PIC16LF1782-E/ML Übersicht

The Microchip Technology PIC16LF1782-E/ML is an 8-bit RISC microcontroller based on the PIC16 CPU core, featuring 3.5KB (2K x 14 words) of Flash program memory, 256 bytes of data EEPROM, and 256 bytes of data RAM, all housed in a 28-pin QFN (ML) package with exposed thermal pad.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU core, non-volatile program memory, volatile data memory, and a rich set of peripheral blocks. The PIC16LF1782 sits within Microchip's PIC16 XLP (eXtreme Low Power) family, which targets battery-powered and energy-harvesting applications. In the broader system hierarchy it belongs to: microcontroller -> embedded processor -> semiconductor IC. Its XLP designation indicates nanoWatt technology with deep sleep currents in the nanoampere range, making it a strong candidate for always-on sensor nodes and IoT endpoints.

Key features include a 32 MHz maximum CPU clock, integrated 12-bit ADC with up to 11 channels, an 8-bit DAC, three operational amplifiers, two high-speed comparators, an 8-bit/16-bit timer pair, and multiple communication peripherals (EUSART, MSSP I2C/SPI). The wide 1.8V to 3.6V supply range enables direct connection to single-cell Li-ion or 2xAA battery chemistries without a boost converter. A built-in 32 kHz LFINTOSC and on-chip voltage reference further reduce external BOM cost.

Architecturally, the device uses a Harvard-style RISC core with a 14-bit instruction word and a single accumulator (WREG) plus a 16-deep hardware stack. The integrated op-amps, comparators, and 12-bit ADC allow direct interface to bridge sensors, photodiodes, and thermistors without external signal-conditioning ICs, shrinking the analog front-end footprint on space-constrained PCBs.

Typical applications include portable medical sensors, IoT edge nodes, battery-powered instrumentation, LED lighting controllers, and consumer appliances such as coffee machines and e-bike dashboards. The low-voltage operation and rich analog integration also suit smoke detectors and HVAC transmitters.

When designing with this part, pay close attention to the ICSP programming pin assignments (ICSPCLK/ICSPDAT share pins with RB6/RB7) and route the exposed pad to a continuous ground copper pour for thermal dissipation and electrical ground return. Operating voltage below 2.0 V caps the CPU clock at 16 MHz per the datasheet's frequency-voltage derating curve.

🧩

Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Node

The PIC16LF1782-E/ML fits battery-powered IoT sensor nodes because its XLP technology delivers nanoampere-level deep-sleep currents while the integrated 12-bit ADC and three on-chip op-amps interface directly to bridge-type sensors such as load cells and gas sensors. The 1.8 V minimum supply makes it compatible with single-cell Li-coin (CR2032) and 2xAA chemistries without a boost converter, and the MSSP peripheral drives I2C or SPI sensor buses. Per the manufacturer datasheet, the wake-up time from sleep is sub-microsecond, allowing aggressive duty-cycling that extends coin-cell life into the multi-year range typical of LoRaWAN or Zigbee end devices.

💊

Portable Medical Sensor

The PIC16LF1782-E/ML suits portable medical devices such as pulse oximeters, glucometers, and single-lead ECG patches where low power and analog integration are mandatory. Its three integrated op-amps condition the photodiode signal front-end directly, and the 12-bit ADC achieves sufficient resolution for SpO2 calculation while the 8-bit DAC drives LED bias current. Per Microchip application notes, the extended -40C to +125C temperature grade supports body-worn and skin-contact products. The 28-QFN package measures only 6x6 mm, fitting comfortably inside a fingertip pulse-ox housing while leaving room for the battery and BLE module.

💡

LED Lighting Controller

The PIC16LF1782-E/ML works well as an LED lighting controller in dimmable lamps and architectural fixtures because the 8-bit DAC and three op-amps drive constant-current sinks for RGB or tunable-white channels. Its EUSART supports DMX512 or DALI receive firmware stacks, while the MSSP SPI bus can drive external APA102 or WS2812 chains when timing tolerance permits. Per Microchip reference designs, the 1.8 V to 3.6 V range allows direct operation from a single-cell Li-ion battery in portable fixture designs, and the deep-sleep current is low enough to meet standby power budgets under EU 2019/2020 lighting regulations. The 32 MHz CPU executes PWM updates at audio-noise-free frequencies above 20 kHz.

