PIC32MZ0512EFK144T-I/JWX Visão geral

The Microchip Technology PIC32MZ0512EFK144T-I/JWX is a high-performance 32-bit MIPS microAptiv M-Class microcontroller operating at 200 MHz with 512 KB of Flash program memory and 128 KB of SRAM, housed in a 144-lead TFBGA (7x7) package with industrial temperature grade -40C to +85C. It is part of the PIC32MZ EF family targeted at connectivity, industrial, IoT, graphics HMI and motor control segments, and integrates a Floating Point Unit, crypto engine, and CAN interface on-chip.

A 32-bit microcontroller (MCU) is an integrated microprocessor core, memory and peripherals on a single die; the PIC32MZ EF family is built on the MIPS microAptiv core with 5-stage pipeline, instruction and data caches, tightly-coupled deterministic memory and DSP extensions, placing it in the broader hierarchy of microcontroller -> embedded MCU -> 32-bit MCU -> connectivity MCU -> semiconductor. The PIC32MZ0512EFK144T variant targets connectivity-rich designs where high performance and deterministic real-time response are required.

Key features include a 200 MHz maximum CPU clock, 512 KB Flash (512K x 8) with prefetch cache, 128 KB SRAM, integrated FPU for single and double-precision IEEE 754 operations, hardware crypto engine, dedicated CAN module, integrated 12-bit ADC up to 48 MSPS, multiple UART/SPI/I2C peripherals, USB 2.0 High Speed with on-chip PHY, 10/100 Ethernet MAC, EBI (External Bus Interface) for SRAM/PSRAM memories, and an integrated LCD controller up to 1024x768 resolution. The 144-TFBGA package is 7 mm x 7 mm with 0.5 mm ball pitch.

The architecture combines the MIPS32 microAptiv core running at 200 MHz (252 MHz with family variants), Microchip's Harmony and MPLAB XC32 toolchains, and a peripheral set optimized for graphics HMI, audio, industrial Ethernet and motor control. The crypto engine accelerates AES, DES, 3DES, SHA and MD5, reducing firmware overhead in connected applications.

Typical applications include industrial HMI with TFT LCD displays, factory automation controllers, IoT gateways with Ethernet, motor control for industrial drives, medical patient monitoring devices and automotive HMI. The wide connectivity mix (HS USB + Ethernet + CAN + multiple SPI/I2C/UART) suits designs that previously required a separate communications controller.

When designing with this device, allocate sufficient PCB area under the TFBGA for via-in-pad escape routing; the 0.5 mm pitch requires 4-layer or higher stack-ups with microvia technology. Decoupling per datasheet: 0.1 uF + 10 uF bulk within 5 mm of each power pin pair.

Notas de projeto

The 144-TFBGA package uses 0.5 mm ball pitch on a 7 mm x 7 mm substrate, requiring via-in-pad microvia escape for fanout routing. Use a 4-layer or higher PCB stack-up with 0.5 oz copper on outer layers. Place 0.1 uF + 10 uF decoupling pairs within 5 mm of each VDD/VSS pin pair. The TFBGA thermal pad (center ball grid) must be soldered to a continuous ground pour with multiple thermal vias for heat dissipation at 200 MHz operation.

Total current draw at 200 MHz with all peripherals active is approximately 100-130 mA. Place a 4.7 uF bulk capacitor near the main VDD pin and 0.1 uF ceramics on each VDD cluster. The internal LDO requires a 10 uF output capacitor on the VDDCORE pin; do not omit. Power-on sequence is automatic but VBAT for RTC should be connected to backup battery before VDD ramps to ensure RTC initialization.

Separate analog and digital ground planes with a single-point stitch under the AVDD pin. Route USB 90 ohm differential pairs (D+/D-) with controlled impedance of 90 ohms differential and 45 ohms single-ended. The 50 MHz RMII reference clock trace to the Ethernet PHY should be kept under 25 mm with ground shielding on both sides to minimize EMI.

Do not enable the FPU before calling Harmony framework initialization; the CP0 Status register bits must be configured first. The PPS (Peripheral Pin Select) lock sequence must be completed before I/O assignment is committed, or peripheral functions will not map correctly. Avoid enabling unused peripherals in the device configuration bits; each unused clock domain consumes 1-2 mA of quiescent current.

The HS USB PHY requires 45 ohm single-ended impedance on D+/D- traces with 90 ohm differential. Maximum trace length is 50 mm with no stubs. Place the USB ESD protection diode within 5 mm of the connector. For Ethernet RMII, the 50 MHz REFCLK must have matched trace length to RXD0/1, CRS_DV and TX_EN within 5 mm to meet timing at 100 Mbps.
