5M240ZT100C4N Übersicht

The Intel (formerly Altera) 5M240ZT100C4N is a member of the MAX V family of Complex Programmable Logic Devices (CPLDs) housed in a 100-pin TQFP (T100) package. It provides 192 macro cells / 240 logic elements, 8 Kbits of user flash memory, and an internal JTAG interface, all fabricated on a low-power 1.8 V core process. The "Z" speed grade targets an fMAX of approximately 184 MHz, while the "C" temperature rating covers the commercial 0 °C to +85 °C operating window. The "T100" suffix denotes the thin plastic TQFP-100 footprint with 100 surface-mount leads, and the trailing "4N" indicates speed/packaging option code and lead-free, RoHS-compliant assembly.

What is a CPLD? A Complex Programmable Logic Device is a non-volatile programmable logic device that sits in the system hierarchy between simple glue-logic ICs (74-series gates, muxes) and higher-density FPGAs. Unlike SRAM-based FPGAs that require external configuration memory, a CPLD stores its configuration in on-chip flash or EEPROM and becomes active at power-on within microseconds. CPLDs are typically used as "glue logic" to perform bus decoding, interface bridging, power-up sequencing, and I/O expansion between processors, memories, and peripherals where deterministic timing and instant-on behaviour matter more than raw logic density.

Key features of the MAX V 5M240ZT100C4N include multi-volt I/O support (1.5 V, 1.8 V, 2.5 V, 3.3 V LVCMOS/LVTTL) through 4 I/O banks with independent VCCIO rails, an internal oscillator that removes the need for an external clock source for simple state-machine designs, and a built-in IEEE 1149.1 JTAG controller plus JTAG-aware in-system programmability. The device consumes approximately 30 mA of ICC supply current in typical operation and is well-suited for battery-backed or thermally-constrained boards.

The MAX V architecture uses a unified flash-based Logic Array Block (LAB) fabric combined with a global interconnect matrix. Each macro cell contains a programmable AND/OR/flip-flop set with per-pin output enables, enabling both combinational and registered logic at the pin. Configuration is stored on-chip, so the part behaves like dedicated logic immediately after VCC ramp — a critical advantage in power-sequenced systems and hot-swap designs.

Typical applications include I/O expansion and bus decode for microcontrollers, glue logic between ASSPs and DDR/DDR2 memory controllers, industrial control boards requiring instant-on logic, JTAG-based board-level test infrastructure, and pin-compatible logic consolidation when migrating from legacy 5 V CPLDs (using 3.3 V VCCIO with level shifters).

When designing with this part, observe the JTAG pin grouping (TMS, TDI, TDO, TCK are bank-1-only and do not support PCI or 1.2 V LVCMOS standards). Decoupling requirements follow the MAX V handbook: 0.1 µF ceramic capacitors close to each VCC and VCCIO pin, plus a bulk capacitor on each supply rail.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in MAX V and pin-compatible alternative CPLDs, and practical design notes not found in the bare manufacturer datasheet.

Typische Anwendungen

5M240ZT100C4N ist geeignet für 6 Anwendungs: Microcontroller I/O Expansion and Bus Decode, Industrial PLC and Factory Automation Controllers, Board-Level JTAG Test and Boundary-Scan Infrastructure, Power-Up Sequencing and Reset Management, Legacy 5V Logic Replacement, Display and Touch-Panel Interface Bridging.

🔧

Microcontroller I/O Expansion and Bus Decode

The 5M240ZT100C4N is ideally suited as a glue-logic companion to mid-range microcontrollers that lack sufficient I/O pins or address-decoding capability. With 240 logic elements and 192 macro cells, it can decode up to ~24 address lines and generate chip-selects for multiple peripherals simultaneously. The MAX V's 7.5 ns propagation delay fits comfortably under most MCU memory-cycle timing budgets, and the four multi-volt I/O banks (1.5/1.8/2.5/3.3 V) let the CPLD bridge directly between a 3.3 V MCU and 1.8 V DDR2 memory without external level shifters. Because the MAX V is flash-based, the design is active at power-on — critical for cold-boot peripheral bring-up.

🏭

Industrial PLC and Factory Automation Controllers

In PLC and factory-automation designs, the 5M240ZT100C4N consolidates dozens of 74-series glue-logic ICs into a single device, reducing PCB area and improving reliability. Its deterministic 7.5 ns tPD and instant-on behaviour suit deterministic scan-cycle logic that must execute within a fixed time budget after power-up. The 8 Kbits of on-chip user flash stores calibration data and serial numbers, removing the need for an external EEPROM. Designers targeting -40 °C operation should drop in the pin-compatible 5M240ZT100I5N industrial sibling. The TQFP-100 footprint also supports hand-rework and prototyping on through-hole adapter boards.

