PIC24FJ32GA104 Visão geral

The Microchip PIC24FJ32GA104 is a 16-bit low-power microcontroller from the PIC24F family featuring 32 KB of Flash program memory, 8 KB of RAM, and a 32 MHz maximum CPU clock delivering up to 16 MIPS performance. The device is housed in a 44-pin TQFP package (10x10 mm) and is targeted at general-purpose embedded applications requiring strong peripheral integration with low power consumption. According to the Microchip datasheet, the part includes 16-bit x 16-bit hardware multiply and 32-bit / 16-bit hardware divide engines in a single cycle, plus a C-compiler-optimized instruction set that simplifies code generation.

A microcontroller is a self-contained computing subsystem that integrates a CPU, non-volatile program memory, working RAM, and a rich mix of peripherals (timers, communication ports, ADCs, comparators, I/O) into a single IC. The PIC24FJ family sits within the broader hierarchy of microcontrollers -> 16-bit microcontrollers -> low-power microcontrollers -> nanoWatt XLP devices, manufactured using CMOS process technology. It belongs to the wider Microchip 8/16/32-bit MCU ecosystem (PIC, PIC24, dsPIC, PIC32) and ultimately falls under embedded processing -> semiconductors. The ultra-low-power nanoWatt XLP technology extends battery life by offering multiple sleep modes, deep sleep currents in the microamp range, and peripheral modules that operate independently of the CPU.

Key specifications include 32 KB Flash (11K x 24 words), 8 KB RAM, hardware single-cycle multiply and divide, an internal 8 MHz oscillator with PLL support, up to 16 MIPS throughput, and a peripheral lineup that typically includes multiple UART/SPI/I2C modules, 10-bit ADC, comparators, RTCC, and a charge time measurement unit (CTMU). Five 16-bit timers/counters and a wide operating voltage range of 2.0 V to 3.6 V with -40C to +85C industrial temperature range round out the feature set.

The architecture is a modified Harvard design with separate program and data paths, predictable interrupt response, and a fast context switch designed for deterministic real-time control. On-chip debugging via two hardware breakpoints and an ICD interface reduces development cost, while the integrated peripherals remove the need for many external components.

Typical applications include portable medical devices, sensor hubs, industrial control nodes, low-cost HMI panels, and battery-powered IoT edge nodes. The combination of nanoWatt XLP power savings, deterministic 16-bit performance, and standard 44-TQFP footprint makes it well suited to designs migrating from older 8-bit PIC microcontrollers that have outgrown their memory and peripheral budgets.

When designing with this part, ensure all VDD/VSS pairs are connected (a floating rail can prevent programming via ICSP), place the 0.1 uF decoupling capacitor within a few millimeters of each VDD pin, and reserve a 4.7 kohm pull-up on MCLR for reliable reset behavior. RTCC operation with a 32.768 kHz crystal requires selecting the appropriate secondary oscillator configuration in the configuration bits.

Aplicações típicas

PIC24FJ32GA104 é adequado para 6 aplicaçãos: Portable Medical Devices, Industrial Sensor Hubs, Low-Cost HMI Panels, Battery-Powered IoT Edge Nodes, Automotive Interior Comfort Modules, Educational / Hobbyist Development Boards.

💊

Portable Medical Devices

The PIC24FJ32GA104 fits portable medical devices because its nanoWatt XLP deep-sleep currents stay in the low microamp range, allowing weeks of battery life between charges for handheld meters and pulse-oximeter-style designs. Its 16-bit CPU at up to 16 MIPS handles sensor linearization and FIR-style filtering in real time without burdening the main loop, and the 5V-tolerant digital I/O simplifies direct connection to legacy 5V analog front-ends while keeping the MCU itself on a clean 3.3V rail. On a typical board the device sits between the Li-ion cell and the analog signal chain, waking on RTCC interrupts to take readings, then returning to sleep. This delivers a clear BOM cost and PCB area advantage over 32-bit parts for cost-sensitive medical peripherals.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Hubs

For industrial sensor hubs (4-20 mA bridges, Modbus nodes, machine status boards), the PIC24FJ32GA104 brings 32 KB of Flash and 8 KB of RAM, which fit typical Modbus/HART-stack plus sensor-calibration libraries without external memory. Hardware 16x16 multiply and 32/16 divide accelerate engineering-unit conversions inside tight 10 ms scan loops, and the 44-pin TQFP gives enough I/O for several UART/SPI/I2C devices, opto-isolated inputs, and relay drivers. The MCU operates across 2.0-3.6V with -40C to +85C industrial range, suiting unheated outdoor enclosures. The on-chip 10-bit ADC and 5V-tolerant digital pins reduce external signal-conditioning parts.

