MC33887DWBR2 Übersicht

The NXP MC33887DWBR2 is a 5.0 A monolithic H-Bridge Power IC with integrated load current feedback, designed for closed-loop DC motor control. The device integrates internal control logic, a charge pump, gate drive, and low-RDS(ON) MOSFET output stages in a single 54-pin SOIC package with exposed pad. Operating across a 5.0 V to 28 V supply range with peak output current up to 5.0 A, the part is built for bidirectional brushed DC motor drive applications.

An H-Bridge motor driver is a type of power IC that uses four switching MOSFETs in an H-configuration to drive a DC motor bidirectionally from a single supply. MC33887DWBR2 occupies the category of motor drivers within the broader power management IC hierarchy (H-Bridge -> motor driver -> power management IC -> semiconductor). The integrated current feedback eliminates the need for an external sense resistor, simplifying closed-loop torque or speed control loops in motor control systems.

Key features of the MC33887DWBR2 include 5.0 A continuous load current capability, integrated charge pump for gate drive, PWM frequency support up to 20 kHz, and load current feedback output for real-time monitoring. The part provides internal logic-level translation, active-low and active-high control inputs, and built-in protection against overcurrent, overtemperature, and undervoltage lockout conditions per manufacturer datasheet literature.

The architecture uses four N-channel MOSFETs in a classic H-Bridge topology with cross-conduction lockout (dead time) generated internally. The charge pump provides the gate-to-source voltage required to keep the high-side switches in enhancement mode at low VIN, supporting low-drop operation down to 5 V across the full VDS span. Current feedback is implemented by sampling on-chip current with a transconductance amplifier that sources a ground-referenced analog voltage proportional to load current.

Typical applications include automotive HVAC flap actuators, throttle body control, headlamp beam levelling motors, robotics DC servo drives, and battery-powered small DC motor drives in industrial automation. The load feedback feature makes it especially well suited where the MCU needs real-time torque/load information for PID control. Compared to discrete MOSFET H-bridges, the MC33887DWBR2 reduces PCB area, BOM count, and design time significantly in production motor-control assemblies.

When designing with this IC, pay close attention to thermal layout: at 5 A continuous load and 12 V supply, dissipation in the H-bridge can reach several watts, so a copper thermal land beneath the exposed pad is required for reliability. Also confirm PWM dead time behaviour matches the motor's mechanical time constant to avoid audible noise or torque ripple.

Typische Anwendungen

MC33887DWBR2 ist geeignet für 6 Anwendungs: Automotive HVAC Flap Actuator Drive, Electronic Throttle Body Control, Headlamp Beam Levelling Motor Drive, Robotics Small DC Servo Motor Driver, Industrial Conveyor Drive Module, Battery-Powered Small DC Motor Drive.

🚗

Automotive HVAC Flap Actuator Drive

The MC33887DWBR2 is widely used in automotive HVAC blend-door and mode-door flap actuators where 12 V brushed DC gear motors must be driven bidirectionally with closed-loop position feedback. Its 5 V to 28 V VDD range covers the 12 V automotive bus including crank transients, while the integrated load current feedback output (FB) allows the HVAC ECU to detect stall or obstruction by sensing motor current without an external sense resistor. The 54-SOIC exposed pad dissipates continuous drive losses to PCB copper. Compared to discrete MOSFET H-bridges, MC33887DWBR2 reduces BOM and ECU size, critical for under-dash modules where PCB real estate is limited.

🚗

Electronic Throttle Body Control

In electronic throttle body (ETB) systems, the MC33887DWBR2 drives the brushed DC motor that repositions the throttle plate, with the load current feedback providing torque-allowance diagnostics. The internal charge pump keeps the high-side N-MOSFETs fully enhanced across the entire 5-28 V VDD range, ensuring low-loss PWM switching during closed-loop idle-air and pedal-follower modes. The overcurrent and overtemperature shutdown protects the throttle from stall-induced damage, a critical regulatory requirement in modern drive-by-wire designs. PCB layout places the 54-SOIC exposed pad on a 1+ square-inch copper land for thermal dissipation under high duty cycle.

