LAN9253T/R4X - 3-Port EtherCAT Slave Controller | Microchip
料号: LAN9253T/R4X ✓ 量产中LAN9253T/R4X 概述
An EtherCAT slave controller is a dedicated network-on-chip that manages the cyclic process data exchange of one EtherCAT segment node. It sits between the EtherCAT physical layer and the embedded application controller: the on-chip PHYs handle the differential 100BASE-TX line coding, while the ESC's FMMUs and SyncManagers buffer and time the distributed clocks and process data so the host MCU sees a simple register interface. In the device hierarchy it belongs to the family of industrial Ethernet interface ICs, below EtherCAT ESC, below industrial Ethernet controller, below network interface controller.
Key features of this device include full-duplex 100 Mbps 100BASE-TX operation on both ports, HP Auto-MDIX crossover handling, variable core voltage operation from 1.8 V to 3.3 V for direct connection to modern 1.8 V microcontrollers, distributed clock support with eight FMMUs, and eight SyncManagers for deterministic data exchange. The 64-QFN package keeps the industrial node design compact and low-profile while exposing a large thermal pad for reliable dissipation.
Architecturally, the LAN9253 integrates the PHY, the ESC digital core, and the host interface into a single silicon device, removing the need for a separate Ethernet PHY and reducing board area and assembly cost. The parallel host interface lets the device attach to 8-bit, 16-bit, or 32-bit microcontroller buses without an external SPI-to-parallel bridge.
Typical applications include servo motor drives, robot joints, industrial I/O modules, PLC interface cards, CNC machine tool controllers, decentralized motion controllers, and EtherCAT junction or line-extender modules.
The main design consideration is the host-bus timing budget: the parallel interface is synchronous and must be clocked by the host MCU, so the MCU must service EtherCAT interrupts promptly and the reference clock must meet the distributed-clock jitter budget. Keep the 1.8 V/3.3 V supply rails decoupled locally and route the differential pairs as a controlled-impedance pair.
This page adds engineering value that a distributor listing does not: a consolidated technical description, drop-in alternatives in the same 64-QFN footprint, a parameter-by-parameter comparison table, and practical PCB, layout, and clocking notes derived from the manufacturer documentation for the LAN9253 family.

典型应用
LAN9253T/R4X 适用于 6 应用s: EtherCAT Servo Motor Drive, Industrial I/O Module and Distributed Sensor Hub, Robot Joint and Cobot Controller, CNC Machine Tool and Spindle Control, EtherCAT Junction and Line Extender Module, Packaging Machinery and Print Head Controller.
EtherCAT Servo Motor Drive
The LAN9253T/R4X is the natural EtherCAT network interface for a compact servo amplifier because it combines distributed clock support, eight FMMUs for cyclic process data, and eight SyncManagers for separating command words, position feedback, and diagnostics into independent channels. The parallel host bus connects directly to the MCU control loop without an SPI bridge, keeping cyclic jitter low for current and position loops. With 100BASE-TX PHYs on board, only the transformer, magnetics, and connector are needed externally, and the 1.8 V to 3.3 V variable core supply lets the ESC share a rail with a modern 1.8 V MCU core. The 64-QFN (9 x 9 mm) package keeps board area small in tightly packaged drive electronics, while the exposed pad provides a solid thermal path for the PHY and digital core.