🧩

Low-Cost HMI Panels

Low-cost HMI panels (small TFT status displays, keypad-driven appliance controllers) benefit from the PIC24FJ32GA104's 16-bit throughput to drive graphics primitives, scan keypads, and run capacitive-touch CTMU handling in parallel. Its 32 KB Flash supports modest icon libraries and language strings without external SPI Flash, and the 8 KB RAM fits small frame buffers for monochrome graphic LCDs or character OLEDs. The 44-TQFP footprint yields manageable PCB area for handheld controllers, and 5V-tolerant I/O allows direct matrix-keypad wiring without level shifters. Compared with a Cortex-M0+ at similar price, the PIC24FJ provides deterministic interrupt latency critical for keypad debounce and rotary encoder tracking.

🔧

Battery-Powered IoT Edge Nodes

The PIC24FJ32GA104 is well matched to battery-powered IoT edge nodes running on coin cells or 2xAA cells because nanoWatt XLP technology keeps deep-sleep current in the microamp range, while RTCC with a 32.768 kHz crystal supports scheduled wake-and-transmit behavior. Its 2.0-3.6V supply range covers direct Li-ion and 2xAA topologies, eliminating boost regulators for short-range sub-GHz or BLE companion designs. The 16 MIPS CPU handles on-node preprocessing of accelerometer, temperature, or air-quality data before transmission, reducing radio on-time and overall system energy. Hardware multiply/divide accelerate FFT and RMS calculations for vibration and acoustic-monitoring nodes.

🚗

Automotive Interior Comfort Modules

While not AEC-Q100 qualified itself, the PIC24FJ32GA104 is widely used in non-safety automotive interior comfort modules such as seat-heater controllers, ambient lighting drivers, and HVAC blend-door actuators, where its -40C to +85C rating plus robust EEPROM emulation in Flash support real-world cabin temperatures. Hardware 16-bit math simplifies PWM-driven motor control loops, and the 44-TQFP package fits the dense PCB areas behind dashboards. The nanoWatt XLP modes extend key-fob-style parasitic drain targets when modules are quiescent for days. Designers migrating to AEC-Q100 should evaluate the PIC24FJ family parts with a -E extended-grade suffix instead.

🎥

Educational / Hobbyist Development Boards

The PIC24FJ32GA104 powers entry-level 16-bit development platforms (Explorer 16/32 with PIM, low-cost Curiosity boards) because the on-chip 2-breakpoint ICD debugger removes the need for an external programmer for most users. Its 44-TQFP package is large enough to be hand-solderable on prototype boards yet compact for breadboard adapters, and the NanoWatt XLP demo code trains users in real-world low-power firmware patterns. The Microchip MPLAB X ecosystem (XC16 compiler, MCC code configurator) is fully supported. For curricula stepping up from PIC16 to PIC24, this part is the canonical 16-bit teaching target.

Notas de projeto

Decouple every VDD pin with its own 0.1 uF X7R ceramic capacitor placed within 3 mm of the pin, and add a 10 uF bulk tantalum or ceramic capacitor near the package. The PIC24FJ32GA104 has multiple VDD/VSS pairs (pins 14, 22, 40 and 13, 21, 39) and floating any pair risks noisy ADC readings and intermittent ICSP programming failures. Verify decoupling with an oscilloscope probe on a VDD pin during full-load operation, and confirm the analog supply AVdd tracks VDD within 50 mV if you separate them.

Connect MCLR (pin 43) to VDD through a 4.7 kohm pull-up resistor and provide a push-button to ground for manual reset. Floating MCLR is the most common reason for in-circuit serial programming (ICSP) failures on production units; a 1 kohm series resistor and 100 pF capacitor on the MCLR line provides additional ESD protection without affecting programming. Always keep ICSP pins PGC1/PGD1 free of large capacitive loads (>50 pF) so the debugger can drive them reliably.

The 44-TQFP package dissipates most heat through PCB copper pours rather than the package itself. Connect thermal pads on inner layers to a continuous GND pour with at least 0.5 sq. in. of copper to keep the junction rise below 20 C in typical 32 MHz operation. For industrial environments above +60 C ambient, add thermal vias under the exposed paddle to a 4-layer inner ground plane. The PIC24FJ is rated to +85 C industrial, so thermal management is most relevant when the device continuously drives high-current I/O (LED drivers, relay coils) for extended periods.

Route ICSP signals PGC1/PGD1/PGD2/MCLR on the top layer with a dedicated ground return path; keep them clear of switching converter PWMs and high-current motor drive traces by at least 3 trace widths. Analog inputs (AN0-AN15) should be guarded with ground traces and routed away from digital switching signals to preserve 10-bit ADC accuracy. Use the CTMU for capacitive touch and route sense lines as parallel pairs with a driven shield to avoid humidity-induced drift.

Place the 32.768 kHz RTCC crystal within 7 mm of pins OSC1/OSC2 (pins 15/16) and surround it with a continuous ground pour; add 5-15 pF loading capacitors per the crystal manufacturer datasheet. Keep PWM-driven outputs and PWM-sensitive analog inputs on opposite sides of the MCU to reduce crosstalk. When using parallel master port (PMP) signals for an external data bus, group PMD/PMALL/PMALH pins together and add series damping resistors if the bus runs longer than 50 mm.
