AL1322 - IO-Link Master with EtherNet/IP, 8-Port IP67 | ifm

The ifm efector AL1322 is an IO-Link master with EtherNet/IP interface designed for field deployment in harsh industrial environments. Housed in a robust IP67-rated enclosure with M12x1 connectors, the AL1322 supports up to eight IO-Link devices (sensors, valves, binary I/O modules, and actuators), providing reliable transmission of machine data, process parameters, and diagnostic data to the controller. The unit separates the automation network from the IT network and includes a separate MQTT JSON interface, making it suitable for Industry 4.0 and IIoT architectures. An IO-Link master is a gateway device that bridges IO-Link point-to-point communication (per IEC 61131-9) with higher-level industrial fieldbuses such as EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, or EtherCAT. Positioned in the industrial communication hierarchy, IO-Link masters sit below PLCs and SCADA systems and above the sensor/actuator layer. The AL1322 specifically targets EtherNet/IP-based control systems, providing deterministic industrial Ethernet connectivity while exposing IO-Link's bidirectional diagnostics and digital process data. Key features include support for eight IO-Link ports (B-port class on some channels for actuator auxiliary power), EtherNet/IP and MQTT JSON interfaces, and an IP67-rated housing for direct cabinet-free mounting in washdown zones. The dual-port Ethernet switch (DLR capability) supports ring redundancy, while the separate MQTT JSON interface enables cloud/edge analytics without disrupting the real-time control network. The unit operates on M12 power and uses M12 A-coded and D-coded connectors for Ethernet, simplifying field wiring. Typical applications include factory automation cells requiring mixed sensor connectivity, machine building with retrofit of IO-Link devices onto legacy EtherNet/IP lines, automotive body-in-white welding cells, and food and beverage machinery where IP67 washdown capability is mandatory. The MQTT JSON interface enables predictive maintenance dashboards that consume process data independently of the PLC scan cycle. When designing with the AL1322, ensure the EtherNet/IP scanner/PLC supports the EDS file revision shipped with the unit. For ring topologies, configure Device Level Ring (DLR) on the PLC side and verify beacon frame support. Power budgeting must account for actuator current on B-ports (up to 2 A per port typical).
