PIC18LF4458T-I/ML Visão geral

The Microchip Technology PIC18LF4458T-I/ML is an 8-bit PIC18F microcontroller featuring a 48 MHz (12 MIPS) enhanced Harvard core, 24 KB (12K x 16) of self-programmable Flash program memory, and 2 KB of SRAM, packaged in a 44-pin QFN (8x8 mm) with exposed thermal pad. The 'LF' prefix denotes the 2.0V-5.5V wide VDD range, while the 'T' suffix indicates Tape & Reel packaging and 'I' marks the industrial -40C to +85C operating temperature grade.

A PIC18 microcontroller is an 8-bit reduced-instruction-set computing (RISC) engine using a modified Harvard architecture with separate program and data buses; the PIC18 family specifically adds 16-bit instructions, hardware multiply, and a C-optimized instruction set that bridges legacy 8-bit code with modern C compilers. Within Microchip's hierarchy, PIC18 sits between baseline PIC10/12/16 and the 16-bit dsPIC/PIC24 families, targeting mid-range embedded USB, sensing, and human-interface applications where deterministic real-time response and low cost matter more than raw MIPS.

Key features of the PIC18LF4458T-I/ML include a full-speed USB 2.0 FS transceiver with on-chip 3.3V regulator and 1.5 kB of endpoint RAM; a 12-channel 10-bit ADC with auto-acquisition; two USARTs, one SPI, and one I2C (Master/Slave); a 16-bit timer/counter plus two 8-bit timers; a 9-channel 10-bit PWM module; nanoWatt power management with multiple idle/sleep modes; and 34 digital I/O pins tolerant of 5V logic on a VDD-Domain digital supply.

Architecturally, the device integrates an internal 8 MHz oscillator with a 4x PLL (yielding the 48 MHz FOSC) and supports crystal, resonator, and external clock sources. The 24 KB Flash is partitioned for a 32 KB bootloader-compatible region, while the 2 KB SRAM supports USB endpoint buffer allocation. The exposed pad (EP) of the QFN-44 must be soldered to a sufficient ground copper pour to meet the 31 C/W theta-JC thermal envelope; otherwise the silicon will fold back oscillator activity when junction temperature exceeds 150C.

Typical applications include USB Human Interface Devices (HID keyboards, mice, game controllers), CDC virtual COM ports, low-speed instrumentation bridges, industrial sensor nodes with USB firmware update, and legacy serial-port-to-USB migration designs. Industrial-grade temperature and wide VDD also suit process-control front ends and battery-backed accessories.

Design tip: route the USB D+/D- pair as a 90-ohm differential, place the VBUS-sense resistor within 5 mm of the VBUS pin, and tie the exposed pad to a continuous GND pour. For EMI-sensitive links, the internal 3.3V USB regulator should be bypassed with 1 uF X7R plus 100 nF at the pin.

Aplicações típicas

PIC18LF4458T-I/ML é adequado para 6 aplicaçãos: USB HID Peripherals (Keyboard, Mouse, Game Controller), USB CDC Virtual COM Port Bridge, Industrial Sensor Node with USB Diagnostics, Battery-Powered USB Charging Cable Identity Dongle, USB Bootloader / Field Firmware Update Target, Legacy RS-232 to USB Migration Adapter.

🧩

USB HID Peripherals (Keyboard, Mouse, Game Controller)

The PIC18LF4458T-I/ML is purpose-built for USB Human Interface Devices because it integrates a full-speed USB 2.0 transceiver, 1.5 KB endpoint RAM, and an internal 3.3V LDO that draws power directly from VBUS - eliminating the need for an external PHY or regulator. Its 48 MHz core delivers 12 MIPS, enough to scan matrix keybeds at >1 kHz while still serving the USB 1 ms polling interval. The 2.0V-5.5V VDD lets the same board power from a 2-cell Li-ion pack or USB 5V rail. Place a 90-ohm D+/D- differential pair, a 1.5 kohm pull-up on D+, and tie the exposed pad to GND; the bootloader HID descriptor can reflash the 24 KB Flash over USB without an external programmer.

