MAX-M10S-00B Обзор

The u-blox MAX-M10S-00B is an ultra-low-power, high-performance GNSS receiver module built on the u-blox M10 silicon platform and housed in a 9.7 x 10 mm LCC package with integrated TCXO, LNA, and SAW filter. The module concurrently tracks GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and BeiDou constellations across the 1.561 GHz, 1.575 GHz, and 1.602 GHz GNSS bands, delivers a tracking sensitivity of -167 dBm and supports an update/data rate of 921.6 kbps on the UART/USB interface. The MAX-M10S-00B ordering code ships with ROM-based SPG 5.10 firmware on a 500-piece reel.

What is a GNSS receiver module? A GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) receiver module is an integrated electronic assembly that combines the RF front-end (LNA, SAW filter, mixer), baseband correlator, GNSS processor, and a host interface (typically UART, I2C, or SPI) into a single surface-mount component. The host MCU sends configuration commands and receives NMEA or UBX protocol position/velocity/time (PVT) messages, removing the need to design a discrete RF chain. As a sub-category of RF receivers, GNSS modules sit inside the broader RF & Wireless category and serve as the position-and-time reference for any battery-powered or remote-connected embedded product.

Key features of the MAX-M10S-00B include -167 dBm tracking sensitivity (acquiring and maintaining fix in weak-signal environments such as urban canyons), concurrent reception of four GNSS constellations for sub-2 m CEP positioning, integrated SAW+LNA RF front-end for immunity to out-of-band interferers, and ROM-based firmware that cannot be firmware-upgraded in the field. The module also supports both 1.8 V and 3.0 V host interfaces via the VCC and V_BCKP pins, simplifying migration from legacy NEO-M8 designs.

The MAX-M10S-00B is built on the u-blox M10 architecture, manufactured in 28 nm CMOS, and consumes under 25 mW in continuous tracking mode - roughly 2x lower power than the MAX-M8 / NEO-M8 generation. The integrated TCXO provides fast warm-start times of a few seconds and stable reference for weak-signal acquisition, while the on-module SAW filter blocks cellular and Wi-Fi interferers common in asset-tracking deployments. Designers can evaluate the module with the SparkFun MAX-M10S Qwiic breakout or the MIKROE GNSS MAX Click board.

Typical applications include battery-powered asset trackers, wearable fitness and pet-tracking devices, e-scooter and shared-mobility telematics, fleet management OBD dongles, and precision timing reference for cellular IoT modules. Engineers select the MAX-M10S-00B when four-constellation concurrent tracking and ultra-low power matter more than field firmware upgradeability.

When designing with this device, ensure a clean VCC rail with a 1 uF + 100 nF decoupling pair close to the module pins, an active or passive GNSS antenna matched to 50 ohms, and a backup battery on V_BCKP for warm-start ephemeris retention. Choose the pin-compatible MAX-M10M-00B if you do not need the integrated TCXO and prefer a lower BOM cost; the package and pinout are identical for drop-in replacement.

Типичное применение

MAX-M10S-00B подходит для 7 применениеs: Battery-Powered Asset Tracker, Wearable Fitness and Pet Tracker, E-Scooter and Shared-Mobility Telematics, Fleet Management OBD-II Dongle, Precision Timing Reference for Cellular IoT, Drone and UAV Telemetry, Agricultural and Livestock Tracking Sensor.

📱

Battery-Powered Asset Tracker

The MAX-M10S-00B's under-25 mW continuous tracking power and -167 dBm tracking sensitivity make it the reference GNSS module for battery-powered asset trackers that must run for months or years on a primary lithium cell. Concurrent four-constellation reception (GPS L1C/A + GLONASS L1OF + Galileo E1B/C + BeiDou B1I) delivers sub-2 m CEP positioning in open sky and reliable lock in urban canyons where only a few satellites are visible. Designers typically pair the module with a u-blox SARA-R5 LTE Cat-M modem and an ARM Cortex-M0 host, using the integrated TCXO for warm-start times of a few seconds after backup battery disconnect. The 9.7 x 10 mm LCC package fits inside a 25 x 35 mm tracker housing, and the integrated SAW filter rejects cellular uplink interference from the companion LTE modem.

