PIC16F1784-I/P Übersicht

The Microchip Technology PIC16F1784-I/P is an 8-bit PIC XLP enhanced mid-range flash microcontroller with 7 KB of program memory (4K x 14 words), 512 bytes of RAM and a 32 MHz internal oscillator, housed in a 40-pin PDIP package. The device integrates a 12-bit ADC with 15 channels, four comparators, five timers, three Programmable Switch Mode Controller (PSMC) modules and a dedicated 16-bit PWM module, together with 256 bytes of data EEPROM and I2C/SPI serial interfaces.

An 8-bit microcontroller is a complete computing core built around an 8-bit data bus, usually integrating program flash, RAM, EEPROM and analog peripherals on one die. The PIC16F1784-I/P belongs to the PIC16 family, a hierarchy that runs from 8-bit RISC microcontrollers up to general-purpose embedded processors, and it sits at the enhanced mid-range node of that tree. The "XLP" designation identifies Microchip's low-power platform, where the design target is low active and sleep current rather than raw processing throughput.

Key features include a 32 MHz internal oscillator that removes the need for an external crystal in most designs, 200 ns instruction execution, 49 instructions and 16 levels of stack depth for a compact yet capable architecture. Analog capability is unusually strong for this class: a 12-bit ADC with 15 channels, four comparators with programmable references, and 16-bit PWM with dedicated output edges make the part suitable for direct closed-loop control of power converters and lighting.

Technically the device uses an enhanced mid-range PIC core with self-read/write flash, and its three PSMC modules provide digital or analog feedback control of PWM frequency, duty cycle and phase with 16 ns clock resolution, dead-band control and auto-shutdown. A 256-byte EEPROM gives non-volatile storage for calibration and configuration data without consuming flash program space.

Typical applications include industrial sensor and condition-monitoring nodes, LED lighting drivers, battery charging and DC-DC power conversion control, precision analog measurement systems, motor drive interfacing, and cost-sensitive consumer appliance controllers where analog integration reduces external component count.

One key design consideration is analog layout: keep the ADC, comparator and reference pins away from switching and high-current return paths, use a clean ground reference for AVDD, and decouple supply pins close to the package. The 40-pin PDIP also suits prototyping and breadboarding, where through-hole access and socketed debugging are preferred.

This page combines device specifications, a parameter-by-parameter comparison against close family members, drop-in replacement options, and practical design notes so that engineers can qualify the PIC16F1784-I/P for a new design before committing to a footprint.

Typische Anwendungen

PIC16F1784-I/P ist geeignet für 6 Anwendungs: Industrial Sensor and Condition-Monitoring Node, DC-DC Converter and Battery Charger Control, LED Lighting Driver and Dimming Controller, Precision Analog Measurement and Data Acquisition, Motor Drive Interface and Position Feedback, Cost-Sensitive Consumer and Appliance Controller.

🏭

Industrial Sensor and Condition-Monitoring Node

The PIC16F1784-I/P suits sensor nodes that must digitise several analogue channels locally and survive wide ambient swings. Its 12-bit ADC with 15 channels removes the need for an external converter in most signal-chain designs, while the four comparators provide fast threshold detection for limit alarms without CPU involvement. With 7 KB of flash, 512 bytes of RAM and 256 bytes of EEPROM, the device holds calibration coefficients and sensor offsets in non-volatile memory, and the 32 MHz internal oscillator eliminates the external crystal and its supply current. As an industrial-grade part rated from -40 C to +125 C, it supports both factory and outdoor monitoring installations without derating.

⚡

DC-DC Converter and Battery Charger Control

The three PSMC modules make the PIC16F1784-I/P unusually capable for switch-mode power work. Each block provides digital or analog feedback control of PWM frequency, pulse begin and end times, 16-bit period, duty cycle and phase resolution with 16 ns clock resolution, and supports single, complementary, push-pull and three-phase output modes with dead-band control and an 8-bit counter. Dead-band insertion and auto-shutdown with restart protect a synchronous stage during fault conditions, while the dedicated 16-bit PWM module handles timing-critical outputs. The combination lets a single low-cost controller replace a dedicated PWM IC plus supervisory device.

💡

LED Lighting Driver and Dimming Controller

For constant-current LED lighting, the PIC16F1784-I/P provides the timing and analog blocks needed to build a complete driver on one device. The 16-bit PWM module with programmable dead band drives the switching stage with resolution far beyond what human or camera flicker perception requires, while the 12-bit ADC and comparators can close the loop on a sense resistor or a light sensor. PWM-based dimming ratios are set by the timer block, and the PSMC channels can supervise additional channels or coordinate a boost stage. Because the same silicon handles dimming, fault monitoring and communication, lighting modules reduce their external component count noticeably.

