MIC5207-5.0YM5-TR Обзор
An LDO (Low-Dropout) linear regulator is a type of voltage regulator that maintains a stable output voltage even when the input voltage is only marginally higher than the output voltage. LDOs sit within the broader hierarchy of voltage regulators → power management ICs → semiconductor devices. Unlike switching regulators, LDOs introduce no switching noise but dissipate (VIN - VOUT) × IOUT as heat, making them preferred for low-current, low-noise analog rails in battery-powered and portable systems.
Key features include CMOS/TTL-compatible enable input for power sequencing, reversed-battery protection, internal current limiting, and thermal shutdown. The reference bypass pin (BYP) connects an external capacitor to lower output noise well below the level of a conventional LDO, suiting precision analog and RF applications. The MIC5207 series is offered in both fixed (1.5V–5.0V) and adjustable versions.
The regulator uses a PNP pass transistor architecture with a low-noise reference and bandgap, optimized for hand-held and battery-powered devices. The 5-pin SOT-23-5 footprint is industry standard and supported by Microchip's evaluation boards, simplifying PCB integration. Quiescent current remains low across load, an important metric for sleep-mode current budgets in portable equipment.
Typical applications include USB peripherals, wireless dongles, handheld instruments, RFID readers, cellular telephones, and battery-powered sensor modules. The fixed 5.0 V output is convenient for MCU rails, Bluetooth/Wi-Fi module supplies, and ADC reference buffering in space-constrained designs.
Design tip: keep trace lengths from IN and OUT to their respective bypass capacitors short to maintain stability and minimize noise coupling. For lowest noise, place a 10 nF to 100 nF capacitor on the BYP pin.

Типичное применение
MIC5207-5.0YM5-TR подходит для 7 применениеs: USB Peripheral 5V Rail, Handheld Battery-Powered Instrument, Bluetooth / Wi-Fi Module Power, Wireless Sensor Node / IoT Device, Cellular Telephone Subsystem, RFID Reader Module, MCU Core / Logic Rail Supply.
USB Peripheral 5V Rail
The MIC5207-5.0YM5-TR's fixed 5.0V output at 180 mA makes it ideal for powering low-current USB or peripheral logic from a regulated 5V USB input or a Li-Ion cell. With 165 mV typical dropout at 150 mA, it can hold regulation all the way down to about 5.16V on the input rail, a critical property for voltage-sagged USB ports. Place a 1 µF ceramic on IN and a 1 µF ceramic on OUT close to the pins; add a 10 nF capacitor on BYP to drop output noise well below the level typical of conventional LDOs.

Handheld Battery-Powered Instrument
For battery-powered handheld instruments, the MIC5207-5.0YM5-TR's ultra-low 720 µA ground current at 100 mA and 17 mV dropout at light loads preserve battery life in sleep-mode operation. The enable pin supports power sequencing, allowing the MCU to shut the regulator down when the instrument enters standby. The SOT-23-5 package fits small enclosures, and the ±3% output accuracy is sufficient for analog front ends in portable multimeters and barcode readers.

Bluetooth / Wi-Fi Module Power
The MIC5207-5.0YM5-TR is well suited for powering low-power 2.4 GHz wireless modules that require a clean 5V supply. Its reverse-battery protection and current limiting protect the module against fault conditions. With a 10 nF capacitor on the BYP pin, output noise drops below 100 µVrms, an important metric for RF output noise suppression. Designers can drop-in the same footprint for multiple module variants by selecting different fixed-output versions of the MIC5207 family.

Wireless Sensor Node / IoT Device
In IoT sensor nodes powered from 2× AA cells or a Li-Ion battery, the MIC5207-5.0YM5-TR's low quiescent current extends operating time between battery swaps. The 2.5V to 16V input range accommodates direct connection from a charged Li-Ion cell through to 12V system buses, an unusual flexibility for an SOT-23-5 LDO. Designers appreciate the EN pin for sleep-mode shutdown, dropping consumption to a few microamps when the radio is off.

Cellular Telephone Subsystem
The MIC5207-5.0YM5-TR was originally designed for cellular handset subsystems where board area and quiescent current are critical constraints. With SOT-23-5 footprint and 720 µA ground current at 100 mA, it fits comfortably next to PA, audio, and SIM interfaces. The reference bypass pin (BYP) is used in noise-sensitive sections where cellular radio desensitization from power-rail noise is a concern.

RFID Reader Module
For RFID reader modules operating from 12V or 24V industrial supplies, the MIC5207-5.0YM5-TR's 16V maximum input rating and 5V fixed output simplify the power tree. The enable pin allows the host MCU to power-cycle the RFID front end, useful for power-on settling routines. Reverse-battery protection guards against miswired installations in field-deployed readers.

MCU Core / Logic Rail Supply
When a 5V-tolerant digital subsystem needs a clean low-noise supply, the MIC5207-5.0YM5-TR's BYP pin reduces output noise and its thermal-shutdown protection ensures robust operation under fault conditions. The regulator's 180 mA rating covers most 5V MCUs and their support logic, simplifying BOM by replacing discrete regulator designs with a single SOT-23-5 IC.

Заметки по проектированию
At full load (180 mA) with VIN = 7 V and VOUT = 5 V, the device dissipates approximately 0.36 W. The SOT-23-5 package thermal resistance theta_JA is approximately 220 °C/W on a minimum copper area PCB; estimated junction temperature rise is therefore about 79 °C above ambient. Place a small copper pour beneath the IC (at least 0.2 in²) to reduce thermal resistance; this is particularly important at elevated ambient temperatures.
Place the 1 µF ceramic input and output capacitors as close as possible to the IC pins to minimize parasitic inductance. A 10 nF ceramic on the BYP pin (pin 4) reduces output noise to well under 100 µVrms; do not omit this capacitor if low-noise operation is required. Maintain a ground plane under the regulator and route high-current paths away from the BYP node.
Do not exceed the absolute maximum input voltage of 16 V — even brief transients above this level can damage the part. Ensure the EN pin (pin 3) is driven logic-high for normal operation; floating the enable pin may cause undefined behavior. For reverse-battery protection to function correctly, VIN must be driven from a low-impedance source. Avoid using aluminum electrolytic capacitors on the output; ESR stability requires ceramic or low-ESR tantalum.
Estimated: at maximum load of 180 mA and maximum input of 16 V (worst case dissipation), the device dissipates 16V × 180 mA ≈ 2.88 W minus output power, or about (16 - 5) × 0.18 ≈ 2.0 W. With SOT-23-5 thermal resistance ~220 °C/W on minimum copper, junction temperature rise is approximately 440 °C above ambient, well above the 150 °C thermal shutdown limit. Designers must either reduce VIN or add copper area / external heatsinking to keep junction temperature within safe limits.
Keep the ground return path short and direct — connect the GND pin (pin 2) to a low-impedance ground plane. Avoid routing noisy signals (switching converter traces, RF power) under the regulator or its bypass capacitor. For noise-sensitive analog loads, separate the analog ground return from digital ground returns using a star-grounding topology at the regulator's GND pin.
