PIC16LF18424-E/SL Обзор

The Microchip PIC16LF18424-E/SL is an 8-bit PIC microcontroller built on the eXtreme Low-Power (XLP) architecture, delivering 32 MHz of computational performance with 7 KB of Flash program memory (4K x 14 words), 512 bytes of SRAM, and 256 bytes of EEPROM. Housed in a 14-pin SOIC package, the device integrates Core Independent Peripherals (CIPs) including a 12-bit ADC with Computation (ADCC), two 10-bit PWMs, a Complementary Waveform Generator (CWG), a 5-bit DAC, two comparators, an EUSART, and SPI/I2C interfaces, enabling compact mixed-signal designs with minimal external components.

An 8-bit microcontroller is a single-chip computer built around an 8-bit data path and is one of the most widely deployed categories of embedded controllers. Within the broader semiconductor taxonomy, an 8-bit MCU belongs to microcontrollers, which in turn fall under integrated circuits (ICs) used for digital control. The PIC16F family is Microchip's flagship 8-bit platform, and the LF-prefix variants (PIC16LFxxxx) are the low-voltage, low-power siblings designed for battery and energy-harvesting applications. The "F" in the part number denotes Flash program memory, and the LF prefix denotes the operating voltage family extended down to roughly 1.8V.

Key features of the PIC16LF18424-E/SL include the 12-bit ADCC that offloads averaging, filtering, and threshold-comparison tasks from the CPU, the CWG for hardware-generated complementary drive signals (useful for synchronous rectifiers and triac-like outputs), and the on-chip 5-bit DAC for setpoint generation. Together these CIPs allow the CPU to remain in sleep for longer intervals, which is the foundation of the part's XLP energy budget. The device also provides multiple clock options including a 32 MHz internal oscillator, a 31 kHz low-power oscillator, and an external clock input for designers needing tight timing.

The LF process technology node, combined with Microchip's eXtreme Low-Power design techniques, delivers typical sleep currents in the nanoampere range with full RAM retention, making the PIC16LF18424-E/SL competitive with MSP430 and low-end ARM Cortex-M0+ parts on energy-per-computation benchmarks. The 14-pin footprint allocates 12 general-purpose I/O pins (subject to peripheral multiplexing), which is sufficient for sensor hubs, user-interface panels, and simple IoT edge nodes.

Typical applications include battery-powered IoT sensor nodes, low-power remote controls, smart-metering peripherals, white-goods user interfaces, and small appliances where the MCU must wake briefly, perform ADCC-based decision making, and return to a deep-sleep state. It is also deployed in automotive body and interior sub-modules thanks to the -E (extended) -40C to +125C temperature grade and the -Q automotive-qualified sibling (PIC16F18424-E/SLVAO).

When designing with this device, reserve budget for the ICSP programming pins (PGC/PGD) and ensure MCLR is properly handled for in-circuit programming; the SOIC-14 mechanical package is straightforward to hand-prototype and rework, which is a key advantage over smaller QFN variants. The CIP-rich peripheral set means the CPU rarely needs to wake from sleep to service peripherals.

Типичное применение

PIC16LF18424-E/SL подходит для 6 применениеs: Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Nodes, White-Goods User Interface Panels, Smart-Metering Peripheral Modules, Small-Appliance Motor and Lighting Control, Low-Power Remote Controls and Key Fobs, Automotive Body and Interior Sub-Modules.

🧩

Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Nodes

The PIC16LF18424-E/SL is a strong fit for IoT sensor nodes because its nanoamp-level sleep current with full RAM retention lets the node spend most of its duty cycle in deep sleep, while the 12-bit ADCC allows autonomous threshold-based wake-ups without CPU intervention. Operated from a single CR2032 or pair of AAA cells at 1.8 V to 3.6 V, the device typically achieves single-digit microamp-hour-per-day energy budgets. Unlike 32-bit Cortex-M0+ parts, the 18424 sidesteps the need for an RTOS for simple sensor-hub firmware.

🏭

White-Goods User Interface Panels

Washing machines, dishwashers, and refrigerators benefit from the PIC16LF18424-E/SL's combination of 14-SOIC hand-reworkable packaging, 12-bit ADCC for keypad or slider sensing, and PWM channels for buzzer/LED dimming. The CWG peripheral enables timed triac-style control of indicator lamps without CPU wake-ups. Compared with discrete logic + EEPROM implementations, the 18424 reduces BOM count and PCB area while simplifying firmware upgrades via ICSP.

