MPN: PIC18LF25K80-I/SP ✓ Hoạt độngPIC18LF25K80-I/SP Tóm tắt
A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU, memory (Flash/RAM/EEPROM) and peripherals. The PIC18LF25K80 belongs to the 8-bit PIC family, which sits inside the broader hierarchy of microcontrollers -> embedded processors -> semiconductor ICs. The "LF" prefix denotes the low-voltage Flash variant, while "18K80" identifies the specific sub-family with CAN, XLP and ADC12 features.
Key features include 32 KB (16K × 16) self-programmable Flash, 4 KB SRAM, 1 KB EEPROM, 64 MHz internal oscillator, 36 digital I/O, two MSSP (SPI/I2C), two ECAN, one 12-bit ADC up to 8 channels at 100 ksps, three 16-bit timers, four 8-bit timers and a Charge Time Measurement Unit (CTMU) for capacitive touch or precise time measurement. The instruction set is PIC18 with C-optimised architecture and 16-bit instructions for compact code density.
Architecturally the PIC18LF25K80 uses a RISC-style Harvard architecture with 8-bit data path and 16-bit instructions, an integrated 16-level hardware stack, and an enhanced instruction set that includes hardware multiply and direct bit manipulation. The XLP nanoWatt technology provides multiple low-power modes (Run, Idle, Sleep, RTCC) with nanowatt-level standby, and the integrated ECAN module supports CAN 2.0B active at 1 Mbit/s for automotive/industrial networking.
Typical applications include CAN-node sensor interfaces, battery-powered metering, industrial automation nodes, capacitive touch user interfaces, HVAC fan/valve controllers, automotive body ECUs, and medical handheld devices where low standby current extends battery life from months to years. The 1.8 V minimum VDD also makes it suitable for direct operation from single-cell lithium or two AA cells.
When designing with this device, ensure that decoupling (100 nF + 10 µF) is placed within 5 mm of VDD pins, and that MCLR is tied through a 10 kΩ pull-up to VDD to allow reliable in-circuit serial programming (ICSP). For capacitive touch applications, allocate at least two adjacent pins per channel and use the CTMU with a guard ring to improve noise immunity.

Ứng dụng tiêu biểu
PIC18LF25K80-I/SP phù hợp cho 6 Áp dụngs: CAN-Node Sensor Interface, Battery-Powered Smart Meter, Capacitive Touch User Interface, Automotive Body ECU, HVAC Fan / Valve Controller, Medical Handheld Device.
CAN-Node Sensor Interface
The PIC18LF25K80-I/SP's integrated ECAN 2.0B controller and 1.8 V minimum VDD make it well suited to low-power CAN sensor nodes on industrial or building-automation buses. The hardware CAN peripheral supports 1 Mbit/s with 8 acceptance filters, eliminating the external MCP2515 + MCP2551 pair that 8-bit MCUs without CAN typically require. Combined with the 12-bit ADC at 100 ksps and 20 nA sleep current, the device can run from 2x AA cells for several years while periodically waking to transmit a CAN frame. Place the device between the bus transceiver and sensor front-end, using the ECAN interrupt to wake from Sleep and the ADC to digitise the sensor. The CTMU can also measure small capacitance changes for proximity-sensing overlays.

Battery-Powered Smart Meter
The PIC18LF25K80-I/SP's nanoWatt XLP technology (20 nA typical sleep current, <100 nA RTCC) and 1.8 V minimum VDD make it ideal for battery-powered metering applications such as gas, water or heat meters that must operate for 10+ years on a single primary cell. The integrated LCD segment driver option (per K80 family variants) and 32 KB Flash comfortably fit metering firmware including tamper detection and rolling-log storage in 4 KB RAM + 1 KB EEPROM. Use Sleep + RTCC for the meter's idle state, wake on a button or Hall-sensor interrupt, then run the ADC and ECAN to report. Power dissipation in Sleep is dominated by leakage; estimated battery life at 1 wake/minute exceeds 10 years with a 2.4 Ah LiSOCl2 cell.