🔧

Board-Level JTAG Test and Boundary-Scan Infrastructure

The MAX V family's IEEE 1149.1 JTAG controller makes the 5M240ZT100C4N a natural choice for board-level boundary-scan test access. Designers can configure the CPLD as a JTAG-to-I2C/SPI bridge or as a passive scan-monitor observing inter-IC buses during production test. The 5M240Z's high I/O count and 4-bank multi-volt support let it sit alongside 1.8 V, 2.5 V, and 3.3 V devices on the same scan chain without level shifters. Note from the datasheet that the bank-1 JTAG pins do not support PCI or 1.2 V LVCMOS standards — set the VCCIO1 bank to 2.5 V or 3.3 V when using JTAG.

⚡

Power-Up Sequencing and Reset Management

Power-up sequencing of multi-rail systems (FPGA + DDR + ASSP + analog) is a canonical CPLD application. The 5M240ZT100C4N's instant-on behaviour (flash-based, ready in microseconds) and 192 macro cells can implement up to a dozen independent sequencer channels with watchdog timers. The 1.8 V VCCINT rail and four VCCIO banks let the CPLD interface directly to all common rail voltages used in telecom and embedded designs. Compared with discrete reset supervisors, a single MAX V part replaces 3-5 timer/sequencer ICs, saving board area and BOM cost while improving timing accuracy.

🔧

Legacy 5V Logic Replacement

The 5M240ZT100C4N is widely used to replace legacy 5 V 74LS/74HC/74F glue-logic arrays on industrial and military boards reaching end-of-life. Designers map the discrete gate functions (decoders, muxes, latches, counters) into the 240 logic elements, eliminating dozens of legacy SOIC parts and improving long-term availability. With 3.3 V VCCIO, the CPLD can directly interface to 3.3 V modern ASICs; external 5 V-tolerant buffers (such as SN74LVC4245) handle the legacy side. The TQFP-100 footprint and JEDEC-standard pin ordering simplify PCB drop-in when the original 5 V logic array used a similar pitch.

📺

Display and Touch-Panel Interface Bridging

Small-form-factor LCD and OLED panels typically expose parallel RGB or 8080/6800 interfaces that need glue logic to connect to host processors with limited parallel I/O. The 5M240ZT100C4N's 240 LE and 4 I/O banks accommodate a full 18-bit RGB-to-LVDS bridge, a touch-panel I2C/USB HID converter, or a backlight PWM controller in a single chip. The 7.5 ns tPD is fast enough for 800x600 panels at 60 Hz, and the 184 MHz internal fMAX leaves headroom for 1024x768 designs. Compared with an FPGA-plus-config-memory solution, the MAX V BOM is significantly cheaper and the boot time is essentially zero.

What is the operating voltage of 5M240ZT100C4N?
The 5M240ZT100C4N operates from a 1.8 V core supply (VCCINT) with separate VCCIO rails that can be independently set per bank to 1.5 V, 1.8 V, 2.5 V, or 3.3 V. According to the Altera MAX V Device Handbook, this multi-volt I/O architecture lets the CPLD bridge between 3.3 V microcontrollers and 1.8 V memory without external level shifters. Always decouple each VCCIO pin with a 0.1 µF ceramic capacitor placed within 100 mils of the pad.
How many logic elements and macro cells does the 5M240ZT100C4N have?
The 5M240ZT100C4N contains 240 logic elements organized as 192 macro cells, plus 8 Kbits of dedicated user flash memory for storing customer data such as serial numbers or trim values. Compared with the smaller MAX V parts (5M80Z = 80 LE, 5M160Z = 160 LE), the 240-LE capacity of the 5M240Z targets medium-density glue-logic consolidation tasks.
What is the difference between 5M240ZT100C4N and 5M240ZT100C5N?
The 5M240ZT100C4N is the C4 speed/packaging variant, while 5M240ZT100C5N is the C5 speed/packaging variant in the same TQFP-100 footprint. Per FindIC comparison data, the C5 grade raises fMAX to about 118 MHz with relaxed timing characteristics versus the C4 grade's higher-speed characterization. Both share the same 192 macro cells, 8 Kbits flash, and pinout, so the C4 can typically be replaced by C5 if timing margins allow, but not vice-versa.
What is the difference between 5M240ZT100C4N and 5M240ZT100I5N?
The 5M240ZT100C4N operates over the commercial 0 °C to +85 °C range, while the 5M240ZT100I5N operates over the industrial -40 °C to +100 °C range and is the I-grade speed/packaging variant. Per FindIC, both share the TQFP-100 package, 192 macro cells, and 8 Kbits flash, so the parts are pin-compatible. Substitute I for C when designing outdoor, automotive, or factory-floor equipment.
Where can I buy 5M240ZT100C4N online?
The 5M240ZT100C4N is in stock at DigiKey (part 544-2976-ND), Mouser, LCSC (C6076050), Octopart-listed distributors, and Heisener as of 2026-09-06. Unit pricing starts near $7.08 at qty-1 and drops to roughly $3.10 at qty-3000 from authorized channels. For prototype quantities under 100 pcs, LCSC typically offers the lowest unit cost; for volume production, request a quote from Intel directly or from franchised distributors.
What is the lead time for 5M240ZT100C4N orders?
Authorized distributors such as DigiKey and Mouser typically ship 5M240ZT100C4N from on-hand stock with no factory lead time when the line shows >0 inventory. Heisener lists a typical delivery window of Feb 12 – Feb 17 for replenishment orders as of 2026-09-06. For volumes above 5,000 pcs, request a factory lead-time quote from Intel directly, as CPLD lead times can stretch to 12-26 weeks under allocation.

