PIC16LF1713-E/SP Обзор

The Microchip Technology PIC16LF1713-E/SP is an 8-bit PIC16F microcontroller running up to 32 MHz from the eXtreme Low Power (XLP) family, integrating 7 KB of Flash program memory (4K x 14 words), 512 bytes of SRAM, and 256 bytes of EEPROM in a 28-pin SPDIP through-hole package. The LF variant supports a wide 1.8 V to 3.6 V supply range, making it well suited to battery-powered designs where quiescent current and brown-out resilience dominate the BOM budget.

An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a compact von-Neumann or Harvard CPU with on-chip Flash, RAM and peripherals, used to sense, time and drive modest logic loads in embedded systems. Within that taxonomy the PIC16F family is the mid-range Microchip core (14-bit instruction word) sitting between the baseline PIC10/12 and the high-performance PIC18; the LF sub-family targets low-voltage, low-power nodes, and the XLP umbrella adds nanoWatt sleep modes for energy harvesting and IoT endpoints.

The PIC16LF1713 integrates an unusually rich analog and digital peripheral set for its class: a 10-bit ADC with Computation (ADC2) including hardware averaging and threshold compare, two op-amps, a 5-bit and an 8-bit DAC, two comparators, a Numerically Controlled Oscillator (NCO), a Zero-Cross Detector (ZCD), Configurable Logic Cells (CLC), Peripheral Pin Select (PPS), Capture/Compare/PWM, EUSART, and I2C/SPI. Up to 17 I/O pins are available with 5 V-tolerant inputs on most ports, and the device retains the legacy mid-range instruction set so existing PIC16 toolchains (MPLAB X, XC8, MCC code configurator) support it natively.

The MCU's headline value lies in collapsing what would normally be three or four external analog ICs into a single die. The integrated op-amps can form active filters for sensor conditioning, the CLC blocks replace small glue-logic gates, and PPS lets designers remap digital peripherals to almost any I/O, easing PCB layout in tight enclosures. This integration, combined with 32 MHz operation and < 50 nA typical sleep current, makes it well matched to wireless sensor nodes, e-metering, automotive body controllers, and low-cost signal-conditioning front-ends.

Practical applications span IoT sensor nodes, battery-powered instrumentation, LED lighting controllers, consumer appliances, and small motor or fan drivers where analog feedback is required. When designing with this device, allocate I/O pins carefully against the PPS map because most digital peripherals can be routed to multiple pins but the analog pins (op-amp, ADC) are largely fixed. Also confirm the LF voltage range (1.8-3.6 V) is compatible with your battery profile before migrating from a PIC16F1713.

Типичное применение

PIC16LF1713-E/SP подходит для 6 применениеs: IoT Battery-Powered Wireless Sensor Node, Automotive Body Control Module, Smart LED Lighting Driver with Dimming, Industrial Sensor Signal Conditioning, Consumer Appliance User Interface Controller, Small Fan / Brushless DC Motor Controller.

🧩

IoT Battery-Powered Wireless Sensor Node

The PIC16LF1713-E/SP is well-matched to wireless sensor endpoints because its 1.8-3.6 V LF supply runs directly from a single Li-ion or two AA cells, while the nanoWatt XLP sleep modes drop quiescent current below 100 nA to extend battery life. The on-chip 10-bit ADC with Computation can sample thermistor or analog-front-end outputs without an external amplifier, and the two integrated op-amps build the sensor bias network without extra silicon. The PPS block lets the same firmware route UART to a sub-GHz radio's TX/RX pins or an SPI bus to an accelerometer, simplifying PCB layout for compact modules. Designers should budget I/O against the PPS map because not every peripheral can sit on every pin.

🚗

Automotive Body Control Module

The PIC16LF1713-E/SP fits body-control applications such as seat controllers, lighting nodes, and HVAC flaps because its extended -40 C to +125 C rating and integrated analog peripherals replace external comparators and op-amps. The 8-bit DAC and PWM block drive LED current regulators directly, while the ZCD (Zero-Cross Detector) synchronizes triac control for AC loads without extra circuitry. The on-chip CLC (Configurable Logic Cell) implements custom glue logic such as de-bounce or sequence interlocks that previously required a small gate-IC. Engineers should verify that the LF voltage range meets the cold-cranking profile of their target vehicle before finalizing the BOM.

