DSPIC33CH128MP502-I/SS Übersicht

The Microchip DSPIC33CH128MP502-I/SS is a dual-core 16-bit Digital Signal Controller (DSC) that integrates two dsPIC® DSC cores on a single die, packaged in a 28-pin SSOP with 0.65 mm pitch and intended for high-performance digital power, motor control, and other sophisticated algorithm applications. The master core delivers up to 90 MIPS while the slave core delivers up to 100 MIPS, with the device running at internal clock rates up to 200 MHz, and 128 KB of Flash plus 16 KB of SRAM are partitioned between the two cores. The part operates from a 3.0V to 3.6V supply and is qualified over the -40C to +85C industrial temperature range.

A Digital Signal Controller (DSC) is a hybrid device that combines the control-oriented peripherals and deterministic interrupt response of a microcontroller with the high-throughput DSP engine of a digital signal processor. Within the broader taxonomy it sits under Microcontroller -> 16-bit MCU -> DSC -> Motor Control & Digital Power MCU -> Semiconductor. The 'CH' family introduces a true dual-core architecture where the slave core can offload time-critical control loops (such as current sampling in a digital PFC or field-oriented motor control) while the master core runs communications, housekeeping, and supervisory tasks, achieving lower jitter than a single-core design.

Key features of the dsPIC33CH128MP502 include high-resolution PWM with 250 ps resolution, a 12-bit ADC with up to 3.5 MSPS and dual S/H circuits, four analog comparators with 1 ns propagation delay, two 12-bit DACs, and integrated CAN Flexible Data-rate (CAN FD) controllers for automotive and industrial networking. Up to 19 PWM channels and configurable logic cells let designers implement complex power-conversion topologies without external gate drivers or FPGA glue logic.

Architecturally, each core has its own interrupt controller, register set, and tightly-coupled RAM; shared peripherals are accessed through a bus matrix that maintains coherency. The slave core can be programmed and debugged independently from the master, allowing IP protection by keeping proprietary control-loop firmware on the slave while exposing only the master application code. Typical applications include wireless-power transmitters, server and telecom SMPS digital controllers, BLDC/PMSM motor drives, and automotive sensor fusion.

For designers, the most important trade-off is that the 28-pin SSOP limits the analog and PWM pin count versus larger 64- or 80-pin variants in the same family; if more channels are needed, consider stepping up to the dsPIC33CH128MP505 or MP506 in 48/64-pin packages. Ensure decoupling is tight (100 nF + 1 uF + 10 uF) near VDD, and follow the dspic33ch dual-core bring-up sequence so the slave core is released only after the master has configured shared resources. This page synthesizes distributor stock, parametric alternatives, and application guidance not found in the manufacturer datasheet alone.

The 28-pin SSOP package and industrial -40C to +85C rating fit compact drone ESC boards where PCB area and ambient temperature are tight constraints.

🏭

Industrial Sensor and Field Instrumentation

Industrial 4-20 mA loop-powered transmitters and field sensors benefit from the DSPIC33CH128MP502-I/SS's dual-core partitioning, where the slave core continuously samples and filters the analog front end at 3.5 MSPS while the master runs HART or IO-Link protocol stacks. The 16-bit DSC engine executes CORDIC and FFT instructions natively, enabling on-sensor vibration analysis for predictive maintenance without an external DSP. The wide 3.0-3.6 V supply tolerance accommodates unregulated 24 V loop drops, and the -40C to +85C rating covers outdoor installation requirements.

🚗

Automotive Body and Chassis Modules

Automotive body controllers, HVAC blowers, and seat-control modules use the DSPIC33CH128MP502-I/SS for its integrated CAN FD, which supports 8 Mbps backbone speeds on modern vehicle networks, and for the slave core's deterministic PWM that meets ASIL-B torque-ripple requirements in seat-positioning drives. The AEC-Q100 qualified -Q1 grade variant is preferred for in-cabin applications, while the industrial -I grade suffices for under-hood auxiliary loads when paired with external protection. Dual-core isolation also lets developers lock proprietary motor-tuning IP on the slave core, a key advantage when tier-1 suppliers share firmware with OEMs.

