PIC18LF24J50-I/SP Обзор

The Microchip Technology PIC18LF24J50-I/SP is a low-power, high-performance 8-bit PIC18 microcontroller with integrated full-speed USB 2.0 (12 Mbps), 16 KB of Flash program memory, 4 KB of RAM, and an enhanced instruction set, housed in a 28-pin SPDIP (Skinny Plastic DIP) through-hole package. The LF suffix indicates the low-voltage variant supporting 2.0V to 5.5V operation, while the J50 family adds deep-sleep nanoWatt XLP power management that drops quiescent current to the microamp range for battery-powered designs. The core runs up to 48 MHz internal clock (12 MIPS) with hardware multiplier, 16-bit data path, and C compiler-friendly orthogonal architecture. The integrated USB 2.0 Full-Speed transceiver with on-chip pull-up resistors eliminates external PHY components for HID, CDC, mass-storage, and vendor-class device designs. The microcontroller also includes a 10-bit ADC up to 250 ksps, multiple PWM modules, comparators, and the standard PIC18 peripheral set.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer containing a CPU core, program memory, RAM, and configurable I/O peripherals. Within the broader taxonomy, the PIC18LF24J50-I/SP belongs to the 8-bit MCU category -> RISC microcontroller -> embedded controller -> semiconductor IC. The "LF" voltage class supports 2.0V-3.6V core operation natively while remaining 5.5V tolerant on digital I/O, bridging coin-cell and Li-ion battery designs with 5V-tolerant sensors and actuators without level translators. The "J" series designation refers to the enhanced peripheral set including the on-chip USB engine and deep-sleep XLP modes, while the "50" suffix denotes the USB 2.0 Full-Speed capable variant in the family.

Key features include hardware Real-Time Clock Calendar (RTCC) with timestamps, 2 KB EEPROM emulation in Flash, Master Synchronous Serial Port (MSSP) supporting SPI and I2C, two Enhanced USART modules, charge time measurement unit (CTMU) for capacitive touch and mA-range current measurement, and configurable logic cells. The device supports self-programming via ICSP (In-Circuit Serial Programming) and runs the same MPLAB X IDE / XC8 toolchain as every other PIC18 part, simplifying firmware reuse across product lines.

Typical applications include USB HID peripherals (keyboards, mice, custom input devices), CDC virtual COM ports, low-power sensor nodes, capacitive touch interfaces, battery-powered instrumentation, and industrial control nodes. The 5V-tolerant digital I/O makes the part directly compatible with 5V sensors without external level shifters. Trade-off consideration: at full 48 MHz the LF core requires the upper end of its 2.0V-3.6V rail, while deep-sleep operation preserves nanoamp quiescent current but disables USB - power profiles must be budgeted carefully for USB-suspended battery applications.

USB HID Input Devices

The PIC18LF24J50-I/SP is a strong match for USB HID peripherals (keyboards, mice, game controllers, custom input devices) because of its integrated USB 2.0 Full-Speed transceiver with on-chip 1.5 kohm pull-up, 16 KB Flash for the HID class stack, and 4 KB RAM for HID report buffers. According to the Microchip datasheet (DS39931B), the nanoWatt XLP deep-sleep mode keeps idle current under 100 nA, which is essential for battery-powered HID input devices. The 28-SPDIP package also fits through-hole prototype sockets commonly used for keyboard matrix scanning designs. Companion part: PIC18LF2550-I/SP for designs that may need to scale up.

🖥️

USB CDC Virtual COM Port

The PIC18LF24J50-I/SP works well as a USB CDC device that emulates a serial COM port for firmware-update channels, debug logging, and point-to-point data links to a PC. Its 16 KB Flash accommodates the CDC class stack plus application code, while the 48 MHz core sustains 12 MIPS - sufficient for 115200 baud UART emulation over USB without flow-control gaps. The 5.5V-tolerant I/O pins let the part drive 5V RS-232 transceivers like the MAX232 from a 3.3V rail without level shifters. Trade-off: at full CPU load the LF core draws ~10 mA; for always-on low-duty-cycle bridges, prefer the deep-sleep mode.

