PIC18F6627-I/PT Visão geral

The Microchip Technology PIC18F6627-I/PT is an 8-bit PIC18 family microcontroller (MCU) featuring 96 KB of Flash program memory, 3,936 bytes of RAM, and a 40 MHz maximum operating clock speed, housed in a 64-pin TQFP (10x10 mm) package with 54 digital I/O pins. It is built on an enhanced RISC architecture delivering 200 ns instruction execution and integrates a 10-bit analog-to-digital converter (A/D), multiple serial peripherals, and nanoWatt power-saving technology.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU core, program memory (Flash/ROM), working memory (RAM), and peripheral interfaces. The PIC18F family sits in Microchip's 8-bit portfolio between PIC16 mid-range parts and the 16-bit PIC24/dsPIC families, and is widely used in cost-sensitive embedded control. The 6627 variant specifically targets large memory, connectivity-rich applications with nanoWatt energy efficiency.

Key features include 96 KB (48K x 16) of enhanced Flash program memory, 1 KB of EEPROM data memory, 3,936 bytes of RAM, two synchronous serial ports (I2C and SPI capable), and two asynchronous (UART/LIN-capable) serial ports. The device supports a 4.2V to 5.5V supply range (industrial -I temperature grade, -40C to +85C) and includes four timer modules plus a 10-bit A/D converter with up to 12 input channels.

Architecturally, the PIC18F6627 uses an 8-bit data path with a 16-bit instruction word and a hardware multiplier, enabling C-compiler-friendly performance. The nanoWatt technology provides multiple power-managed modes (RUN, IDLE, SLEEP) with on-the-fly clock switching from a 32 kHz secondary oscillator, allowing average current draw in the microampere range for battery-powered nodes.

Typical applications include industrial control panels, automotive body/comfort modules (LIN nodes), USB-to-UART bridges when paired with external PHY, graphical LCD control, and sensor hubs with multiple serial slave devices. The 54 I/O pins and four serial ports make it well suited to systems that need to fan out to multiple peripherals simultaneously.

When designing with this part, budget Flash endurance to 100K erase/write cycles typical and plan ISP/ICSP programming access on the dedicated PGC/PGD pins. The 5V supply requirement (versus the 3.3V-only PIC18FxxJ-series) makes it ideal where 5V sensor/signal integrity is needed.

Aplicações típicas

PIC18F6627-I/PT é adequado para 6 aplicaçãos: Industrial Control Panel, Automotive LIN Bus Slave Node, USB-to-UART Bridge / RS-232 Gateway, Graphical LCD / OLED Display Controller, Sensor Hub with Multi-Serial Aggregation, Battery-Charging / Power Management Controller.

🏭

Industrial Control Panel

The PIC18F6627-I/PT fits industrial control panel HMIs and machine controllers thanks to its 54 I/O pins, two UART ports (RS-232/RS-485-capable), and 96 KB Flash for ladder-logic or state-machine codebases. Its 4.2 V to 5.5 V supply range aligns with 5 V industrial backplanes and 24 V bus systems after regulation. The 10-bit A/D handles analog sensor inputs (temperature, pressure, level) without external ADC, while 3,936 bytes RAM supports 8-16 KB C-compiled application code with display buffer. Two MSSP ports drive I2C-based character LCDs and SPI-driven graphic displays simultaneously, eliminating the need for an external display controller.

🚗

Automotive LIN Bus Slave Node

The PIC18F6627-I/PT is a strong fit for automotive LIN 1.3/2.0/2.1 slave nodes in body and comfort modules (window lifters, seat controllers, mirror adjusters, HVAC flaps). Both EUSART modules are LIN-capable with automatic baud-rate detection and 13-bit break-character generation, meeting the LIN spec without an external transceiver MCU. The 96 KB Flash holds application state machines plus LIN diagnostic libraries (UDS), while the 5 V supply range supports direct connection to 12 V automotive rails after regulation. Designers should pair this MCU with a TJA1027 LIN transceiver and ensure the -I temperature grade (-40 C to +85 C) covers the cabin environment.