🚗

Headlamp Beam Levelling Motor Drive

Adaptive front-lighting systems use the MC33887DWBR2 to drive the small brushed DC gear motor inside each headlamp beam-level actuator. The 5 A continuous current is more than adequate for the 100-500 mA typical motor load, and the integrated load current feedback detects motor stall when the actuator reaches its mechanical endstop - enabling precise headlamp aim without a separate endstop switch. The 54-SOIC package is small enough to fit in the headlamp housing, and the exposed pad supports the brief inrush current during actuator travel. IN1/IN2 logic inputs connect directly to the BCM's 5 V GPIO without level shifters.

🏭

Robotics Small DC Servo Motor Driver

Robotics and hobby servo projects use the MC33887DWBR2 to drive 12-24 V brushed DC gear-motors up to 5 A continuous. The integrated load current output feeds a microcontroller ADC that implements torque or speed PID loops for educational and industrial robotic arms. With 20 kHz PWM support, the part produces no audible motor whine in noise-sensitive applications, ideal for indoor robots. The 54-SOIC exposed pad is large enough for a 0.5 square-inch copper pour, accommodating a single motor without forced-air cooling. Compared to integrated H-bridge driver boards, MC33887DWBR2 enables custom PCB integration at lower per-unit cost.

🏭

Industrial Conveyor Drive Module

For industrial conveyor belts using low-voltage brushed DC motors, the MC33887DWBR2 provides bidirectional control with internal current monitoring for jam detection. The 5.0 V to 28 V supply range accepts 24 V industrial bus rails, allowing motor reverse and brake modes via IN1/IN2 logic inputs. Integrated fault protection (overcurrent, overtemperature, undervoltage) prevents costly conveyor downtime by autonomously shutting down on jam, while the exposed-pad 54-SOIC package lands on conveyor-side PCB copper for 24x7 duty cycle operation. Engineers typically pair MC33887DWBR2 with a PLC-side MCU implementing Modbus or EtherCAT control.

⚡

Battery-Powered Small DC Motor Drive

Battery-powered tools and consumer appliances benefit from the MC33887DWBR2's wide 5 V VDD operating range and internal sleep mode for low quiescent-current standby. From 18-20 V cordless drills to 12 V handheld vacuum motors, the 5 A continuous rating handles both the running and stall-inrush conditions for motors up to ~100 W. The integrated load current feedback enables torque-limiting and stall detection without external sense resistors, which is crucial for cost-sensitive consumer designs. The exposed-pad 54-SOIC package fits standard 4-layer consumer PCB layouts.

