PIC16F84AT-04I/SS Обзор

The Microchip Technology PIC16F84AT-04I/SS is an 8-bit CMOS RISC microcontroller in the PIC16F family, featuring a 4 MHz core, 1.75 KB (1K x 14) of Flash program memory, 68 bytes of SRAM, and 64 bytes of EEPROM, housed in a 20-pin SSOP package. It integrates 13 general-purpose digital I/O pins, a Power-On Reset (POR), a Watchdog Timer (WDT), and 35 single-word instructions, with all instructions executing in a single cycle except program branches which take two cycles (400 ns instruction cycle at 10 MHz clock input).

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU, memory, and programmable I/O peripherals. The PIC16F84A belongs to the 8-bit microcontroller hypernym, then to the CMOS RISC architecture family, then to the microcontroller category, then to the embedded computing class. This 8-bit MCU category occupies the low-power, deterministic, low-cost niche of embedded systems, typically used where predictable timing and code simplicity outweigh raw throughput.

Key features include a 4 MHz maximum operating frequency (10 MHz on the -10 variant), 1024 x 14 words of Flash program memory with in-circuit serial programming support, 64 bytes of EEPROM data memory with 1M erase/write cycle endurance, and 13 bidirectional I/O pins with individual direction control. The device operates over an industrial temperature range of -40C to +85C and supports supply voltages from 2.0V to 5.5V, with low-power consumption suitable for battery-backed designs.

The PIC16F84A uses Microchip's classic Harvard RISC architecture with separate program and data buses, 14-bit wide instruction word, and a hardware stack depth of 8 levels. Its deterministic instruction timing simplifies real-time control loops, while the 35-instruction RISC set reduces code density overhead compared to CISC 8-bit MCUs of the same era.

Typical applications include industrial control logic, hobbyist and educational microcontroller boards, simple sensor interfaces, automotive body electronics (non-safety), and legacy embedded system replacements. The 13 I/O and 1.75 KB Flash make it well-suited to small deterministic control tasks where upgrade cost outweighs the benefit of migrating to a newer PIC16F1xxx or PIC18 family part.

When designing with this part, note that the original PIC16F84 (non-A) is officially marked obsolete by Microchip and replaced by the PIC16F84A. Choose the -04 speed grade (4 MHz) for low-power or 5V designs; the -10 grade (10 MHz) is required only when the 400 ns instruction cycle must be exploited at full throughput.

This page consolidates distributor pricing, package-compatible drop-in alternatives within the PIC16F84A family, and practical design notes not found in the manufacturer datasheet alone.

Типичное применение

PIC16F84AT-04I/SS подходит для 6 применениеs: Industrial Control Logic, Hobbyist and Educational Microcontroller Boards, Simple Sensor Interface Modules, Automotive Body Electronics (Non-Safety), Legacy Embedded System Replacement and Maintenance, Battery-Backed Low-Power Embedded Nodes.

🏭

Industrial Control Logic

The PIC16F84AT-04I/SS fits industrial control logic applications because its -40C to +85C industrial temperature range, 4 MHz deterministic core, and 13 GPIO pins cover the requirements of relay drivers, sensor-multiplexed I/O, and small PLC-style state machines. Its Harvard RISC architecture gives predictable 1 us instruction timing at 4 MHz, which simplifies encoder reading, debounce loops, and PWM generation without RTOS overhead. The 1.75 KB Flash holds 600-800 instructions of structured control code, sufficient for machine sequencing, while 68 bytes of SRAM accommodate state variables and stack frames. Power-On Reset and Watchdog Timer reduce external supervisory component count, which lowers BOM cost in factory automation panels where long-term stability outweighs raw throughput.

🔧

Hobbyist and Educational Microcontroller Boards

The PIC16F84AT-04I/SS has been a teaching staple since the mid-1990s because its 35-instruction RISC set is approachable for first-time embedded programmers. The SSOP-20 footprint is easy to breadboard with a breakout PCB, and the 4 MHz core supports assembly-language tutorials covering GPIO, timers, and EEPROM emulation without overwhelming beginners. Its 1.75 KB Flash provides enough headroom for student projects such as digital clocks, reaction timers, and simple motor controllers, while 13 GPIO pins support the LEDs, buttons, and 7-segment displays commonly used in lab exercises. The Microchip MPLAB X IDE and PICkit programmer support this device natively, giving educators a free, well-documented toolchain for classroom and lab use.

🧩

Simple Sensor Interface Modules

The PIC16F84AT-04I/SS is well matched to simple sensor interface modules that read a few digital sensors and present data through GPIO toggling or low-speed bit-banged protocols. With 13 GPIO and 64 bytes of EEPROM for calibration constants, it can front-end discrete sensors, mechanical switches, and quadrature encoders without external memory. The 4 MHz instruction cycle is fast enough for software UART at 9600 baud if required, although the absence of a hardware UART limits sustained serial throughput. Its 2.0V to 5.5V supply range accommodates both 3.3V and 5V sensor rails, while low-power sleep modes extend battery life in remote sensor nodes that wake periodically to take a measurement and transmit.

