PIC16C711/JW Обзор
A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer containing a CPU core, program and data memory, I/O peripherals, and interrupt logic on one die. The PIC16C architecture is a RISC design with 35 single-word instructions, an 8-level hardware stack, and a Harvard memory bus that separates program and data paths. This places the PIC16C711 in the microcontrollers -> 8-bit MCUs -> RISC microcontrollers taxonomy under integrated circuits.
Key features include 200 ns instruction execution, 35 single-word instructions, 8-bit timer/counter, 4-channel 8-bit ADC with 8 reference selections, watchdog timer with on-chip RC oscillator, 13 digital I/O pins, and power-on reset. The CERDIP JW package allows repeated UV erasure and reprogramming during prototyping, while production variants (PIC16C711-04/P, PIC16C711-20/P) use the cheaper plastic OTP package.
The device operates from 3.0 V to 6.0 V, contains an internal RC oscillator option, and supports in-circuit serial programming through the RB6/RB7 pins. The architecture is code-compatible with PIC16C5X and PIC12CXXX devices, simplifying migration from older 12-bit cores to the 14-bit PIC16C core. Its ADC supports 4 channels with selectable reference, enabling direct sensor interfacing without external analog components.
Typical applications include industrial control, sensor interfacing, instrumentation, security systems, automotive subsystems, and consumer appliance control. The combination of EPROM programmability, on-chip ADC, and small CERDIP footprint makes it well suited for low-volume prototype development where field re-programmability via UV erase is desired.
When designing with this part, note that the JW (CERDIP) variant is windowed for UV erase and is typically replaced by plastic DIP or SOIC OTP versions in production. The PIC16F716 is the recommended flash-based migration path per the manufacturer product page; it is not pin-compatible in all package options.
This page synthesizes distributor stock levels, parametric alternates, and design migration guidance for engineers maintaining legacy PIC16C711 designs or sourcing replacement parts for obsolete inventory.

Типичное применение
PIC16C711/JW подходит для 6 применениеs: Industrial Sensor Interface, Security and Access Control, Automotive Subsystems (Legacy), Consumer Appliance Control, Test and Measurement Instrumentation, Hobbyist and Prototyping Education.
Industrial Sensor Interface
The PIC16C711/JW is well-suited to industrial sensor interfaces because its integrated 4-channel 8-bit A/D converter accepts analog signals from temperature, pressure, or position sensors directly without external analog multiplexer components. The 20 MHz clock and 200 ns instruction cycle enable real-time sampling and on-the-fly scaling in measurement loops, while 68 bytes of RAM comfortably buffer the few-byte sensor records typical of SCADA field nodes. The 3.0-6.0 V supply range tolerates 5 V industrial rails with battery backup, and the CERDIP JW windowed package supports field firmware updates via UV erase during commissioning. Compared with discrete analog chains, the integrated MCU reduces BOM by one or two op-amps and an external ADC, while the EPROM memory holds the calibration tables and lookup coefficients permanently. Use the 13 I/O pins to drive indicator LEDs, relays, and an RS-232/RS-485 transceiver for backhaul.

Security and Access Control
For security panels and access control readers the PIC16C711/JW offers sufficient program memory (1.75 KB EPROM) for keypad scanning, code-comparison algorithms, and EEPROM emulation of access credentials. The watchdog timer with on-chip RC oscillator guards against software lockups in unattended installations, and the 4-channel ADC allows interface to magnetic-stripe or Wiegand readers. The JW CERDIP variant supports firmware updates during deployment via UV erase, important for security products requiring on-site reprogramming without desoldering. 13 I/O lines drive keypads, LEDs, buzzers, magnetic-door relays, and the tamper switch. Compared with dedicated security controllers, the PIC16C711/JW adds programmability for custom protocols while retaining a low unit cost. Operate the device from a 5 V regulated rail with battery backup for power-loss ride-through.

