PIC16C774-E/PQ Обзор

The Microchip Technology PIC16C774-E/PQ is an 8-bit CMOS microcontroller from the PIC16 family built on the RISC architecture, featuring 7KB (4K x 14) of one-time programmable (OTP) program memory, 256 x 8 bytes of RAM, and 33 digital I/O pins, all integrated into a 44-pin MQFP (10x10 mm) surface-mount package. The device executes instructions in a 200 ns cycle at a 20 MHz clock rate, balances powerful processing with a small 35-instruction instruction set, and operates from a single 4.0V to 5.5V supply across a -40C to +125C ambient temperature range suitable for industrial and automotive-grade designs.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU, memory (program + RAM), and programmable I/O peripherals, used to sense, control, and communicate in embedded systems. PIC microcontrollers sit in the 8-bit MCU category within the broader microcontroller hierarchy (4-bit -> 8-bit -> 16-bit -> 32-bit MCUs -> embedded processors), are widely deployed for deterministic real-time control, and offer low power, low cost, and easy in-circuit programmability. The PIC16C774-E/PQ specifically combines general-purpose digital I/O with high-precision analog conversion, making it a hybrid digital-plus-analog MCU.

Key features include 10 channels of 12-bit A/D conversion (giving designers the ability to discriminate smaller signal changes and reduce external analog signal conditioning), on-chip peripherals for brown-out detect/reset (BOR), power-on reset (POR), pulse-width modulation (PWM), and a watchdog timer (WDT), and serial connectivity via I2C, SPI, and UART/USART. The 12-bit ADC resolution offers 16x the resolution of common 10-bit converters, allowing direct interface with precision sensors without external ADCs.

The PIC16C774 architecture uses a Harvard-style RISC core with separate program/data buses, 14-bit-wide instruction words, and an external oscillator interface. Compared with PIC16C7x predecessors that offer 8-bit ADCs, the 12-bit ADC widens dynamic range by approximately 16x and reduces quantization noise, enabling measurements previously requiring dedicated ADC ICs. The OTP program memory is one-time programmable in-circuit, allowing rapid prototyping without package-specific windowed erase cycles.

Typical applications include industrial automation control, precision sensor signal acquisition, motor and valve control, consumer electronics with analog front ends, automotive body and chassis subsystems, and instrumentation requiring mixed-signal acquisition. The 33 I/O pins and 10 ADC channels suit designs that previously required a microcontroller plus an external ADC.

When designing with this device, note that OTP memory cannot be erased in-circuit. For development, choose the JW windowed ceramic variant, and reserve engineering samples for in-system validation. Decoupling the VDD/VSS pair with 0.1 uF ceramic capacitors close to the pins and following Microchip's recommended oscillator layout minimizes EMI and improves ADC accuracy.

Типичное применение

PIC16C774-E/PQ подходит для 6 применениеs: Industrial Automation Control, Precision Sensor Signal Acquisition, Motor and Valve Control, Consumer Electronics with Analog Front End, Automotive Body and Chassis Subsystems, Instrumentation and Data Acquisition Modules.

🏭

Industrial Automation Control

The PIC16C774-E/PQ is well-suited to industrial PLC and process-control modules because it combines 33 general-purpose I/O with 10 channels of 12-bit ADC for direct sensor interfacing. Its 20 MHz CPU delivers 5 MIPS of deterministic throughput for PID loop execution, while the -40C to +125C extended temperature grade supports unenclosed factory-floor operation. The on-chip PWM peripherals drive actuators and motor pre-drivers without external timing ICs, and brown-out reset plus watchdog timer maintain operation through supply transients on noisy industrial buses. Compared with PIC16C7x predecessors, the 12-bit ADC removes quantization error that previously forced an external ADC stage.

🧩

Precision Sensor Signal Acquisition

The 10-channel 12-bit ADC integrated into the PIC16C774-E/PQ makes it ideal for multi-sensor acquisition boards measuring strain gauges, thermocouples, pressure transducers, and flow meters. The 12-bit resolution (4096 codes) versus the 256 codes of an 8-bit ADC widens measurement dynamic range by 4x and eliminates external ADC ICs that would otherwise increase BOM cost and PCB area. SPI/I2C connectivity allows the PIC16C774-E/PQ to act as a host controller for digital sensors while its 256-byte RAM and 7KB OTP program memory hold real-time linearization tables. The -E extended temperature grade allows deployment directly at the sensor location without thermal conditioning.