📊

Precision Analog Measurement and Data Acquisition

The PIC16F1784-I/P targets compact instrumentation where a 12-bit converter is the right resolution-versus-cost compromise and board area is limited. Fifteen ADC channels plus four comparators mean multiple sensors can be scanned or watched simultaneously, and the comparators can drive an interrupt for fast threshold events without a polling loop. The 512 bytes of RAM is adequate for short acquisition buffers, and the EEPROM holds offset and gain calibration across the product lifetime. With the enhanced mid-range core executing in 200 ns per instruction, averaging and filtering routines complete well inside typical sample intervals.

⚙️

Motor Drive Interface and Position Feedback

The PIC16F1784-I/P is a sensible fit for supervisory control around a dedicated motor driver IC, handling direction, braking and fault handshaking while a three-phase capable PSMC can supervise an external inverter stage. Four comparators can watch hall sensors or an over-current signal for immediate shutdown, and the dedicated 16-bit PWM module generates the timing reference. Because the comparators operate without CPU intervention, over-current response is not degraded by a busy main loop. For stepper and BLDC positioning tasks, the 200 ns instruction cycle allows closed-loop step calculations and position bookkeeping in firmware.

🔧

Cost-Sensitive Consumer and Appliance Controller

In household appliances and small consumer products, the PIC16F1784-I/P consolidates functions that would otherwise need several discrete chips. The 12-bit ADC reads temperature, level or knob position, the comparators handle simple switch inputs, and the timers manage relays, buzzers and motor drive. Serial I2C and SPI connectivity allows a display, sensor or keypad to be attached without extra bus controllers, while the 256 bytes of EEPROM stores user settings and calibration. The XLP low-power heritage keeps standby current manageable in appliances that spend most of their life switched off.

PIC16F1784-I/P vs PIC16F1787-I/P - which is better for motor and power control?
Choose the PIC16F1784-I/P when your design relies on the PSMC-based control blocks and the dedicated 16-bit PWM with the 12-bit ADC and four comparators, because those resources are the core of the PIC16F1784 feature set. The PIC16F1787-I/P belongs to the same enhanced mid-range family in the same 40-pin PDIP footprint, so it is a like-for-like drop-in candidate with identical core, memory class and I2C/SPI connectivity. Confirm the exact peripheral set you need in the family data sheet before swapping, since comparator and PSMC counts differ between members.
What is the difference between PIC16F1784-I/P and PIC16F1784-E/P?
Both parts share the same PIC16F1784 die, the same 7 KB flash, 512 bytes of RAM, 256 bytes of EEPROM and the same 40-pin PDIP footprint, so they are pin-to-pin compatible. The difference is the temperature grade suffix: -I designates the industrial temperature option rated for -40 C to +125 C, while -E designates the extended commercial grade with a narrower upper temperature limit. Select -I/P for factory, automotive-adjacent or industrial equipment that must operate across wide ambient ranges, and -E/P only for room-temperature indoor products.
When should I choose PIC16F1784-I/P over PIC16F1786-I/P?
Select the PIC16F1784-I/P when your application needs the fuller analog and power-conversion feature set: the 12-bit ADC with 15 channels, four comparators, three PSMC modules and the dedicated 16-bit PWM module. The PIC16F1786-I/P sits in the same family and the same 40-pin PDIP footprint, which makes it a natural choice for designs that need only the core plus a smaller peripheral subset and want to reduce cost and board area. Because both are pin-to-pin compatible in the same package, you can prototype on one and migrate to the other if requirements grow.
Is PIC16F1784-I/P suitable for battery-powered sensor applications?
Yes, the PIC16F1784-I/P is a reasonable choice for battery-powered sensing because it belongs to the PIC XLP low-power family and combines a 32 MHz internal oscillator, which removes the external crystal and its associated load, with on-chip 12-bit ADC and comparator channels that let one device handle acquisition directly. The 512-byte RAM and 256-byte EEPROM are enough for short measurement buffers and stored calibration data. For duty-cycled designs, pick the internal oscillator and low-frequency timer settings carefully, and verify the sleep and run currents in the family data sheet for your duty cycle.
What is the best drop-in replacement for PIC16F1784-I/P?
The closest drop-in replacements are the other 40-pin PDIP members of the same enhanced mid-range family, namely the PIC16F1787-I/P and PIC16F1786-I/P, which keep the same core, memory class and pin arrangement while differing in peripheral mix. For a like-for-like substitution with identical electrical behaviour, the PIC16F1784-E/P matches the die and package and changes only the temperature grade. For any substitution, verify the ADC channel count, comparator count and PSMC availability in the family data sheet before committing, since those resources drive most designs built around this device.
What can replace PIC16F1784-I/P?
The practical replacements for the PIC16F1784-I/P are the 40-pin PDIP devices from the same enhanced mid-range family, most notably the PIC16F1787-I/P and PIC16F1786-I/P, both of which share the same package footprint and core architecture and can be fitted without board changes. A grade-for-grade swap to the PIC16F1784-E/P is also possible where the wider industrial temperature range is not required. When moving to a different family or a different manufacturer's device, treat it as a redesign: the register map, peripheral set and programming toolchain all change even if the footprint matches.
Is there a Microchip equivalent for PIC16F1784-I/P from another series?
Microchip's closest equivalents remain within the PIC16 enhanced mid-range family, where the PIC16F1787-I/P and PIC16F1786-I/P provide the same 40-pin PDIP footprint, the same 8-bit core and comparable flash and RAM resources. Moving to the PIC16F1788 and PIC16F1789 devices is also possible from a footprint perspective because they are offered in 40-pin packages, but the register set and peripheral mix differ enough that firmware will require modification. Use the manufacturer's cross-reference and product comparison tools to confirm peripheral compatibility before planning a migration.
What tooling is used to program and debug the PIC16F1784-I/P?
The PIC16F1784-I/P is supported by the Microchip MPLAB toolchain, and the manufacturer confirms that the MPLAB PICkit 5 in-circuit debugger and programmer supports all Microchip devices, which makes it the default production programming path for this MCU. Because the part carries self-read/write flash, firmware can also update its own program memory in the field, and the 40-pin PDIP package exposes MCLR and the programming pins for socketed or in-circuit programming. Choose the debugger variant that matches your production volume and whether you need the same connector on the board.
Does the PIC16F1784-I/P include EEPROM and how much?
Yes, the PIC16F1784-I/P includes 256 bytes of data EEPROM in addition to its 7 KB of flash program memory and 512 bytes of RAM. The EEPROM is separate from program space, so calibration constants, serial numbers and configuration records can be retained across power cycles and frequent write cycles without wearing out the flash. The family data sheet also documents self-read/write capability for flash, which gives you a second non-volatile store for larger tables if your application needs more than the EEPROM can hold.
Is the PIC16F1784-I/P still in production?
Yes, Microchip Technology lists the PIC16F1784 as In Production on the manufacturer product page, and the -I/P industrial 40-pin PDIP ordering code is the long-life catalogue configuration of the family. Active status means the family continues to receive datasheet and tooling support, and that drop-in siblings such as the PIC16F1787-I/P and PIC16F1786-I/P remain available for second sourcing. For new designs, keep the family's PDIP option in mind if through-hole assembly matters, and confirm availability and packaging at order time through the quote request form on this page.