🌐

USB CDC Virtual COM Port Bridge

The PIC18LF4458T-I/ML is widely used in USB-to-UART bridge designs replacing legacy RS-232 adapters. Its integrated USB FS transceiver plus a CDC class-compliant firmware stack (Microchip MLA) lets the device enumerate as a virtual COM port on Windows, macOS, and Linux without driver installation. The 48 MHz core drives CDC at 921600 baud with negligible CPU load, while the 2 KB SRAM buffers USB OUT packets without overflow. Place a 1 uF X7R bypass on VUSB3V3 and route D+/D- as a 90-ohm differential; this is sufficient to replace FTDI-style bridges at lower cost while keeping a single-IC BOM. Suitable for industrial sensor readout, debug consoles, and firmware update channels.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Node with USB Diagnostics

The PIC18LF4458T-I/ML fits industrial sensor-front-end designs that need both 5V analog sensor excitation and a USB maintenance port. The 2.0V-5.5V VDD range lets a 24V-to-5V LDO (e.g., LM7805) power the MCU directly while the on-chip ADC reads process variables. The 34 I/O pins support SPI/I2C sensor clusters, and the USB port enables field technicians to attach a laptop for live diagnostics and firmware updates. Industrial -40C to +85C rating suits factory floor operation. The exposed pad must be soldered to a continuous GND pour for thermal dissipation; failed pads are the #1 cause of field returns on QFN packages.

📱

Battery-Powered USB Charging Cable Identity Dongle

The PIC18LF4458T-I/ML's nanoWatt idle modes and 2.0V minimum VDD make it suitable for USB cable identity dongles that announce negotiated current to phones. Drawing <1 uA in sleep, the device wakes on VBUS attach, enumerates as a HID or vendor device, and reports cable ratings to the charging host. The 24 KB Flash stores firmware and cable-descriptor look-up tables, while 2 KB SRAM holds USB endpoint buffers. Place the device directly across the USB D+/D- lines with 15 kohm pulldowns, use a 47 nF VBUS decoupling cap, and ensure the exposed pad grounds to dissipate any hot-plug inrush.

💡

USB Bootloader / Field Firmware Update Target

The PIC18LF4458T-I/ML includes a self-programmable Flash region that Microchip's USB bootloader (HID-class) can target for in-field firmware updates. A 32 KB bootloader region fits entirely inside the 24 KB Flash budget of the 4458 when paired with a smaller application, or the higher-Flash 4450/4550 variants can host both the bootloader and a larger app. This eliminates the need for ICSP headers on production PCBs. Route D+/D- with 90-ohm differential, add ESD protection diodes to VBUS, and use Microchip's HID Bootloader PC host tool to push HEX files. Power comes directly from USB VBUS - no external LDO needed.

🔧

Legacy RS-232 to USB Migration Adapter

The PIC18LF4458T-I/ML is used to migrate legacy RS-232 designs to USB by replacing the DE-9 connector and line driver with a USB CDC bridge on the same PCB. The 48 MHz core bit-bangs RS-232 at up to 115200 baud while managing the USB endpoint; an external MAX3232 converts to +/-6V logic if true RS-232 levels are required for legacy peripherals. The 2 KB SRAM buffers CDC transfers at line rate, and the exposed-pad QFN-44 keeps the BOM compact for dongle-style adapters. Suitable for industrial PLC programming cables, label printers, and POS terminals.

Notas de projeto

The 44-QFN (8x8 mm) exposed pad (EP) MUST be soldered to a continuous GND copper pour spanning at least 2 square inches of board copper. Per the Microchip PIC18F4458 family datasheet, a floating or undersized EP increases junction-to-ambient thermal resistance above the 31 C/W budget and causes oscillator fold-back or erratic reset behavior. Place 25-30 thermal vias (0.3 mm drill, 0.6 mm pitch) inside the EP region stitched to the bottom-layer GND plane for optimal heat extraction.

Route the USB D+ and D- pair as a 90-ohm differential (each trace 0.20 mm wide on 0.20 mm spacing for 1.6 mm FR-4), matching length to within 2 mm, and shield with a continuous GND pour on both sides with stitched vias. Place the ESD protection diodes within 5 mm of the USB connector. The 1.5 kohm pull-up on D+ selects full-speed USB; place this resistor as close to the D+ pin as possible to avoid impedance discontinuities. Source: Microchip PIC18F4458 family datasheet, USB section.

The internal USB 3.3V regulator (VUSB3V3 pin) must be bypassed with a 1 uF X7R ceramic plus a 100 nF NP0/C0G in parallel, placed within 3 mm of the pin. This internal regulator sources current from VBUS and powers the USB transceiver; if VBUS is absent (self-powered designs) the regulator is disabled and the device falls back to VDD for the USB PHY. Never short VUSB3V3 to VDD - the regulator is for USB PHY only.

Configuration word programming: the CONFIG1L register's PLLDIV bits must be set to divide-by-5 (96 MHz -> 48 MHz USB clock) for correct USB operation with the 20 MHz crystal mode - misprogramming the PLL configuration yields a 24 MHz USB clock and enumerates as low-speed USB, not full-speed. Also note: the 'F' vs 'LF' VDD range selection must match VDD - applying 5V to a PIC18F4458 (which expects 4.2V-5.5V max) is fine, but a 3.3V supply to PIC18F4458 fails start-up.