🚗

Motor and Valve Control

Drive brushed DC motors, stepper motors, and proportional valves from the PIC16C774-E/PQ's on-chip PWM channels and 33 I/O pins without external timer ICs. The capture/compare/PWM (CCP) modules generate accurate switching waveforms for H-bridge drivers and MOSFET gate drivers, while the 12-bit ADC reads back current sense amplifiers and position feedback for closed-loop control. At 20 MHz, the 200 ns instruction cycle supports sub-microsecond control loop updates, suitable for medium-speed servo applications. The -40C to +125C operating range supports automotive under-hood and industrial cabinet environments.

📱

Consumer Electronics with Analog Front End

Use the PIC16C774-E/PQ in consumer appliances that combine user I/O (keypads, displays, LEDs) with analog sensing (temperature, humidity, weight). The 33 I/O pins drive 7-segment displays and key matrices directly, while the 10-channel 12-bit ADC reads thermistors, load cells, and capacitive touch sensors through on-chip multiplexing. UART/USART connectivity links the appliance to a master controller or Bluetooth module. OTP memory protects proprietary calibration constants from read-back, valuable in cost-sensitive consumer markets.

🚗

Automotive Body and Chassis Subsystems

The PIC16C774-E/PQ's -40C to +125C extended temperature grade and OTP memory make it a fit for non-safety automotive body modules such as seat controllers, mirror adjusters, lighting controllers, and HVAC blend-door actuators. The 12-bit ADC reads position sensors and temperature probes with 4x the resolution of legacy 8-bit automotive MCUs, enabling finer motor control and more accurate thermal regulation. Brown-out reset and watchdog timer guard against automotive load-dump and cranking transients, while SPI allows connection to dashboard body controllers. Note this part is not AEC-Q100 qualified; for safety-critical designs, choose the PIC16F or PIC18 equivalent.

🖥️

Instrumentation and Data Acquisition Modules

Build a compact 10-channel data acquisition module around the PIC16C774-E/PQ, using the on-chip 12-bit ADC to digitize analog inputs at up to approximately 50 ksps aggregate. The 33 I/O pins drive status LEDs, range relays, and trigger inputs, while UART/USART streams acquired data to a host PC or display. The 7KB OTP program memory holds calibration coefficients and scaling algorithms without external EEPROM, and brown-out reset preserves data integrity through supply glitches. The extended -40C to +125C operating range supports laboratory, field, and outdoor instrumentation environments.

What is the program memory size of PIC16C774-E/PQ?
The PIC16C774-E/PQ contains 7 KB of one-time programmable (OTP) program memory organized as 4K x 14-bit words. This 14-bit instruction width allows each instruction to encode a full opcode plus an 8-bit literal or address field, typical of PIC16 family MCUs. For development cycles requiring repeated erasing, the JW (windowed) ceramic variant should be used; the production PQ MQFP package is OTP only.
How many ADC channels does PIC16C774-E/PQ have and what is the resolution?
The PIC16C774-E/PQ integrates 10 channels of 12-bit Analog-to-Digital conversion on-chip. According to the Microchip PIC16C774 datasheet, the 12-bit ADC gives designers the ability to discriminate smaller signal changes and eliminates the need for external ADC circuitry, providing 4096 discrete codes per channel versus the 256 codes of a typical 8-bit converter. The ADC shares pins with general-purpose I/O and is selected via the ADCON1 register.
What is the operating voltage range of PIC16C774-E/PQ?
The PIC16C774-E/PQ operates from a single 4.0V to 5.5V supply on VDD, with the -E (Extended) temperature grade supporting -40C to +125C ambient. The 5V nominal operation is standard for PIC16 OTP parts; designs migrating from PIC16C77x parts with 8-bit ADCs benefit from the same supply range while gaining the 12-bit ADC resolution without external components.
What package does PIC16C774-E/PQ use?
The PIC16C774-E/PQ is housed in a 44-pin Metric QFP (MQFP) measuring 10x10 mm with surface-mount gull-wing leads. The /PQ suffix in Microchip's naming convention denotes the 44-MQFP. Designers should refer to the package drawing in the PIC16C774 datasheet Section 2 for lead pitch and footprint recommendations.

