PIC16C65A-04I/P Übersicht

The Microchip PIC16C65A-04I/P is an 8-bit CMOS OTP microcontroller based on the PIC16C family RISC architecture, featuring 7KB (4K x 14) one-time-programmable EPROM program memory, 192 bytes of RAM, and 33 digital I/O pins, housed in a 40-pin PDIP (DIP-40) through-hole package. The -04 speed grade denotes a 4 MHz maximum oscillator input, and the -I suffix denotes the industrial temperature range of -40C to +85C.

An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a programmable digital logic device that combines a CPU, non-volatile program memory, working RAM, and configurable peripheral blocks (I/O, timers, communication interfaces) on a single silicon die. PIC microcontrollers follow the RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computer) philosophy and use a Harvard architecture with separate program and data buses, delivering deterministic instruction execution in as little as 200 ns. The PIC16C family sits within the broader hierarchy: MCU -> 8-bit MCU -> PIC16C family -> PIC16C6x sub-family -> PIC16C65A device. EPROM-based members are one-time-programmable and intended for low-volume production or legacy socket replacement.

Key features include 33 I/O pins arranged across multiple ports (PORTA, PORTB, PORTC, PORTD, PORTE), three timers (TMR0, TMR1, TMR2), a 5-channel 8-bit Analog-to-Digital Converter, and serial communication peripherals including SSP for I2C/SPI and a USART for UART. Additional features include an 8-bit parallel slave port, watchdog timer with on-chip RC oscillator, power-on reset, brown-out reset, and power-saving SLEEP mode. The device operates from 2.5V to 6.0V.

The PIC16C65A uses a 14-bit instruction word with 35 single-word instructions, allowing compact code density. The Harvard bus structure enables simultaneous instruction fetch and data access, contributing to the one-instruction-per-cycle (except branches) throughput. External interrupt, RB port-change interrupt, and multiple peripheral interrupt sources support real-time event handling in embedded systems.

Typical applications include industrial control systems, automotive body and chassis electronics, white goods and appliance controllers, security and access control panels, sensor signal conditioning front-ends, and legacy embedded system maintenance. The DIP-40 package supports breadboard and socketed designs favored in education, prototyping, and field-replaceable assemblies.

When designing with this device, note that EPROM windows are not present on plastic PDIP packages; code must be committed via device programmer at production. Use ICD or compatible in-circuit debugger header for development. Ensure the Vdd/Vss decoupling follows the manufacturer recommended layout (100 nF ceramic within 5 mm of each supply pin) to maintain ADC accuracy.

Auswahlhilfe

Choose PIC16C65A-04I/P when maintaining a legacy industrial 40-pin PDIP PIC16C design that requires identical silicon and the -40C to +85C industrial temperature window. For new designs, select PIC16F877A-I/P instead - it occupies the same PDIP-40 footprint, offers 14 KB in-system flash (replacing 7 KB OTP EPROM), and upgrades the ADC from 5x8-bit to 8x10-bit. Choose PIC16C65A-04/P if your design runs only in the commercial 0C to +70C range and cost matters more than temperature margin. For designs that need more RAM and an extra CCP module, PIC16F877A-I/P is the clear upgrade. PIC16C64A-04I/P is a usable substitute if you do not need the parallel slave port. All five alternatives share the 40-pin PDIP footprint, simplifying PCB reuse.

Wichtigste Unterscheidungsmerkmale

  • Industrial -40C to +85C temperature rating (vs. PIC16C65A-04/P)
  • Parallel slave port for external bus interface (vs. PIC16C64A-04I/P)
  • Five-channel 8-bit ADC plus USART and SSP (vs. PIC16C63A-04I/SP)

Designhinweise

Place a 100 nF ceramic decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of each Vdd/Vss pin pair (pins 11/12 and 31/32). The PIC16C65A-04I/P draws approximately 15 uA typical at 5V/4 MHz and 1 uA typical at 3V/32 kHz, but transient current during ADC conversion can exceed 5 mA. Bulk decoupling (10 uF tantalum) is recommended when the supply source impedance is high. The MCLR pin requires a 10-50 kohm pull-up to Vdd for reliable reset; a diode to Vdd is suggested when using RC MCLR circuits to prevent negative transients.

OTP EPROM cannot be erased or reprogrammed; verify firmware in a windowed CERDIP sample before committing production volume. Configuration bits (oscillator, watchdog, code protect, brown-out) are programmed with the code and cannot be selectively erased. Brown-out reset should always be enabled for industrial applications to prevent code corruption during supply dips. The -04 speed grade means oscillator frequency must not exceed 4 MHz; do not substitute -20 silicon without also updating the oscillator and ADC clock divisor.

Route the analog AVdd/AVss (shared with digital Vdd/Vss on the PIC16C65A-04I/P) to a star ground topology to minimize ADC noise coupling. Keep analog input traces short and away from the OSC2 clock output. The parallel slave port pins (RD0-RD7, RE0-RE2) should be length-matched if used as an external bus at speeds above 1 MHz. The PORTB interrupt-on-change feature requires no external components but the corresponding TRISB bits must be configured as inputs and the IOC register enabled in software.
