PIC16C55-XTE/SP جائزہ

The Microchip Technology PIC16C55-XTE/SP is an 8-bit RISC microcontroller from the foundational PIC16C5X family, featuring a 12-bit instruction set and 768 bytes (512 x 12 words) of one-time-programmable (OTP) EPROM program memory in a 28-pin SPDIP (Skinny Plastic DIP) package. Operating from 3.0V to 6.25V supply rails, the device delivers up to 4 MHz maximum clock frequency with 24 bytes of general-purpose SRAM, 20 digital I/O lines, and a 33-instruction opcode set. The PIC16C55-XTE/SP is the Extended Temperature (-40C to +125C), XT (standard resonator/crystal) speed grade variant offered in tube packaging.

The PIC16C5X family represents the foundation of Microchip's mid-range 8-bit microcontroller legacy. A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer containing a CPU, RAM, non-volatile program memory, and peripheral I/O; 8-bit MCUs are used in cost-sensitive embedded applications where simple deterministic control is required. The PIC architecture uses a Harvard structure with separate program and data buses, 12-bit-wide instructions, and a fixed instruction cycle, delivering predictable 4:1 code density and deterministic interrupt latency that are valuable for low-power motor control, sensor signal conditioning, and legacy appliance designs.

Key features include a hardware 8-bit timer/counter (TMR0) with an 8-bit programmable prescaler, watchdog timer with dedicated on-chip RC oscillator, power-on reset, brown-out detection, and EPROM-based code storage. The device supports 33 single-word, single-cycle instructions with 2:1 code compression over comparable 8-bit MCUs of its era, and offers direct LED drive capability on all 20 I/O pins (sink/source up to 25 mA per pin). The fully static CMOS design eliminates minimum clock-rate constraints.

Typical applications include industrial control subsystems, automotive body electronics (non-safety-critical), appliance control boards, security panel keypads, and educational microcontroller training platforms. Because of its deterministic instruction timing and breadboard-friendly DIP package, the PIC16C55 family is widely used in university curricula and rapid prototyping environments. Modern replacements (PIC16F54, PIC16F57) provide flash memory but require software/firmware rewrites, as the OTP EPROM is not electrically re-programmable.

When designing with this OTP MCU, account for the one-time-programmable limitation: firmware revisions require re-masking or new silicon. Allocate 1-2 spare I/O pins for in-system test access, and ensure your oscillator circuit (ceramic resonator or crystal + 22 pF caps) matches the XT speed grade. The /MCLR reset pin must be tied to VDD through a 10 kohm pull-up for reliable operation. This part has been widely cloned and second-sourced, but Microchip originals remain the gold standard for longevity and documentation.

PIC16C55-XTE/SP کے لیے موزوں ہے 6 ایپلیکیشنs: Industrial Control Subsystems, Appliance Control Boards, Security Panel Keypads, Automotive Body Electronics (Non-Safety), Educational Microcontroller Training, Sensor Signal Conditioning Front-Ends.

🏭

Industrial Control Subsystems

The PIC16C55-XTE/SP is well suited for industrial control subsystems such as conveyor belt sequencers, motor starter controllers, and sensor multiplexer boards. Its 20 digital I/O lines with 25 mA sink/source capability can directly drive relays, optocouplers, and status LEDs without external drivers, while the 8-bit TMR0 with prescaler handles pulse counting from incremental encoders or flow meters. The Extended -40C to +125C temperature range tolerates harsh factory floor environments, and the 768-byte OTP EPROM is adequate for fixed-function sequencing logic. For firmware-update flexibility, consider migrating to the PIC16F54-I/P, which uses the same 28-pin SPDIP footprint and PIC16C5X instruction set but offers flash reprogrammability for field-tunable sequencing parameters.

🏭

Appliance Control Boards

The PIC16C55-XTE/SP is widely deployed in washing machine, dishwasher, microwave oven, and HVAC thermostat control boards where deterministic interrupt response and low BOM cost are priorities. The Harvard architecture executes each 12-bit instruction in a single 4-clock cycle, providing predictable timing for sensor sampling loops, while the Brown-Out Reset (BOR) protects against supply dips during compressor inrush. The 24 bytes of RAM suffice for keypad debounce, display multiplexing, and a small state machine. Because OTP EPROM is mask-programmed by Microchip at production, appliance OEMs benefit from low unit cost after NRE amortization. For new designs the flash-based PIC16F54-I/P is preferred, allowing firmware revisions via ICSP without re-masking.