PIC16C774-E/PQ vs PIC16C774-I/PQ - which should I choose?
The PIC16C774-E/PQ operates across -40C to +125C ambient (Extended grade), while the PIC16C774-I/PQ is the Industrial grade variant covering -40C to +85C. Both share the same 44-MQFP package, 7KB OTP, 12-bit ADC, and 33 I/O pins. According to Microchip's PIC16C774 datasheet ordering information, choose -E for automotive or harsh industrial environments, and -I for standard commercial/industrial enclosures with relaxed thermal budgets.
Is PIC16C774-E/PQ a drop-in replacement for PIC16C765?
No - the PIC16C774-E/PQ is not a drop-in replacement for the PIC16C765. The PIC16C765 integrates a full-speed USB 1.1 device peripheral and uses a different pinout with USB D+/D- pins remapped. Both share the 44-MQFP footprint but pin functions differ at the USB-capable pins. Designers replacing a PIC16C765 must migrate to a USB-equipped flash part such as PIC18F4550 or PIC16F1459 with redesigned firmware, not the PIC16C774.
When should I choose PIC16C774-E/PQ over the flash-memory PIC16F877A?
Choose the PIC16C774-E/PQ only when the application requires legacy code compatibility, OTP memory for security against firmware read-back, or when the PIC16F877A's 14-bit flash core is unavailable and a verified PIC16C design must be maintained. For new designs, the PIC16F877A is preferred: it offers in-circuit reprogrammability, longer-term supply, lower unit cost at 1k+ quantities, and pin-to-pin compatibility on the 44-MQFP for most functions per Microchip's migration guide.
What is the best drop-in replacement for PIC16C774-E/PQ?
The most direct drop-in alternative in the same 44-MQFP package is the PIC16C774-I/PQ (Industrial temperature grade variant, -40C to +85C), which shares the same die and pinout. For designs accepting reduced temperature range, this is a true pin-to-pin swap. For designs needing the -E extended grade, the PIC16C774T-E/PQ (tape-and-reel packaging variant of -E grade) is also fully drop-in. All variants share the same 7KB OTP, 12-bit ADC, 33 I/O, and 20 MHz maximum clock.
Can ATMEGA88V-10PJ replace PIC16C774-E/PQ?
No - the ATMEGA88V-10PJ is not a drop-in replacement for the PIC16C774-E/PQ. Despite being a similar 8-bit MCU, the ATmega88 uses an AVR RISC core with different instruction set, registers, and peripherals, plus a 28-pin DIP/JW/MLF package - not the 44-MQFP package of the PIC16C774. Migrating from PIC16C774 to ATmega88 requires full firmware rewrite, hardware redesign, and a different PCB footprint; this is a redesign, not a replacement.

Заметки по проектированию

Place a 0.1 uF ceramic decoupling capacitor as close as possible to each VDD/VSS pair (pins 13, 31, 44 share VDD; pins 12, 30, 43 share VSS). For designs with heavy ADC switching noise, add a bulk 10 uF tantalum or ceramic capacitor near the package. Keep the MCLR/VPP pull-up (typically 10 kohm) close to pin 3 to improve noise immunity. Route the OSC1/OSC2 traces short and surrounded by ground pour to minimize EMI coupling into the analog inputs.

For accurate 12-bit ADC readings, configure the ADC with adequate acquisition time (typically 20 us for 10 kohm source impedance) and avoid switching digital I/O during ADC conversions to prevent digital noise coupling. Use AVdd/Vref+ from a low-noise source - a ferrite bead plus filter capacitor is recommended when AVdd shares a regulator with digital logic. Disable unused ADC channels via ADCON1 to prevent floating-input shoot-through current that can degrade active channel accuracy.

OTP memory cannot be erased or rewritten - if firmware development cycles are expected, prototype with the JW (windowed) ceramic variant PIC16C774/JW rather than the production PQ MQFP package. Confirm oscillator stability across the full -40C to +125C range; high-ESR crystals can fail to start at temperature extremes. When migrating from PIC16C77 (8-bit ADC) firmware, recalibrate all ADC-dependent code paths; the 12-bit ADC requires different scaling constants, threshold values, and timing.