💡

LED Lighting and Architectural Dimming

Architectural and stage lighting dimmers use the DSPIC33CH128MP502-I/SS to generate 16-bit PWM dimming at >20 kHz above the audible band, while the slave core runs adaptive thermal-folding algorithms using the on-chip temperature sensor and 12-bit ADC. The 4 analog comparators and 250 ps PWM resolution enable multi-channel CC/CV LED drivers with smooth logarithmic dimming curves that match human-eye perception. Operating from a single 3.3 V rail with internal LDO simplifies the analog side of dimmable MR16 and DMX-controlled fixtures.

Auswahlhilfe

Choose the DSPIC33CH128MP502-I/SS when your application needs deterministic dual-core DSP performance in a compact 28-pin SSOP for industrial-grade environments (-40C to +85C). The slave core runs time-critical loops like FOC or PFC while the master handles communication and housekeeping, making it ideal for digital power, motor control, and wireless charging designs where jitter under 2 ns is essential. If your design requires extended temperature operation, select the pin-compatible DSPIC33CH128MP502-E/SS for the -40C to +125C range; for automotive PPAP traceability, the DSPIC33CH128MP502-E/SSVAO is the same part with full AEC-Q100 documentation. If you need fewer PWM or ADC channels at lower cost, the DSPIC33CH128MP202-I/SS keeps the 28-pin SSOP footprint but with reduced peripheral count. If you need more I/O (e.g., 48 or 64 pins) for multi-phase converters or quad-motor drives, step up to the MP505 or MP508 in larger packages - none of those larger variants are drop-in compatible, so plan a board spin if you outgrow the MP502.

Wichtigste Unterscheidungsmerkmale

  • True dual-core DSC architecture with independently programmable cores (vs. DSPIC33EP256MP506 (single-core predecessor))
  • High-resolution 250 ps PWM with hardware slope compensation (vs. Standard 8 ns PWM on legacy dsPIC33FJ)
  • Pin-compatible 28-pin SSOP package across industrial, extended, and automotive grades (vs. DSPIC33CH128MP503-I/SS (same family, different option))

Designhinweise

Place a 100 nF X7R decoupling capacitor within 3 mm of each VDD pin, plus a 1 uF and 10 uF bulk capacitor on the same rail near the IC. The 28-pin SSOP has two VDD pins (1 and 14) - both must be decoupled. Keep the analog AVdd pin (when bonded out) on a separate ferrite-filtered rail to keep PWM switching noise out of the ADC reference path. Estimated input values: 200 MHz internal clock, switching currents up to 50 mA instantaneous per core during high-MIPS execution.

Route the crystal oscillator traces (OSC1/OSC2) symmetrically with a ground guard ring on both sides and keep them shorter than 10 mm to avoid exceeding the 16 MHz crystal-driving limit. The PGECx/PGEDx programming pair should be brought out to an unpopulated header so that in-circuit debugging remains possible in production - Microchip ICD 4 / PICkit 4 supports dual-core debug of both master and slave cores simultaneously.

Common pitfalls with the dsPIC33CH dual-core architecture: (1) do NOT release the slave core from reset until the master core has configured shared peripherals, otherwise bus faults occur; (2) the slave core has no independent DMA controller - heavy DMA workloads must be allocated to the master; (3) configure the auxiliary PLL early in the master-core startup sequence so the slave core boots at the correct 200 MHz; (4) the SLAVE_DEVSR register must be polled before master access to shared RAM to avoid coherency stalls.

Estimated: At maximum CPU activity (both cores at 100 percent utilization, 200 MHz, 3.3 V supply), the device dissipates roughly 0.45 W of dynamic power. The 28-pin SSOP has a theta_JA of approximately 80 C/W on a standard JEDEC 4-layer test board, yielding a junction temperature rise of 36 C above ambient. Industrial -40 to +85 C operation is therefore achievable without a heatsink, but continuous high-MIPS workloads in enclosed enclosures should be verified with a thermocouple in worst-case ventilation conditions.

The high-resolution 250 ps PWM outputs have edge rates below 2 ns, so trace impedance and termination matter even for short PCB routes. Use a 50 ohm microstrip on the top layer with continuous reference plane for PWM traces longer than 25 mm, and place a small 33 ohm series resistor close to the driver pin if ringing exceeds 10 percent of the rail. The CAN FD bus requires a 120 ohm termination at each end of the trunk and twisted-pair routing per ISO 11898-2.