📱

Capacitive Touch User Interface

The PIC18LF24J50-I/SP supports capacitive touch sensing via its on-chip CTMU (Charge Time Measurement Unit), which measures capacitance to ground with sub-pF resolution - enough for buttons, sliders, and proximity sensors. The 5.5V-tolerant digital I/O can drive LED indicators directly, eliminating external drivers in many cases. Per the Microchip datasheet (DS39931B), the CTMU + 10-bit ADC combination provides sufficient dynamic range for moisture-compensated touch designs. Companion part: MCP23017 for designs that need more GPIO for additional LED feedback channels.

⚡

Battery-Powered Sensor Nodes

The PIC18LF24J50-I/SP is well suited to battery-powered wireless sensor node edge controllers thanks to its nanoWatt XLP deep-sleep mode (sub-100 nA) and 2.0V-3.6V VDD range that draws directly from a single Li-ion or 2xAA cell. The 10-bit ADC can read battery voltage, thermistor, or external sensor outputs at 250 ksps, while the MSSP peripheral can drive SPI or I2C sensors. The USB Full-Speed engine supports both battery charging and data exchange via the same connector - useful for rechargeable sensor node designs. Trade-off: USB suspend mode and deep-sleep wakeup need careful sequencing in firmware.

🏭

Industrial Control Nodes

The PIC18LF24J50-I/SP fits industrial control point nodes (sensor concentrators, low-channel I/O modules, USB-tethered HMI panels) thanks to its -40C to +85C industrial temperature range, hardware RTCC for timestamping events, and Enhanced USART modules for RS-485 links via transceivers like the MAX3485. The 16 KB Flash accommodates Modbus RTU slave stacks or vendor-specific protocols. Per the Microchip datasheet, the device's 5.5V-tolerant I/O allows direct interfacing with 5V industrial sensors without external protection. Companion part: MAX3485 for half-duplex RS-485.

As of 2026-09-28, the PIC18LF24J50-I/SP is listed in stock at LCSC starting at USD 1.23 per unit, Mouser, and DigiKey. Distributor pricing for 1,000-piece reels typically falls in the USD 3.39 - 4.50 band depending on pack size. Always verify current stock on the XAIPART product page, since lead times on Microchip 28-SPDIP parts can extend when plastic DIP lines are cycled down.
What is the lead time for PIC18LF24J50-I/SP?
As of 2026-09-28, lead time for the PIC18LF24J50-I/SP from authorized distributors (DigiKey, Mouser, LCSC) is typically 8-12 weeks for factory-direct orders due to ongoing semiconductor capacity allocation, but distributor-on-hand stock ships within 1-3 business days. The part is marked ACTIVE in Microchip's lifecycle database, so obsolescence risk is low; however, the 28-SPDIP package has fewer second-source holders than SOIC variants.
PIC18LF24J50-I/SP vs PIC18F24J50-I/SP - what is the difference?
The PIC18LF24J50-I/SP is the low-voltage variant (LF) operating from 2.0V to 3.6V core supply with 5.5V-tolerant I/O, while the standard PIC18F24J50-I/SP runs directly from 2.0V to 3.6V across both core and I/O. For most applications the LF suffix is preferred because it offers the widest operating envelope with battery-friendly low-voltage operation. Both parts share the same 28-SPDIP pinout and the same 16 KB Flash + 4 KB RAM memory map, making them functionally drop-in compatible on the 28-pin SPDIP footprint.
Can PIC18LF24J50-I/SP be replaced by PIC18F24J50-I/SP?
Yes, in most applications the PIC18F24J50-I/SP is a drop-in replacement for the PIC18LF24J50-I/SP because both share the same 28-SPDIP pinout, identical 16 KB Flash / 4 KB RAM memory map, and the same peripheral set. The only practical difference is the I/O voltage tolerance window: LF devices support 5.5V-tolerant digital I/O at lower VDD while the F variant does not need the extra tolerance range. If your design already operates below 3.6V VDD, the substitution is transparent at the firmware level.
When should I choose PIC18LF24J50-I/SP over PIC18LF25J50-I/SP?
Choose the PIC18LF24J50-I/SP when 16 KB of Flash program memory is sufficient for your application (USB stack plus control logic). Step up to the PIC18LF25J50-I/SP (32 KB Flash) when you need extra headroom for larger USB descriptors, dual CDC/HID interfaces, or additional application logic. Both parts share the same 28-SPDIP footprint and are pin-compatible within the J50 family, so the choice is purely a memory-size decision at the BOM level.
Is the PIC18LF24J50-I/SP suitable for USB HID keyboard designs?
Yes, the PIC18LF24J50-I/SP is well suited to USB HID peripherals. It integrates a USB 2.0 Full-Speed transceiver with internal 1.5 kohm pull-up resistors, has 16 KB of Flash for the HID class driver plus scan logic, 4 KB of RAM for HID report buffers, and the Microchip USB Framework can be ported via MPLAB X. According to the Microchip datasheet, the device supports suspend/resume and the nanoWatt XLP deep-sleep mode keeps idle current low - critical for battery-powered HID input devices.
Where can I download the PIC18LF24J50-I/SP datasheet PDF?
The official PIC18LF24J50-I/SP datasheet (DS39931B family document) is available as a free PDF download from Microchip's website. Search "PIC18LF24J50" on the Microchip product page or use the direct link https://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/a/DeviceDoc/39931B.pdf. The document covers electrical characteristics, memory organization, USB module configuration, peripheral registers, and package drawings for the SPDIP variant.
Where can I find the PIC18LF24J50-I/SP pinout?
The PIC18LF24J50-I/SP uses the standard 28-pin SPDIP PIC18 pinout. Pin 1 is the MCLR/RA5 reset pin, pins 2-7 are PORTA digital I/O, pins 8-13 are PORTB I/O with interrupt-on-change, pins 14-19 are PORTC (including the USB D+/D- pins), and pins 20-27 are PORTD plus VDD/VSS pairs. The full pinout table with alternate peripheral functions is shown on page 4 of the Microchip datasheet (DS39931B) and reproduced in the XAIPART product page pinout section.
What is the difference between PIC18LF24J50-I/SP and PIC18F4550-I/P?