📱

Wearable Fitness and Pet Tracker

Wearable fitness bands and pet trackers demand ultra-low power, small footprint, and reliable indoor/outdoor position handover - all delivered by the MAX-M10S-00B. The module's 25 mW continuous tracking budget allows the wearable to record GPS tracks for 20-30 hours per charge, while the integrated LNA + SAW front-end maintains lock at the wrist or collar where body absorption attenuates satellite signals by 10-15 dB. Concurrent BeiDou reception is particularly valuable in Asia-Pacific markets where pet-tracking apps default to BDS for faster Chinese-region fix acquisition. The -40 C to +85 C operating range supports outdoor winter and summer deployments; the LCC 9.7 x 10 mm footprint integrates cleanly next to a 200 mAh LiPo cell and BLE SoC.

🏭

E-Scooter and Shared-Mobility Telematics

Shared e-scooters and bike-share fleets rely on centimeter-to-meter accurate positioning for parking-zone enforcement, billing, and theft recovery - exactly the use case the MAX-M10S-00B was designed for. Four-constellation concurrent tracking delivers the satellite availability needed for sub-2 m position fixes even when the scooter is parked under tree canopy or inside a parking corral. The integrated TCXO eliminates position drift due to temperature swings from cold mornings to hot asphalt afternoons. The 921.6 kbps UART/USB data rate supports 10 Hz position output for accurate geofence-triggered braking commands. Anti-jamming robustness comes from the on-module SAW filter that rejects the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi interference from the scooter's own IoT controller.

🚗

Fleet Management OBD-II Dongle

OBD-II fleet dongles plug into the vehicle diagnostic port and report position, speed, and engine fault codes over cellular - the MAX-M10S-00B's small LCC footprint and integrated front-end allow it to fit alongside an LTE modem inside a Type-A OBD-II connector housing. The module's -167 dBm tracking sensitivity keeps lock while the vehicle is in a parking garage or tunnel mouth, and the warm-start ephemeris retention via a small backup supercapacitor delivers sub-5-second fix after ignition-on. Concurrent GLONASS reception accelerates fix time at northern latitudes. The 3.3 V VCC draws from the OBD-II battery rail directly, and the wide 2.7-3.6 V VCC tolerance tolerates automotive load-dump transients.

🌐

Precision Timing Reference for Cellular IoT

Cellular IoT base stations and small cells require sub-microsecond timing synchronization, and the MAX-M10S-00B's TIMEPULSE output provides a 1 Hz reference disciplined to GNSS time with sub-50 ns accuracy. The integrated TCXO delivers the short-term stability needed to bridge 1PPS gaps during brief satellite outages, while the -167 dBm sensitivity maintains lock on weak satellite signals at indoor small-cell sites. The module's 9.7 x 10 mm LCC package fits on the timing card alongside the baseband processor. The backup-domain VBCK pin can be powered from a small coin cell to retain ephemeris across primary-power interruptions, ensuring rapid re-acquisition after site reboot.

✈️

Drone and UAV Telemetry

Drones and UAVs require lightweight, low-power GNSS for position hold, return-to-home, and flight-log geotagging. The MAX-M10S-00B's 25 mW tracking power contributes minimally to the drone's overall power budget, while its 10 Hz position update rate supports aggressive flight controllers. Concurrent four-constellation reception improves satellite availability when the drone banks sharply and the patch antenna's sky view is momentarily occluded by the airframe. The integrated SAW filter rejects the 2.4 GHz RC-link interference that can otherwise blind a co-located GNSS receiver. The compact LCC footprint fits on a 36 x 36 mm flight controller board alongside an STM32H7 or PX4 companion computer.