Technische Referenzdaten für PIC16F1784-I/P – Vergleich, Designhinweise und Compliance-Informationen.

Auswahlhilfe

Choose the PIC16F1784-I/P when your design needs strong analog and power-conversion resources on a single 8-bit die: a 12-bit ADC with 15 channels, four comparators, three PSMC modules and a dedicated 16-bit PWM, combined with 7 KB of flash, 512 bytes of RAM and 256 bytes of EEPROM, in a through-hole 40-pin PDIP. Pick the PIC16F1784-E/P when the board lives in a temperature-controlled indoor enclosure and you want the identical silicon at a lower cost, accepting the reduced upper ambient limit. Choose the PIC16F1786-I/P when a smaller peripheral subset is enough and cost and simplicity drive the decision, since the pinout and package are unchanged. Use the PIC16F1787-I/P or the PIC16F1788/PIC16F1789 generation for second sourcing or a performance step-up, but budget for firmware rework when moving outside the same family member. For new compact boards, consider the 28-pin and 44-pin package options of the same family if through-hole assembly is not required.

Designhinweise

The 12-bit ADC and the four comparators share analog pins with the digital port functions, so treat the analog inputs as noise-sensitive nets. Route the analog traces away from the switching nodes of any external power stage, keep the analog ground reference tied to the quiet end of the board, and place the analog supply bypass capacitor directly at the AVDD pin rather than at the connector. On a through-hole 40-pin DIP layout this is easy to get wrong because analog and digital pins alternate around the perimeter of the package.

The 32 MHz internal oscillator avoids an external crystal, but it also means supply current depends on the oscillator configuration you select in firmware. For low-power designs, use the lower-frequency internal oscillator settings or an external low-power source during sleep, and confirm the run and sleep currents in the family data sheet against your duty cycle. Provide local decoupling at every supply pin, with the bulk capacitor placed near the power entry and a 100 nF ceramic at each pin, because the ADC reference and comparators react quickly to supply ripple.

Do not assume the pin functions of the 28-pin SOIC and 44-pin TQFP variants carry over to the 40-pin PDIP. The -I/P ordering code is the 40-pin through-hole industrial option, and the ADC, comparator and PSMC outputs occupy different pins than in the smaller packages. Programmable peripheral pin select on this family means a pin can move between digital and analog roles, so freeze the pin configuration early and re-check it after any firmware change that touches the PPS registers.

When using the PSMC blocks for DC-DC or LED driver work, enable the dead-band counter and the auto-shutdown with restart feature rather than relying on firmware polling, so that a fault is handled in hardware. The 16 ns clock resolution gives fine control of pulse edges, but the practical limit is usually the external gate driver and power stage rather than the timer itself. Validate the dead time against the MOSFET or driver propagation delay in the system, not only against the timing diagram.
