PIC16F630-E/ST Tóm tắt

The Microchip Technology PIC16F630-E/ST is a 14-pin Flash-based 8-bit CMOS microcontroller from the PIC16F family, featuring 1.75 KB of Flash program memory, 64 bytes of SRAM, and 128 bytes of EEPROM in a TSSOP-14 (ST) surface-mount package. It executes instructions in a 200 ns instruction cycle at 20 MHz clock speed, supports 11 digital I/O pins, one analog comparator, and operates across an extended industrial temperature range of -40C to +125C. The supply voltage range is 2.0 V to 5.5 V, making it suitable for both 3.3 V and 5 V designs.

An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU, memory, and peripherals around an 8-bit data path, executing one byte per instruction cycle. Within the hierarchy MCU -> microcontroller -> embedded controller -> semiconductor, the PIC16F630 belongs to the mid-range PIC16 family, which sits between baseline (PIC10/12/14) and enhanced mid-range (PIC16F1xxx) cores. This positioning makes it ideal for cost-sensitive, deterministic control tasks rather than complex protocol stacks or graphics processing.

Key features include nanoWatt power management for low-power sleep modes (typical standby current below 1 uA), an internal 4 MHz oscillator (calibrated to +/-1%), a precision 10-bit ADC emulation via the comparator, and an 8-bit timer/counter (TMR0) plus a watchdog timer. The device supports in-circuit serial programming (ICSP) via two pins, enabling field firmware updates without removing the part from the board.

Architecturally, the PIC16F630 uses a Harvard RISC core with 35 single-word instructions, separate program and data buses, and a hardware stack that supports up to 8 subroutine levels. This RISC design yields deterministic instruction timing, which is critical for real-time control loops in motor, lighting, and sensor applications where jitter cannot be tolerated.

Typical applications include consumer appliance control, sensor signal conditioning, LED lighting drivers, remote-control transmitters, battery-powered monitoring nodes, and simple logic-replacement glue logic on mixed-signal boards. Its 14-pin footprint and 11 I/O lines balance capability with PCB real estate, making it a workhorse for low-pin-count embedded designs.

When designing with this device, place a 0.1 uF decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of VDD and tie the MCLR pin to VDD through a 10 kohm resistor unless an external reset is needed. Avoid leaving unused I/O pins floating - configure them as outputs to minimize supply-current creep.

🚗

Automotive Body Electronics

The PIC16F630-E/ST handles simple body-control tasks such as seat-position memory, mirror-fold actuators, and LED DRL sequencing in non-safety-critical subsystems. The -40C to +125C extended grade tolerates under-hood and dashboard thermal environments. Its 1.75 KB Flash fits state-machine firmware for one-time learning of seat positions, while the 11 I/O pins drive direction relays and sense limit switches. For full AEC-Q100 automotive qualification, the PIC16F630-E/ST is typically used in non-safety zones; safety-critical designs should migrate to PIC16F18313-Q1.

🔧

Logic Replacement / Glue Logic

The PIC16F630-E/ST is an economical choice for replacing discrete 74HC CMOS logic gates with programmable I/O mapping, sequence timing, and edge-triggered interrupts. Engineers use it to consolidate multiple 555 timers, flip-flops, and AND/OR gates into a single 14-pin device. The 200 ns instruction cycle handles sub-microsecond event timing, while the in-system programming (ICSP) interface allows firmware updates during board bring-up. Its small TSSOP-14 footprint fits drop-in for 74HC00 SOIC-14 patterns with a redesigned land pattern.

🧩

Smart Home Sensor Hub

The PIC16F630-E/ST functions as a peripheral MCU inside smart-home sensor hubs (door/window contact, motion, water-leak detectors) reporting to a central Zigbee or Thread gateway. Its sub-1 uA sleep current supports 5-10 year coin-cell operation. The 11 I/O pins connect a PIR sensor, reed switch, tamper switch, and a status LED without multiplexing. The internal 4 MHz oscillator removes the external crystal BOM cost, critical for sub-$5 retail sensor pricing.

Ghi chú thiết kế

Place a 0.1 uF ceramic decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of the VDD pin (pin 1) with a short trace directly to the VSS pin (pin 14). For designs with VDD above 4.5 V and clock above 10 MHz, add a 10 uF bulk capacitor near the IC. The PIC16F630-E/ST draws 1-2 mA active at 20 MHz, so a regulated LDO (e.g., MCP1700) supplying 100 mA provides ample headroom. Tie the MCLR pin (pin 4) to VDD through a 10 kohm pull-up to enable normal operation; for hardware reset, use a momentary switch to ground.

Avoid leaving unused I/O pins floating - this can cause oscillation and increase supply current by up to 100 uA per pin. Configure unused pins as outputs (set TRIS bit to 0 and clear the LAT bit) in firmware, or use the CONFIG register's MCLRE_OFF to repurpose pin 4 as RA3. Additionally, do not enable the WDT (watchdog timer) in production firmware unless you implement a proper CLRWDT sequence, otherwise unexpected resets will occur during long blocking operations.

Route the ICSP signals (ICSPCLK and ICSPDAT, shared with PORTA) away from high-frequency switching nodes such as relay coils, TRIAC outputs, or PWM-driven LEDs. The TSSOP-14 pin pitch of 0.65 mm requires 0.4 mm trace width with 0.2 mm clearance per IPC-2222 Class 2; for hand-soldered prototypes use 0.5 mm traces with 0.25 mm clearance to ease rework. Place a 6-pin ICSP header (0.1 inch pitch, VDD/VSS/ICSPCLK/ICSPDAT/MCLR optional) at the board edge for programming access.

When using the internal 4 MHz oscillator with the PLL or external clock above 10 MHz, ensure the OSC2/CLKOUT pin (pin 3) trace length is kept below 25 mm to avoid ringing. If the application uses RC4/RC5 for high-speed digital I/O such as SPI at 5 MHz, add a 22 ohm series resistor near the source pin to dampen reflections on long traces. For analog comparator input on RC0/RC1 (CIN+/CIN-), route the input trace in parallel with VSS (ground) and avoid running it adjacent to switching signals to minimize cross-talk into the comparator reference.
