LM324AWPT Übersicht
A quad operational amplifier (quad op-amp) is a monolithic integrated circuit that places four independent, internally-compensated op-amp cells in one package sharing common power pins. Quad op-amps belong to the broader operational amplifier family, which in turn falls under the linear IC hierarchy and finally under analog signal-conditioning semiconductors. Compared with single or dual op-amps, quad devices reduce PCB area, simplify routing, and lower the per-channel cost in applications requiring multiple gain, buffer, filter or comparator stages.
The LM324 series uses bipolar transistor input stages that can operate from a single supply as low as 3 V or from split ±1.5 V to ±16 V rails, with true ground-sensing capability on the input common-mode range. The differential input range includes the negative rail, eliminating the need for external biasing in single-supply designs. Output swing typically reaches within a few millivolts of both rails at moderate loads, and the device sustains continuous output short-circuits to ground or either rail thanks to internal current limiting.
Typical applications include active filters, transducer signal conditioning, DC gain blocks, voltage followers, comparators, and general-purpose analog signal chains in consumer, industrial and automotive subsystems. The wide supply range makes the part especially popular in 5 V single-rail microcontroller-interface circuits, where four op-amps share one supply rail alongside the MCU.
When designing with the LM324AWPT, place a 0.1 µF ceramic bypass capacitor within 5 mm of the VCC pin and consider the input bias current of 20 nA typical (50 nA maximum) when selecting source impedances — bias currents up to 50 nA across a 100 kΩ source produce a 5 mV offset error. Avoid using this part in precision sub-millivolt instrumentation paths; choose the LM324A-grade offset only when 2 mV is acceptable. Always consult the official STMicroelectronics datasheet for full DC and AC characteristic curves.

Typische Anwendungen
LM324AWPT ist geeignet für 8 Anwendungs: Single-Supply Sensor Signal Conditioning, Active Filter Building Blocks, Comparators and Threshold Detectors, General-Purpose DC Gain Blocks, Audio Preamplifier and Mixer Stages, Industrial Control and 4-20 mA Loops, Power-Supply Voltage Monitoring and Housekeeping, Educational and Prototyping Analog Circuits.
Single-Supply Sensor Signal Conditioning
The LM324AWPT's 3 V to 30 V single-supply range and true ground-sensing input common-mode range make it ideal for amplifying low-level signals from sensors powered directly from a 5 V microcontroller rail. With 4 independent channels in one TSSOP-14 package, a single IC conditions up to four transducer outputs (e.g. bridge, thermistor, photodiode) simultaneously, replacing four discrete single op-amps and shrinking the analog front-end footprint by roughly 50 percent. The A-grade 2 mV max input offset voltage keeps DC error below 0.1 percent of a 2 V sensor span, while the 1.3 MHz GBW comfortably amplifies bandwidths up to 10 kHz at gains of 100. The bipolar input stage delivers 20 nA typical bias current, which is acceptable for source impedances up to about 100 kΩ before offset errors exceed the 2 mV budget.

Active Filter Building Blocks
The LM324AWPT functions as a universal active-filter workhorse for Sallen-Key low-pass, high-pass, and band-pass topologies up to about 100 kHz cutoff frequencies. Each of the four internal op-amps implements one filter section, so a single IC delivers a complete 4th-order filter chain with the unity-gain stability built in and no external compensation capacitor required. The 0.4 V/µs slew rate limits the output amplitude at high cutoff to roughly 0.4 V per microsecond, which is more than adequate for audio-band and instrumentation-band filters below 20 kHz. Designers benefit from the LM324's low cost and broad supply flexibility when cascading filter stages across a PCB; the TSSOP-14 footprint keeps the analog section dense while leaving room for precision passives around each stage.

Comparators and Threshold Detectors
Because the LM324AWPT has no output phase reversal when the input common-mode voltage is driven beyond either rail, each channel doubles as a comparator for threshold detection and window-comparator circuits. The four channels allow a single IC to monitor up to four voltage rails, battery levels, or sensor trip-points, replacing four dedicated comparator chips and saving board area. The bipolar output stage can sink several milliamps to drive LEDs, relays, or logic inputs directly without external pull-up resistors when operating from a single supply. Open-loop response time of about 1 µs to a 5 mV overdrive is suitable for non-critical over-voltage, under-voltage, and limit-switch detection in industrial control panels and consumer appliances.

General-Purpose DC Gain Blocks
The LM324AWPT delivers predictable closed-loop DC gain from below unity up to several hundred when configured as a non-inverting or inverting amplifier with two external resistors. The wide supply range (3 V to 30 V single, ±1.5 V to ±16 V dual) lets the same circuit topology serve 3.3 V battery-powered boards and ±15 V industrial analog boards with only the resistor divider changed. The 1.3 MHz GBW supports closed-loop bandwidths of 13 kHz at a gain of 100 and 130 kHz at a gain of 10, making it versatile for instrumentation gain stages, summing amplifiers, difference amplifiers, and integrators in test equipment. The A-grade 2 mV Vio reduces calibration burden for DC-coupled paths in low-precision data-acquisition front-ends.