Capacitive Touch User Interface
The PIC18LF25K80-I/SP integrates a CTMU (Charge Time Measurement Unit) that, paired with the 12-bit ADC, enables reliable capacitive touch sensing on up to 16 keys without an external touch IC. The CTMU produces a precise constant-current source charge that the ADC measures as a discharge-time delta, yielding sub-pF resolution suitable for proximity-sensing overlays, slider strips and rotary encoders through thin glass or plastic. Use the CTMU wake-on-touch feature with a guard ring to suppress moisture false-triggers, and put the MCU in nanoWatt Sleep between touches. The 32 KB Flash and 4 KB RAM are sufficient for mTouch firmware libraries and button-remap logic.

Automotive Body ECU
The PIC18LF25K80-I/SP's hardware ECAN, wide -40 C to +125 C extended-grade variants in the K80 family, and 32 KB Flash make it a low-cost node controller for non-safety automotive body functions such as seat controllers, mirror modules, lighting clusters and climate-zone actuators. The ECAN bus supports body-CAN at 500 kbit/s, and the 12-bit ADC handles potentiometer and thermistor inputs. Note: the -I/SP industrial-grade part (-40 C to +85 C) is rated only for non-automotive deployment; the -E/SP extended or automotive AEC-Q100 qualified PIC18F25K80-I/SP-Q variants are required for under-hood use. The CTMU also enables touch-button door handles in the same family.

HVAC Fan / Valve Controller
The PIC18LF25K80-I/SP's 36 digital I/O and PWM outputs make it well matched to small HVAC controllers that drive 3-speed fans, thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) and zone dampers in 24 V building-automation systems. The ADC reads NTC thermistor pipes; the ECAN or MSSP (I2C) links to a central BMS controller; the timers drive zero-cross TRIAC commutation at 50/60 Hz. Operating at 3.3 V from a switching buck converter, the device draws ~5 mA active, and the XLP Sleep mode (<1 µA) extends battery life on wireless TRV variants. The 1 KB EEPROM stores commissioning parameters and seasonal setpoints.

Medical Handheld Device
The PIC18LF25K80-I/SP's 1.8 V minimum VDD, sub-µA Sleep current, and IEC 60730 Class B software-support library from Microchip make it suitable for low-cost medical handhelds such as pulse-oximeter probes, peak-flow meters, and single-use diagnostic cartridges. The 12-bit ADC and CTMU enable optical or impedance sensor readouts, while the ECAN/UART links to a host display. The 32 KB Flash is sufficient for IEC 60730 self-test routines, and the XLP modes let the device idle for years on a coin battery, waking only on a button press. Note: full IEC 60601 medical certification is system-level; the PIC18LF25K80-I/SP is rated for industrial temperature only.

Ghi chú thiết kế
The PIC18LF25K80-I/SP achieves <1 µA Sleep current only when peripherals are disabled in the PMD register and the ADC, comparators and CVREF are turned off. Estimated: with RTCC enabled at 32 kHz, Sleep current rises to ~1.1 µA; with CTMU on it rises to ~3 µA. For 10-year battery life, budget <500 nA average with 2.4 Ah LiSOCl2.
Place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of each VDD pin and a bulk 10 µF ceramic near the IC. For through-hole SPDIP-28 prototypes, add a ground plane on the bottom layer and keep high-speed ECAN traces (CANTX/CANRX) under 25 mm or use a twisted pair to the transceiver. Estimated loop inductance for a 28-pin DIP ground lead is ~10 nH, which can couple ADC noise without proper decoupling.
Do not leave MCLR floating - tie it through a 10 kΩ pull-up to VDD, or in-circuit serial programming (ICSP) will be unreliable. The LF variant's 1.8 V brown-out reset must be enabled (BOREN=1, BORV=1) to prevent Flash corruption below the 1.8 V minimum VDD. The ICSP pins (RB6/PGC, RB7/PGD) are not 5 V tolerant on the LF variant - do not drive them from a 5 V programmer.
Route the ECAN CANTX and CANRX differential pair to the transceiver with 100 Ω differential impedance and keep them away from switching nodes. The MCU's CTMU current source is sensitive to digital switching noise on adjacent pins - place CTMU-capable pins (RBx) physically isolated from PWM and SPI outputs. A guard ring tied to a quiet analog ground around CTMU touch electrodes reduces false wake-ups in moist environments.