🎥

Security Panel Keypads

The PIC16C55-XTE/SP serves as the scan-controller in security alarm keypads, reading 4x4 matrix key inputs while driving LED indicators and piezo buzzer feedback. The 20 I/O pins accommodate up to 16 keys via matrix scanning with 8 wires, plus 4 LED status indicators and a buzzer driver, leaving pins for zone LED expansion. Watchdog timer prevents lockup if keypad scan logic stalls, and OTP EPROM prevents firmware reverse engineering - an anti-tamper benefit in security applications. The 4 MHz clock is more than adequate for debounced 50 ms key scanning. For designs requiring encrypted firmware, the PIC16F57-I/P offers flash with code protection, but the PIC16C55-XTE/SP remains preferred where cost dominates over reprogrammability.

🚗

Automotive Body Electronics (Non-Safety)

The PIC16C55-XTE/SP appears in non-safety automotive body electronics such as HVAC blend door actuators, mirror position controllers, seat heater timers, and interior lighting dimmers. The Extended -40C to +125C temperature range is AEC-Q100-ish in spirit (though the part is not formally qualified), and the 25 mA I/O capability directly drives small relays and LED strings. Brown-Out Reset handles automotive load-dump voltage transients paired with an external TVS. OTP EPROM prevents warranty fraud via unauthorized firmware swaps. For new designs targeting formal AEC-Q100, the PIC16F54-I/P in industrial grade or higher-tier automotive PIC MCUs are recommended instead.

📱

Educational Microcontroller Training

The PIC16C55-XTE/SP is a classic teaching platform for university embedded systems courses due to its breadboard-friendly 28-pin SPDIP package, simple PIC16C5X architecture, and comprehensive documentation. Students learn RISC pipelining, fixed-cycle timing, and assembly programming using only 33 instructions - a manageable scope for first-time embedded learners. The 20 I/O pins interface directly with lab breadboard LEDs, switches, and 7-segment displays without level shifters. The MPLAB X IDE is free and the MPASM assembler handles PIC16C5X assembly. The PIC16F54-I/P has largely replaced it in curricula due to flash reprogrammability (students can iterate without UV erasure), but the PIC16C55-XTE/SP remains in legacy course materials.

🧩

Sensor Signal Conditioning Front-Ends

The PIC16C55-XTE/SP acts as a low-cost sensor front-end for thermocouple cold-junction compensation, thermistor linearization, and ratiometric bridge excitation in weighing scales and process meters. Its deterministic 1 us instruction cycle at 4 MHz (4 clocks per cycle) enables precise software-implemented sigma-delta ADC using a single comparator pin and a reference resistor, achieving 12-16 effective bits at low sample rates. The Watchdog Timer recovers from software lockup during long integration cycles. OTP EPROM stores per-sensor calibration coefficients in production. Migrating to PIC16F57-I/P enables field recalibration via ICSP for weighing scale or pH meter applications where sensor drift requires periodic adjustment.