Automotive Subsystems (Legacy)
The PIC16C711/JW has historically been used in automotive subsystems such as climate-control panels, instrument-cluster indicators, and simple body modules where its 8-bit performance and integrated ADC suffice. The commercial temperature grade (0 to +70 C) restricts deployment to cabin-mounted modules, not under-hood ECUs. The JW CERDIP variant allowed module manufacturers to flash calibration data per vehicle variant during assembly, which was especially useful before CAN-bus programming standards matured. Note that modern automotive designs require AEC-Q100 qualified devices, and the PIC16C711/JW is not AEC-Q100 qualified; new automotive programs should use qualified PIC16F or dsPIC alternatives. The 4-channel 8-bit ADC reads thermistor inputs for HVAC or simple sensor monitoring, and 13 I/O pins drive LCD segments, LEDs, and motor relays.

Consumer Appliance Control
The PIC16C711/JW drives white-goods and small consumer appliances such as coffee makers, washing-machine control boards, microwave keypads, and air-conditioner remote panels. The 35-instruction RISC core is simple to program in assembly or C, and the 4-channel ADC reads temperature, humidity, and weight sensors in the appliance context. The 13 I/O pins drive relays for motor control, triac-trigger circuits for heater elements, and 7-segment or LCD displays for user feedback. EPROM-based memory retains calibration constants across power cycles without requiring an external EEPROM. The commercial 0-70 C temperature grade suits indoor appliance environments. For cost-sensitive products, the plastic DIP package variant is preferred over the JW CERDIP windowed version since production firmware does not need UV erase.

Test and Measurement Instrumentation
The PIC16C711/JW is a fit for low-cost portable test equipment such as handheld multimeters, signal-level meters, and educational lab instruments. The integrated 8-bit ADC delivers adequate resolution for bar-graph-style readings or rough measurement displays where the human eye cannot resolve more than 100 discrete levels. The 20 MHz core performs RMS calculations and linearization in real time at audio-bandwidth sampling rates, while the EPROM stores calibration tables and lookup data. The JW CERDIP package allows firmware updates during development via UV erase, which is valuable for engineering prototypes that need frequent algorithm revisions. 13 I/O pins drive LCD segments, mode switches, and the rotary-encoder input. For OEM-grade lab instruments, migrate to the PIC16F716 flash-based MCU for active production status.

Hobbyist and Prototyping Education
The PIC16C711/JW is widely used in university microcontroller courses and hobbyist projects because the JW windowed CERDIP package permits repeated erase/reprogram cycles for student experimentation. The 35-instruction PIC16C RISC core is small enough to teach assembly programming in a single semester while still supporting realistic peripherals such as the 8-bit ADC and timers. Dev boards exposing all 13 I/O pins plus the 4 analog inputs let students prototype LED matrices, servo drivers, and small-signal data-acquisition projects. The 18-pin through-hole package is breadboard-friendly and accepts standard 0.1-inch headers. Many legacy PIC development kits and programmers support this part via ICSP on pins RB6/RB7. Although obsolete, the part remains in university stocks because of its low cost and the availability of established programming toolchains. New designs should target the PIC16F716 instead.

- Higher maximum clock frequency at 20 MHz (против PIC16C711-04/P)
Заметки по проектированию
The PIC16C711/JW is marked obsolete by Microchip and should not be used for new designs. For new development, plan migration to the PIC16F716 flash-based MCU (same 18-pin PDIP/SOIC footprint, same ADC and I/O, active production status). The JW CERDIP variant's UV-erase window is fragile - do not expose to direct sunlight for long periods as it can erase EPROM contents.
Decouple VDD with a 0.1 uF ceramic capacitor placed as close to pin 18 as possible, plus a bulk electrolytic (10-47 uF) near the supply rail. MCLR/VPP (pin 8) requires a 10 kohm pull-up to VDD; if in-circuit serial programming is used, isolate MCLR with a series resistor or Schottky diode to prevent programming voltage from reaching the rest of the circuit. Place the 4 MHz or 20 MHz crystal with loading capacitors as close to OSC1/OSC2 as possible to minimize parasitic capacitance and EMI.
The 8-bit ADC is sensitive to high-frequency noise on VDD; for precise measurements add a ferrite bead in series with the analog VDD rail and provide a separate analog ground return for the ADC reference. Use the largest possible ADC acquisition time in software (at least 20 us) and average multiple samples to reduce noise. The voltage reference selected via software (VDD, external, or internal) directly determines ADC gain error; calibrate the reference against a known voltage source if measurement accuracy below 2 LSB is required.