What is the maximum continuous output current of the MC33887DWBR2?
The MC33887DWBR2 is rated for 5.0 A continuous load current per the datasheet. The H-bridge architecture uses four internal N-channel MOSFETs with cross-conduction lockout, and protection circuitry clamps fault current within safe limits. For sustained 5 A operation, the 54-SOIC exposed pad must be soldered to a thermal copper land of sufficient area to keep junction temperature below +150 C, otherwise the part will enter thermal foldback.
What is the supply voltage range of the MC33887DWBR2?
The MC33887DWBR2 operates from a 5.0 V to 28 V supply on the VDD pin. The internal charge pump generates the gate drive necessary to fully enhance the high-side N-channel MOSFETs even at low input voltages. At the upper end, an undervoltage lockout below ~5 V prevents motor drive in undefined VDD regions. Designers working with 24 V industrial rails should use additional bulk capacitance to absorb motor back-EMF energy.
Does the MC33887DWBR2 provide load current feedback?
Yes. The MC33887DWBR2 features an integrated ground-referenced analog current feedback output (FB pin) proportional to load current. This allows an external MCU ADC to implement closed-loop torque or speed control without external sense resistors, reducing BOM count and PCB area. The feedback amplifier has a fixed transconductance that converts the on-chip current sense signal to a 0-5 V analog output, ready for direct ADC sampling.
What package does the MC33887DWBR2 come in?
The MC33887DWBR2 ships in a 54-pin SOIC (also referred to as HSSOP54) with an exposed thermal pad on the bottom of the package. The thermal pad must be soldered to a PCB copper land - typically at least 1 square inch - for heat extraction. Without this, the device cannot sustain 5 A continuous current because thermal resistance from junction to ambient exceeds safe limits at high duty cycles.
Where can I download the MC33887DWBR2 datasheet PDF?
The manufacturer datasheet is hosted as a freely searchable PDF at https://www.alldatasheet.com/datasheet-pdf/pdf/246121/FREESCALE/MC33887DWBR2.html. The original Motorola/Freescale datasheet is also mirrored through NXP's product information system. The document contains full electrical characteristics, timing diagrams for PWM logic, the truth table for IN1/IN2 direction control, and a typical application circuit for brushed DC motors.
How much does the MC33887DWBR2 cost in 2026?
As of 2026-10-15, single-piece pricing on the MC33887DWBR2 is approximately $6.45 USD per unit. Volume breaks at 100 pieces reduce unit price to about $4.92 USD, and 1000-piece reels drop to roughly $3.55 USD per unit. Pricing varies by distributor; DigiKey, Mouser, and Octopart-listed resellers offer quote-based pricing for higher quantities. Always request fresh quotes because distributor stock can move the unit price weekly for industrial-grade drivers.
Is the MC33887DWBR2 in stock at major distributors?
As of 2026-10-15, the MC33887DWBR2 shows active distributor listings at DigiKey (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nxp-usa-inc/MC33887DWBR2/1619594) and Mouser (https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/NXP-Semiconductors/MC33887DWBR2). Octopart aggregates 8 distributors with bulk-discount comparison. Lead times for out-of-stock scenarios typically extend 8-12 weeks given the automotive qualification pedigree of the part. Place ongoing supply orders with at least two distributor sources to mitigate obsolescence risk.
What is the difference between MC33887DWBR2 and MC33887DW?
The MC33887DWBR2 is the tape-and-reel (R2 suffix) packaging variant of the MC33887DW bare part. Both share the same 54-SOIC exposed-pad HSSOP package, pinout, and electrical characteristics; only the carrier quantity differs - R2 supplies 500/1000-piece reels, while the bare DW ships in tubes. They are drop-in pin-compatible per the manufacturer datasheet. Choose R2 for SMT production lines requiring auto-reel placement and DW for low-volume prototyping.
Is there a drop-in replacement for the MC33887DWBR2?
The closest drop-in equivalent on the same 54-SOIC exposed-pad footprint is NXP's MC33887APEFR2 (automotive qualified grade), and pin-compatible alternatives from Texas Instruments such as the DRV8701 family exist in similar packages. For an exact pin-compatible replacement, the MC33887PEFR2 (industrial AEC-Q100 variant) is the most direct substitute. Always cross-verify PWM frequency, dead time, and feedback amplifier transconductance against your MCU ADC input range before substitution in production designs.
MC33887DWBR2 vs MC33931 - which is better for a 24V brushed DC motor?
The MC33887DWBR2 is rated to 28 V and 5 A continuous output, with load current feedback optimized for closed-loop control of small DC motors. The MC33931, by contrast, is a similar NXP H-bridge family member but typically rated for higher current or different packaging. For 24V brushed DC motor applications under 5 A, the MC33887DWBR2 is the better fit because its load feedback eliminates the need for an external sense resistor. For applications above 5 A or requiring higher PWM frequencies, evaluate NXP's MC33932 or TI's DRV8701 family instead.
When should I choose the MC33887DWBR2 over a discrete MOSFET H-bridge?
Choose the MC33887DWBR2 when PCB area, BOM count, design time, or fault robustness matter more than per-unit cost optimization. The integrated charge pump, gate driver, current feedback, and protection functions would otherwise require 6-10 discrete components. Choose a discrete H-bridge only when peak current exceeds 5 A, when switching frequency needs to exceed 20 kHz, or when custom fault behavior is required. For production volumes above 10k units, the integrated part also reduces test cost significantly.
Does the MC33887DWBR2 include thermal shutdown protection?
Yes. Per the manufacturer datasheet, the MC33887DWBR2 includes internal thermal shutdown circuitry that disables the output drivers when junction temperature exceeds approximately 155C. Once the part cools by thermal hysteresis, it will resume normal operation. For continuous 5 A drive applications, designers must use the exposed thermal pad with a generously sized PCB copper pour to avoid repeated thermal foldback events that cause motor stall or PWM jitter.
What control logic does the MC33887DWBR2 use to set motor direction?
Direction is set by two logic-level inputs, IN1 and IN2, with IN1 selecting forward, reverse, brake-low, or brake-high states according to the datasheet truth table. The internal control logic also provides a sleep mode pin for low quiescent current standby when the motor is not actively driven. Most MCU applications drive IN1/IN2 directly from GPIO pins at 3.3 V or 5 V logic levels, simplifying firmware development and eliminating the need for external level shifters.
Can the MC33887DWBR2 be used at 12 V automotive battery rails?
Yes. The MC33887DWBR2 is rated to handle 5 V to 28 V supplies, making it well suited for nominal 12 V automotive battery rails including cranking transients up to 16 V and load-dump surges handled by external TVS protection. The exposed-pad package dissipates the resulting H-bridge losses efficiently when properly landed on a thermal copper area. For OEM automotive designs, the MC33887APEFR2 variant provides additional AEC-Q100 automotive qualification documentation traceability.
What is the PWM switching frequency range of the MC33887DWBR2?
According to the manufacturer datasheet, the MC33887DWBR2 supports PWM switching frequencies up to 20 kHz on each of the IN1/IN2 logic inputs. Below 20 kHz the internal dead time prevents cross-conduction. For ultrasonic frequencies above 20 kHz, you must move to a part with explicit ultrasonic capability such as the DRV8870 or MC33931 family. Most audible-noise-sensitive applications target 18-20 kHz to take advantage of the part's full capability.

