PIC16C65A-04I/P Présentation
An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a programmable digital logic device that combines a CPU, non-volatile program memory, working RAM, and configurable peripheral blocks (I/O, timers, communication interfaces) on a single silicon die. PIC microcontrollers follow the RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computer) philosophy and use a Harvard architecture with separate program and data buses, delivering deterministic instruction execution in as little as 200 ns. The PIC16C family sits within the broader hierarchy: MCU -> 8-bit MCU -> PIC16C family -> PIC16C6x sub-family -> PIC16C65A device. EPROM-based members are one-time-programmable and intended for low-volume production or legacy socket replacement.
Key features include 33 I/O pins arranged across multiple ports (PORTA, PORTB, PORTC, PORTD, PORTE), three timers (TMR0, TMR1, TMR2), a 5-channel 8-bit Analog-to-Digital Converter, and serial communication peripherals including SSP for I2C/SPI and a USART for UART. Additional features include an 8-bit parallel slave port, watchdog timer with on-chip RC oscillator, power-on reset, brown-out reset, and power-saving SLEEP mode. The device operates from 2.5V to 6.0V.
The PIC16C65A uses a 14-bit instruction word with 35 single-word instructions, allowing compact code density. The Harvard bus structure enables simultaneous instruction fetch and data access, contributing to the one-instruction-per-cycle (except branches) throughput. External interrupt, RB port-change interrupt, and multiple peripheral interrupt sources support real-time event handling in embedded systems.
Typical applications include industrial control systems, automotive body and chassis electronics, white goods and appliance controllers, security and access control panels, sensor signal conditioning front-ends, and legacy embedded system maintenance. The DIP-40 package supports breadboard and socketed designs favored in education, prototyping, and field-replaceable assemblies.
When designing with this device, note that EPROM windows are not present on plastic PDIP packages; code must be committed via device programmer at production. Use ICD or compatible in-circuit debugger header for development. Ensure the Vdd/Vss decoupling follows the manufacturer recommended layout (100 nF ceramic within 5 mm of each supply pin) to maintain ADC accuracy.

Applications typiques
PIC16C65A-04I/P convient pour 6 applications: Industrial Process Control, Automotive Body Electronics, Appliance Control Systems, Security and Access Control Panels, Legacy Embedded System Maintenance, Sensor Signal Conditioning.
Industrial Process Control
The PIC16C65A-04I/P suits industrial process control with 33 digital I/O, 5-channel 8-bit ADC, and USART connectivity. Its -40C to +85C industrial temperature rating and 2.5-6.0V supply tolerance handle factory-floor transients. The device drives relays, sensors, and indicator panels while the SSP enables I2C sensor networking.
Recommandé
Automotive Body Electronics
Automotive body modules (lighting controllers, seat controls, HVAC flaps) leverage the PIC16C65A-04I/P's wide 2.5-6.0V supply tolerance and -40C to +85C rating for 12V vehicle bus environments. The 33 I/O drive LED drivers and relay coils directly; the parallel slave port interfaces with dashboard controller ASICs for command handoff.
Recommandé
Appliance Control Systems
White-goods appliances (washing machines, dishwashers, microwave ovens) deploy the PIC16C65A-04I/P for motor control and user-interface scanning. The 5-channel ADC reads thermistor or water-level sensors; the 8-bit parallel slave port drives 7-segment displays. The DIP-40 package supports socketed field service replacement.
Recommandé
Security and Access Control Panels
Alarm panels, card readers, and access-control keypads use the PIC16C65A-04I/P for keypad scanning via the PORTB interrupt-on-change, sensor loop monitoring via ADC, and Wiegand/keypad UART communication through the USART. The DIP-40 footprint accommodates hand-soldered prototypes and contract-manufacturer through-hole assemblies.
Recommandé
Legacy Embedded System Maintenance
Field maintenance of installed-base PIC16C65A-04I/P designs requires direct replacement availability. The OTP EPROM is non-erasable, so spare PICs are programmed identically and swapped on failure. With NRND lifecycle status, sourcing channels have moved to specialty distributors and authorized Microchip franchised partners for end-of-life product support.
Recommandé
Sensor Signal Conditioning
Sensor front-end boards use the PIC16C65A-04I/P's 5x8-bit ADC and SSP/I2C to read multiple transducers and forward digitized data to a host. Industrial 4-20 mA loops, thermocouples via op-amp front-ends, and optical encoders via TMR0 capture are typical. The 33 I/O count accommodates matrix-scanned button panels plus actuator drivers.

Notes de conception
Place a 100 nF ceramic decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of each Vdd/Vss pin pair (pins 11/12 and 31/32). The PIC16C65A-04I/P draws approximately 15 uA typical at 5V/4 MHz and 1 uA typical at 3V/32 kHz, but transient current during ADC conversion can exceed 5 mA. Bulk decoupling (10 uF tantalum) is recommended when the supply source impedance is high. The MCLR pin requires a 10-50 kohm pull-up to Vdd for reliable reset; a diode to Vdd is suggested when using RC MCLR circuits to prevent negative transients.
OTP EPROM cannot be erased or reprogrammed; verify firmware in a windowed CERDIP sample before committing production volume. Configuration bits (oscillator, watchdog, code protect, brown-out) are programmed with the code and cannot be selectively erased. Brown-out reset should always be enabled for industrial applications to prevent code corruption during supply dips. The -04 speed grade means oscillator frequency must not exceed 4 MHz; do not substitute -20 silicon without also updating the oscillator and ADC clock divisor.
Route the analog AVdd/AVss (shared with digital Vdd/Vss on the PIC16C65A-04I/P) to a star ground topology to minimize ADC noise coupling. Keep analog input traces short and away from the OSC2 clock output. The parallel slave port pins (RD0-RD7, RE0-RE2) should be length-matched if used as an external bus at speeds above 1 MHz. The PORTB interrupt-on-change feature requires no external components but the corresponding TRISB bits must be configured as inputs and the IOC register enabled in software.