What is the program memory size of PIC16C55-XTE/SP?
The PIC16C55-XTE/SP contains 768 bytes of OTP EPROM program memory, organized as 512 words of 12-bit instructions. According to the Microchip PIC16C5X family datasheet, the PIC16C55 specifically offers 512 words (the largest in the 16C5X base family); the 768-byte figure reported by some distributors includes configuration bits. The memory is one-time-programmable and not electrically erasable.
What supply voltage does PIC16C55-XTE/SP require?
The PIC16C55-XTE/SP operates from a single 3.0 V to 6.25 V DC supply. Typical industrial designs run it at 5.0 V for compatibility with TTL-level peripherals; battery-powered systems can run at 3.3 V with reduced maximum oscillator frequency. The Brown-Out Reset (BOR) circuitry must be enabled in the configuration word to detect voltage drops during operation.
Where can I buy PIC16C55-XTE/SP online?
As of 2026-09-16, the PIC16C55-XTE/SP is in stock at LCSC Electronics at $1.716 in tube packaging, and historically stocked at Mouser, DigiKey, and Microchip Direct. Because the part is marked Not Recommended for New Designs (NRND), distributors may have limited stock; for new designs Microchip recommends migrating to the flash-based PIC16F54 or PIC16F57 in compatible SPDIP packages.
What is the lead time for PIC16C55-XTE/SP orders?
As of 2026-09-16, PIC16C55-XTE/SP typically ships from LCSC within 3-7 business days for in-stock quantities. Mouser and DigiKey reported distributor stock in earlier listings; lead times for legacy Microchip parts generally run 6-10 weeks when stock is depleted due to the NRND lifecycle status and ongoing semiconductor supply constraints.
What is the difference between PIC16C55-XTE/SP and PIC16C55-XT/P?
The PIC16C55-XTE/SP and PIC16C55-XT/P share the same PIC16C55 die, 28-pin SPDIP package, 4 MHz XT speed grade, and 768-byte OTP EPROM. The only difference is operating temperature range: the XTE/SP variant specifies -40C to +125C (Extended), while the XT/P variant is the commercial/industrial grade rated 0C to +70C. For drop-in replacement on the same PCB footprint, both are interchangeable when temperature range permits.
What is the difference between PIC16C55-XTE/SP and PIC16F54-I/P?
The PIC16C55-XTE/SP uses 768 bytes of OTP EPROM (one-time programmable) and runs at 4 MHz, while the PIC16F54-I/P uses 768 bytes of flash memory (re-programmable in-circuit) and runs at 20 MHz. Both share the 28-pin SPDIP footprint, PIC16C5X instruction set, and 12 I/O pins. The PIC16F54-I/P is the modern replacement offering design flexibility via flash; the PIC16C55-XTE/SP is for legacy systems where the OTP mask is already established.
When should I choose PIC16C55-XTE/SP over a flash MCU?
Choose PIC16C55-XTE/SP when the firmware is fully validated and the OTP mask has been pre-programmed by Microchip, when cost-per-unit at high volume outweighs development expense, or when designing into legacy systems that have already qualified this exact part. For new designs, the flash-based PIC16F54 or PIC16F57 are recommended; they offer in-circuit reprogrammability, faster clock speeds, and a clear migration path within the same package.
What is the best drop-in replacement for PIC16C55-XTE/SP?
The best drop-in replacement for PIC16C55-XTE/SP is the PIC16C55-XTE/P (same -40C to +125C extended temp, same 28-pin SPDIP, same OTP EPROM, same instruction set), differing only in tube vs tube packaging. The flash-based PIC16F54-I/P and PIC16F57-I/P also share the same 28-pin SPDIP footprint and PIC16C5X instruction set, but require firmware porting because flash differs from OTP and the F-series parts run at 20 MHz vs 4 MHz.
Can PIC16F54-I/P replace PIC16C55-XTE/SP?
Yes, the PIC16F54-I/P can serve as a drop-in replacement for PIC16C55-XTE/SP on the same 28-pin SPDIP footprint. Both use the same 12-bit PIC16C5X instruction set and 33 instructions. The key differences are: PIC16F54-I/P uses flash memory (re-programmable), runs at 20 MHz vs 4 MHz, has 25 bytes RAM vs 24 bytes, and includes enhanced peripherals. Firmware must be recompiled but the assembly code is largely portable.
Where can I download PIC16C55-XTE/SP datasheet PDF?
The official Microchip PIC16C55 datasheet (document number 30413F, covering the PIC16C5X family) is available as a free PDF download at https://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/DeviceDoc/30413F.pdf. The datasheet contains electrical characteristics, timing diagrams, instruction set reference, memory maps, and programming specifications for the entire PIC16C5X family including PIC16C55.
Where can I find PIC16C55-XTE/SP pinout?
The PIC16C55-XTE/SP pinout for the 28-pin SPDIP package is documented on page 4 of the Microchip datasheet (document 30413F). Pin 1 is RA2, pin 2 is RA3, pin 8 is VSS (ground), pin 20 is VDD (positive supply), pin 21 is /MCLR (master clear reset), pins 27-28 are OSC1/OSC2 (crystal oscillator), and pins 6-7, 9-11, 22-26 form the RB and RC port pins. The pinout is shared with PIC16F54, PIC16F57, PIC16C54, and PIC16C56.
Is PIC16C55-XTE/SP RoHS compliant?
No, the PIC16C55-XTE/SP in 28-pin SPDIP package is NOT RoHS compliant because the PDIP package uses tin-lead (SnPb) finish. The part does comply with REACH regulations. For RoHS-compliant designs, Microchip offers the PIC16F54-I/P and PIC16F57-I/P in Pb-free SPDIP or SOIC packages with identical functionality and pin compatibility.
What is the maximum I/O current of PIC16C55-XTE/SP?
Each of the 20 I/O pins on the PIC16C55-XTE/SP can sink or source up to 25 mA directly, enabling direct LED drive without driver transistors. The total package dissipation must not exceed 800 mW. This high-current I/O capability is a hallmark of the PIC16C5X family and simplifies designs driving relays, LEDs, and small solenoids directly from the MCU pins.
What programmer is needed for PIC16C55-XTE/SP?
The PIC16C55-XTE/SP (OTP EPROM) requires a parallel programmer such as the Microchip MPLAB PM3 Universal Device Programmer or the legacy PRO MATE II. In-circuit serial programming (ICSP) is not available on the PIC16C5X family because OTP EPROM cannot be erased. The PM3 programs the OTP memory once and verifies the contents; engineering samples use the windowed CERDIP PIC16C55/JW variant for UV erasure during development.
What tools are compatible with PIC16C55-XTE/SP development?
The PIC16C55-XTE/SP is supported by Microchip's MPLAB X IDE and the older MPLAB 8 IDE, using the MPASM assembler for PIC16C5X assembly language development. The XC8 compiler in non-extended mode also targets PIC16C5X. For C programmers, the HI-TECH C compiler for PIC16C5X is available (legacy). The MPLAB SIM simulator allows instruction-level emulation without silicon. For programming, MPLAB PM3, PRO MATE II, or compatible third-party programmers are required.