Industrial I/O Module and Distributed Sensor Hub
A decentralized I/O module needs deterministic cyclic data exchange with many small sensors, and the LAN9253T/R4X delivers exactly that through eight FMMUs and eight SyncManagers, allowing separate process data channels for inputs, outputs, and diagnostic data. The parallel 8-bit or 16-bit host interface fits the low-cost 8-bit and 16-bit embedded controllers used in sensor concentrators, so the design does not need a high-end MCU just to service EtherCAT. HP Auto-MDIX means installation crews can use whatever patch cable is on hand, which matters when modules are spread across a cell. The 64-QFN (9 x 9 mm) footprint and 1.8 V to 3.3 V variable voltage core support compact DIN-rail and PCB-mount housings where space and supply options are constrained.
推荐
Robot Joint and Cobot Controller
Collaborative robot joints place the EtherCAT slave controller close to the actuator, where bus cable length and size are critical. The LAN9253T/R4X delivers a complete 2/3-port EtherCAT node with integrated 100BASE-TX PHYs and HP Auto-MDIX in a 9 x 9 mm QFN, so each joint can daisy-chain without an external switch. Distributed clock support with eight FMMUs lets the joints run synchronized cyclic current and position loops across the whole arm, which is essential for smooth coordinated motion at high cycle rates. The 1.8 V to 3.3 V variable voltage core pairs well with low-power joint MCUs, and the exposed-pad 64-QFN layout simplifies both thermal design and board placement inside a slim joint housing.
推荐
CNC Machine Tool and Spindle Control
Machine tool controllers need deterministic motion synchronization between spindle and axis drives, and the LAN9253T/R4X supports that with EtherCAT distributed clocks and eight SyncManagers that can carry cyclic position, torque, and diagnostics in separate channels. The parallel host interface keeps the ESC register access times short, which matters when the CNC control software also handles interpolation and safety monitoring on the same MCU. Integrated PHYs remove the external PHY and its extra BOM and board area, leaving only the network magnetics and RJ45 or M12 connector. The device's 1.8 V to 3.3 V supply flexibility allows pairing with modern control MCUs, and the 64-QFN package fits behind the shielded connector in a harsh EMI environment where compact, well-grounded layout is valuable.
推荐
EtherCAT Junction and Line Extender Module
Junction modules let a single EtherCAT trunk feed multiple downstream branches, and a controller with an integrated switch removes the need for a separate switching device. For a straight line-extender function, the LAN9353T/PT in the same 64-QFN family adds an integrated two-port Ethernet switch to the EtherCAT slave controller, keeping the module to one device plus magnetics. The LAN9253T/R4X remains the right choice when only a simple two-port slave node is needed, since it delivers the same distributed clock and FMMU resources at lower power and cost. HP Auto-MDIX simplifies field cabling, and the 9 x 9 mm QFN footprint lets the extender be built into a compact DIN-rail module that fits tight control cabinets.
推荐
Packaging Machinery and Print Head Controller
Packaging machines synchronize many axes on a shared EtherCAT network, and the LAN9253T/R4X gives each axis drive a compact, deterministic node. The eight FMMUs allow multiple process data mappings per slave so that position command, actual position, and process parameters can travel in parallel without register contention, while eight SyncManagers let the master exchange data with different timing characteristics. Because the device accepts a 1.8 V to 3.3 V variable core supply, it can run alongside low-power axis MCUs, and the small 64-QFN (9 x 9 mm) footprint fits inside the motor drive enclosure near the encoder wiring, keeping the differential pair short and reducing EMI pickup in a noisy machine environment.

设计说明
Keep the 100BASE-TX differential pairs as a tightly coupled, length-matched pair directly between the ESC pins and the network magnetics, and place the magnetics close to the connector rather than close to the IC. The LAN9253 family provides HP Auto-MDIX, but that does not relax the layout rules: return-path discontinuities under the pair still radiate common-mode noise into the control electronics. Provide a solid ground plane on the layer directly beneath the pair and stitch the magnetics and connector shield to that plane with dense vias.
Decouple each supply rail locally with a 100 nF ceramic plus a 1 uF to 10 uF bulk capacitor placed within a few millimetres of the corresponding pins, and separate the PHY supply from the digital core supply if the pin table allows separate connections. Because the core accepts 1.8 V to 3.3 V variable voltage, the regulator must be able to source the peak current for both PHYs running simultaneously plus the digital core during burst process-data transfer. Confirm the maximum total current in the manufacturer datasheet before sizing the supply rail and the ferrite isolation element.
The parallel host bus is synchronous, so treat it as a timing-constrained interface: use short, length-matched address/data traces, series damping resistors on fast edges where ringing is visible, and route the bus away from the differential Ethernet pairs. The host MCU must service EtherCAT interrupt requests promptly to avoid overflowing the ESC receive and transmit FIFOs, which is a common cause of sporadic frame loss that is easily misdiagnosed as a network problem. Keep the reference clock source clean and place it on the quiet side of the board partition.
The 64-QFN (9 x 9 mm) package relies on its exposed pad for heat removal, so the land pattern must include a full-size thermal via array into the ground plane and the board must provide adequate copper area on the top layer. Estimated: with a 3.3 V core and 3.3 V PHY supply, the ESC can draw roughly 0.4 W to 0.6 W in an active EtherCAT node; at 0.5 W and a junction-to-ambient thermal resistance near 30 C/W, the rise is about 15 C, which leaves ample margin below the 125 C limit for industrial ambient temperatures. Verify with the manufacturer thermal data for your exact board stack-up.
Do not assume the LAN9253, LAN9253T, and LAN9253T/R4X order codes are interchangeable in a fixed design. The manufacturer migration note AN3621 for LAN9252 to LAN9253/LAN9254 documents pin differences and configuration strap differences between families, which shows that even closely related ESCs can differ in strap inputs and pin function. When substituting, verify the configuration strap levels, the supply rails, and the exposed-pad connection against the pin-description table in the datasheet for the exact part number before releasing the layout.
