PIC16LF1783-E/ML Обзор

The Microchip Technology PIC16LF1783-E/ML is an 8-bit PIC® XLP™ 16F-series RISC microcontroller running at up to 32 MHz, integrating 7 KB Flash, 512 B RAM, and 256 B EEPROM into a 28-pin QFN (6x6 mm) package with exposed pad. It operates from 2.5 V to 3.3 V (LF low-voltage variant) and integrates high-value analog peripherals including a 12-bit ADC, an 8-bit DAC, operational amplifiers (OPAmps), fast comparators, a Programmable Switched Mode Controller (PSMC), Capture/Compare/PWM, plus I2C, SPI, and EUSART.

A PIC16F/LF178x microcontroller is a mid-range 8-bit MCU from Microchip that combines the legacy PIC mid-range instruction set with enhanced analog and digital peripherals, belonging to the broader PIC® microcontroller family in the 8-bit microcontroller category of integrated circuits (semiconductor hierarchy: MCU -> 8-bit microcontroller -> microcontroller -> embedded IC). The 'LF' prefix denotes the wide low-voltage VDD range used in battery-powered applications, while 'F' is the standard 5V variant. The XLP™ (eXtreme Low Power) nanoWatt technology family targets applications where quiescent current in the microampere range is mandatory.

Key features of this part include 7 KB (4K x 14) self-programmable Flash, 256 B EEPROM, 12-bit ADC with computation, 8-bit DAC, on-chip operational amplifiers, fast comparators, PSMC peripheral for advanced power conversion, four 16-bit timers, and nanoWatt XLP sleep current. The QFN-28 (6x6) exposed-pad package provides low thermal resistance and a compact footprint suitable for handheld and space-constrained designs.

Architecturally, the device uses a Harvard-style RISC core with a 14-bit instruction word and an 8-bit data path, and integrates rich analog peripherals directly on-die to reduce external BOM cost. The PSMC block adds configurable dead-band control and resolution for digital power conversion tasks, which historically required dedicated PWM controllers.

Typical applications include portable medical sensors, battery-powered IoT nodes, LED lighting control, motor control with PSMC, and industrial sensor signal conditioning. The wide LF VDD range makes it well suited to 2x AA alkaline or single-cell Li-ion designs. When designing, ensure the exposed pad is soldered to a sufficient ground copper pour for thermal dissipation and that MPLAB X IDE with a PICkit 5 or ICD is used for programming and debug.

Типичное применение

PIC16LF1783-E/ML подходит для 6 применениеs: Portable Medical Sensor Hub, Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Node, LED Lighting Control with PSMC, Industrial Sensor Signal Conditioning, Low-Voltage Motor Control, Smart Remote Control with Touch.

💊

Portable Medical Sensor Hub

The PIC16LF1783-E/ML fits portable medical sensor hubs because its 2.5-3.3 V VDD range accepts two AA alkaline cells directly, and its nanoWatt XLP sleep current (sub-microamp typical) extends battery life to multi-year operation on a single coin cell or AA pair. The on-chip 12-bit ADC with computation handles sensor signal conditioning for temperature, SpO2, or pulse-oximetry front-ends without an external op-amp, and the integrated operational amplifiers provide high-impedance sensor buffering on-chip. With 7 KB Flash and 512 B RAM, the device can run a small RTOS or state-machine firmware stack. The 28-QFN (6x6) exposed-pad package keeps the board footprint under 36 mm^2, critical for wearable patches where PCB area is premium real estate.

🧩

Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Node

IoT sensor nodes using the PIC16LF1783-E/ML benefit from the nanoWatt XLP architecture that drops quiescent current into the sub-1 uA range during sleep, with 32 MHz execution available instantly on wake for sensor reads and LoRa/sub-GHz transmissions. The 12-bit ADC captures battery voltage, environmental sensors (light, humidity, temperature), and analog front-end signals, while the integrated 8-bit DAC drives comparator thresholds or analog actuator references. The EUSART, I2C, and SPI peripherals connect directly to sensors and to radios like the Microchip SAMR34 or LoRa transceivers. With 7 KB Flash the device supports small application frameworks and OTA-ready bootloaders; the 256 B EEPROM stores calibration constants and node IDs across power cycles.