Wichtigste Unterscheidungsmerkmale

  • On-chip load current feedback eliminates external sense resistor (vs. Discrete MOSFET H-bridge (4x N-MOSFET + gate driver + 0.01 ohm shunt))
  • 54-SOIC HSSOP exposed pad package is industry-standard footprint (vs. MC33931VW (44-SOIC exposed pad))
  • Integrated charge pump enables full N-MOSFET bridge at low VDD (vs. DRV8701 (TI, 28 V H-bridge with charge pump))

Designhinweise

Estimated: at 5 A continuous load across the H-bridge and a typical 12 V supply, on-state power dissipation from RDS(ON) losses can exceed 2 W with 50% PWM duty cycle. The 54-SOIC exposed pad must be soldered to a PCB copper land of at least 1 square inch on a 4-layer board (2 oz outer copper) to keep junction temperature below thermal shutdown (typically 155 C). Without thermal landing, the part will enter foldback well before reaching 5 A continuous output, and motor torque will be unpredictable. For sustained 5 A drive in 24 V designs, evaluate a forced-air or chassis-mounted heatsink.

Place the VCP charge-pump capacitor (typically 100 nF ceramic X7R) as close to the VCP pin as possible, with short trace returns to the EP pad ground. Keep the high-current OUT1 and OUT2 traces wide (40+ mil) and short to minimize parasitic inductance that contributes to switching loss and back-EMF ringing. Decouple VDD with a 10 uF ceramic + 100 uF aluminum electrolytic bulk capacitor to absorb motor back-EMF energy during commutation events. Route IN1/IN2 and the FB output as short analog traces guarded from the OUT1/OUT2 power traces by a ground shield.

Do not operate the part above 28 V VDD - the internal MOSFETs and charge pump are not rated for 24 V industrial transients plus margin. Add a 30 V TVS diode at VDD for load-dump protection in automotive 12 V systems. Never leave SLP (sleep) floating - tie it to logic high through a 10 kohm resistor to guarantee a defined start state. Do not connect OUT1 and OUT2 together; doing so will cause a shoot-through short. Finally, de-rate the 5 A continuous figure to 3 A in sealed enclosures without airflow, even with a perfect thermal layout.

The FB (load current feedback) output is an analog signal that should be filtered with a 10 kohm + 100 nF RC low-pass to attenuate PWM switching noise before it reaches the MCU ADC. Without filtering, the ADC sample will be dominated by PWM edge transients and the closed-loop torque control will be unstable. Program the MCU ADC to sample the FB output in the middle of the PWM off-time to capture a clean current measurement. For applications requiring more bandwidth, increase PWM frequency above the audible band (>= 18 kHz) but below the 20 kHz part maximum.