🏭

Industrial Process Transmitter

The PIC16LF1782-E/ML fits 4-20 mA industrial process transmitters because the integrated 12-bit ADC, three op-amps, and on-chip voltage reference eliminate external signal-conditioning ICs that would otherwise drift over temperature. The 1.8 V to 3.6 V supply rails pair naturally with a low-dropout regulator fed from the loop's compliance voltage. Per Microchip application notes, the extended -40C to +125C temperature grade is sufficient for cabinet-mounted instrumentation, and the MSSP I2C bus connects to external EEPROM for calibration constants. The 28-QFN (6x6) footprint is small enough to fit inside a head-mount probe housing while the exposed pad provides the thermal dissipation required for continuous loop-power operation.

🔧

Home Appliance Control Board

The PIC16LF1782-E/ML serves home appliances such as coffee machines, e-bike dashboards, and HVAC thermostats where motor or relay control plus user-interface handling share one chip. Its 8-bit and 16-bit timers drive PWM outputs for brushed-DC motor speed control or TRIAC phase-angle dimming, and the comparator inputs monitor zero-cross detection for AC line synchronization. Per the manufacturer datasheet, the 32 MHz CPU executes user-interface debounce and display refresh routines in real time without DMA. The 28-QFN package fits behind a small OLED or segment LCD panel and the exposed pad simplifies thermal design in enclosed control boxes with limited airflow.

🚗

Automotive Auxiliary Sensor

The PIC16LF1782-E/ML handles automotive auxiliary sensor applications such as tire-pressure-monitor (TPM) sensors, occupancy detection, and seatbelt pretensioner test circuits. Its extended -40C to +125C temperature grade and the 12-bit ADC interface directly to MEMS pressure or acceleration sensors, while the integrated op-amps condition the analog front-end. Per Microchip qualification data, the LF1782 family is not formally AEC-Q100 qualified, so for safety-critical applications designers should select a Q-graded sibling. The 28-QFN (6x6) package is small enough to fit inside a TPM valve stem, and the XLP sleep current extends battery life to the typical 10-year service window expected of TPM sensors.

Designhinweise

The exposed thermal pad (pin 29 on the QFN) MUST be soldered to a continuous ground copper pour, ideally stitched with thermal vias to an internal ground plane. This pad provides both the chip's electrical ground return and its primary thermal dissipation path; omitting it or leaving it floating causes erratic ADC readings and may violate the maximum junction temperature budget. Recommended footprint is the standard JEDEC MO-220 land pattern with at least four 0.3 mm thermal vias connecting the pad to a 1 oz inner ground plane.

Place a 100 nF ceramic decoupling capacitor as close as physically possible to the VDD pin (pin 6), with a 10 uF bulk tantalum or ceramic capacitor on the same node. The PIC16LF1782's XLP peripheral logic draws fast transient currents during ADC sampling and PWM updates; without tight decoupling the internal voltage reference can droop, degrading ADC accuracy. Per the datasheet, VDD rise time must be monotonic and faster than 300 ms for proper Power-on Reset behavior - avoid soft-start ramps that exceed this window.

Route the ICSP clock (ICSPCLK/RB6, pin 14) and ICSP data (ICSPDAT/RB7, pin 15) as short, parallel traces to a 6-pin header or Tag-Connect pads. These pins double as GPIO and are shared with the MSSP peripheral, so any series resistor on RB6/RB7 used for in-circuit programming can distort I2C rise times. Keep the MCLR/VPP line (pin 24) short and place the 10 kohm pull-up within 5 mm of the pin to guarantee reliable in-circuit programming under noisy environmental conditions.

The 12-bit ADC achieves its rated accuracy only when the analog input traces are guarded by a ground pour and isolated from switching signals such as PWM outputs and the EUSART TX line. For source impedances above 5 kohm, add an external buffer op-amp because the internal ADC sample capacitor requires sub-microampere settling. Estimated: at 32 MHz CPU clock with 4 ADC TAD cycles, the acquisition window is approximately 4 us, which sets the practical input-impedance budget per the datasheet's ADC section.

Do not assume 32 MHz operation below 2.0 V VDD - the PIC16LF1782 datasheet's frequency-voltage derating curve limits the CPU to 16 MHz when VDD is in the 1.8 V to 2.0 V window. If your design runs from a fresh CR2032 coin cell at 3.0 V and drops below 2.0 V under load, configure OSCCON to switch to the internal 8 MHz or 4 MHz HFINTOSC automatically to avoid oscillator failure. Also, ensure the LFINTOSC is selected for the secondary oscillator timebase if your application depends on Timer1 in sleep mode.