🌐

USB-to-UART Bridge / RS-232 Gateway

The PIC18F6627-I/PT serves as the host side of legacy RS-232 gateways when paired with an external USB transceiver such as the MCP2200 or MCP2221. Its two UART ports allow simultaneous handling of two serial channels at 115200 baud with hardware flow control, while the 96 KB Flash stores USB-CDC stacks plus protocol translation firmware (Modbus RTU, DMX-512, NMEA-0183). The 54 I/O pins can drive status LEDs and GPIO handshakes without an external expander. Industrial designers appreciate the 5 V tolerance for direct connection to RS-232 transceivers like the MAX232 without level shifting.

📺

Graphical LCD / OLED Display Controller

The PIC18F6627-I/PT drives graphical ST7565, KS0108, or SSD1306 LCD/OLED displays via its two MSSP ports (one I2C for command, one SPI for pixel data). With 3,936 bytes RAM it can buffer a partial 128x64 monochrome frame, sufficient for menu UIs and waveform display. The 10-bit A/D reads backlight brightness and ambient light sensor inputs for automatic dimming. The 40 MHz clock keeps SPI pixel writes above 8 MHz, fast enough for flicker-free 60 Hz partial-frame updates. The 5 V I/O tolerance lets the MCU directly drive legacy 5 V character LCDs with parallel interface.

🧩

Sensor Hub with Multi-Serial Aggregation

The PIC18F6627-I/PT acts as a sensor hub aggregating I2C sensors (temperature, humidity, IMU), SPI sensors (pressure, accelerometer with high-speed SPI), and UART GPS modules into a single data stream. Two MSSP ports and two EUSARTs allow four simultaneous peripheral channels without bus contention. The 10-bit A/D adds backup analog channels for legacy 0-10 V or 4-20 mA sensors. 96 KB Flash holds sensor fusion algorithms plus data logging to an external EEPROM/SD card via SPI. nanoWatt technology keeps idle current below 1 uA for solar/battery-powered deployments in remote monitoring.

⚡

Battery-Charging / Power Management Controller

The PIC18F6627-I/PT implements smart battery chargers for 1S-4S Li-ion packs using PWM-driven MOSFET bridges and the 10-bit A/D to measure charge current and battery voltage. Two UART ports enable SMBus communication with smart battery hosts and fuel gauges like the BQ27441. nanoWatt technology keeps quiescent draw below the 100 uA self-discharge threshold when AC is unplugged. The 54 I/O pins allow direct connection to LED status indicators, NTC thermistor inputs, and protection circuit gate drives. Designers should pair this MCU with a dedicated charge controller IC for hardware-level safety redundancy.

The PIC18F6627-I/PT requires a stable 4.2 V to 5.5 V supply on VDD. Place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of each VDD pin (the device has multiple VDD pins at positions 34 and 58) and a bulk 10 uF tantalum at the regulator output. Power-on reset (POR) and brown-out reset (BOR) settings must be configured in the configuration words; default BOR is enabled at 4.2 V.

Estimated: the 64-pin TQFP package has a typical theta_JA of around 50 C/W on a 4-layer JEDEC test PCB. At maximum 40 MHz clock with all peripherals active, power dissipation is approximately 250 mW; junction temperature rise above ambient is therefore about 12 C. Industrial designs targeting 85 C ambient are well within the 125 C junction limit; no heatsink is required for normal operation.

For ICSP programming, dedicate the RB6/PGC and RB7/PGD pins in the PCB layout - never wire them to high-impedance-only loads. Place a 4.7 kohm pull-up on MCLR (pin 1) and route the ICSP connector near the MCU. AVSS (pin 14) and VSS (pins 33, 59) must be connected to a low-noise ground plane separated from noisy digital returns to keep A/D readings accurate.

Do not apply 5 V signals to the analog-capable pins when the A/D is enabled without verifying the absolute maximum ratings; the analog inputs on the PIC18F6627-I/PT are 5 V tolerant only when used as digital I/O, not as A/D inputs above VDD. Also, configuration bits must be set explicitly - leaving them blank will result in default oscillator settings that may not match the crystal you soldered.

The 54 I/O pins can source/sink 25 mA per pin (100 mA per port) per datasheet. For switching inductive loads, place flyback diodes directly at the load, not at the MCU pins. The MSSP modules share pins with the PSP port; if both peripherals are used simultaneously, mux the pins in firmware at boot to avoid contention on PORTD.