🏭

Agricultural and Livestock Tracking Sensor

Livestock collars and agricultural sensor nodes are deployed in remote areas without cellular coverage, where the MAX-M10S-00B's low power and reliable cold-start performance enable solar-charged battery operation across multi-month deployment cycles. The -167 dBm tracking sensitivity keeps lock on grazing animals under tree canopy, while concurrent Galileo reception accelerates first fix at European latitudes. The wide -40 C to +85 C operating range handles outdoor winter and direct-sun summer temperatures. The LCC package's mechanical robustness tolerates the vibration of an animal collar over months of wear. Backed up by a small lithium coin cell on VBCK, the module retains ephemeris for instant warm-start during daily grazing cycles.

What GNSS constellations does the MAX-M10S-00B support?
The MAX-M10S-00B concurrently tracks GPS (L1C/A), GLONASS (L1OF), Galileo (E1B/C), and BeiDou (B1I) on the 1.561 GHz, 1.575 GHz, and 1.602 GHz bands. According to the u-blox MAX-M10S datasheet (UBX-20035208), concurrent reception of all four constellations delivers sub-2 m CEP positioning accuracy in open sky. The firmware is ROM-based (SPG 5.10 on the -00B variant) so the constellation set cannot be field-upgraded; designers must select the -00B-01 or other ordering code if a different default constellation mix is required.
What is the tracking sensitivity of MAX-M10S-00B?
The MAX-M10S-00B achieves a tracking sensitivity of -167 dBm per the u-blox product family specification. This sensitivity allows the module to maintain satellite lock in weak-signal conditions such as dense urban canyons, vehicle interiors, and under foliage. The integrated TCXO provides a stable reference for the receiver to hold lock on satellites whose carrier power is near the thermal-noise floor. Combined with the integrated SAW filter that rejects cellular and Wi-Fi interferers, this sensitivity is well suited to battery-powered asset-tracking deployments.

