MAX7219CNG Übersicht

The Analog Devices (formerly Maxim Integrated) MAX7219CNG is a compact, serial-input/output common-cathode LED display driver that interfaces microprocessors to 7-segment numeric LED displays of up to 8 digits, bar-graph displays, or 64 individual LEDs. Housed in a 24-pin PDIP (narrow, 0.300 inch / 7.62 mm) through-hole package, the device operates from a single +4.0 V to +5.5 V supply and includes on-chip BCD Code-B decoder, multiplex scan circuitry, segment and digit drivers, plus an 8x8 static RAM that stores the display state.

A serial-in/serial-out LED driver is an interface IC that translates a high-speed synchronous serial data stream (SPI/QSPI/Microwire compatible on MAX7219) into multiplexed constant-current segment and digit outputs, eliminating the need for external current-limiting resistors on every LED. The MAX7219 belongs to the broader hierarchy LED display driver > display driver IC > interface IC > integrated circuit > semiconductor. Its integrated BCD decoder, multiplexing scan engine, and per-segment current control place it in the same functional family as the MAX7221 (SPI-only variant) and competitors such as Holtek HT16K33 and Titan Micro TM1637.

Key features of the MAX7219CNG include an individual LED segment current programmable up to 40 mA per segment via a single external resistor (ISET), a 150 µA low-power shutdown mode (data retained), a scan-limit register that allows 1 to 8 digits, a digital brightness control (16 steps via 4-bit PWM duty cycle), and a display test mode that forces all segments on. The serial interface runs up to 10 MHz at +5 V, and the device cascades for additional digits by clocking the DOUT pin into the DIN of the next MAX7219.

Typical applications are 8-digit 7-segment numeric readouts, 8x8 LED matrix modules (two cascaded MAX7219s drive a 64-LED matrix), bar-graph displays, industrial panel meters, scoreboard displays, and Arduino/AVR/PIC-based user interfaces. The MAX7219 is essentially the de-facto standard for hobbyist and educational LED matrix projects, with mature open-source libraries (LedControl, MD_MAX72XX, MD_Parola) supporting it.

When designing with the MAX7219CNG, place a 0.1 µF bypass capacitor close to V+ and a 10 µF tantalum bulk capacitor on the supply rail, keep the ISET resistor within 9.53 kΩ (40 mA per segment) to 47 kΩ (10 mA per segment), and respect the 6 V absolute-maximum V+ rating. The narrow PDIP-24 footprint is identical to the MAX7221CNG and MAX7219CNG+ RoHS-compliant variant, so PCBs can be designed once and populated with either part.

Typische Anwendungen

MAX7219CNG ist geeignet für 7 Anwendungs: 8-Digit 7-Segment Numeric Display, 8x8 LED Matrix Module (Dot-Matrix Display), Bar-Graph Display Driver, Industrial Panel Meter & Process Controller, Scoreboard & Sports Timing Display, Arduino / Maker Educational Project, Audio VU Meter / Spectrum Display.

📺

8-Digit 7-Segment Numeric Display

The MAX7219CNG is purpose-built for 8-digit 7-segment numeric readouts with 40 mA per segment constant-current drive, eliminating external current-limiting resistors and saving 16+ discrete components on a typical 8-digit board. Its on-chip BCD Code-B decoder handles 0-9, hex A-F, and the hyphen/blank characters with no firmware overhead, while the serial SPI/QSPI/Microwire interface frees the host MCU for higher-level tasks. The 24-pin PDIP narrow body simplifies hand-soldered prototyping, and the 0-70 °C operating range covers commercial panel meters, digital clocks, and appliance front-panel displays.

📺

8x8 LED Matrix Module (Dot-Matrix Display)

The MAX7219CNG drives a standard 64-LED 8x8 common-cathode matrix directly, with each MAX7219 controlling one matrix module via the segment (rows) and digit (columns) outputs. Cascading multiple MAX7219CNGs via the DOUT-to-DIN chain allows arbitrarily long/wide scrolling displays with only three host pins. The integrated 8x8 static RAM stores the frame buffer without continuous MCU updates, and the 800 Hz per-digit refresh rate eliminates flicker when brightness PWM is set above 4/16. This is the canonical application in Arduino-based scrolling text, scoreboards, and IoT dashboards.