Audio Preamplifier and Mixer Stages
Although not an audio-optimized op-amp, the LM324AWPT serves reliably as a low-cost line-level preamplifier, summing mixer, or tone-control stage in consumer audio products such as intercoms, toys, and entry-level musical electronics. The four channels in one package can implement microphone preamp, line mixer, tone control, and output buffer in a single IC. With 0.4 V/µs slew rate and 1.3 MHz GBW the part passes full audio bandwidth (20 Hz to 20 kHz) cleanly at unity gain, and the bipolar input stage adds the warm soft-clipping character long associated with the LM324 family in audio folklore. Total harmonic distortion at 1 kHz and 2 Vrms output stays below 0.1 percent with a 600 Ω load, more than adequate for non-critical audio reproduction.

Industrial Control and 4-20 mA Loops
The LM324AWPT's ability to operate from a single 24 V industrial supply rail and its quad channel count make it well suited to 4-20 mA current-loop receivers, signal isolator front-ends, and PLC analog input cards. A single IC conditions four current-loop signals into 0-5 V or 0-10 V ADC-friendly levels, replacing four discrete single op-amps and reducing the analog-section BOM cost. The -40°C to +105°C operating temperature range (W suffix) covers the full industrial temperature window, and ROHS3 compliance plus >100,000 hour MTBF satisfy long-life industrial OEM requirements. The bipolar input stage tolerates the high common-mode voltages present in loop-powered systems when paired with input current-limiting resistors and a small input protection network.

Power-Supply Voltage Monitoring and Housekeeping
Each LM324AWPT channel can monitor one supply rail and assert a flag when the rail drifts out of regulation, making the part a cost-effective housekeeping supervisor in multi-rail systems. Four channels let a single TSSOP-14 IC watch 3.3 V, 5 V, 12 V, and 24 V rails in parallel, replacing four discrete comparators and saving PCB area. The wide 3 V to 30 V supply lets the op-amps run directly from the highest monitored rail, eliminating auxiliary supply generation. The 1 µs typical response time and 2 mV Vio give ±1 percent monitoring accuracy with a simple resistor divider, which is more than adequate for power-good indicators and brown-out detection in telecom, white-good, and industrial controllers.

Educational and Prototyping Analog Circuits
The LM324AWPT is a staple of university electronics labs and hobbyist prototyping because it provides four op-amps in one cheap TSSOP-14 package that operates from a single 5 V breadboard rail. Students use it to build inverting/non-inverting amplifiers, integrators, differentiators, oscillators, rectifiers, and peak detectors without needing negative supplies or external compensation. The LM324's internal frequency compensation means circuits work the moment they are wired, accelerating the learn-build-measure cycle. The same IC then graduates into commercial designs where its low cost (sub-USD 0.50 at volume) and broad supply tolerance keep BOM cost and design effort minimal across a wide range of consumer products.

Designhinweise
Place a 0.1 µF ceramic bypass capacitor within 5 mm of the VCC pin (pin 4) of the LM324AWPT to suppress supply noise that would otherwise couple into all four channels. For dual-supply operation use a 0.1 µF bypass on both VCC+ (pin 4) and GND/VCC- (pin 11). The total quiescent current of 1.5 mA across all four channels does not require a separate analog LDO unless the supply rail shares digital switching noise above 100 mV pk-pk, in which case an RC filter (10 Ω + 10 µF) ahead of the IC is recommended.
The LM324AWPT's bipolar input stage draws up to 50 nA of input bias current, which develops an offset error of (Ibias × Rs) across the source impedance. Keep source impedances below 50 kΩ to keep bias-current-induced errors under 2.5 mV. For higher source impedances, add a bias-current cancellation resistor from the non-inverting input to ground equal to the parallel combination of the inverting-input bias network, or migrate to a CMOS-input op-amp such as the MCP6004.
The TSSOP-14 thermal pad is not internally connected to the die substrate, so thermal dissipation is limited and no PCB copper heatsink is required. Keep analog traces short and surround the IC with a ground pour to minimize crosstalk between the four channels; expect roughly 60 dB of channel-to-channel isolation when channels are spaced 5 mm apart on a 4-layer PCB. Route sensitive input traces away from output traces of any channel that is driving a heavy load.
The LM324AWPT output stage cannot swing fully to either rail: at a 5 V single supply and 2 kΩ load the output reaches about 1.5 V at the low end and about 3.5 V at the high end, leaving roughly 1 V of headroom each side. Do not use this part in rail-to-rail output applications without first verifying the swing is sufficient. Also note that the LM324 has no output phase-reversal protection — driving the input beyond the negative rail will not damage the part but may cause output inversion; use a series input resistor of at least 10 kΩ to limit input current in such cases.
Separate analog and digital ground planes are not strictly required for the LM324AWPT, but if the IC is mixed on a board with switching converters, place the analog section's ground return path directly to the power-supply bulk capacitor rather than back through the digital ground. Keep the four channels' feedback resistors within 3 mm of their respective inverting inputs to minimize parasitic capacitance that would otherwise degrade phase margin at gains above 10. If the IC drives a capacitive load greater than 100 pF, add an isolation resistor of 50-100 Ω at the output to prevent peaking and instability.
