ATSAMC21J18A-MNT Descripción general
What is a Cortex-M0+ microcontroller? The Cortex-M0+ is ARM's smallest, most energy-efficient 32-bit processor core, designed to bring 32-bit performance to deeply embedded cost- and power-sensitive applications previously served by 8-bit MCUs. The SAM C21 family extends this core with 5V-tolerant I/O, CAN-FD, and built-in Functional Safety (FuSa) support, positioning it between general-purpose Cortex-M0+ devices and higher-end Cortex-M4 parts in Microchip's portfolio.
Key differentiating features include a Peripheral Touch Controller (PTC) supporting capacitive touch sensing, a 6-channel Direct Memory Access (DMAC) controller, a Memory Protection Unit (MPU), a Micro Trace Buffer, an Event System for inter-peripheral signalling without CPU involvement, and an integrated CAN-FD controller that meets the latest automotive bus-bandwidth requirements. Six SERCOM modules (each configurable as USART, SPI, or I2C) provide flexible serial connectivity, and a 12-bit, 1 Msps ADC with up to 20 channels supports analog sensor interfaces.
Typical applications include industrial sensor hubs, BLDC and stepper motor control, capacitive touch key panels, CAN-FD automotive body and chassis nodes, HVAC controllers, white-goods user interfaces, and home-automation gateways. The combination of 5V I/O tolerance, integrated CAN-FD, and an industrial temperature grade makes the part particularly attractive for 12V/24V noisy-bus environments where 3.3V-only MCUs require level shifters.
When designing with this device, allocate adequate PCB area for thermal dissipation - the 64-QFN package uses an exposed thermal pad that must be soldered to a continuous ground plane. Decouple VDDIN with a 1uF and a 100 nF ceramic pair as close to the pin as practical, and follow Microchip's SAM C21 hardware design checklist for analog and PTC routing.

Aplicaciones típicas
ATSAMC21J18A-MNT es adecuado para 7 aplicacións: Industrial CAN-FD Sensor Node, BLDC and Stepper Motor Control, Capacitive Touch User Interface, Automotive Body and Chassis Module, Home-Automation and IoT Gateway, Medical Monitoring Device, HVAC and White-Goods Controller.
Industrial CAN-FD Sensor Node
The ATSAMC21J18A-MNT's 5V-tolerant I/O and integrated CAN-FD controller are a strong fit for industrial sensor nodes on 24V factory buses. With 256 KB of Flash and 32 KB of SRAM, the part can run a CANopen or J1939 stack, a local PID loop, and a fault handler concurrently. The 64-QFN exposes the CAN-FD pins alongside six SERCOM channels so designers can daisy-chain temperature, pressure, and flow sensors to a PLC without an external transceiver's level shifter on the digital side.
Recomendado
BLDC and Stepper Motor Control
The ATSAMC21J18A-MNT's 48 MHz Cortex-M0+ core, 12-bit 1 Msps ADC, and six SERCOM peripherals support sensored or sensorless BLDC commutation at modest RPM. Designers use the Event System to trigger ADC sampling from timer PWM edges without CPU intervention, freeing cycles for speed and current loops. The integrated PTC enables capacitive start/stop touch buttons on motor housings, and the 5V I/O simplifies direct interfacing to gate drivers like the MCP14 family.
Recomendado
Capacitive Touch User Interface
The ATSAMC21J18A-MNT's Peripheral Touch Controller supports self-capacitance and mutual-capacitance scanning for buttons, sliders, and wheels in white-goods and consumer panels. Combined with the 12-bit ADC for temperature sensing and six SERCOM buses for display and Wi-Fi module communication, a single chip replaces the typical MCU-plus-touch-IC pair. The 8 KB EEPROM-emulation Flash preserves user settings across power cycles for at least 25,000 write cycles.
Recomendado
Automotive Body and Chassis Module
With its -40C to +105C industrial-grade temperature range, 5V I/O tolerance, and built-in Functional Safety (FuSa) features, the ATSAMC21J18A-MNT is well suited to body controllers, HVAC head units, lighting nodes, and seat-control modules that interface with 12V automotive buses. The CAN-FD controller delivers modern payload bandwidth for diagnostic and gateway functions, while six SERCOM channels can drive LIN, SPI displays, and I2C sensors concurrently.
Recomendado
Home-Automation and IoT Gateway
The ATSAMC21J18A-MNT aggregates multiple wireless and wired protocols through its six SERCOM channels (each reconfigurable as USART, SPI, or I2C), letting a single chip serve as the host MCU for sub-GHz radios, Wi-Fi modules, and sensor I2C buses. The 256 KB Flash accommodates TLS or MQTT client stacks for secure cloud connectivity, while 32 KB of SRAM handles packet buffers without external memory. The wide 2.7-5.5V supply accepts direct USB or 5V adapter rails.
Recomendado
Medical Monitoring Device
The ATSAMC21J18A-MNT's 12-bit 1 Msps ADC, ample 256 KB Flash for algorithm code, and 5V-tolerant I/O simplify medical device front-ends that interface with legacy analog sensors. The Memory Protection Unit isolates safety-critical code from non-critical stacks, an essential feature for IEC 62304-aligned firmware architectures. The 64-QFN package exposes enough SERCOM channels to drive an OLED display, a Bluetooth module, and a battery charger concurrently.
Recomendado
HVAC and White-Goods Controller
HVAC controllers and washing-machine / dishwasher control boards benefit from the ATSAMC21J18A-MNT's 5V I/O to drive triac interfaces and relay coils directly without external drivers. The Peripheral Touch Controller supports modern capacitive keypads replacing mechanical switches, while CAN-FD allows the controller to participate in appliance-bus networks for diagnostics. With 256 KB Flash, the part easily handles energy-rating algorithms, user-interface state machines, and safety routines.

Notas de diseño
The 64-QFN package relies on a large exposed thermal pad that must be soldered to a continuous ground plane on the top layer, with at least eight thermal vias stitched to inner ground planes. Without this stitching, the junction-to-ambient thermal resistance degrades substantially and continuous 48 MHz operation in hot enclosures can trigger thermal shutdown. Estimated: theta_JA ~ 28 C/W with a 4-layer PCB and full via array, derate by ~50% for 2-layer boards.
Place a 1uF X7R ceramic and a 100 nF ceramic decoupling pair within 2 mm of the VDDIN pin, and repeat the same pair at the VDDCORE pin. Add a 10 uF bulk tantalum or polymer capacitor on the 5V rail upstream of the LDO that feeds VDDIN. Estimated: peak transient current at 48 MHz with all peripherals active can reach 40 mA for 100 us bursts, so the bulk capacitor must supply this without more than 50 mV droop.
Route the CAN-FD TX and RX traces as a 100 ohm differential pair with continuous ground reference on both sides and length matching within 5 mm. Place the CAN transceiver within 50 mm of the MCU pins to keep stubs short. For PTC touch traces, surround each electrode with a grounded guard ring and route on a layer adjacent to the touch surface to maximise coupling and minimise false triggers from radiated noise.
Do not apply 5V to any I/O pin before VDDIN reaches at least 1.5V - the part is 5V tolerant only after power-up. The unused pins should be configured as outputs driven low or as inputs with internal pull-ups enabled; floating inputs can draw several mA of leakage. The BOOTPROT bits in the NVM user row must be programmed before mass production to prevent accidental bootloader re-entry.