📊

Bar-Graph Display Driver

The MAX7219CNG drives up to 64 individual LEDs in a bar-graph or LED-cluster arrangement (e.g., VU meters, level indicators, battery-state bars). Each of the 64 LEDs is individually addressable through the same 8x8 RAM that drives 7-segment displays, so the host MCU simply writes bitmap frames without BCD decoding. Constant-current segment drive ensures uniform LED brightness across the entire bar, eliminating the brightness gradient that plagues discrete resistor-based designs. The shutdown mode (150 µA, data retained) supports battery-powered portable instruments.

🏭

Industrial Panel Meter & Process Controller

The MAX7219CNG interfaces directly to 4-20 mA / 0-10 V process signal conditioning front-ends and displays the resulting measurement on a bright 8-digit readout visible from across a factory floor. Its 40 mA per-segment drive capability supports high-efficiency LEDs readable in direct sunlight, and the on-chip multiplex scan frees the host MCU to perform ADC sampling, PID control, and Modbus communication. The MAX7219CNG is fully specified 0-70 °C and tolerates the typical industrial EMI environment when the 0.1 µF V+ bypass capacitor is placed close to the IC. It is also used as a discrete I/O expander via the segment/digit drivers when the 64 LEDs are replaced by optocouplers or relays.

🏆

Scoreboard & Sports Timing Display

The MAX7219CNG drives the large 7-segment digits used in gymnasium scoreboards, swimming lap counters, and stadium timing displays where each score digit module is a separate MAX7219 + digit cluster cascaded via DOUT. Constant-current segment drive is critical here because scoreboard LEDs are usually high-current (>20 mA) and brightness must be uniform across hundreds of segments. The 16-step digital brightness control allows the operator to dim the display for indoor use or boost it for outdoor sunlight. Only three host pins (DIN, CLK, LOAD) plus GND and V+ are required per module, simplifying the wiring harness.

🧩

Arduino / Maker Educational Project

The MAX7219CNG is the de-facto standard LED driver for Arduino-based hobbyist and educational projects, with mature open-source libraries (LedControl, MD_MAX72XX, MD_Parola) that abstract the register-level interface into simple setDigit/print/scroll calls. Most Arduino starter kits ship with an 8x8 MAX7219 matrix module or 8-digit 7-segment module, and the chip requires only three GPIO pins (D11/MOSI, D13/SCK, plus any digital pin for LOAD/CS). The 5 V tolerance matches the Arduino Uno/Mega/Nano logic levels directly, and the 24-pin PDIP narrow body fits standard 0.300 in DIP sockets for easy breadboarding.

🎧

Audio VU Meter / Spectrum Display

The MAX7219CNG can drive 32 or 64 LEDs arranged in a logarithmic VU meter or spectrum-analyzer bar pattern, with each LED driven by a segment or digit output of the same chip. The internal 8x8 RAM lets the host MCU push an audio-frame buffer and have it displayed without per-LED refresh work, leaving MIPS free for FFT computation. Constant-current drive ensures that audio peaks do not dim the bar visibly during transients, and the 16-step brightness control adjusts for ambient lighting without rewriting the display data. Cascading two MAX7219CNGs via DOUT supports 64 LEDs (8x8) for full stereo VU or 16-band spectrum.

Designhinweise

Place a 0.1 µF ceramic bypass capacitor within 5 mm of the V+ pin (pin 18) and a 10 µF tantalum bulk capacitor on the supply rail. The MAX7219CNG sources up to 40 mA on each of 8 segments (320 mA total worst case at full brightness all-on), so the V+ trace must be wide enough to avoid voltage droop during digit-multiplexing transitions. Operation above 5.5 V will damage the segment drivers and is not protected by internal clamps.

Both GND pins (4 and 9) MUST be connected to the ground plane for thermal dissipation and noise immunity; floating either GND pin causes logic errors and segment ghosting. For 8-digit designs, route the 8 segment traces (A-G + DP) as a bus to each digit cluster, and keep the ISET resistor within 5 mm of pin 17 with a guard trace to ground to prevent coupling of segment-switching noise into the current reference.

Do not exceed the ISET resistor minimum of 9.53 kΩ; values below this saturate the segment drivers and can damage the output stages. Do not assume the MAX7219CNG and MAX7221CNG are timing-compatible at all SPI clock rates - the MAX7221 has stricter tCSS and tCSH timing margins. Estimated: at 5 V V+ and R_SET = 9.53 kΩ, segment current ISET ≈ 40 mA; at R_SET = 47 kΩ, ISET ≈ 10 mA, linearly interpolated between.