انتخاب کی گائیڈ

Choose PIC16C55-XTE/SP when the design is a mature, fixed-function product with established firmware that will not require field updates, when operating temperatures exceed 85C (industrial/automotive), and when lowest possible per-unit cost at high volume outweighs development expense. Choose PIC16C55-XT/P if the commercial 0C to +70C temperature range is sufficient. For new designs, the PIC16F54-I/P is the strongly preferred alternative - same 28-pin SPDIP footprint, same PIC16C5X instruction set, flash reprogrammability, 20 MHz clock, and Pb-free/RoHS-compliant. The PIC16C55A-20I/SP is appropriate when 20 MHz is needed but OTP is acceptable. All six parts share the same 28-pin SPDIP land pattern, allowing PCB reuse across generations.

ڈیزائن نوٹس

The /MCLR pin (pin 4) MUST be tied to VDD through a 10 kohm pull-up resistor - leaving it floating causes intermittent resets and unpredictable behavior. The PIC16C55-XTE/SP does not have an internal weak pull-up on /MCLR like newer PIC MCUs. Additionally, do not place a decoupling capacitor larger than 0.1 uF directly on /MCLR; large capacitance slows the VDD rise time and prevents proper Power-On Reset. Use a 100 nF decoupling cap on VDD within 5 mm of the pin.

Place the 4 MHz crystal or ceramic resonator (with 22 pF load capacitors on each leg) within 5 mm of pins 15 (OSC1) and 16 (OSC2). Keep oscillator traces short and away from high-current switching traces to prevent injection of clock noise. Ground the crystal can to VSS via a short trace. For board layouts exceeding 5 cm square, use a ground plane to stabilize the oscillator and reduce EMI. The XT speed grade supports 4 MHz; using the HS grade crystal topology with this part may cause oscillator failure - stay within the XT specification.

Estimated power budget: PIC16C55-XTE/SP draws ~2 mA active at 4 MHz/5V and ~4 uA in SLEEP mode. At 5V supply the I/O pin current of 25 mA per pin allows direct LED drive without transistors - useful for status indicators. Brown-Out Reset (BOR) is enabled via the configuration word to protect against VDD drops below ~4V; ensure BOR is enabled for safety-critical or industrial applications. Total package dissipation must remain below 800 mW - simultaneous high-current sink on multiple pins can approach this limit.

The 768-byte OTP EPROM can be programmed ONLY ONCE - there is no electrical erase. Use the PIC16C55/JW windowed CERDIP variant during development for UV-erasable iterations, then transition to PIC16C55-XTE/SP for production OTP mask programming. Verify all firmware logic on the JW variant before committing to a mask run; mask NRE charges apply. Code-protect (CP) fuse can be set to prevent firmware readback via the programmer, providing a basic anti-tamper measure.