🚗

Automotive Body Electronics (Non-Safety)

The PIC16F84AT-04I/SS in the -04I industrial grade variant supports non-safety automotive body electronics such as interior lighting controllers, accessory timers, and door-lock sequencers where its 13 GPIO can drive MOSFET gates or relay coils. The -40C to +85C industrial temperature range covers cabin environments, and the 1.75 KB Flash holds small state machines for body-control logic. However, this part is not AEC-Q100 qualified and lacks the CAN/LIN peripherals required for modern automotive networks, so designers should restrict it to legacy non-safety subsystems or migrate to AEC-Q100-qualified PIC16F1xxx family parts for new designs. The PIC16F84A remains useful for maintaining existing automotive aftermarket products whose firmware was developed on the PIC16F8X platform.

🖥️

Legacy Embedded System Replacement and Maintenance

The PIC16F84AT-04I/SS is most commonly sourced today as a maintenance part for legacy products whose firmware was developed on the original PIC16F84 or PIC16F84A platform. Because it is instruction-set compatible with the PIC16F84A and pin-compatible with the SSOP-20 footprint, it can be ordered as a form-fit-function replacement when a board-level repair requires a like-for-like MCU swap. Designers maintaining older equipment will appreciate that the original assembly source code can be re-assembled for this part without modification, preserving decades of field-tested firmware. For new designs, Microchip recommends migrating to the active PIC16F84A die or to a PIC16F1xxx family MCU with on-chip peripherals that eliminate the need for external ADC, UART, or EEPROM chips.

⚡

Battery-Backed Low-Power Embedded Nodes

The PIC16F84AT-04I/SS supports battery-backed low-power embedded nodes because its 2.0V minimum supply voltage allows operation from a single lithium cell down to its end-of-life voltage, while its low-power sleep mode draws microamp-level current when the core is halted. A 4 MHz instruction cycle is fast enough to wake, sample, and transmit before returning to sleep, conserving battery capacity. The 64-byte EEPROM stores configuration and calibration data through power cycles, and 13 GPIO provide flexible wake-up sources through the interrupt-on-change feature on port B. For applications requiring extended battery life in remote monitoring, this part's deterministic low-power behavior and small Flash footprint make it economical for volume deployment in wireless sensor nodes.

Справочные инженерные данные для PIC16F84AT-04I/SS — сравнение, рекомендации по проектированию и информация о соответствии.

Руководство по выбору

Choose the PIC16F84AT-04I/SS only for maintenance builds where firmware was originally written for the PIC16F84 or PIC16F84A platform and exact part-number substitution is required. For new designs, Microchip recommends the active PIC16F84A-04I/SS variant, which uses the same SSOP-20 footprint, same 1.75 KB Flash, same 68-byte RAM, same 64-byte EEPROM, same 13 GPIO, and same instruction set but is in active production rather than obsolete. If the design requires more than 4 MHz throughput, choose PIC16F84A-10I/SS (10 MHz) or PIC16F84A-20I/SS (20 MHz); both share the identical SSOP-20 pinout and are drop-in compatible. For designs needing built-in ADC, UART, SPI, or I2C peripherals, migrate to the PIC16F88-I/SS or PIC16F628A-I/SS in the same SSOP-20 footprint, accepting that register layout and interrupt vectors will require firmware changes.

Заметки по проектированию

The PIC16F84AT-04I/SS operates from a single 2.0V to 5.5V supply on Vdd (pin 14) with Vss (pin 5) as ground. Place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor as close as possible to the Vdd pin and a 10 uF bulk capacitor near the MCU power input to suppress voltage transients when GPIO banks switch simultaneously. The MCLR reset pin (pin 4) requires a 10 kohm pull-up to Vdd for normal operation; in noisy industrial environments add a 100 nF capacitor from MCLR to Vss to improve reset noise immunity. The internal Power-On Reset (POR) holds the device in reset until Vdd reaches the POR threshold, simplifying firmware initialization.

Route the crystal or ceramic resonator traces from pins 15 (OSC2) and 16 (OSC1) to the load capacitors with short, symmetric PCB traces to avoid injection of switching noise. For a 4 MHz crystal, use 15-33 pF load capacitors to GND as recommended in the datasheet. Place the MCLR pull-up components and decoupling capacitors within 5 mm of their respective pins to minimize parasitic inductance. The SSOP-20 thermal pad is not present on this package; rely on the GND pin copper pour for heat dissipation, which is adequate given the low core current.

Do not exceed the absolute maximum Vdd rating of 7.0V or the -0.3V to Vdd+0.3V GPIO voltage range. Always configure unused GPIO pins as outputs (not inputs) to prevent floating-pin current leakage through the CMOS input stages, which can add 1-5 uA per pin. The PIC16F84A has only one full 8-bit-wide port (port B) and a 5-bit port (port A); ensure code uses the correct TRIS register names (TRISA, TRISB) and bit masks. Watchdog Timer must be cleared (CLRWDT) in any loop longer than 18 ms at 4 MHz, or use the WDT-disabled configuration fuse if deterministic timing is required. The PIC16F84 (non-A) is obsolete - do not design new products around it.