The u-blox product page confirms the -00B ordering code ships with ROM-based SPG 5.10 firmware on a 500-piece reel (reel type B1). For prototype orders below reel quantity, distributors will cut tape and ship the required count. Note that this is a different ordering code from the -00B-01, so confirm the firmware version required by your host design before ordering.
What is the difference between MAX-M10S-00B and MAX-M10M-00B?
The MAX-M10S-00B and MAX-M10M-00B share the identical 9.7 x 10 mm LCC package and pinout, making them drop-in compatible, but differ in their onboard reference oscillator: the MAX-M10S-00B uses a TCXO (temperature-compensated crystal oscillator) for faster warm-start times and slightly better weak-signal performance, while the MAX-M10M-00B uses a lower-cost crystal. The MAX-M10M-00B is listed at u-blox at USD 7.86 - roughly 26% lower cost than the S variant - making it attractive for cost-sensitive designs where sub-second warm starts are not required.
What is the difference between MAX-M10S-00B and MAX-M10S-00B-01?
The MAX-M10S-00B and MAX-M10S-00B-01 are the same M10S silicon and identical LCC package, differing only in firmware version and reel quantity: the -00B ships with ROM SPG 5.10 firmware on a 500-piece reel (reel type B1), while the -00B-01 ships on a 1000-piece reel (reel type A3). Per the u-blox MAX-M10S datasheet (UBX-20035208) and integration manual (UBX-20053088), both ordering codes use ROM firmware so they cannot be field-upgraded in the field. Choose the -00B-01 if you need the larger reel for high-volume SMT lines, otherwise the -00B is the standard ordering code.
Is MAX-M10S-00B a drop-in replacement for NEO-M8N?
Yes, the MAX-M10S-00B is the recommended u-blox migration path from the legacy NEO-M8N, but it is NOT a true pin-for-pin drop-in replacement because the package differs: the MAX-M10S uses a 9.7 x 10 mm LCC while the NEO-M8N uses a 16 x 12 mm LCC. Per the icallin.com NEO-M8N-EOL migration guide, PCB footprint redesign is required. The MAX-M10N module is fully pin-compatible with the MAX-M10S and MAX-M10M, allowing straightforward module-to-module replacement within the MAX-M10 family. For NEO-M8N replacement, plan for a PCB revision.
When should I choose MAX-M10S-00B over MAX-M10M-00B?
Choose the MAX-M10S-00B when your design requires the fastest warm-start time-to-first-fix (the TCXO delivers faster lock-on after backup battery disconnect) or when the device will operate across wide temperature extremes where the TCXO's compensation outperforms a plain crystal. Choose the MAX-M10M-00B if BOM cost is the primary constraint and a slightly longer warm start is acceptable. Both modules share the same LCC 9.7 x 10 mm package and pinout, so the choice can be deferred until final BOM review without PCB changes.
What is the best cross-brand equivalent for the MAX-M10S-00B?
There is no true cross-brand drop-in equivalent for the MAX-M10S-00B because it integrates a TCXO, SAW filter, and LNA in a proprietary u-blox LCC package - competitors such as Quectel (e.g. L76K, LC76G) and MediaTek-based modules use different footprints and pinouts. For a same-package drop-in alternative, the u-blox MAX-M10M-00B (no TCXO) and MAX-M10N-00B (upgradeable firmware) are the recommended same-brand alternatives. If your design can tolerate a PCB rework, the Quectel L76-L (multi-constellation, LCC) is a common functional substitute at lower cost.
What is the output data rate of MAX-M10S-00B?
The MAX-M10S-00B supports a maximum update/output data rate of 921.6 kbps on its UART and USB interfaces. The UART defaults to 9600 baud when shipped with ROM SPG 5.10 firmware, but the host MCU can raise it up to 921600 baud via UBX configuration messages. Per the SparkFun community thread on MAX-M10S baud, some -00B modules ship with OTP firmware configured for 38400 baud instead of 9600 - check your module's CFG-UART1-BAUDRATE register before integrating. For position output rates up to 10 Hz, ensure the data link and host processor can sustain the throughput.
What is the operating voltage of MAX-M10S-00B?
The MAX-M10S-00B operates from a main supply VCC of 2.7 V to 3.6 V (3.3 V typical) and a backup domain VBCK of 1.65 V to 3.6 V. The main supply powers the RF front-end and GNSS engine; the backup domain keeps the RTC and ephemeris RAM alive when VCC is removed, allowing warm-start TTFF of a few seconds instead of cold-start minutes. The wide VBCK range (down to 1.65 V) simplifies designs using a small coin-cell or supercapacitor for backup. Power consumption during continuous tracking is under 25 mW per the icallin migration guide.
Where can I download the MAX-M10S-00B datasheet PDF?
The official MAX-M10S datasheet PDF is available directly from u-blox at https://content.u-blox.com/sites/default/files/MAX-M10S_DataSheet_UBX-20035208.pdf (document number UBX-20035208). The module uses a 17-pad LCC land pattern with pin 1 marked by a chamfered corner; key pads include VCC, GND, VBCK, RESET_N, TXD1, RXD1, USB_DP, USB_DN, SDA, SCL, INT, TIMEPULSE, ANT, and RF_IN. A community-curated pin reference is available at https://www.flux.ai/adrian95/max-m10s-00b~pov/files/max-m10s-00b-pin-reference~e4 with pin-by-pin design guidance. Always cross-check against the official integration manual before PCB layout.
Can the MAX-M10S-00B be firmware upgraded in the field?
No, the MAX-M10S-00B ships with ROM-based SPG 5.10 firmware and cannot be upgraded in the field - per the u-blox integration manual, the firmware image is mask-programmed into the module's internal ROM at fabrication. If field firmware upgradeability is required, the MAX-M10N module (flash-based) or the chip-level UBX-M10050-KB / UBX-M10150-KB QFN28 variants should be considered. The MAX-M10N-00B is fully pin-compatible with the MAX-M10S and MAX-M10M, allowing module-to-module migration without PCB changes.
Is the MAX-M10S-00B suitable for asset tracking applications?
Yes, the MAX-M10S-00B is specifically designed for ultra-low-power, high-performance asset-tracking applications per the u-blox datasheet abstract. Its under-25 mW continuous tracking power makes it ideal for battery-powered trackers that must operate for months or years on a single primary cell; the four-constellation concurrent tracking delivers sub-2 m CEP accuracy for fleet management, pet trackers, e-scooter telematics, and pallet tracking. Reference designs from SparkFun (Qwiic breakout) and MIKROE (GNSS MAX Click) accelerate prototyping. Pair with a u-blox SARA-R5 or LTE Cat-M module for cellular-IoT asset tracker end products.

