PIC24F04KL101-E/P Ulas

The Microchip Technology PIC24F04KL101-E/P is a 16-bit microcontroller from the PIC24F "KL" family featuring the nanoWatt XLP eXtreme Low Power technology, 4KB of Flash program memory (1.375K x 24), 512 bytes of RAM, and a maximum CPU speed of 32MHz delivering up to 16 MIPS, all housed in a 20-pin PDIP (DIP) through-hole package with industrial-grade -40C to +125C operating range. The -E suffix indicates the extended (industrial) temperature grade. This part is part of Microchip's cost-effective migration path from PIC18 architectures to 16-bit PIC24F performance while preserving peripheral familiarity.

What is a 16-bit microcontroller? A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU core, program memory (Flash), data memory (RAM), and programmable peripherals (I/O, timers, communication interfaces). A 16-bit MCU like the PIC24F04KL101 processes data in 16-bit words, doubling the arithmetic throughput of 8-bit MCUs while retaining low cost and ultra-low power consumption. The PIC24F sits in the hierarchy: microcontroller -> 16-bit MCU -> PIC24F family -> "KL" sub-family (low-power, low-cost, low pin count).

Key features of the PIC24F04KL101 include 4KB self-programmable Flash with table-read/table-write support, 512 bytes of SRAM, a 3-channel 16-bit timer, MSSP (Master Synchronous Serial Port) supporting both I2C and SPI, CCP (Capture/Compare/PWM), 10-bit ADC, nanoWatt XLP deep-sleep modes down to nanoampere quiescent current, and an integrated 32kHz low-power oscillator. The device operates from 1.8V to 3.6V, making it ideal for single-cell lithium or two-AA battery applications.

Architecturally, the PIC24F "KL" family uses a modified Harvard architecture with separate 16-bit instruction and 24-bit data paths, allowing single-cycle instruction fetch with single-cycle data access. The nanoWatt XLP technology incorporates multiple power-saving modes (Sleep, Idle, Doze) and a dedicated low-power Real-Time Clock/Calendar domain, drawing currents measured in nanoamps in deep-sleep with RTCC active. This combination delivers extended battery life for always-on sensor applications.

Typical applications include low-cost consumer electronics (portable media players, toys, remote controls), battery-powered medical disposables (glucose meters, inhalers), safety/security peripherals (wireless sensors, smoke detector bases), industrial sensor nodes (LoRaWAN/BLE end-nodes), and any application migrating from PIC18 to 16-bit PIC24F while keeping the same DIP-20 footprint. The through-hole 20-PDIP package is favored for hand-prototyping, education, and field-replaceable designs.

When designing with the PIC24F04KL101-E/P, place a 0.1uF decoupling capacitor as close as possible to the VDD pin and a 10uF bulk capacitor on the supply rail. Use the ICSP interface (PGECx/PGEDx pairs) for in-circuit programming and debugging, and select the correct pair for your PCB layout. Do not exceed the 3.6V absolute maximum on any pin to avoid latch-up.

Tipikal na mga Gamit

PIC24F04KL101-E/P ay nararapat para sa 6 aplikasyons: Battery-Powered Sensor Nodes, Disposable Medical Devices, Cost-Sensitive Consumer Electronics, Industrial Sensor Conditioning, Educational & Prototyping Platforms, Safety & Security Peripherals.

🧩

Battery-Powered Sensor Nodes

The PIC24F04KL101-E/P is engineered for low-duty-cycle wireless sensor nodes where the MCU spends 99% of its time asleep. Its nanoWatt XLP technology draws under 20 nA in deep-sleep with the RTCC running on the secondary 32 kHz oscillator, while a wake-up event triggers a 16 MIPS core that processes sensor data and transmits a packet before re-entering sleep. With 1.8V-3.6V VDD, the part can run directly from a single CR2032 coin cell or two AA batteries without a boost regulator. The integrated 10-bit ADC reads thermistor, photodiode, or battery-monitor signals, and the MSSP drives an SPI LoRa/BLE radio. Compared with a discrete low-power MCU + supervisor solution, the KL101 cuts BOM by 3-4 parts.

💊

Disposable Medical Devices

Handheld and disposable medical products (glucose meters, peak-flow meters, single-use inhalers) need a low-cost MCU that still offers reliable analog measurement and battery longevity. The PIC24F04KL101-E/P provides a 10-bit ADC accurate enough for sensor readout, nanoWatt XLP for shelf-life extending sleep currents, and a 20-PDIP package that simplifies hand-assembly for short production runs. The industrial -40C to +125C operating range covers refrigerated pharmaceutical storage and warm-clinic use cases. The MSSP supports I2C OLED displays commonly used in patient-facing readouts. Drop-in compatibility with the larger PIC24F04KL200-E/P (1KB RAM) gives firmware engineers a path to add more sophisticated UI without a PCB change.

