PIC24FJ64GA306-I/PT Visão geral

The Microchip Technology PIC24FJ64GA306-I/PT is a 16-bit PIC24F microcontroller with nanoWatt XLP technology, delivering 32 MHz / 16 MIPS performance from 64 KB of Flash and 8 KB of RAM in a 64-pin TQFP (PT) package measuring 10x10 mm. The device is part of the 64/80/100-pin general-purpose PIC24F family with integrated LCD controller and ultra-low-power features including a Low-Voltage Sleep mode that maintains state and RAM at a typical current of 340 nA.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU core, non-volatile program memory, working RAM, and a rich set of peripherals such as timers, communication interfaces, and analog blocks. Within the broader taxonomy, the PIC24FJ64GA306 sits in the 16-bit MCU category - between 8-bit PIC16/PIC18 parts and 32-bit PIC32 parts - and within Microchip's hierarchy it belongs to the PIC24F XLP family of low-power microcontrollers. This positioning gives designers a balance of deterministic 16-bit performance and battery-friendly sleep current.

Key features include 64 KB Flash organized as 22K x 24 words, 8 KB RAM, up to 53 general-purpose I/O pins, six DMA channels for offloading the CPU, and up to 16 channels of 12-bit A/D conversion with 10-bit A/D option. Connectivity peripherals cover I2C, SPI, UART/USART, IrDA and LIN, while dedicated peripherals include Brown-out Detect/Reset, POR, PWM, WDT, LCD controller, and RTCC with VBAT backup. The 32 MHz oscillator drives the 16 MIPS pipeline; operation spans 2.0 V to 3.6 V across the -40C to +85C industrial temperature range.

Architecturally, the device uses a modified Harvard core with separate program and data paths, allowing concurrent fetch and access. XLP technology combines multiple power management modes (Sleep, Deep Sleep, Low-Voltage Sleep with RTCC) and a fast wake-up from 1.6 us to deliver nano-amp sleep currents with active-mode run currents in the mA range, enabling years of battery life on coin cells or two-AA packs.

Typical applications include industrial HMI panels with segment-LCD displays, medical monitoring devices, energy metering, battery-powered sensor nodes, home appliances with LCD user interfaces, and automotive body/comfort modules. The integrated LCD controller removes the need for an external driver for segment displays up to a few hundred segments.

Designers should note that the 'I' suffix denotes the industrial -40C to +85C temperature grade and the 'PT' suffix denotes the 64-pin TQFP package. When migrating within the PIC24FJ64GA3xx family, pinout is shared across -64-, -80- and -100-pin variants of the same die, enabling easy PCB re-spins with the same firmware.

PIC24FJ64GA306-I/PT é adequado para 6 aplicaçãos: Industrial HMI Panels with Segment LCD, Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Nodes, Medical Monitoring Devices, Energy / Smart Metering, Home Appliance User Interfaces, Automotive Body and Comfort Modules.

🏭

Industrial HMI Panels with Segment LCD

The PIC24FJ64GA306-I/PT is a strong fit for industrial HMI panels that drive segment-LCD character or icon displays, because it integrates a hardware LCD controller that can typically drive up to a few hundred segments without an external driver IC. Its 32 MHz / 16 MIPS core easily handles menu navigation, keypad scanning, and Modbus-style protocols, while the 64 KB Flash / 8 KB RAM comfortably fits GUI state machines and language tables. XLP Sleep at 340 nA keeps the panel responsive to a button press without draining backup batteries when the operator is away.

🧩

Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Nodes

For IoT sensor nodes running on coin cells or two-AA batteries, the PIC24FJ64GA306-I/PT offers an unusually low Low-Voltage Sleep current of roughly 340 nA with full RAM and RTCC retention, combined with a 1.6 us wake-up time that keeps active-mode energy negligible. The 12-bit ADC with up to 16 channels directly digitizes sensor outputs without an external analog front end, and the I2C/SPI/UART peripherals talk to most modern sensors. With duty cycling, multi-year battery life is realistic for periodic temperature, humidity, or air-quality reporting.

💊

Medical Monitoring Devices

The PIC24FJ64GA306-I/PT is well suited to portable medical monitoring devices such as pulse oximeters, glucose meters, and patient thermometers, where the XLP Sleep profile preserves battery life between measurements and the 16 MIPS core runs the filtering and display updates in real time. The 12-bit ADC with adequate channel count captures sensor signals without an extra front-end converter, and the integrated LCD controller drives a numeric or icon display directly. Its industrial -40C to +85C temperature grade supports both refrigerated and body-temperature operating ranges.

⚡

Energy / Smart Metering

Energy metering designs benefit from the PIC24FJ64GA306-I/PT's combination of a 32 MHz compute core for real-time power calculations, up to 16 ADC channels for voltage and current sensing, and the integrated segment-LCD controller that drives kWh and status displays without an external driver. Notas de projeto

Place a 0.1 uF decoupling capacitor as close as possible to every VDD/VSS pair on the PIC24FJ64GA306-I/PT, with a bulk 1 uF or 10 uF tantalum/ceramic at the board's main supply input. The MCU has three VDD pins (18, 38, 60) and three VSS pins (17, 37, 61) on the 64-pin TQFP - bypassing each pair separately prevents digital switching noise from coupling into the analog reference and degrading ADC readings.

Route the RTCC crystal (typically 32.768 kHz) traces symmetrically and guard them with a ground pour; keep them short and far from switching regulators or display lines. The SOSCO/SOSCI pins on this device (mapped from the OSC1/OSC2 pins) drive the secondary oscillator that backs the real-time clock - poor layout directly increases RTCC timekeeping error. Adding a series resistor on the crystal can be useful to tame gain issues at low supply voltages.

Do not leave the MCLR pin floating on the PIC24FJ64GA306-I/PT - it is active-low and an unbypassed MCLR will reset the device randomly under noise. Tie MCLR to VDD through a 10 kohm resistor with a 100 nF capacitor to VDD for proper noise filtering. Also configure the unused I/O pins as digital outputs tied low (or as inputs with internal weak pull-ups) to minimize current draw in Sleep mode.

When using the on-chip segment LCD controller, route the LCD segment and common signals as a dedicated bus and avoid running switching signals (PWM, SPI clock) parallel to and close to those traces for long distances. AC coupling from PWM edges into LCD segments can show up as ghosting on the display. Keep the LCD bias-generation capacitors close to the VLCAP pins per the datasheet recommended layout.