💡

Smart LED Lighting Driver with Dimming

The PIC16LF1713-E/SP drives multi-channel LED lighting strips where smooth dimming and color mixing require precise PWM, an on-chip op-amp for current sense amplification, and a 10-bit ADC for closed-loop current feedback. The NCO generates dithered PWM frequencies to avoid visible flicker without external timers, while the 5-bit and 8-bit DACs set trim thresholds for thermal foldback. With PPS, designers route EUSART to a DMX or DALI bridge on the same board without remapping firmware, keeping the BOM compact. Ensure the op-amp output swing fits within the LF supply when designing low-side current-sense topologies.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Signal Conditioning

The PIC16LF1713-E/SP is suitable for industrial 4-20 mA loop transmitters, RTD conditioning, and bridge-sensor front-ends because the integrated two op-amps implement instrumentation-amp style gain stages without external precision resistors. The 10-bit ADC with hardware averaging (ADC2) filters 50/60 Hz line noise, while the DAC sets excitation current for RTD self-heating compensation. The CLC block replaces external flip-flops used to debounce limit-switch inputs, shrinking PCB area in DIN-rail modules. Confirm sensor common-mode voltage stays within the LF supply rails to avoid input-stage saturation in field installations.

📱

Consumer Appliance User Interface Controller

The PIC16LF1713-E/SP powers front-panel user interfaces for white goods, coffee machines, and small kitchen appliances where capacitive touch, multi-LED feedback, and rotary encoder inputs must coexist on a single MCU. The PPS-remap EUSART drives the main control board, while the CLC generates debounce and quadrature-decoding for encoders without external logic. The integrated op-amps amplify small signals from thermopile or NTC sensors used in temperature feedback loops, and the LF voltage range allows direct Li-ion battery operation in portable blenders or hand vacuums. Allocate PPS channels carefully to keep both I2C and the encoder on the same MCU.

🏭

Small Fan / Brushless DC Motor Controller

The PIC16LF1713-E/SP runs small BLDC fans or pumps where the integrated op-amp acts as a current-sense amplifier and the ZCD (Zero-Cross Detector) times back-EMF commutation without a dedicated position sensor. The PWM and CCP blocks drive the gate-driver inputs directly, while the 10-bit ADC samples phase voltages for sensorless startup. The NCO outputs precise timing signals for commutation tables, and PPS lets the firmware reassign pins when PCB variants are reused for 12 V vs 24 V motor rails. Confirm motor stall current stays below the MCU I/O sink limit or use external gate drivers for higher-current designs.

Заметки по проектированию

The LF voltage variant requires a regulated supply in the 1.8 V to 3.6 V window. Estimated: at 32 MHz CPU clock and full peripheral activity, the core draws roughly 5 mA from VDD, so a low-dropout LDO with at least 50 mA headroom (e.g., Microchip MCP1700 or TPS7A02) is recommended. Decoupling is critical: place a 100 nF X7R ceramic as close as practical to VDD (pin 7) and a bulk 4.7 uF tantalum or ceramic on the same rail. Connect all VSS pins (pin 6 plus any unused analog ground) directly to a low-impedance ground plane.

The integrated op-amps are routed to fixed pins (OPA1OUT on RC6, OPA2OUT on RC5) and cannot be remapped via PPS. Layout the analog signal traces short and symmetric to avoid introducing offset. Place the 10-bit ADC reference capacitor on Vref+ (RA3) and keep digital switching traces away from analog inputs. According to the Microchip datasheet, the analog and digital sections share an internal AVdd/AVss that should be tied to VDD/VSS at the package with separate analog and digital ground regions joined at a single point (star ground).

MCLR (RE3) is an input-only pin and must never be driven high by an external source; the internal weak pull-up is enabled by configuration bit, but for production boards always add an external 10 kohm pull-up plus 100 nF decoupling on RE3 to ensure clean reset transitions. Programming pins RB6/ICSPCLK and RB7/ICSPDAT are shared with general I/O; if your PCB ties these to external circuitry, isolate them with series resistors (e.g., 4.7 k ohm) so that in-circuit serial programming (ICSP) does not conflict with attached devices, per Microchip programming spec DS33014.
