PIC18LF26K80T-I/SS Visão geral

The Microchip Technology PIC18LF26K80T-I/SS is an ultra-low-power (XLP) 8-bit PIC microcontroller with integrated ECAN, 64 KB of Flash program memory, and a 12-bit ADC, housed in a 28-pin SSOP package. The device runs up to 64 MHz instruction clock delivering 16 MIPS, and operates from 1.8 V to 3.6 V across an industrial -40 °C to +85 °C temperature range.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer containing a CPU core, program memory (Flash/ROM), data memory (RAM), and on-chip peripherals such as ADC, timers, communication controllers, and I/O. Within Microchip's portfolio the PIC18F/LF K80 family sits in the 8-bit mainstream tier between PIC16 baseline parts and PIC24/dsPIC 16-bit parts, and is engineered for applications that demand low sleep current, wide operating voltage, and integrated CAN connectivity without paying for higher-end 32-bit silicon. The 'LF' prefix designates the low-voltage F-version, while the 'K80' indicates the family identifier, 'T' denotes tape-and-reel packaging, 'I' specifies the industrial temperature grade, and 'SS' indicates the 28-pin SSOP.

Key features include 64 KB Flash (32 K × 16), 3.6 KB RAM, 1 KB EEPROM, 11 channels of 12-bit ADC, an integrated ECAN module, 2 MSSP (I2C/SPI), 2 USART (LIN/IrDA), CTMU for capacitive touch sensing, eXtreme Low-Power nanoWatt XLP technology with sub-1 µA sleep current, and a charge time measurement unit. The device supports ICSP (In-Circuit Serial Programming) and ICD (In-Circuit Debugging) via a 2-wire interface.

Architecturally the PIC18LF26K80 uses an 8-bit modified Harvard RISC core with a hardware multiplier, 31-level stack, and separate Flash/EEPROM/RAM buses, allowing concurrent instruction fetch and data access. The integrated ECAN controller implements CAN 2.0B active with hardware acceptance filters and masking, offloading message filtering from the CPU. The 12-bit ADC includes a dedicated CTMU current source that enables capacitive touch detection by measuring charge time rather than relying on slower firmware loops.

Typical applications include automotive body and chassis ECAN nodes, CAN-based industrial sensor nodes, building automation controllers, low-power battery-powered sensor hubs, capacitive touch user interfaces, and LIN/CAN bridging nodes in vehicle networks. The combination of ECAN + 12-bit ADC + CTMU makes it especially attractive for distributed sensor networks that must sleep on batteries and wake on CAN traffic.

When designing with this MCU, ensure that the ECAN TX/RX pins map to the chosen CAN transceiver (e.g. MCP2551 or MCP2562), that the CTMU is calibrated against the internal bandgap reference for accurate touch readings, and that the 1.8 V to 3.6 V supply rail satisfies the low-voltage LF requirement - using a 5 V rail requires the PIC18F26K80 variant instead.

Aplicações típicas

PIC18LF26K80T-I/SS é adequado para 6 aplicaçãos: Automotive CAN Body Control Nodes, Industrial Sensor Nodes with ECAN, Battery-Powered Wireless Sensor Hubs, Capacitive Touch User Interfaces, Building Automation Controllers, LIN/CAN Bridging Nodes.

🚗

Automotive CAN Body Control Nodes

The PIC18LF26K80's integrated ECAN 2.0B module and 1.8-3.6 V supply make it well suited for 12 V automotive body control nodes that step down to 3.3 V via a switching pre-regulator. Its 64 KB Flash holds CANopen or J1939 protocol stacks plus application code, while the 12-bit ADC reads body sensors (temperature, humidity, light). The XLP nanoWatt sleep current below 1 µA preserves battery life during vehicle storage. Used alongside a CAN transceiver like the MCP2562, the 28-SSOP MCU forms a complete CAN node that drops onto a small PCB area, ideal for distributed body and chassis ECUs.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Nodes with ECAN

In factory automation, the PIC18LF26K80T-I/SS functions as the brain of ECAN-connected sensor nodes that report temperature, pressure, or position back to a PLC over a CAN bus. Its 12-bit ADC with 11 channels handles multiple analog sensors simultaneously, and the CTMU enables capacitive-touch operator panels without external touch ICs. The wide -40 °C to +85 °C industrial temperature range and 64 KB Flash accommodate protocol stacks like CANopen DS301 plus application firmware. Pairs naturally with a robust isolated CAN transceiver for factory floor noise immunity.