The PIC18LF24J50-I/SP runs on 2.0V-3.6V with 5.5V-tolerant I/O and uses the newer nanoWatt XLP sleep architecture, while the PIC18F4550-I/P runs on 4.2V-5.5V and targets legacy 5V USB designs. They are NOT pin-compatible - the 4550 is in a 40-pin DIP while the 24J50 is in a 28-pin SPDIP - so substituting requires PCB rework rather than a drop-in swap.
Is PIC18LF24J50-I/SP still in production in 2026?
Yes, as of 2026-09-28 the PIC18LF24J50-I/SP is marked ACTIVE in the Microchip lifecycle database. Microchip continues to ship the part through authorized distributors. Because the 28-SPDIP package is a through-hole variant, it serves the hobbyist, education, and industrial-prototyping markets that prefer DIP sockets for rework - so Microchip has no announced plan to discontinue the part.
What is the maximum clock speed of PIC18LF24J50-I/SP?
The PIC18LF24J50-I/SP runs at a maximum 48 MHz internal oscillator frequency, which delivers 12 MIPS instruction throughput on the PIC18 architecture. According to the Microchip datasheet (DS39931B), the device supports multiple clock sources: 8 MHz internal HFINTOSC with 4x PLL to 48 MHz, an external crystal/oscillator up to 48 MHz, and a low-frequency 31 kHz internal oscillator for low-power modes. USB Full-Speed operation requires the 48 MHz clock to be selected.
Does PIC18LF24J50-I/SP support 5V operation?
The PIC18LF24J50-I/SP supports a VDD range of 2.0V to 3.6V on the core supply, but its digital I/O pins are 5.5V tolerant. This means the MCU can interface directly with 5V sensors, buttons, and 5V logic outputs without external level shifters, even while the part itself is powered from a 3.3V rail. If your design needs true 5V core operation, consider the standard PIC18F24J50-I/SP variant in the same 28-SPDIP pinout.
What is the best cross-brand equivalent for PIC18LF24J50-I/SP?
There is no true pin-compatible cross-brand drop-in replacement for the PIC18LF24J50-I/SP because Microchip's PIC18 architecture is unique to the company. The closest functional alternatives from other manufacturers are the STMicroelectronics STM32F042 in a 20-pin TSSOP (different package, requires PCB rework), the Silicon Labs EFM8UB10F8G in QFN-20, and the NXP LPC51U68 in QFP - all require PCB redesign and firmware rewrite because of core architecture differences. Within Microchip's own portfolio, the PIC18F25J50 and PIC18F26J50 are drop-in in the same 28-SPDIP footprint with larger Flash sizes.
What are the key specifications of PIC18LF24J50-I/SP that engineers should know?
Key PIC18LF24J50-I/SP specifications for design review: 8-bit PIC18 core at 48 MHz / 12 MIPS, 16 KB Flash program memory, 4 KB RAM, integrated USB 2.0 Full-Speed transceiver with internal pull-up, 2.0V-3.6V VDD with 5.5V-tolerant I/O, 16 general-purpose I/O pins, hardware RTCC, 10-bit ADC, MSSP for SPI/I2C, two EUSART modules, CTMU for capacitive touch, nanoWatt XLP deep-sleep mode, and 28-pin SPDIP through-hole package operating from -40C to +85C. According to the Microchip datasheet (DS39931B), the combination of USB and nanoWatt XLP makes this part a popular choice for battery-powered HID peripherals.