Справочные инженерные данные для MAX-M10S-00B — сравнение, рекомендации по проектированию и информация о соответствии.

Руководство по выбору

Choose the MAX-M10S-00B for ultra-low-power, high-performance asset-tracking and wearable applications where fastest warm-start time (integrated TCXO) and -167 dBm sensitivity matter more than field firmware upgradeability. Choose the MAX-M10M-00B if you can tolerate a crystal-based reference and want to save approximately 26% on BOM cost with the same LCC footprint. Choose the MAX-M10N-00B if your product lifecycle requires in-field firmware updates - the N variant has flash memory instead of ROM and is fully pin-compatible. Choose the MAX-M10S-00B-01 instead of the -00B only if your SMT line requires 1000-piece reels (reel A3) instead of 500-piece reels (reel B1) for high-volume production. All four variants share the identical 9.7 x 10 mm LCC package and pinout, enabling module-to-module migration without PCB changes within the MAX-M10 family.

Заметки по проектированию

The MAX-M10S-00B draws under 25 mW in continuous tracking mode at 3.3 V VCC. Place a 1 uF X7R ceramic + 100 nF decoupling pair within 3 mm of the VCC pad, and a 10 uF bulk capacitor if the host supply rail has >50 mV peak-to-peak ripple. The V_BCKP backup domain should be sourced from a coin cell (CR2032) or supercapacitor (>=0.1 F) to retain ephemeris across primary power cycles - this reduces warm-start TTFF from tens of seconds to a few seconds. The VCC and V_BCKP pins have separate power-on-reset circuitry, so V_BCKP may be brought up before VCC. Estimated: continuous current is approximately 7.5 mA at 3.3 V (25 mW / 3.3 V); backup current is typically 15 uA per the MAX-M10S integration manual.

The LCC 9.7 x 10 mm land pattern requires a 50 ohm coplanar waveguide (with ground) trace from the RF_IN pad to the antenna connector or active-antenna feedline. Use a 0.5 mm wide trace on 0.2 mm FR-4 with the ground plane clearance tuned to your stackup; the SparkFun MAX-M10S Qwiic breakout is a useful layout reference. Place the antenna as far as possible from cellular modems, switching regulators, and high-speed digital buses. The GND pad beneath the module should be flooded with a continuous ground pour stitched with 0.3 mm vias on a 1 mm pitch for thermal and RF return paths. Avoid routing any digital signal traces beneath the module's RF_IN pad - keepout the entire antenna coplanar region.

The UART interface operates up to 921.6 kbps; if your host MCU is more than 50 mm from the module, add a series ferrite bead on TXD1/RXD1 to suppress common-mode noise from switching power supplies. The USB interface (USB_DP / USB_DN) requires 90 ohm differential impedance matching and should be routed as a length-matched differential pair; if USB is unused, leave both USB_DP and USB_DN pads floating - do not connect them to GND as this can increase power consumption. The TIMEPULSE output is a CMOS push-pull signal; route it as a short trace to the host timing reference input and add a 33 ohm series resistor for impedance matching if the trace exceeds 20 mm.

Do not assume the MAX-M10S-00B ships with 9600 baud UART - per the SparkFun community thread, some -00B modules ship with OTP firmware at 38400 baud instead. Query the CFG-UART1-BAUDRATE UBX register on first power-up before sending configuration commands, and configure your host serial port to the actual default. Do not connect USB_DP or USB_DN to anything other than a USB connector or leave them floating; tying them to VCC or GND can cause the USB PHY to enter an undefined state. Do not exceed VCC of 3.6 V (the absolute maximum is 3.6 V per the integration manual); a 3.7 V Li-ion cell directly on VCC will damage the module - use a 3.3 V LDO between the battery and VCC.