🔋

Battery-Powered Wireless Sensor Hubs

The XLP nanoWatt technology gives the PIC18LF26K80T-I/SS sub-1 µA sleep current, allowing battery-powered sensor hubs to sleep for years on a single CR2032 coin cell while periodically sampling sensors and broadcasting via CAN. The 1.8-3.6 V supply range aligns directly with alkaline or lithium battery chemistries without a boost converter. The CTMU enables low-cost capacitive wake-up touch buttons that draw essentially zero current when idle. This makes the part attractive for HVAC wireless nodes and remote environmental loggers.

🧩

Capacitive Touch User Interfaces

The on-chip CTMU (Charge Time Measurement Unit) is a constant-current source that the ADC uses to measure capacitance change on a touch pad, enabling capacitive buttons, sliders, and proximity sensing without an external touch controller IC. Combined with the 12-bit ADC and 64 KB Flash, the PIC18LF26K80T-I/SS can implement a full capacitive-touch UI plus application firmware in a single 28-SSOP chip. The XLP sleep current below 1 µA means battery-powered touch interfaces can last years on coin cells.

🏢

Building Automation Controllers

HVAC, lighting, and access control panels benefit from the PIC18LF26K80T-I/SS's mix of ECAN for backbone communication, dual EUSART for RS-485 Modbus, dual MSSP for SPI sensor and I²C EEPROM links, and 12-bit ADC for analog sensors like thermistors and photocells. The 64 KB Flash accommodates BACnet or Modbus protocol stacks, and the 28-SSOP package simplifies routing on long rectangular PCBs typical of HVAC controllers. The wide operating temperature range supports unconditioned plant-room environments.

🌐

LIN/CAN Bridging Nodes

When a sub-network uses LIN (Local Interconnect Network) but must gateway into a CAN bus, the PIC18LF26K80T-I/SS handles both protocols via its dual EUSART (LIN-capable) and integrated ECAN, eliminating the need for two MCUs. Its 64 KB Flash holds the gateway translation table, and the 16 MIPS CPU is sufficient to manage both protocol timers. The 28-SSOP compact package suits the small PCBs typical of seat-control modules and door-panel nodes in automotive and industrial cab applications.

Principais diferenciais

  • Integrated ECAN 2.0B module without external CAN controller (vs PIC18LF25K22T-I/SS)
  • On-chip CTMU for capacitive-touch sensing (vs PIC18LF25K80T-I/SS)
  • Low-voltage LF variant supports 1.8 V operation (vs PIC18F26K80T-I/SS)

Notas de projeto

The LF variant's 1.8 V to 3.6 V supply range must not be exceeded. Estimated: at 64 MHz and 3.3 V VDD, typical IDD is approximately 15 mA; derate to under 1 µA in Sleep with RTCC and CTMU disabled. Place a 100 nF decoupling cap within 5 mm of the VDD pin, plus a 10 µF bulk cap on the PCB power rail. For battery applications, gate the regulator (e.g. MCP1700) with a P-MOSFET to achieve true 0 µA quiescent state.

Route the ECAN TX/RX differential pair (RC6/RC7) with 100 Ω characteristic impedance and keep ground plane underneath unbroken. Place the CAN transceiver (MCP2562) within 10 mm of the MCU CAN pins. Keep the ICSP pins (RB6/PGC, RB7/PGD) accessible - do not place them under large heatsinks or shielded enclosures that block the programming clip.

Do not substitute the PIC18F26K80 (5 V part) onto a board designed for PIC18LF26K80 (3.6 V max) - this will damage the part if the 5 V rail is energized. The 'T' suffix in the part number means tape-and-reel packaging with a 2100-piece minimum reel; for prototypes use the non-'T' tray variant. The CTMU requires periodic calibration against the internal bandgap reference - skip this step and capacitive touch readings drift noticeably with temperature.

For ECAN networks longer than 1 m, add a 120 Ω termination resistor at each bus end - not in the middle. The MCU's internal CAN TX output slew rate is configurable via the BRP/Phase1/Phase2 registers; lower slew rates reduce EMI at the cost of bit rate. Use twisted-pair cable and keep stub branches under 0.3 m to avoid reflection ringing on the bus.