⚡

Smart-Metering Peripheral Modules

In electricity, water, or gas-meter peripherals, the PIC16LF18424-E/SL handles metrology-grade ADC sampling, tamper-switch input via the on-chip comparator, and wireless-module host duties via EUSART or SPI. The 256-byte EEPROM is sized for rolling interval logs, and the XLP sleep modes preserve coin-cell life across 10+ year deployment horizons. Compared with ASIC metrology front-ends, the 18424 offers firmware-upgradable feature sets at sub-$2 BoM.

💡

Small-Appliance Motor and Lighting Control

Brushless-DC fans, small pumps, and LED drivers use the PIC16LF18424-E/SL's Complementary Waveform Generator for hardware dead-band control of half-bridges, offloading switching timing from the CPU for jitter-free commutation. The 10-bit PWMs provide dimming and speed-setpoint generation, while the 5-bit DAC drives thermistor-bridge references. The 32 MHz core sustains field-oriented-control-lite loops at 8 kHz without CPU saturation.

📱

Low-Power Remote Controls and Key Fobs

The PIC16LF18424-E/SL delivers coin-cell-compatible voltage range and event-driven ADCC wake-up, making it ideal for IR or sub-GHz remote controls and key fobs. The 32 MHz burst performance is sufficient to encode Manchester or OOK packets in firmware, while deep-sleep retention holds the rolling-code counter for years. With 7 KB of Flash there is room for multi-protocol firmware variants.

🚗

Automotive Body and Interior Sub-Modules

Thanks to the -E extended temperature grade (-40C to +125C) and the automotive-grade sibling PIC16F18424-E/SLVAO, the PIC16LF18424-E/SL is deployed in non-safety body controllers such as mirror adjusters, seat-position memory, interior-lighting fade controllers, and HVAC blend-door actuators. The CWG and PWMs target LED-fade and motor-PWM demands, while LIN-transceiver-friendly EUSART enables in-vehicle networking. The 14-SOIC package is well-suited to the vibration and thermal-cycling stresses of cabin-mounted modules.

Справочные инженерные данные для PIC16LF18424-E/SL — сравнение, рекомендации по проектированию и информация о соответствии.

Руководство по выбору

Choose the PIC16LF18424-E/SL when you need an 8-bit MCU with 7 KB Flash, 32 MHz core, 12-bit ADCC, and 1.8 V minimum supply rail, all in a hand-reworkable 14-SOIC package operating across -40C to +125C. If your design runs from a 2.3-5.5 V supply and you can afford the higher minimum, the PIC16F18424-E/SL is otherwise identical silicon. For applications needing only 10-bit ADC and no CWG, the PIC16LF18324-E/SL costs less and stays in the same footprint. For industrial-only environments the PIC16LF18424-I/SL saves cost with -40C to +85C grading. All four drop-in alternatives keep the same pinout, easing PCB reuse across product variants.

Заметки по проектированию

Decouple VDD with a 100 nF X7R ceramic placed within 5 mm of pin 14, plus a bulk 1-10 uF aluminum-polymer or tantalum capacitor if the supply is shared with switching loads. The LF variant draws nanoamp-level sleep currents when Sleep mode is entered with all peripherals disabled - enable the ADC and comparators only when actively sampling to preserve battery life. Estimated: with 1 Mbyte/s SPI bursts the active current is roughly 2-3 mA at 32 MHz / 3.3 V; the same workload at 1 MHz drops to ~0.6 mA.

Route PGC (pin 12) and PGD (pin 13) traces to the ICSP header with stubs under 25 mm and 1 kohm series resistors near the MCU for production-line in-circuit programming noise immunity. MCLR (pin 3) requires a 10 kohm pull-up to VDD and a 100 nF cap to ground for noise filtering; some programming tools require 4.7-10 kohm instead of 10 kohm. Mount the ICSP header at the board edge to allow clip-attached programming without removing the microcontroller.

Do not omit the MCLR pull-up resistor or floating MCLR can cause spurious resets in noisy environments. Avoid running the EUSART at 1.5 Mbps without proper board-level impedance control - the SOIC-14 pin spacing makes 50 ohm routes difficult on two-layer boards. The 12-bit ADCC requires the FVR (Fixed Voltage Reference) to be enabled and stabilized for absolute measurements; otherwise readings drift with VDD.

When using the CWG for half-bridge drive, place the gate-driver feedback resistor within 5 mm of the MCU pin to minimize the CWG dead-band loop area. The PWM and CWG outputs can produce sharp edges (~5 ns rise time) - keep these traces short and route them on the top layer only, with a continuous ground pour below. The 32 MHz internal oscillator is accurate to about +/-1% across the -40C to +125C range, which is acceptable for UART baud rates up to 115200 without crystal calibration.
