire daisy chain accessible at the ICSP header - Microchip's PKOB and ICD 4 probe use 0.05-inch spacing pads. Keep the 32.768 kHz Low Frequency Crystal (SOSC) traces short and away from high-frequency signals like PWM and SPI clocks. Place 100 nF bypass capacitors within 2 mm of every active VDD pin. Estimated: typical 4-layer board impedance control for USB-style downstream is unnecessary; the 64 MHz internal HFINTOSC operates without external traces.

After configuration word programming, lock PPS (Peripheral Pin Select) when shipping to production firmware so unauthorized I/O re-mapping is blocked. Watch out for DAC and ADC channel numbering: the same physical pin may be ADC channel 0 but DAC1 output, an easy source of conflicts. Finally, if you migrate from PIC18F46K22 to PIC18F47K42, double-check that the CWG startup time differs - the K42 has slightly different on-the-fly compensation that may require code-side calibration.
