A3982SLBTR-T Übersicht
What is a stepper motor driver? A stepper motor driver is a specialized power-management IC that sits between a low-current microcontroller and a bipolar stepper motor, translating logic-level step/direction pulses into the high-current dual-H-bridge sequences required to commutate the motor windings. The A3982SLBTR-T belongs to the motor-driver sub-family of the broader motor-control/ignition controller category and includes an integrated translator so the host MCU does not need to compute phase tables.
Key features include a 3 V to 5.5 V logic supply, an 8 V to 35 V motor supply range, synchronous rectification through low-RDS(on) DMOS outputs (370 mOhm typical), automatic current-decay mode detection that selects Slow, Mixed, or Fast decay, and a fixed off-time PWM current regulator. The integrated translator accepts STEP and DIR inputs and supports full-step and half-step operation.
The device uses a dual DMOS full-bridge architecture with internal charge-pump gate drive for the high-side N-FETs, plus crossover protection and thermal shutdown. Synchronous rectification reduces power dissipation versus diode-based designs, allowing the SOIC-24 package to deliver 2 A continuous per phase without an external heatsink in moderate-temperature environments.
Typical applications include bipolar stepper motors in 3D printers, CNC routers, textile machinery, label printers, and office automation equipment. The translator interface and built-in current control make it especially attractive in designs where the host lacks real-time motor-control capability.
When designing with the A3982SLBTR-T, observe the motor-supply decoupling guidance from the datasheet and route the high-current loop area as small as possible. The exposed thermal pad must be soldered to a copper pour to achieve the rated thermal performance.

Typische Anwendungen
A3982SLBTR-T ist geeignet für 6 Anwendungs: 3D Printer Stepper Axes, Small CNC Router and Engraver, Label and Receipt Printers, Office Automation Equipment, Textile and Sewing Machinery, Automated Valves and Damper Actuators.
3D Printer Stepper Axes
The A3982SLBTR-T drives the X, Y, Z, and extruder bipolar stepper motors typical of desktop 3D printers. Its 35 V/±2 A envelope covers NEMA 17 motors up to 1.5 A RMS per phase with substantial headroom, while the built-in STEP/DIR translator offloads commutation from the 8-bit MCU. The 370 mOhm RDS(on) keeps the SOIC-24 package cool enough to be sandwiched next to a heated bed without active cooling. Decouple VM with 100 uF bulk + 0.1 uF ceramic and route the sense resistor Kelvin-grounded for stable current control.

Small CNC Router and Engraver
Desktop CNC routers using NEMA 17 or small NEMA 23 steppers benefit from the A3982SLBTR-T's 35 V VM rating and ±2 A continuous output. The exposed thermal pad of the SOIC-24 package dissipates the ~3 W per phase typical conduction loss when stepping at moderate rates, and the synchronous rectification reduces shoot-through that would otherwise degrade surface finish on engraving passes. Use the mixed-decay mode for high-speed rapids and the slow-decay mode for low-speed finishing cuts to minimize ripple current torque pulsation.

Label and Receipt Printers
Thermal label printers and receipt printers use bipolar stepper motors to advance paper and drive the print head carriage. The A3982SLBTR-T's translator interface accepts the GPIO step pulses from the printer's main controller ASIC, and the 35 V/±2 A envelope is well-matched to the small NEMA 14/15 steppers used in these mechanisms. The SOIC-24 footprint fits the dense mainboard layout typical of thermal printer designs, and the integrated current regulation eliminates the need for a separate chopper circuit.

Office Automation Equipment
Copiers, scanners, and document feeders employ bipolar stepper motors for paper transport and optical-carriage positioning. The A3982SLBTR-T provides ±2 A per phase from a 24 V industrial bus, matching the standard office equipment power architecture, while its built-in translator simplifies firmware development on resource-constrained scanner controllers. The full-step and half-step resolution is sufficient for paper-path registration where higher microstepping resolution adds no value.

Textile and Sewing Machinery
Industrial sewing and embroidery machines drive X-Y fabric frames with bipolar stepper motors in the 1 A to 2 A RMS range, exactly the operating window of the A3982SLBTR-T. The fixed off-time current regulator maintains consistent torque across varying fabric loads, while the automatic decay-mode detection adapts to the rapid accelerations required for embroidery patterns. The SOIC-24 package with exposed thermal pad withstands the elevated ambient temperatures inside sewing-machine enclosures when soldered to adequate copper pour.

Automated Valves and Damper Actuators
Process-control damper actuators and metering valves use bipolar stepper motors for precise flow control in HVAC and laboratory automation. The A3982SLBTR-T's ±2 A continuous output drives typical 25 mm to 50 mm valve actuators directly, and the 35 V supply rail accepts standard 24 V industrial backplane power. The half-step mode provides 0.9-degree resolution after gearbox reduction, sufficient for most process-control positioning tasks where the A3982SLBTR-T's simpler translator interface outweighs the lack of microstepping.

Designhinweise
Estimated: at VM=24 V, VOUT=12 V (mid-step), and 2 A per phase continuous, conduction loss is approximately I^2 x R x 2 = 4 x 0.370 x 2 = ~3 W per phase. With the SOIC-24 SLB exposed-pad package soldered to at least 1 square inch of 2-oz copper, theta_JA drops to roughly 35 C/W, giving a junction rise of ~105 C above 25 C ambient - borderline at 85 C ambient. For continuous 2 A operation above 60 C ambient, use the A3977SLPTR-T instead.
Place the 0.1 uF logic-decoupling capacitor on VDD as close to pin 3 as possible, with a 10 uF bulk on VM adjacent to pin 24. The charge-pump flying capacitors on CP1 and CP2 (pins 22/23) must be 0.1 uF ceramic placed within 5 mm of those pins. The exposed thermal pad MUST be soldered to a continuous copper pour on the top layer with thermal vias to inner layers; otherwise theta_JA exceeds 60 C/W and thermal shutdown will trigger under normal load.
Do not leave the STEP input floating - the translator latches on every edge, so a noisy or floating STEP line will cause unintended stepping. Tie unused logic inputs (DIR, ENABLE, RESET, MS1, MS2) to defined logic levels; ENABLE and RESET have internal pull-ups but MS1/MS2 do not. The sense resistor ground return must be Kelvin-connected to the IC GND pin - sharing the sense-resistor ground with motor current return introduces error in the current-regulation loop.
Use a low-ESR 100 uF aluminum polymer or ceramic bulk capacitor on VM to absorb regenerative energy during deceleration. When the motor back-EMF exceeds VM, the A3982SLBTR-T does not include internal clamping; without adequate bulk capacitance, VM will spike above 35 V and trigger overvoltage or damage the IC. A 35 V TVS such as SMBJ33A across VM provides additional protection for high-inertia loads.