Справочные инженерные данные для PIC18LF24J50-I/SP — сравнение, рекомендации по проектированию и информация о соответствии.

Руководство по выбору

Choose the PIC18LF24J50-I/SP when you need an 8-bit Microchip MCU with integrated USB 2.0 Full-Speed in a hobbyist-friendly 28-SPDIP through-hole package and only 16 KB of Flash is sufficient. Step up to the PIC18LF25J50-I/SP (32 KB Flash) when you need extra memory headroom for richer USB descriptors or dual CDC/HID interfaces, or to the PIC18LF26J50-I/SP (64 KB Flash) when running full USB stacks plus application code. Choose the PIC18F24J50-I/SP (F variant) instead of the LF variant when you do not need 5.5V-tolerant I/O and prefer a slightly lower-cost part. For surface-mount production, switch to the PIC18LF24J50-I/SS (SSOP-28) which uses the same silicon in a smaller footprint, but requires PCB land-pattern change. Avoid the PIC18LF14K50-I/SP unless you genuinely want the smaller 20-pin footprint - it has only 12 I/O and 768 B RAM, far less capable than the 24J50 series.

Ключевые отличия

  • Integrated USB 2.0 Full-Speed transceiver with internal pull-up (против PIC18F4550-I/P (40-pin DIP))
  • Low-voltage LF operation with 5.5V-tolerant I/O (против PIC18F24J50-I/SP)
  • nanoWatt XLP deep-sleep mode at sub-100 nA quiescent current (против PIC18F24J50-I/SP)
  • On-chip CTMU for capacitive touch and mA-range current sensing (против PIC18LF14K50-I/SP)

Заметки по проектированию

Estimated: at 48 MHz active current is approximately 10 mA typical per the Microchip datasheet family curves; deep-sleep mode drops to under 100 nA. For battery-powered HID designs that spend most of their time idle, budget for an average draw under 1 mA by gating USB suspend transitions carefully. Add a 100 nF decoupling capacitor on every VDD/VSS pair, and a 4.7 uF bulk capacitor near the USB VBUS pin to suppress inrush during plug events.

When using the 28-SPDIP package, allow standard 0.1 inch (2.54 mm) DIP socket spacing so the part can be socketed for firmware development and swapped between prototypes. Keep the 48 MHz oscillator traces short - longer than about 5 mm of trace on OSC1/OSC2 can introduce EMI and clock jitter that destabilizes USB Full-Speed signaling. If you switch to the SSOP-28 variant for production, ensure the land pattern matches JEDEC SO-28 shrink-pitch geometry exactly.

USB D+ (RC5) and D- (RC4) traces must be routed as a 90-ohm differential pair with matched length, and kept clear of switching signals to maintain USB-IF compliance. Place the USB connector within 50 mm of the MCU to minimize EMI and reflection. Per the Microchip datasheet, internal pull-up on D+ is enabled by firmware - no external 1.5 kohm resistor is required, but a 10 kohm pull-down is sometimes added for host-side software-controlled attach/detach behavior.

Do not exceed 3.6V on the VDD pin of the LF variant - the I/O pins are 5.5V-tolerant but the core supply is not. Forgetting to disable the watchdog timer in firmware is a common lockout trap; either disable WDT in configuration bits or service it regularly. Also, the ICSP pins RB6/RB7 must be pulled or driven correctly during reset to enter programming mode; floating PGC/PGD lines can cause intermittent programming failures.

Estimated: the 48 MHz system clock generates harmonics that can couple into analog inputs through the MCU substrate. For precision ADC measurements, use the device's ADC acquisition delay and average multiple samples. If your design has both digital switching and analog signals on the same chip, consider using the dedicated analog VDD/VSS pins (where present) and routing them through ferrite beads to isolate analog supply noise from digital switching transients.
