LT1461CIS8-5 Обзор
A series voltage reference is a three-terminal device that maintains a stable, temperature-independent output voltage independent of supply, load, and temperature variations. It sits at the bottom of the power management hierarchy, below linear regulators and DC-DC converters, and serves as the precision voltage anchor for ADCs, DACs, and precision data-acquisition systems. Voltage references are characterized by initial accuracy (error at 25 °C), temperature coefficient (drift in ppm/°C), long-term stability, noise density, and load/line regulation.
Key specifications of the LT1461CIS8-5 include ±0.08% initial output accuracy (max), a low dropout of approximately 0.45 V at 100 mA load, 35 µA quiescent current, and high output drive capable of sourcing 100 mA continuously. Curvature-compensated bandgap architecture and trimmed thin-film resistors achieve the headline accuracy without external calibration, while the wide input supply range supports single-cell Li-Ion to industrial 24 V bus operation with adequate headroom.
The LT1461 uses advanced curvature-compensated bandgap architecture with precision-trimmed thin-film resistors. This topology eliminates the typical parabolic temperature error of uncompensated bandgap references, resulting in low drift over the full industrial temperature range. The high output drive and low supply current are unusual to find together, and the device's tight line/load regulation keep the 5V reference stable under dynamic load transients.
Typical applications include precision ADC and DAC reference inputs, industrial process control loop references, battery-powered instrumentation, portable data loggers, and automotive sensor signal conditioning. Its 100 mA drive also allows it to directly power multiple low-current analog rails in distributed measurement systems.
When designing with this device, ensure the input supply provides at least 0.45 V of dropout headroom above 5 V under worst-case load. A 0.1 µF to 1 µF ceramic bypass capacitor placed close to the supply pin and a 1 µF to 10 µF output capacitor are recommended to ensure stability and to minimize load-transient ringing.
This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in same-package alternatives, and practical design notes not consolidated in any single manufacturer datasheet, giving engineers a single source to evaluate the LT1461CIS8-5 for new designs and as a drop-in replacement on existing PCBs.

Типичное применение
LT1461CIS8-5 подходит для 6 применениеs: Precision ADC and DAC Voltage Reference, Industrial Process Control Loop References, Battery-Powered Portable Instrumentation, Automotive Sensor Signal Conditioning, Test and Measurement Instrumentation, Distributed Analog Power Distribution.
Precision ADC and DAC Voltage Reference
The LT1461CIS8-5 is well suited as a low-noise 5V reference for successive-approximation and sigma-delta ADCs in precision data-acquisition front ends. Its ±0.08% initial accuracy, 35 µA quiescent current, and 100 mA source drive allow it to directly bias the REF pin of a multi-channel 16-/18-bit ADC while contributing negligible error to the conversion result. The series-reference topology eliminates the external bias resistor required by shunt references such as the TL431, simplifying the analog front end and reducing board area.

Industrial Process Control Loop References
In 4-20 mA current-loop transmitters, RTD signal conditioners and bridge excitation circuits, the LT1461CIS8-5 provides a stable 5V rail to excite sensors and bias precision op-amp signal chains. The wide industrial temperature range (-40 °C to +85 °C), combined with the family’s low temperature coefficient and 100 mA drive, supports excitation of multiple load cells or RTDs in distributed measurement systems. The low 35 µA quiescent current also keeps standby power low in loop-powered field instruments.

Battery-Powered Portable Instrumentation
Handheld multimeters, portable data loggers and battery-powered medical instruments benefit from the LT1461CIS8-5’s 35 µA quiescent current, which preserves battery life during standby. The high 100 mA source drive allows the same reference to power a small sensor, an LCD bias rail and a precision op-amp simultaneously, replacing a dedicated LDO in space-constrained portable enclosures. The low-dropout topology supports operation directly from a single Li-Ion cell as it discharges toward 3.7 V.

Automotive Sensor Signal Conditioning
The LT1461CIS8-5 can serve as a stable 5V excitation rail for automotive sensor signal conditioning, including MAP/MAF sensors, oxygen-sensor interfaces and battery-monitoring current shunts. Its 100 mA drive and tight line/load regulation keep the analog front end immune to load-dump and cold-crank disturbances on the 12 V bus. For AEC-Q100-qualified systems the LT1461 family should be reviewed for the specific automotive-grade variant before deployment.

Test and Measurement Instrumentation
Bench multimeters, calibration standards and laboratory data-acquisition systems rely on the LT1461CIS8-5 for its 5 V reference accuracy, low drift and high output drive. The reference can directly bias precision divider networks, calibrator DACs and high-resolution ADCs in the same instrument. The combination of ±0.08% initial accuracy and tight load regulation ensures measurement repeatability over the instrument’s calibration interval.

Distributed Analog Power Distribution
In multi-board or backplane analog systems, the LT1461CIS8-5 can act as a local 5V reference distribution point, providing up to 100 mA of source current to multiple lower-power op-amps and sensors on the same board. Its 35 µA quiescent current is negligible compared to the load it serves, and the SOIC-8 footprint is compatible with high-channel-density layouts where multiple references are deployed. The wide input supply tolerance lets it run directly off an intermediate 12 V or 15 V analog rail.

Заметки по проектированию
Place a 0.1 µF to 1 µF X7R ceramic bypass capacitor as close as possible to the VIN pin and a 1 µF to 10 µF low-ESR ceramic or tantalum capacitor on VOUT. The LT1461 is stable with most output capacitors but low-ESR ceramic on VOUT keeps the load-transient response well damped. Estimated: at 100 mA load step with 1 µF VOUT, expected transient excursion is approximately 50 mV settling in microseconds.
At VIN = 12 V and 100 mA load, dissipation is (12 V − 5 V) × 0.1 A = 0.7 W. The SOIC-8 package has a theta_JA of approximately 160 °C/W on a 1 oz 1 sq inch copper pour, giving a junction temperature rise of about 112 °C above ambient. Reduce VIN to 5.5 V or add a copper pour / thermal via array to keep Tj within the 150 °C absolute maximum.
Do not bypass VOUT with a large-value aluminum electrolytic capacitor alone - its high ESR may cause oscillation. Do not reverse VIN and VOUT. Do not exceed the 30 V absolute maximum input voltage. Do not load the reference with current spikes that exceed 100 mA; the device has no internal short-circuit protection on all variants, so an external fuse or foldback may be required for fault-tolerant designs.