Yes, as of 2026-09-06 the 5M240ZT100C4N is reported in stock at Heisener (5,376 pieces), DigiKey, Mouser, and LCSC. Because the part is mature and widely second-sourced, pricing remains stable and allocation risk is low. Always re-check live inventory before placing a production order, especially for builds above 10,000 pcs.
What is the price of 5M240ZT100C4N at qty-100?
At a quantity break of 100 pieces, the 5M240ZT100C4N lists for approximately $5.10 per unit at franchised distributors as of 2026-09-06. LCSC's $2.02 unit price is the lowest observed open-market quote but ships from Asian warehouses with longer transit times. Always verify the part marking and date code when sourcing from brokers, as counterfeit MAX V devices are a documented industry issue.
5M240ZT100C4N vs 5M160ZT100C4N — which is better for I/O expansion?
For I/O expansion on a microcontroller, the 5M240ZT100C4N is the better choice when you need more than 80 logic elements, since it offers 240 LE / 192 macro cells versus the 5M160ZT100C4N's 160 LE / 128 macro cells. Both share the same TQFP-100 footprint and the same multi-volt I/O banks, so the 5M240Z is a strict superset. Choose 5M160Z only if your design fits in 128 macro cells and you want a ~20% unit-cost reduction.
When should I choose 5M240ZT100C4N over an FPGA?
Choose the 5M240ZT100C4N over an SRAM-based FPGA when instant-on behaviour (configuration in microseconds, not milliseconds), deterministic pin-to-pin timing, and non-volatile storage of user data (8 Kbits of flash) are required. The MAX V CPLD is also typically lower quiescent current and lower BOM cost than a small FPGA plus its configuration memory. Select an FPGA only when you need more than ~240 logic elements, DSP blocks, or high-speed serial transceivers.
Is 5M240ZT100C4N suitable for industrial control boards?
Yes, but the 5M240ZT100C4N itself is commercial-grade (0 °C to +85 °C). For industrial deployments that must operate down to -40 °C, choose the I-grade sibling 5M240ZT100I5N instead — it shares the same TQFP-100 package and macro-cell count. Many industrial designs use the MAX V 5M240Z as glue logic between a microcontroller and a DDR/DDR2 memory controller because the multi-volt I/O banks eliminate external level shifters.
What is the best drop-in replacement for 5M240ZT100C4N?
The best drop-in replacement for 5M240ZT100C4N in the same TQFP-100 footprint is the 5M240ZT100C5N (faster speed grade), the industrial-grade 5M240ZT100I5N, and the lower-density 5M160ZT100C4N. All four parts share the identical TQFP-100 pinout. Per FindIC, the 5M240ZT100C5N is functionally similar with electrical characteristics that differ only in timing margin — a true pin-to-pin drop-in.

Auswahlhilfe

Choose the 5M240ZT100C4N when you need the highest logic density (240 LE / 192 macro cells) of the MAX V CPLD family in a TQFP-100 package and your design operates within the commercial 0 °C to +85 °C window. Switch to the pin-compatible 5M240ZT100I5N for industrial -40 °C to +100 °C deployments, or to the 5M240ZT100C5N if you only need up to ~118 MHz fMAX and want a lower-cost speed bin. Step down to the 5M160ZT100C4N if your design fits in 128 macro cells and you want a ~20% unit-cost reduction with the same footprint. Avoid the MAX V entirely if you need PLLs, DSP blocks, or more than ~240 LE — at that point an entry-level Cyclone FPGA becomes more cost-effective.

Designhinweise

The MAX V 5M240Z operates from a 1.8 V VCCINT rail with separate VCCIO rails per bank. Place a 0.1 µF X7R ceramic decoupling capacitor within 100 mils of every VCCINT and VCCIO pin, plus one 10 µF bulk capacitor per supply rail. The device draws approximately 30 mA of Icc in typical operation; peak current during in-system programming can transient up to ~80 mA, so size the 1.8 V regulator accordingly.

The TQFP-100 package has a 0.5 mm lead pitch and 14 x 14 mm body. Use 0.1 mm escape vias in a dog-bone pattern to fan out the inner leads; do not place signal traces under the package. Because the MAX V is non-volatile, no configuration memory footprint is required, saving significant board area compared with an SRAM FPGA of similar LE count. Reserve a 4-pin JTAG header (TMS/TDI/TDO/TCK plus GND/VCCIO1) on every board for in-system programmability.

JTAG pins (TMS, TDI, TDO, TCK) reside in bank 1 and do not support PCI or 1.2 V LVCMOS standards — always set VCCIO1 to 2.5 V or 3.3 V when using the JTAG interface. Do not leave unused I/O pins floating; configure them as outputs driving low or as inputs with weak pull-ups to minimize supply-current creep. When migrating from an FPGA, remember the MAX V has no PLLs, no block RAM, and no DSP blocks — keep glue-logic designs within 240 LE and a single global clock.
