ATSAMC21J18A-MNT Übersicht
What is a Cortex-M0+ microcontroller? The Cortex-M0+ is ARM's smallest, most energy-efficient 32-bit processor core, designed to bring 32-bit performance to deeply embedded cost- and power-sensitive applications previously served by 8-bit MCUs. The SAM C21 family extends this core with 5V-tolerant I/O, CAN-FD, and built-in Functional Safety (FuSa) support, positioning it between general-purpose Cortex-M0+ devices and higher-end Cortex-M4 parts in Microchip's portfolio.
Key differentiating features include a Peripheral Touch Controller (PTC) supporting capacitive touch sensing, a 6-channel Direct Memory Access (DMAC) controller, a Memory Protection Unit (MPU), a Micro Trace Buffer, an Event System for inter-peripheral signalling without CPU involvement, and an integrated CAN-FD controller that meets the latest automotive bus-bandwidth requirements. Six SERCOM modules (each configurable as USART, SPI, or I2C) provide flexible serial connectivity, and a 12-bit, 1 Msps ADC with up to 20 channels supports analog sensor interfaces.
Typical applications include industrial sensor hubs, BLDC and stepper motor control, capacitive touch key panels, CAN-FD automotive body and chassis nodes, HVAC controllers, white-goods user interfaces, and home-automation gateways. The combination of 5V I/O tolerance, integrated CAN-FD, and an industrial temperature grade makes the part particularly attractive for 12V/24V noisy-bus environments where 3.3V-only MCUs require level shifters.
When designing with this device, allocate adequate PCB area for thermal dissipation - the 64-QFN package uses an exposed thermal pad that must be soldered to a continuous ground plane. Decouple VDDIN with a 1uF and a 100 nF ceramic pair as close to the pin as practical, and follow Microchip's SAM C21 hardware design checklist for analog and PTC routing.

Designhinweise
The 64-QFN package relies on a large exposed thermal pad that must be soldered to a continuous ground plane on the top layer, with at least eight thermal vias stitched to inner ground planes. Without this stitching, the junction-to-ambient thermal resistance degrades substantially and continuous 48 MHz operation in hot enclosures can trigger thermal shutdown. Estimated: theta_JA ~ 28 C/W with a 4-layer PCB and full via array, derate by ~50% for 2-layer boards.
Place a 1uF X7R ceramic and a 100 nF ceramic decoupling pair within 2 mm of the VDDIN pin, and repeat the same pair at the VDDCORE pin. Add a 10 uF bulk tantalum or polymer capacitor on the 5V rail upstream of the LDO that feeds VDDIN. Estimated: peak transient current at 48 MHz with all peripherals active can reach 40 mA for 100 us bursts, so the bulk capacitor must supply this without more than 50 mV droop.
Route the CAN-FD TX and RX traces as a 100 ohm differential pair with continuous ground reference on both sides and length matching within 5 mm. Place the CAN transceiver within 50 mm of the MCU pins to keep stubs short. For PTC touch traces, surround each electrode with a grounded guard ring and route on a layer adjacent to the touch surface to maximise coupling and minimise false triggers from radiated noise.
Do not apply 5V to any I/O pin before VDDIN reaches at least 1.5V - the part is 5V tolerant only after power-up. The unused pins should be configured as outputs driven low or as inputs with internal pull-ups enabled; floating inputs can draw several mA of leakage. The BOOTPROT bits in the NVM user row must be programmed before mass production to prevent accidental bootloader re-entry.
Compliance-Informationen
RoHS compliant and lead-free per Microchip ordering code nomenclature. Standard grade is -40C to +105C industrial, not AEC-Q100 automotive-qualified; for AEC-Q100 applications choose the SAM C20/C21 AEC-Q100 variants.