💡

LED Lighting Control with PSMC

The PIC16LF1783-E/ML is well suited to LED lighting control where the integrated PSMC (Programmable Switched Mode Controller) generates high-resolution PWM with configurable dead-band and fault handling for buck, boost, or SEPIC LED driver topologies. The 32 MHz instruction cycle supports high-frequency PWM dimming above the audible band (>20 kHz), eliminating acoustic noise, while the 12-bit ADC monitors LED current via a sense resistor for closed-loop brightness regulation. Its nanoWatt XLP idle modes make it attractive for always-on smart-lighting standby controllers. The 28-QFN exposed pad provides efficient thermal dissipation for the 1 A peak LED current loops driven from the PSMC outputs.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Signal Conditioning

Industrial sensor signal conditioning modules use the PIC16LF1783-E/ML because the on-chip OPAmps buffer bridge sensors, RTDs, and 4-20 mA current loops, while the 12-bit ADC digitizes the conditioned signal for protocol conversion (HART, IO-Link, Modbus). The wide -40 C to +125 C extended temperature grade supports factory floor and outdoor cabinet deployments, and the 32 MHz CPU runs Modbus RTU or IO-Link framing in real time. The 8-bit DAC and fast comparators handle threshold detection and analog alarm outputs. The 28-QFN (6x6) package with exposed pad delivers good thermal performance for high-density DIN-rail-mounted signal conditioners.

🤖

Low-Voltage Motor Control

Low-voltage brushed DC and stepper motor control is a strong application for the PIC16LF1783-E/ML. The PSMC peripheral generates complementary PWM with dead-band control for H-bridge FET drivers, while the on-chip OPAmps and fast comparators handle back-EMF sensing and overcurrent protection without external analog ICs. The 2.5-3.3 V VDD range aligns with 2x AA or single-cell Li-ion battery packs commonly used in robotics toys, small drones, and consumer appliances. With 7 KB Flash and a 32 MHz core, field-oriented control loops and trapezoidal commutation run comfortably. The 28-QFN (6x6) package fits the compact 25-30 mm motor-controller PCBs typical in the segment.

📱

Smart Remote Control with Touch

The PIC16LF1783-E/ML is an excellent fit for smart remote controls that combine capacitive touch buttons, IR transmission, and battery-powered operation. The on-chip OPAmps drive the CVD (Charge-Voltage Discharge) touch acquisition directly on digital I/O pins, eliminating external touch ICs. The EUSART or CCP modules generate precise 38 kHz IR carrier waveforms for consumer-electronics remote protocols, while the nanoWatt XLP sleep modes keep standby current in the nanoamp range for multi-year coin-cell battery life. The 7 KB Flash holds UI state machines and protocol libraries, and the 28-QFN exposed-pad package suits thin remote enclosures where PCB height is constrained to under 1.5 mm.

Заметки по проектированию

The 28-QFN (6x6) package relies on the exposed thermal pad for heat dissipation. Solder the exposed pad to a contiguous ground copper pour with a minimum area of 50 mm^2 to keep junction temperature within safe limits at 32 MHz operation. Thermal vias (5-9 of 0.3 mm diameter) under the pad reduce thermal resistance to below 35 C/W on a standard 1 oz 4-layer PCB.

Place decoupling capacitors (100 nF X7R plus 10 uF X5R) within 2 mm of VDD pins 19 and 28, with direct vias to the inner ground plane. Place the 32.768 kHz crystal or resonator (if used for timer1) within 5 mm of the OSC pins with short traces to minimize EMI pickup. The exposed pad must be soldered for both electrical grounding and thermal dissipation; dry solder joints on the pad are a common production failure.

Do not exceed VDD maximum of 3.6 V on the PIC16LF1783-E/ML (LF variant) - the non-LF PIC16F1783 is required for 5 V designs. Configuration bits must be set to disable functions like WDT, BOR, or unused peripherals to achieve nanoWatt XLP sleep currents below 1 uA. The MCLR pin must have a 10 kohm pull-up to VDD if external reset is used; floating MCLR causes unreliable operation in noisy environments.

Route ICSPDAT and ICSPCLK (RA0/RA1) traces with ground shielding to avoid programming failures in production. Keep analog signal traces (sensor inputs to RA2/RA3/RA4) away from switching PSMC PWM outputs (RC1/RC2) to minimize ADC noise coupling. Use a star-ground topology if mixing analog and digital grounds, with the star point at the device exposed pad. Per Microchip layout guidelines, keep high-current PSMC traces short and wide (0.5 mm minimum).