📱

Cost-Sensitive Consumer Electronics

The PIC24F04KL101-E/P is the workhorse of cost-sensitive 16-bit consumer products: portable media players, electronic toys, remote controls, and personal-care appliances. Designers migrating from 8-bit PIC18 parts gain 16-bit arithmetic and 16 MIPS performance with a familiar MPLAB X toolchain and a peripheral set (MSSP, CCP, ADC) that mirrors the PIC18, shortening the learning curve. The 20-PDIP through-hole package keeps the assembly process compatible with hobbyist and small-batch hand-soldering, while the SOIC-20 and SSOP-20 siblings (PIC24F04KL101-E/SO, -E/SS) offer surface-mount options for high-volume reflow. At less than $1.20 per unit at 1,000-piece qty, the KL101 undercuts most Cortex-M0+ competitors on BOM cost.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Conditioning

Industrial 4-20 mA loop-powered transmitters, RTD/thermocouple signal conditioners, and remote I/O modules need an MCU that can operate across -40C to +125C and tolerate wide supply transients. The PIC24F04KL101-E/P's industrial temperature grade (-E suffix), 1.8V-3.6V VDD, and integrated 10-bit ADC make it a strong fit for these applications. The MSSP drives a 4-20 mA DAC or digital isolator, while the 16-bit timer captures pulse-counted flow-meter events with sub-microsecond resolution. The 20-PDIP package eases integration into legacy through-hole industrial PCBs that still dominate PLC and DCS designs, and AEC-Q100 grade is available in the -Q version for harsher automotive/industrial environments.

🎓

Educational & Prototyping Platforms

The 20-PDIP package of the PIC24F04KL101-E/P is breadboard-friendly, making it a favorite in undergraduate embedded-systems curricula and maker communities. Students get 16-bit performance and 16 MIPS throughput without leaving the familiar PIC ecosystem, while the ICSP interface allows on-the-fly flash reprogramming with a PICkit 3/4 or Snap programmer. The MPLAB X IDE, XC16 compiler, and MCC code configurator are free, and the 4KB Flash capacity supports lab projects such as I2C sensor logging, PWM motor control via CCP, and 10-bit ADC waveform capture. Educators value the 20-PDIP because damaged parts can be swapped by hand in seconds.

🎥

Safety & Security Peripherals

Smoke-detector bases, CO sensor modules, and door/window contact sensors benefit from the PIC24F04KL101-E/P's combination of XLP low-power and deterministic 16 MIPS wake-up response. The MSSP drives a SPI-connected LoRa or sub-GHz radio, the 10-bit ADC reads a photoelectric smoke chamber, and the CCP module drives a piezo alarm with precision frequency control. With 4KB Flash, the part can host simple encryption/authentication routines for security peripherals. The 20-PDIP package also enables field-replaceable modules in ceiling-mounted smoke detectors where SMT rework is impractical. Designers looking for a smaller SMD variant can use the -E/SO or -E/SS footprints on the same firmware.

Talaan ng Disenyo

Place a 0.1uF ceramic decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of each VDD pin (pins 14 and 20) and a single 10uF bulk capacitor on the main supply rail. The PIC24F04KL101-E/P draws spikes of tens of milliamps when the core wakes from deep-sleep; inadequate decoupling can cause VDD droop and spurious brown-out resets. For battery applications, add a 100k + 100nF RC filter on MCLR (pin 1) to suppress false resets during supply transients.

The PIC24F04KL101 is a 3.3V part with an absolute maximum of 3.6V on VDD. Do not power it from a 5V rail, even briefly, or via a resistive divider that can exceed 3.6V under no-load conditions. The ICSP pins (PGECx/PGEDx) are 5V-tolerant on some revisions but not all - check the datasheet revision before connecting a 5V PICkit directly. Use a level translator or a PICkit 4/Snap, both of which are 3.3V-safe by default.

Route the ICSP pair (PGEC1/PGED1 or PGEC2/PGED2) as a matched-length differential pair to the programming header, keeping them away from switching nodes such as the PWM outputs and the MSSP clock. Place a 4.7k pull-up on MCLR to VDD. If the design uses an external crystal on OSC1/OSC2, keep the crystal traces short and surround them with a ground pour to minimize EMI radiation that could disturb the ADC.
