DSPIC33FJ128MC802-I/SO Übersicht

The Microchip DSPIC33FJ128MC802-I/SO is a 16-bit Digital Signal Controller (DSC) that combines high-performance DSP capability with a microcontroller peripheral set, featuring a 40 MHz core clock, 128 KB of Flash program memory, and 16 KB of SRAM in a 28-pin SOIC package. It belongs to the dsPIC33F motor-control family, integrating an enhanced Harvard architecture CPU with a DSP engine for high-speed, repetitive numeric computation. The device supports up to 21 programmable I/O lines, two serial I/O ports, and an advanced analog front-end suitable for closed-loop motor control.

A Digital Signal Controller (DSC) is a class of embedded processor that merges a microcontroller's deterministic interrupt-driven control peripherals with a DSP's MAC engine and Harvard memory paths, enabling single-chip solutions for both control loops and signal processing. Within the broader taxonomy, this places dsPIC33F devices as a hybrid of MCU and DSP, descending from 16-bit MCU, hybrid MCU/DSP, and signal-conditioning-and-control SoC. The dsPIC33F family is software-compatible with the PIC24H MCUs and migration-compatible with the dsPIC30F family, easing code reuse across product variants.

The DSPIC33FJ128MC802 integrates 8 DMA channels, 5 timers, motor-control PWM with up to 6 outputs, a 10/12-bit ADC with up to 1 Msps, and an analog comparator for current sensing. Communication interfaces include I2C, SPI, UART, and CAN, alongside LIN support. Programmable I/O reaches 21 lines with individually configurable pull-ups and interrupt-on-change. Hardware multipliers and dedicated barrel-shifter accelerate real-time DSP routines such as Clarke/Park transforms, FOC, and digital filtering.

Typical applications include BLDC and PMSM motor drives, sensorless motor control, field-oriented control (FOC) inverter stages, digital power conversion, sensor signal conditioning, industrial automation, and HVAC variable-speed controllers. Designers select this DSC because its on-chip PWM, ADC, and analog comparator reduce external component count while sustaining deterministic interrupt latency for tight control loops. The device operates from 3.0 V to 3.6 V and is qualified to -40 C to +85 C industrial temperature range.

When designing with this device, ensure the 28-pin SOIC PCB layout reserves adequate copper under the exposed pad path (GND) and that decoupling follows the manufacturer recommended 100 nF plus 10 uF pattern. Programming is supported through ICSP and JTAG; MPLAB X IDE with XC16 compiler and dsPIC33F/PIC24H Family Reference Manual provide the complete toolchain.

Designhinweise

Estimated: Power dissipation at 40 MHz with all peripherals enabled is approximately 60 mA from 3.3 V, so total dissipation is ~198 mW. Decouple VDD with a 100 nF ceramic capacitor placed within 5 mm of the pin, plus a 10 uF bulk capacitor on the analog AVDD rail. Do not share analog and digital ground returns on the PCB - use a star-ground connection at the AVSS pin to avoid ADC reference contamination during PWM switching transitions.

Route the analog input traces (AN0-AN10) as far as possible from PWM switching traces to minimize capacitive coupling; the datasheet recommends keeping PWM traces on the opposite PCB layer and using a ground plane between them. Place the 32.768 kHz crystal load capacitors (SOSCI/SOSCO) symmetrically and guard the trace with a ground ring for RTC accuracy. Programming pins PGD/PGC require 4.7 kohm pull-ups on PGD and a 4.7 kohm pull-down on PGC for ICSP mode reliability.

Estimated: For SOIC-28 SO package, expect theta_JA around 70 C/W on a 2-layer FR-4 board with no thermal vias; with the same package on a 4-layer board with a continuous ground plane, theta_JA drops to approximately 40 C/W. At maximum dissipation (~250 mW), the junction temperature rise above ambient is only 10-18 C - well within the -40 C to +85 C industrial limit. However, derate by 25 percent when used in a sealed enclosure without airflow.

Do not leave unused PWM pins floating when PWM is enabled in the I/O map - per datasheet document 70291G, floating PWM pins oscillate and inject noise into adjacent analog inputs. Configure unused pins as digital outputs driven low, or disable the peripheral mapping. When using the device in ICSP mode, do not place large capacitors (>1 nF) on PGD/PGC as they may exceed ICSP spec timing. For CAN bus, add a 120 ohm termination resistor only at the physical ends of the bus, not on every node.
